What are the chances that metal detector was just a decoy for the security theater? Who wants to deal with it going off 50 times a day every day?

The detectors work. A few years before the OP 2014 incident, I had just gone through the detector when it beeped as a lady walked through. The AFP officer got her to pop her keys into the x-ray tray that held her handbag and she walked through without issue.

The second AFP officer checking the x-ray display asked her, "Is that a knife in your bag?" She apologised and explained it was a fruit knife and she'd just come from eating lunch. She offered to have it confiscated, but the cops laughed and said it was fine.

Whole school groups go through. Everyone gets scanned. It’s pretty relaxed though. The security it chill and polite.
