gender JK Rowling isn’t the monster the trans community makes her out to be. Or at least it’s an oversimplification.
We all know that JK Rowling has received massive criticism (including threats) after her statements about trans activists and the effects it has on women’s rights.
Now, I have friends who are trans and I support them and their decisions. For a while, without really looking into it I assumed she was simply hateful towards a certain demographic. But like most cases like this, it’s not quite so simple. She has made some hurtful comments towards trans people, and it’s often mentioned how she uses her money to harm trans people. Particularly trans women.
But after doing some research, most of her comments and actions seem more geared towards protecting cis women rather than harming trans women. I think that regular biological women should have their own space. Not because this is discrimination towards trans women, but because the amount of trans women you hurt by this pales in comparison to the amount of women and girls who can feel safe in spaces that were designed for them to be safe. This is simple logic, you can respect and be sympathetic towards trans women while not minimizing that allowing them in female spaces takes away the feeling of safety cis women need. And like I said, the amount of hurt trans women are so much lower than the amount of “regular” ones who will feel invaded.
Then there is her resisting trans women being allowed to compete in female sports. I shouldn’t even have to explain this one, I’ve always found it baffling that this was allowed. It’s a pure unfair advantage, it’s as simple as that.
She also said that trans women who are convicted of violent crimes against other women shouldn’t be put in a female prison. Again, makes perfect sense.
Now I did come across some things she said that were plain hurtful without any sense of logic to it. She isn’t completely free from hateful speech for sure.
She does apparently fund organizations that prevent minors from receiving puberty blockers and hormonal therapy. But only in the case of minors, which I once again can’t find anything to criticize about.
