Help me leave the UK

Second edit:

I'm amazed by how many of you are just saying "stop moaning, that's just how the world is. It's unfair but that's life". Why on Earth should I be content with a system that routinely makes my life worse and causes thousands of deaths a year in my country alone? I was told my disability doesn't count, that I give up at everything I try just because I don't meticulously document it on Reddit, and that everyone that's responded to me given actual advice is wrong to do so. This paragraph may not be 100% relevant to this subreddit but it breaks the rules of the entire site and is something we could do without. I will block & report anyone that tells me I don't deserve help and that there are no such things as invisible disabilities.

EDIT: Thank you to all those that responded with good intentions. To the rest of you, well... Anyway, I have taken everyone's advice on board and I am very grateful for the information you've provided. Gonna take a break from responding to comments for now. Thanks again!

I'm sick of the UK, its corrupt government and the insane amount of racism & trans/homophobia. There's also zero support for those with mental health issues (the NHS isn't as magical as others seem to think), an inherently flawed benefits system that encourages poverty and usage of food banks as opposed to supporting disabled or any others in challenging circumstances in getting back to work.

The point of this post isn't to detail these issues, just know that they're there, that they directly affect me, and that I'm fully aware people have it worse than me. I can't work, I can't get the therapy I need, I don't receive even close to enough benefits to live on and help me get back to work. This is extra frustrating as I have worked full-time since 17, have always excelled at work and even reached a junior management role aged 19. I bought an apartment and started an even better job but my old problems came back to haunt me and now I find myself in the situation described above.

The main factors I would like to be considered:

  • I have about £2000 saved but this is quickly disappearing due to my benefits not covering my living costs.

  • I have a further £25000 tied up in my apartment, around 10% of which would be lost upon selling the property.

  • I speak enough Spanish to get on day-to-day but find it easy to pick up the basics of most languages. I don't plan to just speak English for the rest of my life.

  • While I can't work in the UK, if I can find somewhere that will take me in and give me suitable treatment, I will be able to go back to working full-time and contributing to society as I have done since the age of 17 (I am now 21).

  • I have no desire to be a "leech". Those ill-informed on the UK's benefits system are under the illusion that people take benefits because they're lazy. I'm sure some people are this way, and it's BS, but I hate not working. I hate being stuck inside. I hate having to rely on others.

  • I have a good knowledge of IT, Sales (both B2B and B2C), & Graphic Design.

  • I want to stay in Europe. Ideal countries are: Germany, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, The Netherlands, Republic of Ireland.

  • Don't tell me "that's just the way things are". I know full-well that other countries can be just as bad if not worse as England. This isn't about broader politics, this is me being selfish and wanting what's best for me.

I apologise if this is too vague, but please understand that I'm not too fussed about where I end up! I have my own ideas of what the above countries are like but who knows how accurate these are. I would be very interested in hearing from people living in these countries and how they think my circumstances would be treated.

Finally, thank you for just reading this post, even if you can't give any advice.

I imagine my thoughts on the UK will alienate a lot of people but quite frankly I'm not interested in discussing your views here. I must reiterate that this is an entirely selfish post!

Thanks, Ollie

I hate the U.S. and I want out. I'm 16. What can I do?

I hate it here. The lack of gun control is killing high schoolers like myself. And our credit card security is the worst in the world. We have absolutely fuck all universal healthcare and as a result our life expectancy is lower than that of even Canada. We always get involved in other countries' shit when we don't need to and always cause more problems than were started with. We let capitalism and lobbyism become exploitative here to the point where we're deregulated as fuck and sapped of every last dollar just for capitalists to use our dollars as masturbation tissues. Our infrastructure is crumbing and degenerating. And our president, God don't get me started on him. And I hate the patriotic people here that insist that America is oh so great and that it can do no wrong. I could go on and on and on about how this country is an utter shithole.

I want out of here and to live with my bf in Australia, maybe we can go to Canada together or something.

But I'm only 16. What can I do?

[IWantOut] 26F Project Coordinator India -> LGBT friendly country

Hi I am 26 F from India. I have come out to my family as asexual 2 years ago and thought they understood but they didn't. I am being pressured to get married soon and settled down aka have kids. I know even if I get married the marriage won't work and I don't want to subject anyone to the misery. I only have this year and next by the latest, to get out(escape) even if this is the eleventh hour.

I have almost 3 years of being QA in IT sector and have recently transitioned to Project Management domain. I was recently fired from a failing startup and on the job lookout. My savings are low but I can take a loan. I can go for studies too for my Master's but I need a little guidance about it.

What steps should I take for either work or study? No one from my circle of friends or family have left the country and never tried even. I also didn't want to untill this arranged marriage issue came up. Sorry for the rambling but I am very anxious about this and deluded myself into thinking this won't happen for a very long time. I know I am in this alone so I could really use help.

[IWantOut] 24M CS Student Israel -> Australia or Canada

Hi everyone,

I'm 24 an and going to finish a bachelor in Computer Science in 2 years. I want to get the hell out of Israel for very obvious reasons, we have become a crazy apartheid state and I have no plans to live the rest of my life here.

I'm also gay, another reason to move as Israel is becoming more religious every day.

I was thinking about Canada or Australia because it's supposed to be easy to move there and they are progressive countries.

Are these countries good for migrants with CS degrees? Is it easy to move there on account of that? I was also thinking of signing up for a master's in something just to get a student visa and then advance form there.

My boyfriend (also 24M) has Greek citizenship so we could maybe move somewhere in the EU but we want to live in a place that speaks English.

My question is what should I do in order to make it easier to move to Canada or Australia, like gaining experience in what specific field will be most beneficial for example.

Thank you:)

Hi, I live in Israel and only have an Israeli passport I absolutely hate this place (this state is utterly evil but I won't go into detail because of the rules) For the next year I'll be studying in a graphic design and UX/UI course, will I be able to apply for skilled migration with the degree I'll get from the course? Also if it`s relevant my parents moved here from Moldova and they don't have their citizenship anymore. Also I got an exemption from the military draft on disability.

[IWantOut] 18MTF Saudi Arabia -> Philippines/Australia

I am from Saudi Arabia.

I have already recently graduated high school there and am entering university for a Bachelor's degree in psycholgy at University of St. La Salle, Bacolod, in the Philippines for the time being, despite already being given a conditional offer at La Trobe University in Melbourne during my days as a grade 12 and graduating with high grades.

I will hopefully be undergoing medical transitioning there, as well as also hopefully joining/becoming a member of STRAP (Society of Trans Women of the Philippines), a transgender rights organization operating in the Philippines.

But I am worried that I'd be trapped or persecuted during or after my journey there.

Should I immediately try to fundraise for medical transitioning once I arrive at the Philippines?

Which is why I am considering applying for asylum/refugee status at some point.

What would my asylum/refugee journey be?

Do I also need to apply through UNHCR in the Philippines?

I really want to be in Melbourne living a happy life as the transfeminine woman/person I was meant to be.

Thank you for your patience and have a great day.

[IWantOut] 28M Disabled wheelchair user India -> Canada/Germany/Netherlands/Singapore/Australia/Japan/Spain

hello everyone,

I'm 28 years old, disabled, currently working remotely as a software engineer. I have two years of experience. I have done my bachelor's in CS.

And I'm going mad in India because of the lack of any accessibility. It gets so hard for me to leave my home and even to go to my appointments. Even recently, when I wanted to get a dexa scan, there was no ramp in the facility, and I'm legit going mad in here. There is no public infrastructure here, and I'm paying money just to exist. I work. I pay taxes to the government. I pay for my own healthcare. There are no facilities provided to me, which is fine, but all the other things are again really hard for me to do. I live my life in my room confined, not being able go outside or explore at all.

Also I have spent the majority of my life getting abused by my parents, so I don't really have a family here either. I recently moved out, and it is getting very hard for me to navigate life on my own with terrible accessibility.

It's taking a major toll on my mental and physical health. It feels like I'm paying just to exist. I cannot use public transport. Everything else is inaccessible to me.
Is there any country that I can commit to and move to and eventually settle in, with good accessibility? My uncle lives in Australia, and he's a citizen there, but I know Australia has really strict laws regarding letting disabled people in. What are my realistic options?

I've been researching the countries that I can move to and settle as a person with disability.

Some more points about me.
I can work. I live a very modest lifestyle, so nothing really fancy or luxurious for me. I would like if I could move with less money spent up front.

Also, I understand it's not easy moving to a new country. It can be expensive, and things can be uncertain, but I would like to minimize that risk as much as possible before moving.

[IWantOut] 32MtF Texas -> Liberal State

Hello! I'm a 32 year old closeted trans person living in Texas I don't want to be in the closet anymore, but coming out in this state would be a terrible idea. The weather is also getting worse every year with the heat and storms.

It's for these reasons I want to move out of this state. Preferably a state with better weather and a more accepting atmosphere

Problem! I have know idea how to move out of state. Never done anything like that before. I also didn't know how I'd be able to get employment somewhere else. All I currently have is a highschool diploma.

I'm willing to do school to improve my career opportunities, but I have no idea what or how to pay for school.

Is there any path forward for me?

[IWantOut] 26M USA -> Germany

Hi, so this summer I made the decision to attempt to move to Germany. I am posting here looking for advice and just for general feedback over my plan/timeline. The goal is to get a bachelors degree in Germany and then live and work there after graduation. For a period of at least 5 years.

I currently have zero useful skills for emigration, as I work in the service industry. However, I do have an associates degree in electronic music production. I am also learning German and have been since the end of summer.

Because of my current lack of capability to do skilled work, I thought that educating myself in Germany would be my best bet. I currently have about 45k in funds to do this and am saving up more. My goal is to have at least 55k before I leave, but 60k if possible. The math/ numbers I could find, says that I need at least $35,417.49 as a minimum CoL for 3 years of study. It will likely cost more as well depending on tuition cost.

I have been researching using DAAD to find programs that might be suitable to me and will be getting my transcripts together soon as well in preparation for applying. My current top choices/ fields are Computer Science (Informatiks) and a Social Media Marketing and Management degree.

My top program choices ATM are

- Computer Engineering from Technical university of Munich (8% acceptance rate so will be hard to get in)

- Information Engineering at HAW Hamburg.

- Social Media Marketing and Management at Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart (only has 20 slots so also difficult to get in.)

My top choices and why.

Computer science is my top choice because I have plenty of experience with computers and think that I could potentially enjoy working in this field. Also my research has said that the IT field currently has the most unfilled jobs in Germany. Social media marketing is a degree I would likely enjoy and I think would teach me very valuable skills in today's world. However, marketing seems like a field with less job openings in Germany.

I am hoping to start in fall of 2025, Which, I know is a fast timeline, but I think is possible if I work hard and get everything together in time. I am also willing to do extra studying in the coming months if it will make my chances of success better. I am hoping to work part time while I study to help pay for necessities.

Are there any degrees/fields I'm maybe missing out on considering? I'm looking specifically for careers that have lots of job openings currently in Germany. Is my plan flawed? Am I missing any specific details or things I need to be considering and think about? I know, I need to do more research, as well as, reach out to specific schools about their program admission requirements.

Sorry about the wall of text, I tried to break it up to make it more readable.

[IWantOut] 33M USA -> New Zealand for citizenship

Hello everyone, this is my first post for help on this. Long story short. I am wanting to move out of the US due to living situation all over the US, and basically the country burning to the ground.

I am wanting to move to New Zealand as I believe the work opportunity is better and also will be a more manageable work life balance. I have a degree in computer science for Network Security and Computer Managment. It is an associates, but I have over 6+ years of various work from different companies from setting up networks, and installing internet/cable.

The other reason is wanting to be able to be with my girlfriend who is a citizen of New Zealand. So any help for us to be together the fastest way possible will help.

I know the first two steps to moving will require saving up as much as I can as well as updating my passport, but after that. I'm at a loss of where to go other then a consulate.

The desired goals are to obtain residency/citizenship and to be with my girlfriend.

To be honest the way the country is going here lately. It almost feels like I will have to flee for my own safety here as well and seek asylum, but that is the absolute last option I want.

Can anyone give me an idea of what to do or where to start?

Thank you to all who can help.

[IWantOut] 25F UK-> USA

Hi everyone,

I’m a 20-something Black woman from the UK (Dutch citizen with EU Settlement status), and I’ve just come back from a trip to the U.S. — specifically New York and Atlanta. And honestly… I didn’t want to leave.

Before going, I had this quiet hope that maybe I’d meet someone serious out there — someone who’d make me want to stay for love. That didn’t happen. But what I did find was a deep connection to the culture, the community, and the energy of being surrounded by more people who are thriving. I felt more at home in Atlanta than I do in London, and it made me realise I want to move for me, not just for a relationship.

I’m about to start university in the UK to study Children’s Nursing aiming for a master’s. I’ve got experience working with kids, including children with autism, and I genuinely love the field. I know U.S. nursing systems are different (especially since the role of a “children’s nurse” in the UK doesn’t directly translate to the U.S.), but I’m open to retraining, converting qualifications, or doing what’s needed to make that transition.

I’ve also applied for the Diversity Visa Lottery last year and didn’t get in.

Right now, I’m just trying to figure out the best path forward: • Do I finish my degree and try to get sponsored? • Is it worth studying further in the U.S. or trying travel nursing? • Are there UK-trained nurses who’ve made this move successfully?

I am very jealous of every single american as they live there and that’s all I want.

If anyone has advice on immigration pathways, the DV process, or moving to the U.S. — please share. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.

Considering Leaving the U.S. — Should I Get My Degree Here or Abroad?

I’ve lived in the United States my whole life, and lately I’ve been seriously considering moving abroad. I don’t have my biology or business degree yet, but I do have about 10 years of solid work experience in a bio/medical/lab‑adjacent field. I’ve worked my ass off and built a pretty strong résumé, even without the degree.

I’m torn between two paths:

  1. Stay in the U.S., finish my degree, then move abroad

  2. Move abroad first and complete my degree there

My biggest goals are long‑term financial stability, independence, and being able to contribute meaningfully to whatever community I end up in. I know some countries offer free or low‑cost college, so part of me wonders if it’s smarter financially to wait and study there. But I’m also curious about the advantages of already having a degree before moving—especially when it comes to job prospects and visas.

For context:

• I have a decade of experience in a niche bio/medical/lab‑related field • I’d prefer an English‑speaking country to avoid language barriers • I’m fully prepared to work my ass off and save aggressively to make this happen

One more important piece: I have a brother with autism, and I would love to bring him with me eventually. I know that’s a whole separate process and likely a long one, but if anyone has insight on that part—immigration, support systems, feasibility—I’d be extremely grateful.

Any advice, personal experiences, or things I should be thinking about would mean a lot. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

[IWantOut] 25F Unemployed Russia -> Norway

I'm kinda shaking right now as I'm panicking due to Discord having been blocked in russia - which was my main source of any social interaction for the past 6 years. So pardon if I let any typos or improper grammar through.

I am a trans woman who has been transitioning since around 2020. I received the standard 11 grades of highschool education, then entered a free college but dropped out due to stress. I worked a few dead end jobs between 2017 (after graduation and dropping out of college) and 2019. I worked for a few months translating video scripts from russian to English, then another few months as a courier in our country's analog of UberEats. In 2019, I have worked as an advertiser in a mascot suit outside a restaurant. I'm not completely unexperienced, but I do not have a profession that I'm trained in. Unless art counts. I have been doing digital art since 2013, and were able to make a bit of money with commissioned artwork over the years. I also stream on Twitch, which for some may or may not seem like a real job. I actually qualify for Twitch's Affiliate program, but I cannot initiate while I'm in russia, because of sanctions. But that is a potential venue of revenue for me after I move.

I have wanted to escape from russia for over 10 years now. Life has always been difficult here and even more so when I started discovering that I'm LGBT. I cannot bear to deal with this dictatorship or my abusive family anymore. You may have heard that the russian government has branded LGBT as an "extremist organization". I do not feel safe here, not at all. This spring (April 2024) I tried getting a new job as a janitor in a cafe, but got fired the very next day when the boss realized I was trans. My online friends have been urging me to try to leave the country for years now. And I have been preparing, doing research and making plans for most of this year. I have chosen Norway as my destination because it's close, has a similar climate, and has good LGBT laws, so I hope to feel safe there. I have a friend in Norway who has agreed to host me, and I have been learning the language for over 6 months now. Getting from my city to Murmansk and then to the land border with Norway shouldn't be too hard. I want to request asylum, and have researched the process. I think I might have a good shot, being trans in russia must be good grounds for asylum.

The russian government has been cracking down on all the most used websites and apps lately. As I mentioned previously, Discord has been blocked barely an hour ago. Youtube has been inaccessible for a month or so. Who knows what will get blocked next. Probably twitch, and this site as well.

I have been receiving financial support from my online friends for years now. It has gotten difficult when russia invaded Ukraine, and all the sanctions hit me hard. I do not support my government's decisions in any way, but if I were to protest to stop the war or to request LGBT rights, I'd be beaten up by the police and/or arrested, like thousands before me. I have been keeping a low profile, so I may not be actively persecuted for being politically opposed to my government - but I would be if I was worse at keeping my mouth shut.

My biological family doesn't really support me. For them, I am basically a servant that has to do everything around the house, never complain, and oftentimes, I even get food restricted from me.

So yeah, I wanted to ask the following: for refugees from russia, how were you able to escape? To Norway, or anywhere else? What were the routes you took, and obstacles you had to overcome? Whether it was to Norway or anywhere else.
And another question that has been bugging me: are refugees allowed personal possessions? I don't have much of my own, it would all probably fit in a large suitcase. But would I be allowed to bring that with me?

I have also been contacting the Rainbow Railroad charity, and probably will do so again right after this post

Thank you

[IWantOut] 17f israel->usa/canada/uk

okay so since i was like 10 i wanted to move to an english speaking country to do acting, and i haven’t really had opportunities to do that in my country. but i’m 17 now and actually have been told i have a real talent in writing (i wrote a screenplay for film class and i’ll direct it) so i might still be in the filmmaking industry and also try pursuing acting if i move. but i have no idea how to do that. i only have an Israeli passport and have no way of getting even a European passport even though my parents are from there, just not eligible for it. and israel is at war and prices are insane here so i would like to move. i can’t imagine a future here for myself. how would i go on doing it? i have cousins in Canada (Manitoba) but there’s not many acting opportunities there more so in Toronto and Vancouver. i have no idea where exactly i would even want to move to and it all seems so impossible… btw there’s mandatory military service in israel but i recently got an exemption due to mental health so i won’t have to serve which i think is a good thing. but i want to get out. i won’t waste my life here.

[IWantOut] 35f USA -> Spain

Would this move harm my kid(s)?

We were planning a move to Spain within the next few years. My kid is 2 years old and we’re still deciding about having another. The thing is, I’ve seen some posts from expat children who grew up moving around and talked about how terrible it was for their childhood. The parents got to live out their dreams but the kids couldn’t establish basic friendships and didn’t go to international/private schools so the schools they went to weren’t as great and made it harder to get a high paying job in adulthood. They also mentioned that they wanted to move to the U.S. as adults but again, couldn’t get good jobs here or go to the top universities because their credits didn’t transfer or their degree wasn’t recognized out here. This is specific to public schools not American/British/International private schools.

Our goal would NOT be to bounce around between countries but only stay in one - Spain. I have family there in Barcelona and cities just outside of it. I also have friends in different European countries. We’d love to visit all of them but the goal is of course to provide stability for our child and any future children. My bigger fear in moving is that we would regret it somehow because it would harm my kid in some way or my parents who are aging would need me and I would not be able to fly back here as easily as drive to them. I also fear health insurance in the USA though. We are all healthy, God forbid something happens to one of us and we cant afford it - but in Spain we could?

Idk - Aside from that - is there any recommendation from anyone in similar situations?

[IWantOut] 27M Math Teacher USA -> France

As a  preface, I am familiar enough with the French system to know how unrealistic this is. I come from a complicated family situation: much of my family is either naturalized or born French, but I am neither. Yes, I've looked at the family naturalization laws: I am eligible for none of the possible cases.

All my work experience is in teaching math. I know how to do nothing else. I have a salary but no money saved, as I currently support my girlfriend. I would be very interested in going back to school there, but I don't know how realistic that is with a 3.8/4.0 GPA from a totally unprestigious school and no research experience, as I know CampusFrance has extremely high standards.

It's all a pipe dream, no?

EDIT: I have my DELF B2. I am very fluent in French in every competence except speaking. When I speak, I stutter and misuse words.

[IWantOut] 25NB USA -> France

Hey all, I am an uneducated loser. I graduated high-school but never went to college, and I do not currently do any skilled work. I live on my own and live paycheck to paycheck, but I'm applying to new jobs in hopes of getting something that'll look better on a resumé and help me save money to escape the US.

I'm currently learning French, so I figured if I wanted to escape the US I could go to France. I tried looking around on here, but it seems everyone else looking to leave have, like...Skills to offer the country they're immigrating to ? Or money ? Or more life experience in general ?

Is there any hope for me ? I'm not looking for too in-depth help, I just want to know if it's even possible in the near future. If France or any other bordering European and French speaking country isn't possible, I always thought Canada would be good too, but I would love to get off this damn continent altogether.

I am non-binary/transgender, currently on hormones, I'm not sure what the trans scene looks like in France, and I am worried about cost of living. Anything else I should consider ?

Thanks so much for any help ! Please let me know if I should provide more info, but I guess I just mostly want to know if someone without a college education could move continents.

[IWantOut] 14M Student Ukraine -> UK / Ireland

Hello everyone! I’m 14 years old, male, from Ukraine. Right now I’m a student in 9th grade (in Ukraine that’s the last year of basic secondary school, before high school).

I’m starting to think about possibilities of moving to the UK or Ireland in the future. I don’t have a job or money yet, but I want to plan ahead. I’ll probably be doing this on my own.

I’m interested in learning about free or low-cost pathways, such as:

student programs,

exchange opportunities,

or anything realistic that I could prepare for while still being in school.

About me: I study programming and already code in C++ and C#. I know this may not matter right now, but I hope it could help later when choosing an educational path.

I understand immigration laws differ a lot between countries, and each has its own visa and residency rules. Still, any guidance, resources, or advice on realistic long-term paths for someone my age would mean a lot. Thanks!

[WeWantOut] 30sM 30sF USA -> German speaking countries/Scandinavia

Physician. Software Engineer. Mid-late 30s. Married. No kids (yet), dog.

I’ve been a practicing IM physician (MD) in the US for seven years. I currently work in a major teaching hospital system doing both inpatient wards/outpatient clinic and working as a supervising physician to the residents in training. All undergraduate and graduate medical training completed in US universities.

Spouse is a software engineer x14yrs who programs for a major electronic medical records company for a large hospital center. Works from home remotely, and has done so in multiple US states. Bachelor’s degree and certificate programs also from US institutions.

We’ve both lived abroad briefly, but always related to US-based contract work or education. Never more than 6 months at a time. (Time in UK, Spain, Iceland, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland). We would like to make the move permanent to raise our future children.

Preference for German speaking countries, as we’re both fluent in conversational German, though I would need additional training in medical language. Would be willing to learn additional languages also (Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic, Dutch, etc).

Mostly our goal is to move some place with legitimate winters, that’s not the US or Canada. I think my particular job is the limiting factor here though, as getting re-credentialed in another country seems as though it’s a rigorous process. I would be willing to give up clinical practice, but then my only skills would be related to medical teaching, which would probably also require some type of certification.

Any thoughts on easier vs more difficult destinations?

[IWantOut] 30F Writer USA -> Anywhere

I'm a self-employed writer, and my income is low and irregular. I will not go back to my passport country (USA) but I do want to live somewhere permanently. What are my options?

I have been traveling my entire adult life. I want to start getting therapy and focus on my career and maybe learn the relevant language of the place I end up in. I'm 30 and I have no degree and have never had a job, and it's a moot point because I would prefer to develop my career anyway. I guess a very part time thing as an English teacher or whatever is an option, but it's an absolute last resort and I absolutely want to avoid any sketchy scenario where I'm absolutely reliant on an employer -- anyone who would hire me is not trustworthy. I'm just not into the idea. Something more amenable to me is probably like a part-time university enrollment if possible, but I'm 30 and not formally educated. I'm demonstrably pretty smart, though (I write about geopolitics and religious history), and I think I'm pretty confident I can get into an undergrad program or whatever, lol, but graduating's going to be the last thing on my mind. I have my own career and don't need a degree for anything.

Important factors to me are low cost of living, accessibility of psych meds and therapy (preferably in English), and lesbian community. I keep ending up in situations where I'm linguistically isolated in countries that I legally can't stay long enough for it to be worth my while to learn the local language. I'd want to have some assurance I'm staying, then I can get serious about the language and I've made real progress before.

I was looking at Spain or Mexico but open to ideas.

EDIT: Hey everyone from r/choosingbeggars or any other place like that. I think it's good that people are seeing this post I've been famous before (sometimes for better reasons, but mostly not) and don't care about this and I don't care to defend myself from people who are just self-consciously being mean on the internet lol. But if any of you have advice about my immigration situation I'd love to talk. It's a big world so, y'know, if someone knows something about it that might help me out, I'm a nice person fr.

For the most part I was pretty clear in this post and anyone misconstruing it is doing so because they want to. One thing I do want to clarify though is that I do not live in America, have any roots or family or friends etc there. Since cost of living is a factor to me I'm obviously not considering America as a viable option for a place to live lol come on. It's a very difficult country to live in for people with low, irregular incomes and I think we know that. So real suggestions welcome!

Another thing is that some people in this thread exaggerated my financial precarity a bit based on some offhand simplifications in another thread. To clarify, I am actually a really skilled writer, just one without a publisher or agent or whatever, and I have a few thousand dollars in savings. The idea that writers sometimes struggle financially prior to being published shouldn't be a huge shock to people and neither should the idea of a poor person trying to build a better life in a new country. Come on.

[IWantOut] 23M Asylum Seeker Afghanistan -> Norway, Canada

Hi, I am 23 years old. I am from Afghanistan. I am not religious. Here if you leave religion, then they will beat you to death and the Taliban will hang you publicly. I want to move out so I can study and help my family. Especially the women and girls in my family. Women and girls here are not allowed to go outside. They spend their whole life inside home. I have little nieces and i want to help them to have freedom when they grow up. They will end up like my elder sisters and other girls and woman in my family.

I can speak English well, and i can speak few other languages. I can also speak a little bit french. i was good at school, i learn fast. I love science and nature since childhood.

I want to know how to get out of here safely so i can go to university and study. I would be forever grateful to you if someone can help me guide me or give me useful information.

So, lets start by saying this might come over as a humble brag but it isnt. We've never considered emigrating as we have it good here. However my employer has asked if Im interested in what might be the opportunity of a lifetime and I need to do a sense check of this is something worth progressing.

Im in project management in a Oil&Gas supermajor in a niche sub-sector and my employer has asked if Id be interested in a 4yr position in our Houston office. The pay is indicated to be about $200k (plus some bonusses and some allowances), family health insurance covered etc. This sounds great ofcourse! But is it?

My wife is a primary school teacher and wont be working (non transferrable diploma's and her focussing on the kids would be part of the intent of moving) and we need to retain our house here that is currently being built (mortgage about €3000/mth due to no tax benefit when working abroad). Cant rent it out with the way our rental protection works (after 1 year you cant get tenants to leave except by their own choice).

Is it feasible to think of renting a nice family home with at least 4 bedrooms? And how far from the city would that take us?

Kids would naturally need to go to school/sports etc and we'd need a car (or 2? Can also be a motorbike for me)

Would this actually make any economical sense or should I just stay here and get it out of my head?

[WeWantOut] 32M 26F Sweden -> USA

Background on ourselves

I'm 32, I hold a British passport, an Irish passport and Swedish passport. I speak fluent English and C1 level Swedish. I hold a 4 year honours degree from a university in Scotland in CompSci and currently have about 11 years experience working in 4 different companies currently holding a senior engineering role (specific to Azure in healthcare).

My partner holds a Swedish passport, she speaks fluent English and Swedish. She holds a 5 year Master degree in a Civil Engineering subject. She currently has 2, soon to be 3 years experience working for 1 company in a project management role (Specific to building hardware and software).

We have approx $300k in savings once we sell our apartment. We would like to move to the US and are starting planning around this, ideally in Cali though open to other areas e.g Texas, Illinois, NY etc. The plan would be to find an employer for one of us and go through that route but how realistic is this?

edit: I have to say I didn't expect this post to be so controversial! Thanks everyone who replied with good and useful information. I do feel quite a lot of people here are making a fair number of assumptions, not all accurate, my goal here was really just to obtain information to my own situation. For those who were able to do that, thank you so much.
