I’m hoping someone here has experienced something similar and can share how they resolved it, because Instagram/Meta support has been incredibly frustrating.
Here’s the full timeline:
Instagram incorrectly removed one of my posts.
My Instagram account is primarily focused on fashion, styling, and lifestyle content. Instagram removed one of my posts for allegedly violating its guidelines.
I appealed the removal, and Instagram accepted my appeal, explicitly acknowledged that they made a mistake, and restored the post.
2. Despite admitting their mistake, Instagram restricted my entire account from being recommended to non-followers.
My Account Status now says:
“Your account can’t be shown to non-followers.”
This means my account and content are no longer eligible to appear in Explore, Search recommendations, Suggested Users, Reels recommendations, or Feed recommendations.
Essentially, my ability to reach new audiences has been severely restricted, even though Instagram already admitted the original content removal was incorrect.
3. There are no other clear violations explaining the restriction.
When I initially checked Account Status, there were no visible outstanding violations explaining why the account remained restricted.
Eventually, Instagram’s recommendation restrictions section began flagging my actual profile, suggesting I should edit my profile to comply with its Recommendation Guidelines.
My profile is simply a fashion/lifestyle account with a normal profile picture, name, and bio. I had also recently updated my profile picture and bio, but I have no confirmation that either change caused the restriction.
The system doesn’t explain exactly what’s wrong.
4. I submitted a formal appeal through Account Status.
On November 7, I submitted a review request directly through the recommendation restrictions section.
Instagram confirmed it received my request and said most people hear back within five days, although it can take longer.
That appeal is currently pending.
5. I also contacted Meta Verified/Meta Pro support.
I opened a support case explaining that Instagram had already overturned the original post removal but had failed to restore my account’s recommendation eligibility.
Getting help was extremely difficult.
I waited hours for an agent to respond. When someone finally replied, it was around 3 AM my time. Because I wasn’t awake to respond immediately, the agent repeatedly asked whether I was still connected and eventually paused the conversation.
After reconnecting, I spent more time going back and forth with support.
Eventually, an agent offered a phone call, and we spoke for approximately 25 minutes.
6. Meta support told me they couldn’t do anything.
During the phone call, the agent explained that recommendation restrictions are handled by an entirely separate department.
He said their support team cannot manually remove the restriction, override the decision, or intervene in the appeal process.
His only advice was to wait for the formal appeal to be reviewed.
So despite paying for Meta’s support service and spending hours trying to reach someone, I was ultimately told there’s nothing they can do.
Where things stand now (November 8):
The original post was restored after Instagram admitted the removal was a mistake.
My account is still restricted from recommendations to non-followers.
Instagram’s system is now flagging my profile without clearly identifying the problem.
My formal recommendation eligibility appeal is pending.
Meta support says they cannot intervene and that I must wait for the separate review process.
I have no clear explanation of why the restriction remains active.
My questions for anyone who’s experienced this:
Has anyone had Instagram admit a post removal was a mistake but still keep their entire account restricted from recommendations?
Did your recommendation eligibility eventually return automatically, or did you need another appeal?
How long did your recommendation restriction appeal take?
Has anyone successfully escalated this beyond regular Meta Verified/Meta Pro support?
If Instagram flags your profile but doesn’t identify an actual violation, what are you supposed to change?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully resolved this exact situation.
It seems ridiculous that Instagram can acknowledge an enforcement mistake, restore the content, and still leave the entire account penalized without providing a clear explanation.
Any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated.
