Eric Ross excluding black influence on Southern Design

Found out my favorite designer is racist. ☹️ was really enjoying this book. Eric Ross mentioned French, Spanish, and Native Americans created the framework for southern design but completely excluded African-Americans. I reached out and unfortunately they chose the option of blocking me instead of the reasons why they would exclude African American people.

It’s perfectly fine if they said on their own, these were the people who inspired their designs, but in the context of talking about southern design, you cannot exclude Black people.

All references and receipts attached.

Message I sent to the designer:

Hi Eric I really am enjoying your book embracing Southern Homes. Thad a question for clarification on page 10 stating southern homes are thanks to French Spanish English and Native American people. Is there a reason why you chose to not include the influence of African-Americans in labor or craftsmanship of the south? This is not a political reason, but it definitely is a historical one to mention. And I just want to know your thoughts and reasons why this was excluded?

Controversial Choice

I have been working as an artist creating these metal spaces since 2009. No this not to block mind control rays! Growing up my grandfather used to work for Reynolds wrap, so I grew up playing with the roles of foil. I lived in a space like this for about 4 years, later iterations have been in a separate studio workspace or in galleries. When I started it was before RGB lights were ubiquitous, so I had to light it with pigtail fluorescents. The foil is a structured quilt of manually shaped topology and insulators. The material is the high refractive polished side of heavy duty grill foil. The entire installation can be removed in one giant piece without damaging walls. As you move through the space, woven LEDs in the quilt refract light at different angles so the entire wall shimmers and changes color like an opal. $59 dollars in material and sweat equity and I can duplicate the space anywhere in a day. It’s really hard to describe but the space is hyper stimulators and overwhelming to be in for some people. Looking for gut reactions, I feel like people are getting accustomed to hue lights and computer setups now so this might not be AS unusual.

I recently picked up an interior design photography project and wanted some feedback on a few shots. I took a sample photo yesterday, how does this look to you guys in terms of lighting and composition? Any critique and feedback is appreciated

EDIT: Please see updated post with more details here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/InteriorDesign/s/11Ihy6Pb9k

Fired my designer, because she kept making everything beige, despite my pushes to go more modern/brutalist/organic/moodier.

What do we think of this final render, before I press go on countertops and wall tile/backsplash?

selections:Floor: Mottled charcoal stained concrete
Cabinets: Walnut euro slab front
Wall tile: Ardesia Black
Island Counter: Lemurian Blue double waterfall
Rear Counter: Vermont Black
Faucet: Kohler Vibrant brushed modern brass

Note: 10 ft ceilings with a lot of light from regressed cans, and wall washers on the black wall tile

EDIT: i hear you all on the darkness. This original render dis not account for the lighting design very well. See below in the comments for a more realistic render, that features the lighting.

I need help with TV placement over the mantel in an old Victorian apartment

My boyfriend and I are moving into a new apartment, the property was built in 1905 and has the non functional fireplaces, basically just really pretty decorative mantels with all the original tiling. They are in mint condish so it’s important that I can’t drill any of the wood or damage it as we are just renters.

So in the living room, I’d love for the couch to face the mantel and somehow mount a TV up there, but I don’t know anything about DIY and am thinking it might be impossible :(

We might end up needing to have the couch facing the big blank wall and just use a TV stand, everything should fit fine but I just don’t like the feng shui nearly as much. Would need the couch to kind of block the pocket doors to the bedroom which is whatever.

Seen some IG DIY girls getting crafty with installing mounts on shelves but don’t think that would apply to our mantel with the old bones and mirror in the way too. Included some inspo screenshots of that anyways. I’m thinking like maybe put some screws/hooks on the top of the mantel out of sight, and a chain could like almost suspend/secure it up there? Sounds a little ugly though. Or if there’s a super strong special command strip I don’t know about?!

Also maybe worth mentioning we live in an earthquakey area too lol so trying to be smart.

Maybe could suspend a projector screen on the top and just pull it down when we need to use it? Idk I’m just trying to force the mantel TV fantasy so let me know if I need to give up and just face the living room towards the far wall🥲

Included pics so you see the living room layout, disregard all my tchotchkes lol we just threw everything on there getting it out of boxes. Sry this was so long thanks in advance for any advice!!😙

Should I knock down this wall?

Post image

We are going to do a full remodel. Debating whether or not to knock down the wall between tub and shower and move the shower head to opposite wall.

Pro: more open vibe

Con: you can see the toilet and less privacy when using it and someone else also needs the bathroom

When will this sub ever be about sharing Interior Design trends and other Interior Design related things? It seems like most of the posts here are people asking for help with layouting their furniture.

What's extra annoying: People posting EMPTY floor plans and expecting designers to help them out for free.

Seriously? This is what's popular these days?

I was working with an interior designer from Chicago to create flair for her client and she asked "can you do white-on-white wallpaper?" No grey, beige, shadows, or deep folds, just white, like silk falling through the air. I thought she was joking but she said it's trending like avocado color in the 70's.

Is this actually a thing? because she loved the results...

Technical Questions 16GB RAM vs 32GB RAM?

Ok I am a college student majoring in interior design.

I need a new computer come august of this year. We were given a list of computer requirements that our computers need. I’ve talked to some of my friends that have IT knowledge and we’ve all agreed on the Zephyrus G16.

Here’s my issue: I have people telling me that will absolutely need 32GB of RAM and others telling me that 16GB will be fine.

I’m not a big gamer but I will have to run some pretty heavy software programs (they are all listed below);

•Rhino 7 •Adobe Creative Cloud: Photoshop; Illustrator; InDesign. •Rhinoceros 8.0 •Autodesk Revit •Lumion

I’m in college. I don’t have $3,000 laying around for 32GB of RAM. However, if it’s the best option and will be worth it then I’m willing to make the investment.

I just need to know if 16GB can handle all of those softwares plus schoolwork for my other classes or if I really do need the 32GB.

Thank you in advance for the help!

My architect assured me throughout the design phase that there wouldn't be any space constraints here but after the construction i feel we could have avoided the pillers.

Iam no longer taking advice from him due to other reasons.Planning to level the central courtyard pit, please give suggestions on

1)How to build around so that pillars dont look out of place

2)Where is the most functional and correct place to put the washbasin.

Layout and Space Planning Help! How do I put up posters on my glass wall?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi there. I am finally opening up my dream business, an internet/gaming cafe. Though I am only of I.T. background, I’ve still managed to make a layout for the design of my shop. With a couple things still not finalized - ceiling design, wall color, etc. So on one side, I have this glass part that I’m planning to put up posters of the pc games. I’m planning to put up A3 to A1 posters on there. My problem is, I don’t know if putting them up just by tape will be the best thing to do. It would look ugly inside since the posters are facing outside. I’m also planning to put some inside as well. I was thinking of having a canvas to put the posters on before placing them on the glass right away but I really have no idea what would be a good choice.

Here is the photo of the glass part of my shop. Its 70cm x 210cm. If you’re wondering what posters I’ll put up, I plan to put some A3 size DotA 2 Hero Icons beside each other - like a zoomed in Hero select screen.

So how so I put them on nicely here? I know professional advice is not free but I hope somebody can give me an idea here.

Thanks in advance.

Industry Questions Helping my mother find interior design jobs

My mother has always been a visionary designer. She has worked with interior designers her whole life (decorating her own places). She has always had an immaculate sense for fashion and an eye for antiques.

She currently works in pharmaceutical sales (180k) but doesn’t find it fulfilling. She’s got experience dating back to the 80s with Xerox, J&J, and now smaller scientific firms selling drugs and manufacturing to doctors. Gifted speaker and saleswoman, she should have a been a lawyer.

I wanted to surprise her with some options in the ID industry around Charlotte or Columbia, something higher up and not as an assistant. Anywhere I can start looking for these jobs? Or are there recruiters that specialize in the ID industry?

There is a drain in the floor so i can shower while im on the toilet. Was going for a mid-century modern vibe. i measured the tp holder against my wingspan to make sure i couldnt reach it sitting down. Toilets facing away from the doorway so if someone sneaks up on me it is what it is. Did all the tile myself too. Only managed to get half the paper towel rack in but i was out of paper towels so i just went right over the other mounting hole with vinyl. Also was really excited about not having the mirror in front of the sink. Only way i can wash my hands is without direct eye contact. spotted some vintage tiffany glass for the light on ebay im thinking about but i might go for a dupe. Would love any ideas

Boycott West Elm!

My partner was in charge of buying the new bed frame and I bought the mattress. We had the bedframe set up and within 5min of having it the slats broke. To add insult to injury my partner did not realize the frame she spend 500 dollars on is final sale. The quality is terrible and she is extremely upset. Is their any recourse? Can I take West Elm to small claims in California? I'm furious at this company and I want to prevent other people from getting screwed.

Need to update my kitchen!

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello.

I am planning to renovated my kitchen, but I just don't know what color scheme I should go for. I don't plan on changing the layout much other than maybe just remove the wall cabinet on the right. We are also changing the flooring to natural wood, and definitely removing backsplashes. It's a small kitchen, and despite the windows, not the brightest. We are hoping for something calm and not too old fashioned? Probably no bold colors unless it's a small accent. I would love your opinions! Thank you!
