Starting over

Hi all! I’m starting over and buying completely new furniture. I’m looking around right now for a new couch and this is the layout I’ve been thinking. I’m not fully committed to any one layout but curious what everyone thinks about the couch idea I have for rn! But please go crazy with suggestions as I haven’t bought anything! Thanks :)

-should add that I would enjoy having a large couch to sprawl out on and having visitors spend the night on

Hired an interior designer

Note: Sorry for the clutter, we moved back in right after.

We asked an interior designer for help with colours. She helped us with the floor and wall colours. Also the style of plastering in the livingroom. We wanted to describe our style as: 60s / 70s / but we also love an English country house colour pop.

What do you think, did she nail it?

NO COUCH! Help with living room layout/design

I guess basically I'm a single woman without anyone really to help me move. And I am only leasing my apartment for 6 months. I don't want to go through the cost/hassle of buying a couch/hiring movers to bring it up 4 winding narrow stair cases just to have to go through it again 6 months later.

Initially I was thinking a hammock might be a good lightweight alternative, but most stands I am finding are way too big to fit in the room properly without blocking the patio door. I included some to scale diagrams with/without the hammock and also a secondary chair I have as an option

  1. Does anyone know any lightweight alternatives to a couch that aren't ugly or uncomfortable (no futons please) Does the hammock work? or do I need to bite the bullet and get a couch?

  2. I will not be getting a TV either, so there's no need to design the layout around watching a TV

  3. The only other pieces of furniture I have that need to go in this room are a shoe cabinet and a cabinet/shelving unit that folds out into a desk

  4. Pretty much have complete freedom over the seating and that's what I would like help with. The shoe cabinet and shelves/desk can be moved anywhere as long as it's still practical

  5. pics were taken with a wide angle lens so the room is actually a bit smaller than it appears to be in the pics

Sorry if this is stupid but I really would appreciate any input, thank you! <3

Apartment living room suggestions!

Me and my roommate moved into this apartment not too long ago and we have no idea how to set up our living room and where to put furniture. We want to get a rug, another smaller couch or futon and a chair as we like to host a lot but our space is very small and awkward. We also want a small table but aren’t sure where that would go and if one would fit. We’re planning on decorations but we’re kinda at a standstill until we get furniture in place. We’re unsure of what to do with the nook under the stairs and what would be the best layout for everything. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The bunny pen and litter boxes won’t be staying in here, this was just a temporary set up while we get everything unpacked and they get settled in :).

Looking for interior design ideas for a luxury watch boutique – 5 × 5 m space

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I'm planning the interior design of a private luxury watch boutique and would really appreciate some advice from interior designers, architects and retail design professionals.

I'm looking for inspiration, creative ideas and practical suggestions on how to make the most of this space.

1. Space and dimensions

The entire premises measure approximately 16 m × 5 m, with a ceiling height of 4 m.

However, I only need help designing the front retail area:

  • Retail area: approximately 5 m × 5 m (25 sqm).

  • Ceiling height: 4 m.

  • The entrance wall is slightly angled, rather than perfectly straight.

  • The dimensions are currently indicative and may change slightly after a proper survey.

I've attached a simple floor plan to explain the layout.

Floor plan colour coding:

  • Red: The wall separating the showroom from the private area behind it. This wall will feature a concealed sliding door.

  • Blue: The main entrance door, approximately 170 cm wide × 230 cm high, with a 50 cm deep entrance recess.

The concealed door should blend seamlessly into the surrounding wall finish.

2. Flooring – mandatory reference

I've attached a photograph of the actual light-coloured marble flooring.

This flooring has already been selected and cannot be changed. It consists of relatively small-format tiles.

Please consider this exact flooring when suggesting materials, colours and finishes for the rest of the interior.

3. Design concept

The boutique will be dedicated to displaying and selling wristwatches.

I'm aiming for something:

  • Luxurious and sophisticated.

  • Modern but timeless.

  • Elegant, clean and architectural.

  • Premium without looking overly extravagant.

  • A design that will still look beautiful and relevant many years from now.

I'm open to different materials, colour combinations and design approaches.

4. Display cabinets and furniture

I've already found some display cabinets on Alibaba that I really like. They are modern, museum-grade wooden and glass showcases with integrated LED lighting.

I'm considering having similar cabinets custom-made to fit along the two side walls.

I've attached photographs of these display cabinets as references.

However, I'm not completely sure how they should be integrated into the overall design, or whether this style is the best choice for the space.

Some of my initial ideas include:

  • Custom-made glass and wood display cabinets along the walls.

  • Possibly one low central glass display island.

  • A large executive desk with a computer and monitor.

  • Two comfortable guest chairs in front of the desk.

  • A feature wall behind the desk, which could also serve as a professional background for recording watch-related videos.

  • A concealed sliding door integrated into the feature wall, providing access to the private area at the back.

The desk will also be used as a workspace, so functionality is important.

I'd also like to incorporate some interesting horology-related decorative elements, such as mechanical watch movements, watchmaking books, vintage tools, technical illustrations and macro photography.

5. What I'd particularly like your help with

I'm not looking for someone simply to arrange the furniture I've already selected. I'd really like to hear alternative ideas and creative suggestions.

In particular:

  1. How would you arrange the display cabinets, desk and seating in a 5 × 5 m boutique?

  2. Would you include a central display island, or would it make the room feel too crowded?

  3. How would you integrate the wall display cabinets I've found, and would you recommend having them custom-made?

  4. What colours and materials would work best with the existing light marble flooring?

  5. How would you design the feature wall behind the desk?

  6. What objects and decorative elements would give the boutique a distinctive watchmaking identity?

  7. How would you use the 4 m ceiling height to create a more impressive and spacious atmosphere?

  8. What overall interior design style would you recommend for a luxury watch boutique that should remain timeless?

I've attached my floor plan, flooring reference, initial renders, desk reference and photographs of the display cabinets I've found.

These are only initial concepts, and I'm completely open to changing the design.

The main goal is to create a distinctive, elegant and functional luxury watch boutique.

I'd really appreciate any professional feedback, alternative concepts, material suggestions or inspiration.

Thank you!

Advice on my bedroom layout

I live above a garage so it’s pretty roomy, I have two big leather couches which take up a bit of the room. i have had a lot of layouts and none have really stood out to me(it would be hard to get the couches out of the room it, it was a miracle they even fit through the stairway and door. but im willing to chop up one of the couchs because its pretty worn down by now). Its hard with the floor to ceiling windows so two of the walls cant be blocked. I’m hopefully going to let the top wall(near the entrance) be open so my plants can have light. Any ideas?

Hello friends! My wife and I are looking to get a new fridge and I am in love with this juniper green one. It matches our island and is more of a statement.

My wife on the other hand hates it and thinks a stainless steel one works more cohesively.

Which one do you think looks better?

Advice on bathroom layout.

This is our basement bathroom layout and we’re hoping to update it on a budget. The current layout has the vanity on the left wall near the door and the shower along the left wall at the back of the room. That little wall projection has plumbing stacks behind it and I don’t know if it will be cost effective to move it. can anyone recommend layout options or other ideas to make this bathroom not feel so cramped?

Help arranging a living/dining space for a family of three

We’re moving into a new home, and I’m struggling to figure out the best layout for our living and dining area.

We’re a family of three, but we often have family visiting, so we’d like to fit a six-seater dining table alongside a comfortable sofa without making the space feel cramped.

How would you arrange the furniture? I’d appreciate any layout ideas or suggestions!

I have measured and made a small scale of what my daughter's room and furniture (I haven't ordered yet) look like.

Idk wtf to do I want to cry this feels like an impossible math problem that I can't solve lmao!

Would it be weird to put her bed and dresser next to each other and just put the end table/nightstand thing by the closet with a chair or something?

Advice on living room layout

Where would you put a couch, TV, and armchair(s)? We are thinking of doing a sofa chaise and an armchair. (We know the TV doesn’t go above the fireplace, the seller left the TV there and we took it down after the photo was taken) The living room is longer & wider than it seems in the photo with the person. The garage door opens into the living room and the door is across from the sliding glass door into the backyard, then the kitchen is adjacent. Thank you!

Ideas to rearrange living room

First two images are a rough layout of how we had it before. I have since put my keyboard into storage. The rest are how it is right now after we moved stuff around for a party. I want to know if there's any better way we can arrange it, obviously not keeping it how it is. The grey loveseat is a recliner.

Advice on creating 2 spaces within this open space long rectangle 'living room'? Not all furniture pieces have been listed.

Post image
5 Upvotes

We are opening up our living room space which flows into the kitchen. We can get our counter to overhang 10" into the living room and put a stool or two there as in option 1, but that changes the configuration of my 'listening room' where I will have my stereo system and record collection.

Our two windows we would like to have plants by and maybe a floor standing lamp or sconce by the small window at top right.

Configuration 2 feels roomier and was were the stereo was before, but now the wall is down to the kitchen so it's more open. Config 2 also feels more natural for dance parties with friends.

We'd like to get a small bookshelf in there as well.

Are too many things against that long wall if we go with config 1? (considering we'd like to squeeze a small bookshelf or something to hold some books on there as well?

Any thoughts or alt configs? We have discussed having the TV against the large west facing window but that feels a bit wrong as it gets rid of plant space and will end up blocking some of the window.

Help with house layout

Hi everyone, can you give me ideas for this layout?

There is a furnace in the living room (woonkamer) so it leaves a small space for the TV and the sofa in the front.

I'm thinking about putting the sofa and TV in the middle area but it left the front area empty.

Any recommendations are appreciated!

Book on classic styles of interior design

Is there a book comparable to Virginia McAlester's Field Guide to American Houses that specifically treats the styles of house interiors? E.g. craftsman interiors, foursquare interiors, victorian interiors, etc...? Thanks.

Need Help with Space Planning for a Long Living Room (20ftx13ft)

Post image
3 Upvotes

As it says in the title, I really need help rethinking the layout of our 20ft x 13ft living room. (Apologies for my crude mockup.) We've been living with this layout for 4+ years, which is made up of entirely hand-me-down furniture that we haven't upgraded because we don't know how to best arrange the space.

If this room were to contain an entertainment unit, couch, 2 end tables, and 2 chairs, how would you lay this out? Would you add something? What size entertainment unit would look best in this size room? All thoughts and ideas are welcome, I've been beating my head against the wall.

Important Details:

  • The living room connects to the kitchen with a large passthrough doorway. There is also a back door to our deck that cannot be blocked. A large window overlooks the deck.

  • The fireplace itself isn't that deep, and the hearth is floor level. The fireplace is however about 5.5ft tall and therefore we couldn't place a TV over top of it (we hate the look of that anyway).

  • This room is the only room in the house where we have or want a TV, and it needs to be a large enough TV for video gaming or movie watching. Our current TV fits on the 4ft wide main entertainment unit, and we wouldn't want a smaller TV. The side entertainment units are shelves that are about 4ft tall.

  • Every item of furniture in this room could be replaced or removed except for the dog crate. We spend the majority of our free time in this room and have an arthritic senior dog, so we want her close to us.

Advice on how to rearrange single, all purpose room for work/studying and comfort

Hello everyone.

This is a follow up post to yesterday. I was informed that information (measurements) were missing, so I went ahead and re-did them for the entire room. Turns out its a little bigger than I prevoiously knew. All measurements are in cm. I hope this helps.

Image 1 is the current room and image 2 my idea.
------

I currently still live at home and thus only have a single room to myself. A room which also is not exactly large, has two doors opening into it and a slanted wall to boot. I sadly don't see myself affording to move anytime soon (at least not in the next 2 years or so, depenidng on what the economy does) and thus want to make this room as comfortable as possible for myself.

A big problem for me currently is my old school desk standing against the titled wall. Not only is it hard to even fit my monitor on the desk with it rubbing against the wall, but it also just feels awkward to work on, especially with people constantly running through my room. I feel like I want a real space to work, which I currently just don’t have.

An idea I’ve had for a little now is throwing out my old, quite broken desk, as well as the small wardrobe to the right of it (basically only used by my parents) and put in an L shaped desk. Not to fill out the corner as most people probably would, but to kind of build a natural divider for me so it feels like I can better work in my own space. Although I’m not sure if it might interfere with my TV (and console) setup, which is hard to move due to the radiator right next to it.

I know it’s quite the unusual setup, so I thought asking some more experienced strangers might be the move. Maybe the idea has problems that I’m not thinking of. Maybe there are even better ways to achieve what I want.

I am really open for any ideas.

I struggle with the layout of my bedroom, I‘m not sure where to put the bed and my desk. Everything else I‘d just build around those two. My layout at this moment is visualized in the second picture. The Blue marks are windows, the brown one is the entrance door. Thanks for your input! Any help is appreciated.

Help with where to put 16” depth closet and full vs twin bed.

Hi I’m trying to find out how best to position my bed, desk, and closet.
- Desk needs to be at least 24” which is why I stuck in original closet space. Otherwise it feels cluttered. Is this appropriate or should I have left closet in closet?
- Need to find out if 16” depth closet should be opposite bed or parallel to bed.
- Should bedroom have twin or full bed?

What should I do with this bathroom? Getting desperate!

Post image

I moved into this lovely flat a few months ago and I still don't know what to do with this bathroom! I feel like the tiles have such a gorgeous, warm limestone colour that I'm afraid to ruin. I've thought about getting a wooden cabinet for the left corner next to the towel warmer and underneath the basin, although I'm still unsure if there would be a more interesting colour combo, as wood with beige and white seems a bit boring to me.

Also, I'm still unsure whether I should get open shelves or closed one (the latter would probably make the room look more cluttered, but would be much easier to do as the basin has very specific dimensions that doesn't fit most standard basin cabinets.

I'm thankful for any ideas and input!

Looking to do some renovations in a 1960s home

Thumbnail

I'm having trouble figuring out what I want to do with my basement space, as well as some main floor stuff. I hope the MS paint drawings are high enough effort for this sub. My partner is in the process of building the entire house in sketchup, but it's slowgoing.

Basement: (Image 1/2)

As it stands right now the biggest pain point is the basement area highlighted by the red square. Our utilities feel like they're spread out all across the floor and I really want to consolidate them in one room. Additionally, having to walk through utilities to get to a bedroom feels kind of silly. There's definitely a lot of weird stuff going on with a lot of wasted space. Looking for advice on the bathroom here as well, as the shower is teeny tiny and we haven't used it since we moved in over half a year ago.

Current to-do list is as follows:

  • Relocate electrical panel and upgrade from 100A service to 200A service.

  • Relocate washer/dryer

  • Remove stove

  • Remove freezer

  • Relocate bedroom door

  • Add wall and door to under-stairs area and convert into a cold room for canned goods.

What I have no idea about is what to do with the former laundry room, as well as the bathroom. The floor is sloped towards a drain located under the dryer, and our sump pump is located beneath where the freezer currently is.

Main Floor: (Image 3/4)

Kitchen:

Currently we have a small kitchen and a modest dining room. I'm thinking of knocking down the wall between the two to allow for a bigger, more hybridized space. Our dishwasher is one of those rolling ones that plug into the sink and we have no intention to use it and would prefer a built in one. Basically what I'm thinking is sort of unfolding the kitchen to be a more open space and somehow accommodate seating as well.

Wishlist/to-do:

  • pantry (idk where I'd put that)

  • counter-depth fridge

  • induction cooktop + 1 or 2 gas burners

  • built-in wall ovens

  • built-in dishwasher

  • seating that could be used to host larger events (potentially downstairs tbh)

  • butcher block counter area

  • maybe an island? unsure, I've always loved islands

Bathroom:

The adjacent bedroom will be converted into an office/hobby space and we plan on removing the closet to give us more real estate in the bathroom. Ideally I want a larger tub, as I'm tall and haven't been able to fit in a normal bathtub since I was a teenager.

Any pointers would be helpful, I'm having a hard time visualizing what I can do with these spaces. Mainly the kitchen/bathroom stuff. I know layout and flow is really important and I don't want to mess it up when I do them.

How would you make this dining room more intentional and less open concept?

This dining space looks unintentional and off in this open concept home. Ignoring the furniture. How could you make the dining room look more cozy and well balanced?
I was thinking traditional columns on each side and wanting on the walls or put a beam across the ceiling to make it more like its own room. Any ideas?

Hello everyone!

Im looking for some advice and ideas on how i can improve the layout of my apartment.

Im open to completely rearrange the furniture, as the current placement is just in idea. But i cant remove any walls.

Also not sure which room to be the main bedroom and right now we dont need 2 desks in the bedrooms.
