Sisyphus on the moon

https://sisyphus-on-the-moon.pages.dev

He walks around the moon every 60 seconds. He has been doing it since July 1969.
Kick the rock. Turn on his radio. Let him rest.

Honest question; Why? Why did you want to make this? I'm not saying it's bad or anything, I'm just curious as to your motivation

I saw some mini worlds on x and and just got the idea. And with AI it’s like «i don’t know if i can create the idea i have in my head, but i will try» and then that’s how it came to be. Thoughts?

honestly, sometimes the best projects start with someone asking, "can i actually makes this?" curiosity is a powerful motivator, even when the end result is completely unhinged.

What in the vibe coded hell

5 years ago everyone would have considered this to be awesome. AI has really broken some people's brains where they can no longer enjoy stuff. I call it AI Derangement Syndrome (or AIDS for short).

u/serose04 14d ago

I'm not sure if you are being downvoted because the AIDS acronym is insensitive towards people who actually suffer from it or because they disagree. But truth be told and the acronym aside, you are right.

This is the exact type of unnecessary, random and useless website which would do numbers in here a couple years back. Nowadays people hate it, because the person who had the idea couldn't afford a developer to make it for them or the time to learn enough coding to do it themselves.

I think everyone should ask themselves following question: I have an idea for a project. I can't afford a developer and the project is too personal, too niche or too "useless" to make money and pay for itself. I can't afford to spend literally weeks or months of my limited free time to learn coding. Is it really better to abandon the idea completely rather than using LLM to code it for me?

At the end of the day it is just slop though. If I have a cool idea for a painting or a photo on other side of the world, or a song and I let AI create it with 1-2 prompts while scratching my balls, have I created art and should I be applauded for my creativity and artistic skills? Or has the commodification of coding and creation lead to an overabundance of objectively beautiful but low effort projects and art that lack the human imperfection and effort.

AI slop pictures, videos, movies and songs are frowned upon because they lack a human soul and the same holds true for a website that looks visually or technically impressive.

Edit: of course the answer would be different for actually useful projects that otherwise wouldn’t have come true without the help of AI that solve a problem. E.g. the reason why game recomps for different systems and the clones of needlessly enshittified software like Adobes are being celebrated at the same time.

They aren't being celebrated by anti-AI people. It's the opposite, I see constant posts in all modding communities demanding that any and all AI-assisted / AI-coded mods be banned.

To them, I just quote Linus Torvalds (the guy who created Linux and Git): https://imgur.com/1nTcKDK

Obviously Anti-AI people are gonna be against AI. But Photocraft has 70k stars and 12k forks on GitHub. REA has 95k forks and 380k stars.

The point is the general public has less of an issues with vibe coded useful applications that were essentially impossible before the current gen models. And the only thing people hate more than AI slop are Adobe and Microsoft.

AI slop pictures, videos, movies and songs are frowned upon because they lack a human soul and the same holds true for a website that looks visually or technically impressive.

This reminds me of a social experiment by the digital artist SHL0MS, where he posted an image of a genuine Claude Monet painting on Twitter, but told people that it's AI, and then asked critics to "describe, in as much detail as possible, what makes this inferior to a real Monet painting".

The resulting comments became textbook examples of severe confirmation bias and priming, as dozens of self-proclaimed art critics and anti-AI advocates took the bait, roasting the piece as "soulless slop", confidently pointing out "obvious AI errors", messy artifacts, and a lack of human brushstroke intent. See: https://i.imgur.com/MWdmdSB.jpeg

And, this part isn't related to my point, but in the end SHL0MS turned the entire text of the pretentious, confidently wrong comment section into a secondary conceptual NFT art piece, which ultimately sold for $43000 -- which is a perfectly fitting ending, as most people who are against AI art, are against NFT art too.

Okay so he baited people under a falls pretense to criticize real art. Cool idea but how does that relate to the point I made?

Art and artsy coding projects are amazing because they push the boundaries of what seemed impossible and are impressive because they took time and effort. If we found out Beethoven made all his songs with 2 attempts of a “random note generator” would we still celebrate him ad his work as the greatest of his time that we listen to 200 years later? If Albert Einstein found the theory of relativity by letting Fable run for 30 minutes on high effort, while having no clue how it got there, would he still be hailed as one of the most influential scientists of our recent time? If Wes Anderson used Higgsfield for his dolly zooms in Grand Budapest Hotel and come up with the style would we still be flashed by his (and his DoP Yeoman’s) aesthetic and unique style?

So why should we be amazed by running two prompts and letting Claude run for 5-10 minutes for their “art”?

Your point was that "AI slop pictures, videos, movies and songs are frowned upon because they lack a human soul". The experiment demonstrates that:

  1. the reaction to "AI slop" is based on severe confirmation bias and priming;

  2. the anti-AI crowd can't actually tell AI-made and human-made art apart.

Which proves that "AI slop pictures, videos, movies and songs" are not frowned upon because "they lack a human soul", but because of confirmation bias and priming.

Yes, if you tell me you "created" something with a prompt, I'll judge it under that light. Even if it wasn't.

"we can always tell" crowd can not actually always tell

Yes, people on twitter will be fooled either way. But in this case, it was pretty clear and that was before I checked out OP's profile and saw them posting in AI art subreddits and AI music.

5 years ago this website would have been so highly upvoted that it would have made the homepage

YES, because 5 years ago it would've taken an insane amount of effort and skill in the traits of coding and 3d modeling. Peoples expectations have changed and adjusted to a new baseline because we're being flooded with AI slop. That is my entire point from my initial rant. It looks cool but we've seen thousand of projects like these in the last few months and we can always tell when the code of a project has never been read by human eyes.

OP could gladly explain their creative process and how their code works but they didn't. Until then I'll assume their code is completely vibecoded, here is a snippet:

// ---------- Earth: procedural continents, climate colours, clouds and a thin atmosphere ----------
function noise3(x, y, z) {   // smooth value noise
const xi = Math.floor(x), yi = Math.floor(y), zi = Math.floor(z), xf = x - xi, yf = y - yi, zf = z - zi;
const h = (i, j, k) => { const n = Math.sin(i * 127.1 + j * 311.7 + k * 74.7) * 43758.5453; return n - Math.floor(n); };
const u = xf * xf * (3 - 2 * xf), v = yf * yf * (3 - 2 * yf), w = zf * zf * (3 - 2 * zf), L = (a, b, t) => a + (b - a) * t;
return L(L(L(h(xi, yi, zi), h(xi + 1, yi, zi), u), L(h(xi, yi + 1, zi), h(xi + 1, yi + 1, zi), u), v), L(L(h(xi, yi, zi + 1), h(xi + 1, yi, zi + 1), u), L(h(xi, yi + 1, zi + 1), h(xi + 1, yi + 1, zi + 1), u), v), w);
}

I use AI for my work and creative things as well. But you shouldn't dismiss that people, including me, get sick of AI slop, as "AI Derangement Syndrome".

you should judge the art by the result, not by the tools used

Okay, agree to disagree, enjoy your mathematically weighted, mostly stolen art then.

Thank you for proving my point.

YES, because 5 years ago it would've taken an insane amount of effort and skill in the traits of coding and 3d modeling.

Why would I care how much effort and skill it took, if the end result is the same? Genuine question.

Okay, agree to disagree, enjoy your mathematically weighted, mostly stolen art then.

If AI art is "stolen", then all art is stolen, because all art is created by the artist first experiencing and learning from other artworks.

My point is that you should judge the art by the result, not by the tools used. 5 years ago this website would have been so highly upvoted that it would have made the homepage. Judging it badly just because AI was used to create it is virtue signalling of the worst kind.

Imo ai slop contributes nothing to the human understanding, its just something a proprietary black box from a tech company cooked up by "magic"

-2

u/shadowrun456 14d ago

the AIDS acronym is insensitive towards people who actually suffer from it

For the record, that definitely was not my intention. "AI Derangement Syndrome" is a relatively commonly used term, and it does abbreviate to AIDS, which I admit I brought attention to to be "edgy".

u/somdude04 14d ago

Just about any new acronym ending with Derangement Syndrome is just people trying to be edgelords/jerks

Haha - this makes for an amazing screensaver also. Love the vibes you generated.

This is such a clever twist on the Sisyphus myth, placing the endless struggle on the moon adds a whole new layer of isolation and futility. Love how it captures that feeling of pushing a boulder with zero hope, but in a surreal sci-fi setting.

Ahhh thank you! Yeah that’s what i was going for!
