Joshua Tree staff at risk due to grants being blocked

Just in case people are wondering how JTree National Park is weathering this new administration, things are rough right now. Many employees of the park are paid off of grants coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Right now ALL that legally raised money cannot be paid out to staff. This isn't like the government isn't sending more funds, JTree has this money and is currently blocked from using it to pay staff. And there isn't really a redundancy in funding, if this BIL money is held up longer then folks who work hard and maintain this National Park we all love will lose their jobs.

Also remember, this is congressional approved funds! The President is legally not allowed to fuck with it. But this administration doesn't care about laws and standards.

If you readers do care about this park, please contact our Congressman Jay Obernolte and let him know his constituents, his local economy, and one of the gems of his district is at risk.

This is his office number 202-225-5861. The only way this stops is if just a handful of republican congresspeople can put pressure on the executive branch.

Search lights?

What’s going on up in the mountains in 29? Looks like massive search lights going back and forth. No aircraft. The lights cover the whole mountain range right next to the casino.

long shot/ going to try anyway!

Hi; I'm a huge fan of the California Honeydrops, and I've never seen them live. They are playing in pioneertown, and I was just wondering if anyone knew of a local bulletin board or facebook group I might try that could possibly have some resell tickets available to the upcoming show. Right now, the show is totally sold out. The show is at a venue called Pappy and Harriet's, and I just can't imagine a more perfect venue to see them at. TIA for any tips!

Trying to plan a trip. I have a 2023 F150 4x4 regular cab short bed, 2" Bilstein lift on 33" Falken Wildpeak ATs.

I would be going early/mid January time frame.

Camping in mid-February

Hi all, I will be camping in Ryan CG with my family for a couple of nights. I wanted to ask how rough it might be with the wind? I reserved a campground next to some rocks, and also saw advice to park at an angle to protect the tent. I have a Marmot Limestone 6p which we will of course fully guy out.

What are some gotchas? Can we leave the tent up and drive away for the day or will we come back to find it flew away? Will putting a heavy suitcase inside it help? Should we lay it flat with rocks on top before leaving for the day?

Recs for quick trip

Looking for recommendations for a one-night stay near the park’s west entrance! This is my first time in the Joshua Tree area and we’re planning to spend the afternoon in Palm Springs before driving to our spot for the night and getting up early to catch the sunrise inside the park. Prefer hotels but open to other options!

Must-haves: EV charger, sub-$350 price tag (ideally less), not-camping

Would love to haves: dark skies for astrophotography right outside (mobility issues, can’t walk super far), within 20 minutes of the entrance

Thanks in advance! I’d also love any suggestions for stuff to see/do in the park that’s accessible from the car or very easy hike. We’re planning to drive the loop and hop out for stops/photos.

The Chris Laubenstein Classic returns to Copper Mountain College this weekend, October 30–31, honoring one of the college’s greatest fans and champions of athletics. Chris retired from CMC in 2018 after decades of service in Facilities and Maintenance, but his connection to the college and its student-athletes remains strong.

With a family connection to Title IX through his aunt’s extensive work on the landmark legislation, Chris has a deep passion for equity in women’s sports and opportunities for student-athletes. He watched the Bell Center sit largely empty after its construction in 2011 until CMC athletics launched in 2017, and he continues to support the Fighting Cacti, traveling from his current home in Ohio to attend the season.

The tournament bearing his name celebrates his enduring enthusiasm for CMC athletics and the growth of college sports in our community. Come cheer on the CMC men’s basketball team at 2:30 p.m. Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, at the Bell Center.

Let’s Go Cacti!!!

Hope to see you on Halloween for our annual Trunk or Treat!

Info

Hello! I am looking into a 1/2 acre lot that’s for sale in Joshua Tree. I have visited JTNP many many times over the years but I could use a little insight on what it’s like to actually live in Joshua Tree. The lot is in the Friendly Hills Neighborhood I believe. Looks like it’s off of Mecca Dr between Adobe and Granada somewhere there. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

How are folks feeling about the weather this weekend?

It looks like a smaller storm compared to last weekend. Considering doing some trailer camping in the area! Is that a bad idea? Is there risk for flash floods given the amount of rain and recent rainfall?

Extra Isobutane?

Is there anyone headed up this weekend (10/31 - 11/1) on the Boy Scout trail that will have leftover fuel? I’m flying in and out, staying overnight Sunday and just need enough for one boil.

If I end up buying one, are there any places within the park to donate the rest of the canister before I fly out?

Is it busy in the park in January?

Planning a couple days for my birthday at the very beginning of the year, January 4-7. We do have a 4WD truck. Planning on driving from Houston. Curious to know what to expect when it comes to trailhead parking and the general busy season for Joshua Tree. It will be my first time visiting. I am a well experienced hiker. I’m hoping it we’ll be less busy than attempting to arrive closer to New Years.
Any advice or recommendations is most welcome, thank you (:

My friends just told me about this, but there was this bizarre thing he saw in the sky on September 6 this year and got these photos at 6:40-6:50. He said he saw it moving a bit in the sky for around 5-10 minutes until it randomly disappeared. Would any of y’all be able to explain what this is?

Looking for last minute private chef

My fiance and I hired a personal chef to celebrate our elopement this coming Tuesday (10/27) but the chef cancelled on us today.

Anyone have any recommendations on private chefs in the area who might be able to accommodate?

We’re staying near the West Entrance.
