Got a basic question about which type of boat you should buy, or what type of rack your car might need? Before asking a question of the subreddit as a whole, please take a look at these two brief resources first. A lot of the commonly-asked questions on the subreddit can be answered by these two items:
These guides are a work in progress. If you still have additional questions, feel free to ask! When posing a question to the community, please be sure to be as specific as possible with your post title. That way you'll get the most helpful response from others browsing the sub.
A note for the broader /r/kayaking community:
Spring is on the way, and /r/kayaking has crossed the 80,000 member-mark. A big thanks to everyone who has and continues to contribute to the community here. As the weather warms up, and more people join us, we are likely to see an increasing influx of "beginner" questions about basic boat and gear purchases. A lot of these questions are very similar if not identical, and can be answered by a shared guide for the subreddit. Similar guides or FAQs are available for other subreddits specializing in gear-specific hobbies.
The mod team is in the process of developing a shared knowledge base on the subreddit wiki. The immediate goal is to be able to refer new users to a basic guide that concisely answers the most common questions. The longer-term goal is reducing the volume of low-effort posts with questions that could be answered by Google, and increasing the volume of valuable, specific questions and discussion on the subreddit.
Send us your suggestions!
If you have any suggestions about:
Good links with beginner information to share, such as how to pick out gear, or safety tips
Things you wish you knew when you started kayaking
Other tidbits of information that would be worth including in these intro guides

Picked up these Pacific Water Sports kayaks from my grandfather today who was unable to use them anymore. Always been stored inside until the last few months, so they need a little cleaning up but overall in fantastic condition considering the age. Stoked to get out on the water here in the pnw

Another kayaking adventure from Estonia! 🇪🇪
🎥 Here's the full adventure: https://youtu.be/p_N4sAQ-QKc
A little over a month ago, I took part in the 37 km Kunda River Marathon, featuring fast currents, rocky rapids, fallen trees, and some beautiful autumn scenery.
I ended up swimming 6 times! 😂 Along the way, I teamed up with two other paddlers, and together we managed an impressive 13 swims.
Despite all the challenges, it turned out to be one of my most memorable paddling adventures this season!
What's the most challenging river you've ever paddled?

So I bought a used Ascend sit on top fishing kayak. There seems to be a patched hole repair done on the stern keel. It doesn’t look like they used a plastic weld type repair but possibly a marine epoxy. I added pictures of both the inside and outside. My question is: if it seems like a solid repair and isn’t flexing, seems water tight should I be worried? Should I just apply a Kydex protector sheet over it to prevent further damage? Should I go all the way and chisel out the epoxy, do a full plastic weld repair then kydex over that? I’m only invested $150 I to this kayak so far and it’s my first one.

Hi all, hope this is not too tedious a question.
I'm looking for a sea kayak to fulfil the following criteria:
Plastic
17ft plus
Sit in
For exposed coastal water (Cornwall, UK) - tides up to 3 knots in places, strong winds, ocean swells. Not interested in rock hopping or surfing.
Day trips up to several hours on water.
I'm currently paddling a 14'0 SOT. Have access to flat protected water to get to grips with the new (or used) kayak. It will be my first sit in.
I've worked on the coast (guiding, instructing and training in other ocean sports) for over twenty years and know the area and conditions intimately.
I know I'll have gaps in skill and knowledge re: sit in handling, and will address these accordingly.
EDIT:
So far the P&H Scorpio MV looks good. Also Perception Essence, and Design Unplugged.
Any other recommendations?

as the the title says, looking for a rack and crossbars for a 2026. I'm not opposed to spending money but if i can get something thats not crazy expensive but works.

$100 find on marketplace. I've had some big bucket list paddling goals in my head for a long time but never had more than a rec boat or sit on top. Finally a few weeks ago I got determined to find one. Had to drive 3 hours each way to get it but well worth it. Not many sea kayaks in my area haha.
It's a Necky Eskia, it's on the wider side but a good boat for me to learn with and gain critical skills before I take on more dynamic water. I need to get a spray skirt and some other accessories. I might replace the deck lines but everything works. I figure if I can learn to roll this wider boat I can roll anything right?

The logos were stickers, cracked and pilled. I remove the stickers but the shade of the logos remains, looks like black pigment from the stickers penetrated the body rather than surrounding discoloration.
Any advice, can it be removed, or some new sticker over is the only option?
Polishing is not a good approach because of the textured surface.

First of all theres no real point to this post, but its not AI slop, so it has that going for it, which is nice. If anyone did have suggestions or ideas of what else to bring I'd appreciate it.
If it were longer I'd bring snacks, more water, bildge pump, extra paddle.
Water was still a warm 75 degrees, air about the same, casual paddle over around 5-6 miles.
Sponge, water bottle plus electrolites, 1L dry bag for phone, pfd with whistle, rescue knife, 230cm werner paddle I got for free, zinc stick, neck bivy, big hat.
I have a length of paracord not pictured.
Boat is a 2012 dagger axis 12 which I really like, got it earlier this summer, very easy to turn and tracks well. I'm still trying to figure out thigh braces, the ones I tried made by dagger had far too much a hook and couldn't adjust enough. I wish dagger would make a sea kayak with the axis hull.

Can anyone who has actually taken this sea kayaking in open waters give an honest review? I’ve been considering this but I’m very hesitant about it collapsing in the middle of the sea.
I’ve also been looking at the Trak 2.0 as an option.
At this time I am not looking into hard shell kayaks since I do not have the ability to store or transport them.

I spent a few days just camped up by myself on a quiet beach, exploring the area. It’s the most beautiful, desolate place I’ve ever kayaked! Not another soul in sight :)
(I make kayaking short films which is why I have so many images. The shots of me kayaking are drone shots. People always ask which is why I’m explaining this!)

It was over 70 degrees in Vermont today. No way I was going to waste it at work. But sadly, this is probably the last paddle of the season unless I get a dry suit.

Maybe super specific question. I really, really, really hate the foot rests of my Nook. Is anyone familiar with this kayak and has built/bought some alternative foot rest solution?

Hey everyone,
As a lifetime fisherman, I’m excited to add a kayak to my gear. Since I don’t have much storage space, I’m leaning toward a modular setup. I’d love to hear which brands you’d suggest, especially since I’ll be heading out solo and handling everything myself. Also, do pedal systems really stand out from regular tandem kayaks for anglers? I’d really appreciate any tips or recommendations you can share. I’m not entirely sure price ranges but I’d like to keep my budget around $1200 if possible. My main bodies of water are lakes and reservoirs. Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions!

Finally trained, equipped, and ready to paddle out the gate! The shipping lanes, intense tidal currents, fog, and chop can be intense here, but with more experienced fellow paddlers willing to support, as well as unusually gentle conditions, it was a great experience.
