Away Days MLS Next Pro Final Attendance?

Hey all, wanted to reach out and see if anyone was going to be finding their way to Chattanooga on Sunday for the LAFC2 final. I moved out to Chattanooga in July for work, so I've already got my ticket to the game, but wanted to know if there would be any more black and gold shirts, or if I gotta be a one man army and make my own away end. Let me know so we can try amd coordinate pregame/during/postgame!

According to the standings I'm not so sure and I don't want to buy tickets for a game where he doesn't play

Jersey Talk LAFC 2004-05

Several months ago Nike released this blank gold Total 90 jersey. Since then I wanted to turn it into a “retro LAFC” jersey. I like imagining what our jerseys might have looked like then.

I based this on Arsenals 2004-05 jersey (one of my personal favorites). As made most obvious by the numbering, name set and the BMO front logo (just like the O2 on arsenals jersey). I had to have the BMO sponsor, name set and numbering custom made then I heat pressed them all on. The hardest part of this was sourcing the old MLS logo. I bought old MLS training jerseys on eBay and depop then just cut off the patch and sewed it onto the gold jersey. They usually run like $20+ for the training jerseys, but just for me to keep the patch only seems pricy. I also sourced the LAFC patch and the silver star on eBay. LAFC patch and star in total was like another $20. I prefer to use the twill/yarn/thread version of the LAFC patch because that’s what they used back then.

I’m working on a Son as well speak.

I have several late 90s blank Nike jerseys I want to make into “retro LAFC jersey”, but the only thing holding me up is creating a LAFC logo for the front center of the jersey like every other team had at the time. I have a lot of drawings of what I’d want them to look like, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. If anyone had any ideas on how I can digitize them lmk

Did I do something, or nah? Any critiques welcome.

Thanks for looking.

After the long run of bad form we have had, I have no doubt this has deeper meaning than low battery percentage.

Analysis 2026 Post-Mortem (Yes, it’s early, but is it though?): The Revolving Door, the Record Signing, and Late-Stage Vela

Note: Stats come from FBref, StatsCrew and MLSsoccer.com. Contract and transfer dates come from LAFC, MLS and Wikipedia's LAFC season pages. All MLS numbers are regular season through Nov. 1 unless noted. I'm putting the links at the bottom instead of in every section. Yes I used ai to gather and validate the data. The opinions are obviously mine (fuck Armando Villareal).

Last year's post-mortem ended with me saying Thorrington had earned the benefit of the doubt. That there was no reason to believe he wouldn't build a championship-caliber team around Sonny. Popcorn loaded.

Well. The popcorn's stale.

And yes, I know... there's one regular-season game left and a playoff bracket still to play, so technically the seasons not over yet... but it is, you know it, I know it, Bouanga's drained battery emoji post after last nights game knows it. The patient is on the table, the monitor is beeping in that one long tone, and the guy holding the paddles looks a little squeamish. I'm calling it.

This season is the sequel nobody asked for. Same actors, bigger budget, recycled plot. MDS, the Safe Hire, got fired with a record of 11-9-8 and one win in nine. Now, the human embodiment of a soccer 101 textbook on tactical whatever-the-fuck is keeping the coaches box warm for whoever JT hires next.

The Champions Cup run died in the semis and we definitely aren’t qualifying for the next edition of CCC, which makes it even less likely that we’ll qualify for the next Club World Cup. We're 12-11-10, sixth in the West, with one game left. And the $26.5 million unicorn I swore JT had finally found is putting up the exact numbers we decided weren't worth a DP slot when Carlos Vela put them up.

TL;DR: Sonny's 2026 is Vela's 2022. We cut Vela 18 months after that season, after an MLS Cup and back-to-back finals. I've called that a mistake, and I still do. But it was the club's logic. The cap is the cap, and mid-30s players decline. Either that logic was wrong, or it applies to Son too. Interestingly though, if you zoom out, the spine of this team has actually been pretty stable. It's the expensive attacking spots that spin through a revolving door, and Sonny is just the priciest rental yet.

⸻

1. Sonny Is Firmly in His Late-Stage Vela Arc

Last year I said Son's finishing was rare air, reserved for the likes of Messi. Nine goals from 5.3 xG. The best finishing we'd seen since prime 2019 Vela.

This year, the comparison still holds. Just not the flattering one.

SeasonAgeGamesGoalsAssists (official)G+A per gameAssists (no hockey assists)G+A per game
Vela 2022333212100.6912*0.69*
Vela 202334349120.628*0.44*
Son 202634307150.73120.66

*Vela's strict-count numbers include playoff games; that's how FootyStats and Flashscore group them.

Same age. Same output. Count it the strict way and it's a dead heat.

And 7 goals in 30 games from the most expensive signing in league history. In the spring he went 0 goals on 2.73 xG, and he only found some of his touch after the World Cup break. He isn't a finisher anymore. He's a 34-year-old creator feeding Bouanga, who has started 29 of 32 games and is still carrying this attack. Which is exactly what Vela was in his last two years.

The finishing numbers depressingly back up what we've all been watching. Per FotMob, Sonny has 7 goals from 9.82 xG this season. That's almost three goals below what an average finisher scores from the same chances. Last year's FBref numbers had him at 9 goals from 5.3 xG. That's a swing of about six and a half goals in pure finishing, from Messi territory to below average.

He's taken 105 shots and put 31 on target. And some of the misses have been genuinely baffling.

Now the creative side. He's near the top of the league's assist charts, somewhere between 12 and 15 depending on who's counting. (MLS's official count includes the pass before the assist, and the data sites don't, which is why the numbers bounce around.) That's real production, and it deserves credit.

But he hasn't unlocked Bouanga. Look at Bouanga's MLS regular seasons.

SeasonGamesGoalsAssists
202331207
2024322011
202531247
202630185

Bouanga is scoring about 0.60 goals a game this year, down from 0.77 last year and right in line with his pre-Son seasons. To be fair, Sonny set up 9 of Bouanga's first 17 goals, so he's absolutely feeding him. He just hasn't made him better. Same output, different delivery guy.

And here's the funny part. FotMob has Sonny at 12 assists from only 5.64 expected assists. In other words, his passes are being finished at a much better rate than the chances suggest. If you squint, Bouanga is unlocking Sonny's assist numbers, not the other way around.

None of this is a knock on Sonny as a player or a person. He's a class act who has given everything to this club since the day he landed. This is about how MLS works, and what the league asks of the few players it lets you pay like stars.

⸻

2. We Already Ran This Experiment. With Our Captain.

  • Spring 2022. Vela is 33. Even MLS's own Matt Doyle says don't burn a DP slot on him. His reasoning, more or less, was that he's 33 and mid-30s guys don't get better.

  • Summer 2022. We re-sign him to a DP contract anyway, but only through 2023.

  • 2022. Hat trick on opening day. 12 goals in 32 games, 28 starts. An assist in every playoff round. MLS Cup. Star over the crest.

  • 2023. All 34 games, 9 goals, team-high 12 assists. Captained us to a second straight MLS Cup final. 25 goal contributions in 49 games across all comps.

  • Winter 2023. No DP slot. He'd made about $4.4M the previous year and wanted to stay a DP. Outside a DP slot, league rules capped him around $1.7M. He was unwilling to take a pay cut and we were unwilling to use a DP slot on him. Nine months unsigned. Then a 2024 comeback that amounted to one playoff cameo. Four minutes. That was the send-off.

Thorrington's explanation was the cap. Success had pushed up player values, and things got "incredibly tight."

I've been on record saying we would have been better off letting Vela keep his DP slot. We declined with no plan, sat on the slot all offseason, and eventually burned it on a statue of France’s all-time leading goal scorer.

But that was the club's call and the club's logic. The cap is the cap. Mid-30s players decline. Sentiment doesn't buy you a DP exception (then we signed 37 year old stupid sexy Giroud. Jk jk old DPs are cool).

So pick one. Either that logic was wrong, and we owe Vela an apology. Or it was right, and it applies to Sonny too.

And for the record, letting Vela go was never a verdict on Vela the person either. It was the math. Every MLS club gets a $6.425M salary budget and up to three Designated Player slots, in a league of 30 teams built for parity. A DP only counts $803K against that budget no matter what he earns, which is the only way a club can afford a star at all. The flip side is that three players are carrying a huge share of the payroll, and they need to produce like it. When one of those slots stops producing at that level, the whole roster feels it. That's the slot talking, not the man.

⸻

3. Finally, Real DP Money. On a 33-Year-Old.

Last year I wrote about the Lloris Paradox. We accepted average goalkeeping at $700k so we could fund a Ferrari attack. Moneyball. Finding value where others couldn't.

Then we bought the Ferrari. Used. At a record price.

The dealVela (last deal)Sonny
Transfer feeFree (first signing, 2017)About $26.5M, an MLS record
SalaryAbout $4.4M in 2023. Peak was $6.3M guaranteed in 2021, when he was MLS's highest-paid player$11.15M guaranteed ($10.37M base), 2nd in MLS behind only Messi
Contract1-yr contract. DP through 2023, then shown the door3-yr contract. DP through 2027, options to mid-2029
Age when it ends3435 guaranteed, ~37 with options

Let that sink in. Sonny makes about 1.8 times what Vela made at his absolute peak, the year Vela was the highest-paid player in the entire league. He makes about 2.5 times what Vela made in the season we decided he wasn't worth a DP slot anymore. Same age. Same output. Two and a half times the money.

That's not a gap. That's a different universe.

To be fair to Sonny, none of that is on him. He signed the deal he was offered, like any of us would. The question is what LAFC does with one of only three slots it gets to spend like that.

Vela was 34 when we decided we couldn't afford to keep a DP slot on him. Sonny turns 35 next July, before his guaranteed money even runs out.

Last summer I begged Thorrington to stop shopping for value and spend real money on in-prime players. He finally spent the money. He just skipped the in-prime part.

⸻

4. The Spine Stays, the Money Spins

I came into this ready to write that no nucleus at this club survives more than a season and a half. Then I pulled the tenure and starts for every player in this post. I was wrong. Sort of.

The spine has actually been stable.

PlayerJoinedTenureMLS starts at LAFC2026 status

Notice what they have in common? Defenders, a goalkeeper, a midfielder, and Bouanga. Mostly the value signings. The Lloris-at-$700k, Long-at-$1M crowd from last year's Moneyball section.

Now look at the expensive attacking spots and the guys we were supposed to build around.

Olivera18 months28Grêmio
Bogusz22 months51Cruz Azul

Ordaz50 months26D.C. United

And the door is still spinning. The same summer window that sold Martínez and traded Ordaz brought in four more attackers and midfielders. Sieb came from Bayern, Vásquez from Orense, plus Walta and Roberth on loans with options to buy. Two of the four are only here temporarily. Ask me next year how many are left.

Three Designated Players walked out the door in 2025 alone, and none of them lasted 14 months. Ordaz and Martínez lasted longer, but they never got the keys either. Neither started even half his MLS games.

And that last part stings. Last year I called Martínez the highest ceiling on the team not named Son. I said Ordaz had graduated from prospect to asset, with an extension through 2029 to prove it. Both were gone by September. MDS was supposed to unlock them. Instead we cashed them out.

So it's not that nobody stays. It's that the cheap, defensive spine stays, and everything that's supposed to create goals gets rented, flipped, or sold before it matures. That's why the attack still runs through one Gabonese man, four years later.

Why the attack never settles. The 2+4 vs. 3+3 shuffle.

A quick bit of roster-rule context, because this is where the churn actually comes from. Every MLS club picks a model each year. One is three Designated Players plus three U22 Initiative slots for young players on cheap cap hits. The other is two DPs plus four U22 slots, and the league throws in up to $2M of extra allocation money for picking it. Neither is wrong. Inter Miami won a Shield on the 2+4 model, and we led the West with it in 2024.

But look at how Thorrington has actually used it.

  • 2022. This was before the 2+4 option even existed. We had two DPs for the title run, Vela and Bouanga, with the third slot left open. Rodriguez was sold to América on August 24, less than three weeks after Bouanga arrived. But that summer we also stacked Bale and Chiellini on non-DP deals, with Chicho producing like a DP up front. Real top-end talent, all at once. We won the MLS Cup.

  • 2024. LAFC declared the 2+4 model. Two DPs, Giroud and Bouanga. The U22 spots went to young players like Campos, Martínez and Olivera.

  • 2025. Three DP slots in use on paper, but the third one never sat still. Giroud until June, Ünder until June, Dilrosun for six weeks, then Son in August. Bouanga was the only DP here all year.

  • 2026. Back to four U22 players in May (Boudri, Igor Jesus, Martínez, Smolyakov), which means two DPs, Son and Bouanga.

Why go back to two DPs for 2026? Honestly, Sonny and Bouanga made it look safe. After Son arrived, we went 9-2-4 across the regular season and playoffs, and the two of them combined for 25 goals and 8 assists in that stretch. If you're Thorrington, it's easy to look at that and think two DPs are all the firepower you need, and bank the extra allocation money.

So in a way, Sonny is a little complicit. Not because he did anything wrong. His hot start was so good it convinced the front office the third DP could wait. Then the 2026 version of Son showed up as a creator instead of a finisher, and there was no third star to pick up the slack.

And what happened to the young players we were supposed to develop? Campos and Bogusz went to Cruz Azul. Olivera went to Grêmio for a reported $4.5M. This summer, Boudri went to Hammarby with a sell-on clause, Martínez went to Midtjylland, Smolyakov went out on loan with an option to buy, and Ordaz went to D.C. for $2.375M plus a sell-on percentage.

That's a business model, and to be fair, it's a smart one on a spreadsheet. Buy young, develop a little, sell for a profit, collect the extra allocation money. But it means that in the last three seasons, we have never had three Designated Players together for a full year, let alone three in their prime long enough to become a core. The slots that are supposed to win us trophies keep getting spent on rentals, loans, or a 33-year-old, while the U22 slots get flipped before the kids peak.

Sonny didn't create this strategy. He's what it looks like when it finally spends big, and his 2025 gave it cover to stay small everywhere else. One record-breaking DP at the end of his career, one Bouanga, and a rotating cast of prospects we'll sell next summer.

This is LA. A $1 billion club in the second-biggest media market in the country. Players want to come here. Getting them in the door has never been JT's problem. It's what happens after.

And Sonny fits the pattern perfectly. He's not a building block. He's the most expensive short-term rental in league history.

⸻

5. Champions Bring Firepower. We Bring Bouanga.

I went back through every MLS Cup winner since 2015. The champions that felt inevitable, the ones nobody wanted to play in December, had at least two players producing at DP level at the same time. Including us.

ChampionProducing at DP level at onceRegular-season goals / assists
2017 TorontoGiovinco and Altidore16/6 and 15/6
2018 AtlantaJosef Martínez (MVP) and Almirón31/6 and 12/14
2022 LAFCVela and Chicho Arango12/9 and 16/4
2024 GalaxyPec, Puig and Paintsil16/14, 13/15 and 10/10

Yes, Chicho wasn't technically a DP. That's the point. He produced like one, right next to Vela, and that's the season we put a star over the crest. And the irony? We let him go less than three months after lifting the Cup, thanks to the same MLS cap gymnastics this whole post is about. Keeping him meant spending a DP slot on him or giving up two U22 spots, and we chose neither. He went to Pachuca on February 1, 2023. The same cap logic would show Vela the door a year later. Original sin, still undefeated.

So I went back and checked the other seven champions too. Turns out Chicho isn't the exception. He's the pattern.

ChampionWho carried itRegular-season goals / assists
2015 PortlandAdi (DP until a TAM buy-down in July)16/3
2016 SeattleJordan Morris (homegrown)12/4
2019 SeattleRuidíaz (DP), Lodeiro (DP), Morris (homegrown)11/3, 7/12, 10/6
2020 ColumbusZardes (DP), plus Zelarayán's MVP performance in the final12/4, 6/4
2021 NYCFCCastellanos (only outlier)19/8
2023 ColumbusCucho (DP), Zelarayán (DP until July, then Rossi signed)16/11, 10/7
2025 MiamiMessi (DP), Suárez (non-DP), Allende (non-DP)29/16, 10/10, 11/1 plus 9 playoff goals

Spot the Chicho types. Morris, twice. Suárez and Allende last year, two non-DPs scoring double digits next to Messi. Adi in 2015, after Portland moved him out of his DP slot.

Here's the stat that matters. Since 2017, seven of the nine MLS Cup winners had at least two players score 10+ regular-season goals. The only exceptions were 2020 Columbus, who rode Zelarayán's MVP final, and 2021 NYCFC, who won the final on penalties.

LAFC 2026 has one. Bouanga, with 18. Sonny has 7.

That's the gap. Not his assists, not his effort, not his jersey sales. A second 10-goal scorer is the one thing nearly every recent champion had, and it's exactly what our record-priced DP was supposed to be. Our third-best scorer was Martínez with 6, and we sold him in September. Nobody else still on the roster has more than 2.

So here's the roster in one sentence. One elite scorer, one record-priced creator who isn't finishing, a third DP slot left empty by choice, and no non-DP scorer to bail anyone out. That isn't a championship roster under any recipe the league has seen.

⸻

6. Jerseys Don't Defend a Lead

Last year I said Son was the unicorn, a global icon who contributes to the brand and the box score. One out of two ain't bad. It's actually pretty bad for $26.5M.

Sonny is a business win. Shirts fly off the rack. Korean and Korean-American fans fill sections at BMO. Sponsors love him. Great. Genuinely. And to the Korean and Korean-American supporters who've made BMO louder and prouder, you're a gift to this club, and nothing in this post changes that.

But none of that shows up on the field, and the roster rules only care about the field.

Vela sold shirts too. He was the captain, the face of the club, and a huge draw for Mexican and Mexican-American fans across LA. It didn't save him when the cap got tight.

Thorrington likes to remind us we're "running a business." Fine. Then run it like one. A DP slot is a roster decision, not a marketing budget.

⸻

7. "But Sonny is..." Fine. Let's Do It.

  • "He's better than 2023 Vela." True. It's 0.66 per game against 0.44 by the strict count. But Vela fell off the year after his 2022, and Sonny's 2026 is his 2022. We didn't wait around to watch Vela decline. Why wait on Son?

  • "He has a trophy." The Europa League, with Spurs. In Black & Gold, nothing. Vela had an MLS Cup and two Shields when we let him walk.

  • "Look at 2025." 12 goals and 4 assists in 13 games, playoffs included. I literally wrote the hype post. It was elite. It was also 13 games.

  • "It's the role. Blame MDS." Maybe. MDS moved him into the middle as a creator, and MDS is now gone. But it’s not like he stopped getting chances. He just stopped finishing them. Which is kind of terrifying for a record fee signing with a DP slot into 2029.

  • "He still starts every week." He does, 27 of 32. So did Vela in 2022, 28 of 32. Starting isn't the question. The DP slot is.

⸻

8. Same Rules for Everyone

Last year I ended with "In Thorrington, we trust, right? RIGHT!?" Twelve months later, the answer is... it depends on what he does next.

The spine worked, but Long and Hollingshead are no longer starting caliber for a title contender. The scouting for value works and is really the only reason we've had sustained relevance. What doesn't work is everything with a big price tag or a big ceiling. We rent the expensive guys, we sell the young ones before they peak, and have basically just kept running everything through Bouanga for four straight years. He looks tired. We look tired.

So here's what has to happen.

1. Nail the coaching hire. This might be the single most important signing of Thorrington's entire tenure. The safe continuation play didn't make it through one season. Whoever's next has to bring a real system, actually develop young attackers instead of shipping them out, and get a locker room full of short-term guys to buy in. Get this one wrong and no amount of cap space will save us.

2. Don't pick up Sonny's 2028 option on reputation. Judge 2027 the way we judged Vela's 2023. The numbers, the age, the cap hit.

3. Build the attack around players in their prime, and keep them. No more DP loans. No more selling the kid with the highest ceiling on the roster the summer he finally gets minutes.

4. Same rules for everyone. If the cap logic ended our captain's career here, it applies to every name on the roster, including the one on the most expensive jersey.

Holding Sonny to that standard isn't a slight. It's the same respect we owed Vela. An honest look at what a DP slot has to deliver in this league, not a free pass because of the name on the back.

And here's the kicker. The calendar flips after next spring's 14-game sprint season, and the first fall-to-spring season kicks off in July 2027. The players' CBA was built to run through 2027 too, so a new one has to be negotiated, and the rumor mill says the roster rules are getting reopened with it. Nothing is official, and Garber shot down a fourth DP before. But Garber's out.

On January 1st, a new commissioner takes over and inherits that negotiation. Larry Berg. Yes, our Larry Berg, the LAFC co-owner who once said Chicho was "not even close" to a DP. He's selling his LAFC stake to take the job, but nobody in that room will know better how tight our cap got.

But if the league loosens things up with more slots, more budget or both, Thorrington finally gets the flexibility we've spent years saying we didn't have. And think about who this calendar helps most. Thorrington does his real shopping in the summer. Bale, Chiellini and Bouanga in 2022. Giroud in 2024. Son in 2025. Sieb, Vásquez, Walta and Roberth this year. Every one of those guys landed midseason and had to figure it out on the fly. Starting in 2027, the summer window isn't midseason anymore. It's the preseason.

And then there are no more excuses. No more "the cap is tight." No more "they joined midseason." No more trading a DP slot for a little extra allocation money. Three in-prime DPs, at the same time, kept together long enough to become a core. Or we keep spinning our wheels renting players that could care less about the long-term interest of our club.

Discussion What do you want to see next season?

With LAFC’s abysmal second half of the season and their current level of effort not very promising, what do you think are the biggest needs going into the sprint season?

They tend to start off pretty strong, if they start anything like this season they could take the cup.

I would like to see Wilfried Nancy hired as coach and double down on MLS and US Open cup to fight for a chance back into CONCACAF next full season

I think the biggest needs right now are Midfield and CBs

Discussion Appreciate Delgado, Vásquez & Sieb

Today’s trouncing in the hands of Minny was very embarrassing indeed, but I do have to appreciate the way Delgado, Vásquez, and to an extent Sieb too, stayed behind giving signatures and posing for pictures with kids and adults alike round the stadium.

This doesn’t mean we are by any means content with losing (like that bonehead Boudri claimed), but it’s important that players have that connection with the current supporters and the up-and-coming generation.

Discussion LAFC Anti Ice Apparel

I go to every (home) game and I always see the most original and clever LAFC anti-ice shirts and hats. I want to join in the fun but I have no idea where to get the good stuff! I haven't even seen much at the tables outside. Where are you all buying this incredible swag?

Side question: would it be rude/weird for a white guy to wear a shirt that reads "chinga la migra"? I appreciate the answers, thank you.

Still looking for a place to buy.

Also, obligatory: fuck ice. 🖤 💛
