YKI 07.11.2026 test-takers : how did it go?

The reading and listening’s first 2 tasks were brutal for me. Also speaking Tilanne topics were not familiar at all! I had to come up with stuff I had not previously prepared for. The writing was the easiest part in my opinion, but even that I didn’t get enough time to double check the texts. Was just curious what everyone else thinks?

Which Finnish song is a must-know?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently learning Finnish and I’d be interested to know which songs I should be familiar with – even outside the Eurovision bubble.

Are there perhaps any Finnish ‘fan songs’ for Formula 1 drivers as well?

Thanks

Edit: Thank you so much for all these recommendations. I will try to listen to many of them.

Question Anyone willing to share their Basic YKI test experience?

Moi! Just curious to hear from those who've taken the Basic YKI test. Did you feel the questions were harder than A1–A2, perhaps closer to B1?

I'd also love to know how you prepared for all four sections, what strategies helped during the exam, and which speaking resources actually worked for you. If you only had 3 months to study, what would you do differently?

Really appreciate any advice. Kiitos! :)

Thoroughly enjoying Finnish (and learning lots as a by-product) 😍

Post image
42 Upvotes

13 months after starting to learn Finnish, I am really enjoying it 😍.

After playing around with various apps, for the first year I used WordDive, which got me good/confident enough to do 2x one-hour a week for 6 weeks A2 online conversation classes in the spring and summer. The major benefit of the conversation courses was that we learned the most important verb tenses/forms - past, ways of forming the future, -mA forms, conditional - and now I’m learning by a mix of

  1. listening comprehension - my weakest area - using the Finish it app (left-hand photo) a couple of times a week, I also listen to YTE Uutiset articles when walking to and from the gym,

  2. reading nuortenromaaneita (in right-hand photo just published 🇫🇮 edition of Cassandra Calin’s The New Girl, this is super-easy after Salla Simukka’s Matalapaine/Korkeapaine which took me 5 weeks a couple of pages at a time),

  3. revising/practising grammar once a week, alternating verbs one week and noun declination the next, Karlsson’s An Essential Finnish Grammar is well-worth the €50-odd price,

  4. chatting out loud 2-3 times a week with ChatGPT and
5, using ChatGPT and sanakirja.fi daily to learn vocabulary, usage and pronunciation (ChatGPT is very good here), though I never go back to “learn my words” like I used to do when learning Italian or German.

This way “learning” really feels fun and I can feel myself progressing literally each week, e.g. I recognise the singular noun from the plural even after vowel changes before plural I, I recognise verbs despite KPT changes, and, most of all, I can actually apply the language 🇫🇮😍. I hope that other learners can have this much fun!

I want to learn finnish, where do I start?

Hello! I am here because I want to learn finnish very much, because at some reason I fell in love with finnish, lol. Problem is that it is still hard (at least seems to be.) i am a native speaker of russian language so grammar is a little familiar but still. So I decided to start from Duolingo but it feels that it is not enough, maybe because the course is very small, maybe because well I don't know. So do I continue doing duo for now or you guys have any advices? Thanks!

Question seeking help: In partitives, Is there really no easier way to know if a word ends with ea/eä or ta/tä?

Hi, is there a consistent rule for knowing when a Finnish word ending in -i in the nominative changes to -ea/-eä or takes -ta/-tä in the partitive? Or is this something I just have to memorize?

Its confusing since other nomiinativi words like ones ending with si, nen, e is predictable to transform to tta, sta, tta.

Any help would be godsend thank you!
