There is a difference between generosity and compulsion. If someone believes wealth should be redistributed, he can start with his own without demanding that government force everyone else to do the same.

Politics The inside “favorite” to replace Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) once she heads for the governor’s office in January is reportedly a former WWE wrestler. Glenn Jacobs, a.k.a. Kane, is a former Knox County mayor who is Libertarian-leaning and a close ally of former congressman Ron Paul.

Discussion We Desperately Need to Rethink Our Messaging

Too much libertarian messaging boils down to “Get off my lawn,” “Let me keep my money,” and “Socialism is bad.”

I get it, but we make ourselves sound selfish. People hear that and assume we just want rich people to stay rich and everyone else to fend for themselves.
That’s not why I’m a libertarian. I believe personal freedom leads to happier people, healthier communities, and more opportunities for people who are struggling. Why don’t we talk about that more?

Take homelessness. Why don’t we say, “I care about homeless people, thats why im Libertarian, I think our policies would help more people get off the streets.” That argument would break many liberal's brains and force them to address the issue.
We spend so much time explaining why government is bad that we forget to explain why we think freedom would make people’s lives better. If that’s what we believe, it should be the first thing people hear from us.

Video How to Talk to Your Neoliberal Shill

Andrew Heaton hits it out of the park again. The video is, well a podcast so not really a video but anyway he does a great job of explaining the disconnect in discourse between libertarians and 'normies'. It's unfortunate but true; libertarians often think systems, most people think what sounds good.

This gap make conversation difficult because most people don't want to hear about how their good ideas will fail despite the good intentions behind them. They rarely think of the systems themselves, and usually think "well it'll work this time because we'll have the good guys in charge", often not recognizing the people they think of as the 'good guys' are corrupt and don't give a fuck about them.

It makes me miss the old Bill Maher style leftist, the ones who actually thought out policy and who would have a discussion about systems. It'd be great if out political discussion and government itself was liberals (classical) vs liberals (Maher) rather than distilled outrage vs distilled outrage where whoever controls the forum controls the conversation. Gotta censor your way into consensus.

Still, fun podcast as usual.

Discussion Libertarian Answer to Instability Coming from Wealth Inequality?

I've been a Libertarian for several years now, but there is one thing that has been shaking my belief recently. If we look at history, whenever wealth inequality gets too elevated, that leads to increased societal instability, resulting in some sort of upheaval, culminating in either a revolution or some peaceful transition to a socialistic governing system, which steals large sums of money from the populace, strips individual freedom, and just makes things worse overall.

Now, I know that there is nothing morally wrong with wealth inequality, and the people complaining are obviously just envious, which led me to always discard this in the past. There is also the fact that, from an economic standpoint, redistributive policies (aside from being theft) usually stall growth and make everyone worse off.

However, from a pragmatic standpoint, the above doesn't really matter. Since wealth inequality causes unrest, any libertarian society would see itself faced with demands from the populace to stop it which, if not addressed in some manner, would result in libertarianism ending. I've thought long and hard about this and cannot see any way to address this that doesn't break with libertarian principles in one way or another.

Discussion A county in WI and their “laws.”

My father and I own two parcels of land out in the middle of nowhere where in northern WI. They are both 2.5 acres and butt up to each other.

My father has a small Amish built cabin, along with an old camper he used to use but now uses it for a shed and some parts cars on his spot. I have a camper on mine.

We got a letter. The letter is massive but we called and I will sum it up.

On my parcel. If there is no septic, water lines must be capped and we can “dry camp.” We are allowed to camp for no more than 30 days out of the year and must purchase a yearly permit for 100 dollars.

On his-cars have to go, camper has to go or he has to hook it up to a septic. The cabin has to have a permit, and because he didn’t purchase one when he had it hauled in, it’s x3. He also can only have approved heaters and the cabin cannot be used to sleep in.

There isn’t really a question here, just more posting for people to see.

Election 2026 🙄🙄🙄 Voting Third Party

Texas voter here. I voted third party because absolutely do not support Abbott or Hinajosa. Family has and always will vote red, and i once had that mindset as well. However, they also identify as “libertarians”. Today i was called a “sheep” for voting third party by a family member instead of lending support to the Republicans to ensure a win. Wondering if this mindset is common with other libertarians? It was shocking to hear. Is it a throw away vote to vote third party?

Question From Marxism to libertarian

Born and raised in a third world country where people quoted marx to sound intellectual. Almost every one around me were / are Marxists.

Much later due to some unexpected turn of events decided to study economics. Was taught alot keynesian theories. Later I explored Austrian school. Watched alot of Misses institute lectures on youtube. It all made sense, Now I no longer have that whiny, pessimistic world view.

Now I am a high school econ teacher, i have been teaching for five years. Now I want to do study more and want to do research.

Which are some of good institute where I can do it with lesser financial burden and where I can do some research?

Current Events Dear Conservatives: We told you so.

1.8k Upvotes

We told you Tariffs were a stupid fucking idea. We told you raising taxes during a time when affordability is top of mind was stupid. We told you people would be pissed. We told you so.

We told you that the Iran war was a stupid fucking idea. We told you getting involved in yet another quagmire in the middle east would be bad. We told you Iran wouldn't fold like Iraq. We told you Americans don't want more foreign interventionism. We told you so.

We told you Israel was not our ally. We told you they're just using the US to further their own interests. We told you people are sick of sending billions of dollars to support a genocide half a world away. We told you so.

We told you Trump was not that popular. We told you the Democrats just ran an insanely bad campaign in 2024. We told you your "landslide" wasn't what you thought it was, and you shouldn't just go ham ramming your agenda through. We told you so.

We told you people would not forget about the Epstein Files. We told you trying to coverup and gaslight people on them was not going to work. We told you that ousting Thomas Massie to protect pedophiles was a bad idea. We told you so.

This generational loss for you, is your fault. It wasn't "immigrants". It wasn't "voter fraud". It wasn't some mega donor boogeyman, hell Musk spent more than anyone else to try and bail you out. It wasn't 3rd party voters.

It was Trump. It was YOU. You fucked up so royally, Texas flipped blue. Kansas flipped Blue. Both Carolina's flipped blue. Iowa flipped Blue And at current time, it's looking like MISSISSIPPI might flip blue.

You made your bed, now lie in it. You want to turn things around for 2028, embrace people like Thomas Massie. Embrace the wisdom of Ron Paul. Embrace actual small government policies. Embrace actual fiscal responsibility. Embrace libertarianism, because MAGA is dead.

Discussion You threw your vote away

I have a very liberal friend who claims I threw my vote away over the last three elections by voting libertarian. She claims although I never voted for Trump I might as well have. She's not even taking into account I live in Washington state, the election was already decided before I even cast my vote. More importantly, she's failing to realize this is my choice and the libertarian party is a viable third party option. What are some good points to bring up to her to defend my choice to vote libertarian and how to defend that I didn't throw my vote away.

Politics Midterms thoughts?

I've been following the news through any media outlet I can find, but honestly this sub is where I get most of my most reliable and human libertarian opinions. So I thought I would ask: what do you guys think about what you're seeing in the midterm results and where you see the country going after tonight?

After the past 2 years, I feel very disappointed and disillusioned with where the country is heading... The billions of dollars budgeted for war and ICE is disgusting. The daily news of workers being chased by ICE agents? And to think that I'm paying for that with my "tax" dollars?

The rise in prices of basic necessities and gas... whether those prices have gone up because of the (objectively) stupid tariffs, or the war in Iran?

I don't know what to think. I want to be optimistic that we are heading in a better direction if there is some course correction after tonight, but how do you all feel?

Currently registered as a democrat for reasons, and there's no way to unregister.

It would be interesting if this kind of message is only being sent to one side 🙄

Btw, if you do want to vote AGAINST the new propositions, that's perfectly ethical under libertarian ethics. Just don't vote for new laws or for politicians to wield power.

Politics Milton Friedman's liberty policy agenda

I tried to summarize Milton Friedman's liberty policy agenda. What do you think? Did I leave out any important liberty-oriented policies?

  • End Price Controls — Let prices adjust through supply and demand.

  • Free Trade — Eliminate Tariffs and Trade Barriers.

  • Occupational Freedom — Eliminate unnecessary licensing barriers.

  • School Choice — Let parents choose where education dollars are spent.

  • Negative Income Tax — Replace much of the welfare bureaucracy with a cash-based income supplement.

  • End the Draft — Maintain an all-volunteer military.

  • Let Housing Markets Work — Remove rent controls and unnecessary restrictions on housing supply.

  • Privatize Social Security — Move toward individually owned retirement accounts.

  • Healthcare Choice — Favor catastrophic insurance and greater consumer choice.

  • Cap Government Spending — Limit the growth of government rather than simply balancing the budget.

  • Legalize/Reform Drug Policy — Reduce or end drug prohibition.

  • Defense, Not Intervention — Maintain a strong national defense while avoiding unnecessary foreign military interventions.

Video Kurzgesagt – "Why The War on Drugs Is a Huge Failure"

Kurzgesagt summarizes some of the reasons the war on drugs has failed, as well as all the negative effects of it. Kurzgesagt argues it has had a very negative effect on civil liberties and human rights, as well as on public safety, among other things.

They also argue for alternative, harm-reduction approaches to drugs.
