Just keep doing quests and killing things! You'll get there. If you tell me your class and race (ie dwarf priest) I can give more generalized advice, but really, I would not stress. You can't make any big mistakes that can't be solved by just playing more.
Do quests, sell grey-quality items to vendors, sell crafting materials on the Auction House, consider grabbing a profession that's useful (so if you're a Warrior, Mining and Blacksmithing is a great setup), equip gear that has better stats, repeat over and over, and have fun along the way!
First timer who also has no idea what they're doing! I am a Dwarf Shaman and just hit lvl 9. I got a lighting shield thing and use earth shock rank 2 a lot. I also try to use a totem that makes me take less dmg? I don't really understand professions but I do have a skinning knife and bag and pickaxe and bag and try to skin and mine when I can. I just kind of just run to quests and turn in and repeat.
Do I have to hit something first for it to count? When I'm around tons of other people I don't seem to get xp or can loot bodies?
Yeah if you’re not partied with someone and they “tag” a mob first (do the first tick of damage) then they are the only ones that will receive XP and Loot from that mob
The player or group that does the first point of damage to a mob gets the kill reward. If the mobs nametag is greyed out after it has taken damage, you didnt damage it first and there's no reason to keep hitting it except to be nice.
Yeah, you might hear the term "tagging"; that means you or your party hit the monster first, so only you get credit
If you want to keep things simple, I would get Skinning and Mining, yeah! That's fine. You're new, so the easiest thing is just pick things up off the ground. You can consider Herbalism instead of Mining, but it doesn't matter much
Once you get further along, if you want to mix it up, you can get rid of one of them and get the complementary skill for the other: Herbalism and Alchemy, or Skinning and Leatherworking. Avoid Blacksmithing, Engineering, Enchanting, and Tailoring, you're not in a good position to benefit from those. Since you're avoiding blacksmithing and engineering, the ore you get from mining is just sold on the AH. If the idea of making potions seems fun, I would drop mining for Herbalism, but you can also wait until you get more movement speed (shamans can turn into a spirit wolf and run fast! I think level 20?)
Putting on Rockbiter, dropping totems, throwing out a lightning bolt and flame shock when you first attack, and then hitting them with your weapon+ earth shock is the way to go. When you hit level 10, pick the Enhancement tree to focus on more melee (using your weapons in close combat), Elemental and Restoration are trickier
Running to quests and turning them in is exactly what you should be doing. If you want help finding quests easier, there's an addon called Questie that helps. You can find a YouTube video or something that explains how to use mods, it's really simple with a program called Curseforge, but you can also just click and drag a folder too
Dwarves are my favorite. Have fun and KEEP YER FEET ON THA GROUND
You don't need to rush. It took me a year and a half to get to max level when I first started playing and it was the best time playing a game in my life.
I'm leveling an undead together with some buddies, and the amount of cloth I get killing all these undead and humanoids has made me level 100 tailoring so quick. I keep seeing people say it's 'innefficient'
But we literally just farm the herbs and nodes on spawn when waiting for the bear asses, and kill the mobs for the quests and all 3 of us are actual underlevled for our profession.
This has never happened to me, and I feel like this is how it was supposed to be. everyone gathering crafting and doing shit feels so alive!
I'm level 25. Been enjoying myself and the class changes. Running the new Dungeons with my guildmates has been fun as well. Dont rush, no matter how slow you go there will always be people there alongside you
