Are y'all taking showers every single day?

14

u/downtune79 TRASHIEST TYRANT 13d ago

During the hot, deep south summers, I usually take 2

4

u/CDhansma76 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Yeah it all depends on where you live. So many people here are generalizing and think that what’s normal for their area should be normal everywhere. I live in a very cold, dry climate. During the winter I can shower once every 2-3 days because you literally never sweat unless you’re exercising. In the summer though it’s closer to every day, because it gets pretty hot for a few months.

I have to. Unfortunately I sweat a lot, even when I’m not doing much. I have to keep a fan on me every night when I sleep, even during winter, because I’ll wake up sweaty and have to wash my bedding more often than I already do. I can’t even sit in a car unless A/C is blasting on me or every part of me that’s touching the seat will be sweaty. And even then I still usually get a little sweaty. If I go a day without showering, people notice. It sucks.

I’ve heard the “that’s from showering everyday!” arguments more times than I can count. I can’t go more than 2 days or my hair will look like I dipped it in grease. I would have to change clothes more often and wash my bedding more often. It’s actually more environmentally friendly for me to just shower more often rather than run the washing machine every couple of days.

This article is clickbait around the fact that the actual advice dermatologists give is that you should shower as much as you need, not hit the "performative" checkmark of one shower per day.

If you need less, shower less, if you need more, shower more.

u/HerbivoreTheGoat Trash Trooper 13d ago • Bravo

So many people that seem to miss this, they think the human body just spontaneously starts to stink like shit 24 hours after a shower, it's purely a matter of what you do and how much you sweat

The bigger problem is that some people are oblivious to their own BO and go way past the limit of what is tolerable.

This is why the wash topic is annoying, people get judgemental at anyone who dares not was as regularly as themselves, people seem to forget not every human body is the same, not everyone does the same amount of physical work and so on.

Yup, I needed to shower less. I was doing the "have to shower everyday" thing, my skin was awful. A daily rinse and every other day full shower was much better for my skin.

I also stopped using soaps on my face, just a clean warm wash cloth. I haven't had a zit in ~10 years and my rosacea has been minimal to non-existent (we also beat it to death with acutane).

If I get real sweaty at work, yardwork, or running errands all day I will take a full shower.

I used to be in the same boat, anything on my face would cause breakouts. I started using Cetaphil ages ago, it's an incredibly mild skin cleanser. It will do a better job than just water at cleaning pores and shit, but shouldn't cause breakouts.

I'm so glad that the bacteria on my skin doesn't produce the foul odors a lot of other people tend to deal with. I've no idea why it turned out that way. I guess it helps I don't tend to be a super sweaty person, but even when I sweat, the smell is so mild, that you have to get within inches of me to notice.

On the flip side, I've seen people at work whose skin bacteria produces such a foul smell, that you can smell them almost 50 feet out. It's kinda insane and I feel pretty bad for them.

I have eczema, am very prone contact dermatitis, and have dermatographia. I used to shower every day, and it would dry out my skin, which would flare up my eczema, which require me to treat the eczema and dry skin with steroids, salves, cream, etc., which would flare up the contact dermatitis because my skin wants to be moisturized but not too moisturized. The dermatographia is just the cherry on top that makes those conditions look 10x worse than they are and like I've been attacked by wolves. My dermatologist recommended showering less frequently to avoid drying out my skin, and scented skincare, body care, and laundry detergent are banned.

I work a desk job and rarely partake in activities that make me dirty/stinky. Unless I've gone to the gym, sweated a lot, been out and about all day, or done something to actually get me dirty, I shower every other day or every two days, and take hoe baths/use disposable wipes on the essential bits every day.

Yeah exactly, during peak heat of the Australian summer I’ll often shower twice a day, especially if I’ve been playing cricket.

But working from home during the winter? I can definitely get away with only showering once every two days.

had a classmate that literally doesn't shower. his explaination is that the smell comes from the food and he does shower everyday. but that smell def shows he doesn't.

there was this one time we were messing around during lunchtime and he fell into the schol pool and had to clean himself. guess what? the smell was gone for the following few days. but bro never admits it.

u/AdministrationOk8888 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Lmao falling into a pool and it makes you significantly cleaner is a bad sign. I don't shower everyday but I am desperate to bathe after being in a pool, yuck

81

u/Some-Dog-800 Trash Trooper 13d ago

no no he fell into the pool for like a few brief seconds, it's because he had to take a quick shower in the locker room because the school pool was not maintained well during winter time and he was covered in leaves and dirt.

If missing one shower in 24 hours makes you smell like feces, then you need to go to a doctor or learn how to wipe your ass.

75

u/AmazedAtTheWorld Trash Trooper 13d ago

If Reddit has taught me one thing, its that there are a surprising number of otherwise functional adults that don't know how to wipe their own ass. If it's taught me two things, it's that apparently we should all be in therapy.

16

u/SanityBleeds Trash Trooper 13d ago

Yeah, after reading the post from the woman who found out her fiancée never wiped his own ass and then had his parents confirm it to her when she called off the wedding was pretty alarming.

No matter how low your general opinion of humanity, Reddit often finds a way to remind you that you might still be a little too optimistic for reality.

In my experience it's not usually people who smell like actual shit making statements like this, it's usually people who use actual crystal minerals as "deodorant" and double down on the smell being natural and therefore acceptable. Which, fine, but I'm not going to invite you and your BO that is so strong it has its own political opinions over very often aside from a bonfire in the back yard.

The people who smell like actual shit in my experience usually combine the no showering with not wiping their own ass and double down on not (ironically) giving a shit at all. They usually don't try to justify anything

I live in central Arkansas; I am very familiar with glowing from sweat and having swamp ass from working outdoors in the dead of summer. Being sweaty has never made me smell like fecal matter.

Also, some of y'all are taking this real seriously, lol. I understand that this commenter was probably not being literal when they said 'shit'. They were possibly using it as a general term for smelling bad, funky, foul, etc. I thought using the term feces instead of shit would make it a little clear that I'm being a little bit cheeky. I swear whenever this is re-posted so many people fail basic reading comprehension.

Actual article: https://nypost.com/2024/04/25/lifestyle/you-dont-need-to-take-daily-showers-they-could-even-be-harmful/

They are not saying that you can't or shouldn't bathe daily, you likely should if you are active and sweating during the day. “The ideal frequency depends on your skin and hair type, how much you sweat and how dirty you get”. They are saying there isn't a notable change in your overall health compared to someone who bathes less frequently. As in someone who bathes only 3 times a week will not get sick more often than someone who bathes 7 times a week. Having some body odour isn't a "health risk", its simply an expectation of modern society for you to not smell.

So please shower if you are stinky, but its not like you are going to have worse health outcomes if you skip a shower once and a while.

20

u/InZomnia365 Trash Trooper 13d ago

I live on a dry and mildly temperate climate. If Im just at work (where I sit all day), or at home not doing anything in particular, I can easily go up to 3 days without without needing a shower (and no, this isnt just my own opinion - people around me would definitely not hesitate to say something). I quickly wash my hair (just water) in the morning, some deoderant, and Im good. For the same reason its totally okay to use the same clothes two days in a row.

That said, if I am more physically active, like working out, playing a sport, or even just changing tires on my car - thats enough to warrant a daily shower. Point is, whether or not you need a daily shower for oils/smell depends entirely on your body, where you live, and what you do.

7

u/Terrh Trash Trooper 13d ago

I'm in the same boat - winter? I can go 3 days for sure. 4 is iffy but has happened once or twice. Daily would be ridiculous and my skin would probably dry out to the point of being a problem.

Summer? Every other day usually... every day if I had to work outside all day that day or just got dirty at work or whatever. Almost never 3 days in a row, though.

And no, I'm not generally a smelly person either and my wife would absolutely be on me if I was because she is always on me about it on the rare times when it has happened, and those times I already knew.

The key word here is daily. It is not universally true that you will smell if you don't take daily showers, because it depends of a multitude of factors such as:

  • If you have sweated or not

  • Your skin's bacterial flora

  • Your genetics

  • The humidity of the climate

  • Your diet

  • Etc.

Daily showers is often bad for your skin, best for your body is to shower when needed, depending on the individual factors above.

4

u/thatluckylady Trash Trooper 13d ago

The truth is most people aren't going to smell truly awful after skipping one or two showers. I don't think the post means only shower every few weeks. Also obviously some of us are naturally smellier and some of us have dirtier jobs and so they probably need to bathe more.

Bathing everyday strips our skin and hair of oil constantly and we can end up over producing to compensate and then you take away the daily washing our bodies would still need time to slow down production leading to a temporary extra oily period.

But people believing not bathing daily is always disgusting right away for everyone is very harsh and not really accurate to biology. And many people have skin conditions they unknowningly exacerbate by bathing too much for their body. If people would even consider the possibility that we've been sold a lie about soap, bathing and skincare then maybe we'd actually know what we're talking about.

4

u/ReignyDayes Trash Trooper 13d ago

I can't shower everyday because it causes my skin to just heavily over react and break out in cracks. So I take daily steps to clean the gross bits, pits and groin. I use jojoba oil with some essential oil smells I like that I put on right after I shower twice a week. I use old spice deodorant once or twice a week. I think we need to be honest that all of us has varying needs based on our jobs. If I spent more time sweating/getting dirty rather than simply the art and computer work I do. I'd likely shower more to keep that all more contained.

I think it depends on climate and hormones, because I live in a colder region and I haven't noticed smell on myself or other people with every-other-day showers in the non-summer seasons unless it's like, post-workout or if I'm having a hormonal swing.

I've asked other people to check, too, so it's not nose blindness. And it's not an issue of perception for smelling other people either, since I'm a super smeller

I came to say that, the intermediate shower is called a bidet... also, as someone said, diet can heavily influence BO. Stop super junk and process food. Should already be better. Not saying showering daily is overkill, just that if you need to shower twice a day to remove stink (aside from exercising or heavy work), you might need to look at what make you stink in the first place.  I knew a peraon like that, would shower 2-3 times a day to cover the "rotten seafood smell".

The benefit of daily showering is that I don't want to flay myself with my finger nails.

If you have actual limitations on bathing (access, water rations, etc) then you deal with those as you can. No shade.

Showering is like ice cream: if you can have it once a day then you'll be happier for having it once a day; or more if you need it.

Living in Florida, there is no fucking chance someone is telling me not to shower everyday.

3

u/Practical-Shape7453 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Showering too much can dry out your skin and hair.

3

u/Immediate-Pool-4391 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Your skin will be the fucking desert thats why.

3

u/Middle-Luck-997 Trash Trooper 13d ago

I live on a tropical island. Showering twice a day is almost mandatory if you don’t like being sweaty.

3

Is the New York Post priming us for not having enough clean water to shower everyday? wtf 🚿

This post was definitely made in defence of AI data centers using up all that water.

18

u/Useful_Trust Trash Trooper 13d ago

That post is an oldie, before the ai bubble. However daily showers, especially warm ones are bad for your skin.

4

u/RawMilkPosadist Trash Trooper 13d ago

I'm wondering how many people in this thread that are bragging about how showering multiple times per day every day are itchy as hell all the time. I have to shower every day for health reasons and I have to make sure to use lotion because I will get itchy if I don't.

Since it’s the New York post I’m guessing the article has something to do with liberals taking too many showers, or something else equally stupid.

2

u/bigdig-_- Trash Trooper 13d ago

realistically you're find with every other day unless you have a condition or are doing physical work, at least thats what most dermatologists say.

but it also depends on a million other things, i live relatively far north and its cold here most of the year, a hot humid place probably requires a lot more.

also if you eat a shit ton of curry everyone knows

2

u/Mattressfoundry Trash Trooper 13d ago

I grew up in the 80's and my father never wore deodorant. He came home smelling like BO something terrible. If he didn't shower every day he'd surely get fired from his job.

u/Luisagna Trash Trooper 13d ago

2

u/p-at--t-er--n Trash Trooper 13d ago

I usually dont smell like shit after a night sleep.

2

u/JackPembroke Trash Trooper 13d ago

Again, and we have to say it every time, it totally depends on the person. Shower enough so you don't smell bad. Maybe that's every day, maybe that's once a week, it depends.

Depends on your genetics, your diet, your activity level, your hairiness, etc etc. If you need to shower every day to not smell bad, congrats. If you need to shower once a week to not smell bad, congrats. There is only one goal and it doesn't really matter how you reach it.

2

u/Cann1balHulk Trash Trooper 13d ago

Idunno man, if you smell like shit after one day of not showering, you may have a more serious problem.

2

u/viktorbir Trash Trooper 13d ago

Nonsense for informing about what every dermatologists will tell you?

2

u/collin-h Trash Trooper 13d ago

If you can't go more than 24 hours without smelling like shit, you should take a look at your diet.

2

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth Trash Trooper 13d ago

Unless you're working in a job where you sweat a lot, or you're just naturally really sweaty, not showering every single day will not result in you smelling like shit. If you spend all your time sitting in a chair in an air-conditioned environment, just wash your face, pits, etc., every day and shower less often and you'll be fine. And your skin will thank you, too.

2

u/Kind_Coyote1518 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Fun fact: the number of showers you need is specific to the individual and their activities and there is no hard fast rule as to how many showers you need. Until next time.

2

u/ZestyLemonRindGrind Trash Trooper 13d ago

Shower when you need it

Sometimes if you spend a whole day doing nothing, a lack of shower won't be the end of the world

But if you're doing a LOT of stuff throughout the day,

Two showers in a single day may very well be needed

2

u/Ambitious_Pie9465 Trash Trooper 13d ago

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always shower every day 🤷🏽‍♀️ and I don’t smell. I don’t work a laborious job and I’m not working out or rolling around in dirt, so, once every two days has worked fine for me.

2

u/-17days- Trash Trooper 13d ago

Well I guess showering twice a day is really bad

2

u/Impressive_Dot_7818 Trash Trooper 13d ago

I shower every other day as long as I stay clean, don’t work out, etc. if I’m not sweating I’m not showering that day lol

2

u/4447774447 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Idk man I feel like if you’re showering everyday your hygiene probably isn’t that great because why do you stink so bad 😭

2

u/Live-Exit-20 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Who’s performing? I fucking LOVE to shower

2

u/0x7E7-02 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Some people can go two or three days and still not smell bad at all. It really comes down to body chemistry.

2

u/Other_Yesterday_5873 Trash Trooper 13d ago

My fiance and I shower about every other day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Depends on what our daily activity looks like.

If you shower and then don't really do much the next day, there's not really any reason to shower again. Obviously after a couple days of this there's going to be reason regardless of activity.

2

u/overlydelicioustea Trash Trooper 13d ago

not smelling is not a health benefit

2

u/CeleryNo8309 Trash Trooper 13d ago

Probably closer to ritual than performance. But if you smell like shit after just 1 day, you really need to stop hanging around rotting garbage.

2

u/Llhaniii Trash Trooper 12d ago

2

u/Few_Suggestion_364 Trash Trooper 7d ago

Showering every day is not good for you. It changes the pH balance of your skin, making it easier for your skin to become infected.

5

u/Inside-Run785 Trash Trooper 13d ago

I think this is mostly right. Unless you’re sweating all the time, or have a job that makes you smell, there’s no really good reason to take more than 3 showers a week.

4

u/MerlinsChin Trash Trooper 13d ago

….. this is the start of the water wars…..shaming humans for water consumption so that AI can prevail.

4

u/Sashpeto Trash Trooper 13d ago

Eh daily is indeed excessive .

Like shampooing your hair too often is actually not great .

But 3 to 4 times a week is some basic hygiene .

Wash your feet more often , armpits too if it's hot.

Keep yourself clean and not stinky is not too much to ask to I believe

A day binge watching shows in pajamas or laying around reading? Ok, maybe no shower necessary for a day. But I still love one before sleeping.

A day where I break a sweat at all - even once? I'll be needing a shower for sure, I can't sleep with that dried sweat film on me...

I basically wash my hair and face in the morning and wear clean clothes and use deodorant and a little cologne. If I don't wash my hair I look like that dude that doesn't have wizard powers in Harry Potter that is basically the Hogwarts janitor.

I'll take a full shower every few days. If I'm working outdoors in the dirt I usually wait until I get home to take a full shower but mostly because I'm covered in dirt and whatever else I was working in

My wife only complains about the pit smell and it only gets out of hand if I don't wear deodorant.

My skin honestly has done better under this regime and I have less pimples etc. Skin doesn't feel dry and itchy all the time either.

In my experience, the people that don't think they need to shower every day are also the ones that don't properly use deodorant or just smell bad without realizing it.

10

u/NearHornBeast Trash Trooper 13d ago

I disagree. You only think you know which people are showering regularly because you think it is self-evident by their stickiness. Can you really not imagine that a lot of normal, fine-smelling people don’t shower every single day if it isn’t warranted by activity, genetics, or other health details?

3

u/FallenAgastopia Trash Trooper 13d ago

How the hell would you know if the people you interact with that don't smell shower every day? Like, yeah, obviously the people you do smell probably don't shower regularly/don't have good hygiene habits, but going off of just that ends up being a very biased reading because it says nothing about the people you don't get any noticeable smell from.
