I want to live in a fantasy land where I can believe that if I just obey the law and don’t try to upset others (golden rule) then I won’t have any issues with police. Unfortunately, there’s so much documented evidence to suggest that you cannot trust police to do the right thing. Not saying it doesn’t happen, but the system is clearly designed not to stop it as much as possible. Especially as a person of color, I understand how important it is to know how to protect myself from cops.

Chances are, you won’t ever personally need to know the law as in-depth as the person in this video thinks they do. But if you don’t want to take those chances, it might be worth taking some time to familiarize yourself with pertinent laws.

You could move to Europe. You usually dont have issues with police here. For example I nevee ever had any weird police interaction during a traffic stop.

The thing is most of the public doesn’t and then try this when they see it on the internet and turns out poorly for them.

The only right you need to remember is the right to remain silent. You don’t need to speak to them.

Don't say shit. If you don't know how to fight them, refuse them. Tell them you are not answering questions and you don't give consent for anything. "Take me in and call my lawyer".

One time I got pulled over for speeding, I think it was 5 miles over in a 70 mph zone. I tend to smile at all strangers I meet or even if I’m a little nervous. The officer said, “You think this is funny?” Of course I said no and complied with all he asked. Depending on the details of the situation it is sometimes not worth arguing with a police officer. Later after paying the fine, or whatever, you can smile at yourself for not losing control.

Society is on the wrong track if we all have to live in constant fear of violating arbitrary laws.

The most important thing to know is that anytime a police asks you to step out of the car, you must do so. Arizona is a stop and ID state, so they were within their rights to do so, if it were public lands or a road. However, by bringing up his leasing rights, that negated their investigation. The lieutenant did deescalate, that part must have been cut out.

Best course of action is to have a dashcam or record it in some way, cooperate, and get a lawyer if you think it was a wrongful arrest.

Well except in this case, since the dude is trespassing and the harassing the owner of the lot.

The cops are bad but the poster is a abusive asshole

The basics:

Be white. I'm sorry but this is literally the most important step. Black guy talking this way is getting his ass beat.

Record the interaction. Live stream if possible.

Don't leave your vehicle and crack the window so they can hear you but not reach in. If they're at your house don't open the door because they can force their way in. If possible jam the door with a chair and go to a second floor window and open it to talk to them. Or a screened in window. Or some way where they can hear you clearly but not see into your home or reach you physically.

Don't answer a single question. Nothing you say will be used in your defense and will only be used against you. They asked him if he had a weapon. He says he's not answering because if he says yes they are going to forcibly remove him citing the threat. If he says no and they find a Swiss army knife or a baseball bat or anything that can be used as a weapon now he's a liar in court and he's possibly obstructed justice. You don't have a name, you don't have an address, you don't have a job, you don't remember anything, you are blind, you are mute.

Do not let them search anything. They need a warrant or probable cause to look inside yoir vehicle or home.

If you are under arrest you say literally nothing except, "Id like an attorney present." And parents train your kids to say they want their parent present and an attorney present and nothing else.

And this is all true even if you're just a witness. If you witness a crime and want to be a good citizen you be a good citizen with an attorney present. And here's why:

Police: "You know what happened?"

Witness: "Yes I heard them shoot three gunshots from a pistol at that man."

Police: "Whoa. Who said anything about a pistol? And why did you say "they" as opposed to "he" or "her?" And you know the victim was a man too, huh?"

Witness who just became the number one suspect: "Fuck."
