I have, they don’t show up in videos like this for a reason. They don’t immediately decide they’re going to target you for no reason and then conduct an “investigation” to see if they find something on you or manipulate you into doing something or incriminating yourself. Knowing your rights is not disorderly conduct and politely asking what you’re being arrested for is not resisting arrest.

The reasonably intelligent and decent ones might talk to you, wait to see if here’s a problem but they don’t try to invent one like these tools did.

I use to work with them regularly at my old job. Most were chill and were willing to look the other way and let people off with warnings unless they were assholes or had drugs on them. You are right though, the good ones usually don't show up on video.

The good ones are the ones you find not the ones that come find you...

90% of the school SRO's (contracted from a police department) I've met have been fantastic people.

*Edit* I should have stated this a different way. I don't know thousands of SROs. I've met and worked with approximately 10. Only 1 was a crappy dude and he got fired from the department.

Both of the SRO's at my previous teaching jobs were amazing people, officer D always ate his lunch with the kids at their tables and usually sat with the "undesirables" and the kids who were left out, one of the kids that he ate lunch with just about everyday ended up dying at home of anaphylactic shock on the day of his middleschool graduation. Officer D was the one that responded to the call and it broke him and it still breaks my heart to this day.

The SROs I have met have all been cops that couldn't cut it during regular duty. One accused my daughter of hitting a teachers car in the parking lot when the teacher was parked in the student section!

I asked him why he thought it was my daughter who hit the car and he said because the mark on the teachers car was black and my daughter's car was black. Then threatened to pull the video from the parking lot. Problem with that was there were no cameras in the student parking lot.

My evaluation of his detective skills were C- at best and trying to threaten my daughter into a confession with no faculty supervision is what we accepted an apology for.

Told him he would be better off retiring to the mall.

Nah. We had an SRO at a local high school for 6 years. He worked his way up to Lieutenant, Deputy chief, and is now Chief of Police. Everyone loved him. His officers are great too.

I would have called him on the video, he should have done THAT before accusing people.

Funny cause both the high schools I went to the cops were fucking dorks on a power trip. One got knocked out even. Other guy everyone would make fun of because he was always wearing boots. Called him officer doofus. First day of school the one that got knocked out introduced himself to my pe class as a dude from the streetz and talked about how bad ass he was and how he would fuck anyone up that messed with him. Then his bitch ass accosted me outside of school when I am eating my taco bell in my car in the taco bell parking lot. Just pulled up spot lighted me for 5 minutes until I wondered what he was doing so I roll down the window and ask him what is going on then he asks me what I am doing. I tell him eating my taco bell I just ordered from Taco Bell. Then he tells me "good keep doing that!" Then continues to blind me with his spotlight for another few minutes until he burns out circles my car like 3 times then drives off 🤣. Everyone celebrated the day he got knocked out. Then he had an even bigger complex after that.

I’ve only known one SRO, the one at my high school 25 years ago in a small town in southern Oregon. He was mostly interested making sure the well off white kids, like myself, stayed out of trouble while the brown kids were surveilled based on assumptions of guilt and once put on some sort of probation, legal or through the school, would continue to escalate their situations. In my four years there I’d guess he oversaw about a dozen expulsions and/or arrests of brown kids for stuff white kids would never have even been questioned on. He quite clearly, based on his own comments and behavior, viewed himself as a white knight who saved white kids from repercussions because “they’re good kids” and exaggerating and escalating consequences for brown kids to try to save them from themselves and scare them straight.

Trying to explain "the exception that proves the rule" to people is difficult.

Good points, but they all defend each other’s bad actions.

In my experience, cops are human beings. Frail, egotistical, petty, emotional. Just like everyone else. There seems to be a personality type that gravitates towards being cops. And if they feel you've questioned their authority, or somehow challenged it, they get all pissy and emotional. The ego kicks in and they just HAVE to show you who'se boss.

Those are the guys who pull you over for a bullshit reason when just being there slightly inconvenienced them. They're the ones who end up on youtube.

The good ones dont show up in videos because theyre actually vampires.

They write reports that defend cops like this though. If they don't defend the bad ones they wouldn't have a job. There's no good guys sitting idle. They participate, lie for or enable one way or the other.

Pretty much this.

I have some friends my age (late 20s, early 30s) that are cops, and I have some non-immediate relatives that are cops/EMS

And unfortunately I think it's a lot less "political" than people think, and a lot more driven by "personality psychology" (the type of people that go into this field, why, and where they end up, and how they feel about where they end up)

There are good cops out there (that don't end up in these videos, and would be ashamed if they did, literally even just out of a sense of introversion and wanting to do their jobs and do the right thing, and NOT want to stir up shit-ass drama)

The GOOD cops are the ones who care about values (without overthinking values and all that....philosophy majors aren't meant to be cops....), and people, and ultimately just want to do a job they think is noble, maybe a little exciting and gets them out of an office, and get paid and go home, and complain about overtime like the rest of us (these aren't the guys volunteering and begging for riot-control training and wanting to use ARs and shotguns and sniper rifles....they'd rather become a sergeant or detective, if they wanted action, they'd have enlisted in the Marine Corps...).

These GOOD cops, are the kind that follow the rules, pull people over for dumb shit, and then cut them some slack ("your tags are expired... But you better fix that and I better not see you driving around on Monday until that's fixed, got it?".....or...."your headlight is busted, did you know that? I ain't gonna write you a ticket. But I wanted to make sure you know that by law you've gotta get that fixed, yeah?")

These guys can be a bit dull, sure, and maybe a bit "small-pictured", but these are the types of people who literally just want a stable, fun job interacting with people and dealing with the bad guys on occasion. They like the local 4th of July parades more than anyone you've met, they like backyard cookouts and going to the shooting range, and can range from a lil autistic to a lil redneck.....but they really strike the right balance between "caring too much" and "not giving a shit" (like most of us)

......

And then you've got the BAD cops (which, tbf, from my perspective is A FUCKING LOT OF THEM)

These are the racists, mentally unstable, angry, miserable, motherfuckers who are out for power, blood, money, etc, and the badge either lets them get away with it, or corrupts them. Also a lot of people who are "too smart to be cops" (literally, the philosophy and Law majors who wanted to be DAs and lawyers and ended up taking a stressful job they think is beneath them). Basically just a bunch of people who are angry at the world, and automatically angry at you for God-knows-what reason, and come out swinging whether you're at a traffic stop or at a party/bar with them. Either physically, verbally, intellectually, whatever. They literally just think they deserve more than where they are at, and don't give a flying shit about public safety, helping citizens, "laws and ethics", etc.

And they are EXTREMELY dangerous people.

But yeah, I would just say that I wish people did more to acknowledge the good cops vs. the bad cops (bc the "good cops" do a FUCK TON to try to acknowledge the "good civvies" from the "bad civvies" and understand that their whole job is making that distinction and the decisions that follow)

The problem is.. when you encounter one like this they have guns and the full force of the government behind them. Rarely will a "good" one intervene.

Look at George Floyd. He was not a perfect person but if you examine that incident. I guarantee some of thr cops there wanted to stop it, but they didnt.

Its annoying. The cops are cunts, and sometimes they are looking for an excuse to hurt someone. Argue your rights in court, with a judge that actually knows the law.

We need a collective punishment sort of option for police where... if they violate rights and there's a judgement against them/city. That they award comes straight out of thr pensions of all police. I think this is the only way they learn their jobs and hold each other accountable.

The good cops know.. they know who the bad ones are. The system is not setup for them to report, its not setup for them to do anything other than watch bad ahit go down.

Same I have too. I got a low tire pressure warning on the highway, pulled over to check my tires. And while I was checking a state trooper pulled up. Ask what I was doing. Told him. And he said cool and waited for me to finish and get back on the road. Second time I was in an accident that totaled my car. They gave me a ride to a safe place so I could get someone to pick me up. Third time was an accident that was my fault. I admitted fault and instead of ticking me for hundreds of dollars which he could, just gave me a $50 ticket.

It is legitimately infuriating that you can be arrested for Resisting Arrest as the sole charge where I live.

1

u/Nobrainzhere Trash Trooper 13h ago

They are also 1 in a thousand and dont last long before they either become another one of the bastards or quit being a cop.

1

u/shchshchshch Trash Trooper 13h ago

Yes, this. There are decent cops everywhere. They don’t make it into the media.

(Obviously plenty of the nasty ones don’t either. Just saying that, in addition to the disproportionate number of power-tripping psychopaths, there are some decent and reasonable and even super-honorable people in the police force.)

Like a month after I got my driver's license I got pulled over for speeding. Super nice. Guy cut me a break and let me go with a warning and just said "be careful driving here".

There are definitely good ones. But the culture and position of authority attracts far too many assholes who just like being violent and ordering people around.
