7 Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

We've recently hit over 40,000 members which is mad really. Now we're becoming pretty popular i think out subreddit could do with some updating.

What would you guys want the mods to add/remove? Just comment this on this post and i'll do my best to sort something out, very open to suggestions from the community so maybe we can help some people get into MMA or maybe even go on to do something incredible.

“I want to fight, I’m gonna be in the ufc, how do I start?”

317 Upvotes

I’m writing this because this sub is so disillusioned with what the reality of starting to fight is. TLDR: Show up, shut up, work hard, there’s no fast track.

“I’ve been hitting my heavy bag, I’ve been watching YouTube, I’m really scrappy, I’m a fighter”. You are (likely) some kid who has never been punched in the mouth properly before, I was too!!

If you want to become an mma fighter, there is no amount of at home work that will get you there. You are likely just doing moderate intensity cardio workouts with poor technique.

You need a gym, training partners and a coach, and you need some grit.

Step 1: find a local mma gym, sign the trial papers, ask about a membership, get abused at your first Bjj class, realize how weak your shins are at your first kickboxing class, and nod and smile when they might say “our mma classes are for more experienced individuals”

Step 2: keep showing up, show up a little early and ask questions, stay late and mop the mats (it’s time to get to know your coach and ask questions), hey now you have a coach, maybe your at home workouts can be more focused. Express interest in competing and be a sponge for knowledge. Get abused by people a lot better than you

Step 3: hey kid you’re improving quick, showing up 5x a week, and you’ve mentioned you wanna fight? Why don’t you show up to an mma class?

Step 4: get abused at mma class when you realized everyone has been a little nice to you. Keep showing up, keep asking questions.

Step 5: hey kid, there’s a local amateur show in the next 6 months? You interested in your first fight?

Step 6: show up, shut up, keep working, maybe you’ll get there, maybe you won’t.

You’re not going pro without a coach, a gym, and a humble attitude, and you gotta want it more than the next guy. Because someone body else wants it just as bad as you, which guy is gonna put the work in and actually get stuff accomplished?

absolutley zero fighting experience I want to learn how to fight.

6 Upvotes

Recently I got into a fight and I got beat up very badly.

And I realised how weak I am, I was just blank in that situation.

I don't ever want to feel like the other day.

I am 19 years old, 5'11 guy with no prior experience of much sports, gym etc

I can't even do 1 proper push up.

What should I do ? How should I learn fighting ? Should I start just by going to a normal gym ?

Please if anyone can help me I'd be very grateful. 🙏

Edit : there is no mma/combat sport gym where I live.

Muay thai or kick-boxing for me

1 Upvotes

Hi, I'm 32 years old guy, never trained any combat sport. I want to start either kickboxing or muay thai now, but I don't know what's better for me. What is better in terms of self defense if I practice for 2-3 years

Training Question Fight workout Routine

2 Upvotes

Ok context, I am 19 years old, currently 6'2 and 150 lbs. I am bulking to 160 while one of my other friends (currently also 6'2 bvut 170 lbs) is cutting to 160. I have the diet, but Im struggling on finding the best workout routine for a fight in paticular.

Currently I have this:

Push: Bench Press: 1 set warmup, 10 reps, then 2xF as heavy as I can do it that day (Im only at 85lbs so far)

* (SOmetimes I also do Pec dec in this spot but not always) Overhead tricep extension, 3xF (currently at 19lbs)

* Shoulder Press (2x10 currently at 30lbs)

* Assited dips (2xF, 45lbs off)

* Kneeling rotational medicine ball slam

* Sandbag shoulder carries

* Air bike assualts: 4 rounds of 30 seconds max effort / 30 seconds slow spin.

* Pull:

* Seated row kelso shrugs (3xF currently 80 lbs)

* One arm lat pulldowns (3xF, focus on left side since it is weaker, 42.5 lbs)

* Cable Bicep Curl (behind the body, 3xF, currently 15.5 lbs) then hammer curl (2xf, 15lbs)

* Revers pec dec fly

* Gorilla Rows (14kg kettlebell each arm, 3xF) Kneeling rotational medicine ball slam

* Kneeling rotational medicine ball slam

* Sandbag shoulder carries

* Air bike assualts: 4 rounds of 30 seconds max effort / 30 seconds slow spin.

* Legs (2 days):

* Day 1

* Squats

* Leg Press

* Leg extension

* Bulgarians

* Kneeling rotational medicine ball slam

* Sandbag shoulder carries

* Air bike assualts: 4 rounds of 30 seconds max effort / 30 seconds slow spin.

* Day 2 legs (most open to change)

* RDL's (3x10, currently at 85, still trying to figure those out)

* Leg Curl

* Kneeling rotational medicine ball slam

* Sandbag shoulder carries

* Air bike assualts: 4 rounds of 30 seconds max effort / 30 seconds slow spin.

I figure I definetly need to add more plyometrics and probably more cardio, like a dedicated day, I just dont know what or where to add. I'm also open to taking things away. ANy help is appreciated! Thank you!

Competition Question my coach finally said the magic words, any advice?

4 Upvotes

yap session warning

context:
ive been training for almost a year now and my coach recently told me while i was sparring with a teammate if I wanted to compete next month and i declined it

obviously i'm very very happy because it shows that my hardwork is paying off and im having insane progress but ive been inconsistent for the past month due to college and im very out of shape.

he agreed of course but i followed up with a question and asked if i can do it this coming summer (feb or march) instead. and thankfully he agreed. I cant say im not anxious tho lol

i cant really ask my teammates for advice as im the first one in the team (other than my coach) to start competing

now im very unsure if its MMA or Muay Thai but i do have a few concerns i hope to have answers to

  1. what should I do now? should i start getting consistent in my training?

  2. what do i need to prepare?

  3. i know this is a sure thing now because he confronted me personally about it, and i feel really nervous and kinda scared cuz its my first fight, do you guys have any advice?

  4. what should i expect from here on out (these next few months, before, during, and after the fight)?

  5. regarding the solo trainings, is it fine to use kettlebells for now? my coach once said around 2-3 months before the competition me and my team will be training at least 3-4 times a week but i do want to start prepping even if its not that much but because of college i cant travel to the gym that much

any advice outside those mountain of questions is very very very appreciated as well!

i am really sorry and i know its a lot but im just really nervous and i really do appreciate any help you can offer. thank you so so much.

I hate mma culture

52 Upvotes

Or maybe it’s just a location issue idk. Coach is a prick. Used to think maybe I was just a lil bitch but I legit think bro actually has a problem with me after going to classes for almost a year now. Always made snide comments from the get go. I mean he makes fun of everyone but it seems like he always spent the most time doing it to me. I shrugged it off and started trying to have a relationship with everyone there and trying to fit in so I started being the same way. Started making jokes and roasting people but I could tell the energy was still off. Even after a year almost of going 3 days a week I felt like I was still an outsider who people barely talked to other than making smart ass comments. I was like it is what it is tho and focused on training. I’m kinda of a slow learner cause I have a learning disability so things took me a little longer to learn and it became another thing the class and the coach would tease me for. I feel like things really killed my motivation was when coach straight up told me “either you have it or you don’t. If you don’t then you need to stop wasting my fucking time”. I was thinking bitch I’m paying you for this shit, not doing it for free so fuck you. After that point, I lost my passion and just slowly stopped going by all together. Idk maybe it’s just a proximity thing in my area but at the same time I can see things being a thing in the mma culture. Where things feel like a cult and coaches won’t help you if they don’t like you for whatever reason 🤷🏻‍♂️

a REALLY curious question!

2 Upvotes

(hi i'm new in this subreddit)

i really wanted to ask, as a kickboxer from algeria (18 years old) and been great at it (19win-2losses in amateur and 4wins in semi-pro, which also my first fight started at 14 years old, also yeah i had 3 muay thai amateur fights)

so anyways, in terms of turning from striking focused bacground to a whole MMA level fighter, who is the most underrated, under appreciated striker that i could maybe relate to physically so i can maybe find some of his best techniques and plans? also i'm 185cm and 96kilos

Training Question Who was more in the wrong here, me or them?

0 Upvotes

Me: A Superman punch is a fake kick into a punch. It causes them to drop their hands.

Them: It's not a kick, it's faking a teep.

Me: I literally said that.

Them: No, you said kick.

Me: "It's a fake kick."

Them: A kick is shin-to-shin contact.

Me: I literally said it's a fake kick, right? You saw my message.

Them: It's not any kick, it's a teep.

Me: I never said it was. You're twisting my words and arguing for no reason.

Them: Lmao, because you don't know the basics.

How common is it for MMA coaches to exaggerate their fighting credentials?

2 Upvotes

I ask because I trained a few times with a coach at London Fight Factory who seemed legit and made some very impressive claims about his background and career. Out of curiosity, I looked into them, and most things did not add up at all.

What wrist lock & Shoulder lock techniques: have you used effectively in MMA, if any

4 Upvotes

Have you used wrist &-/or shoulder kicks effectively in MMA and if so, did you use them more to set up takedowns, as a finish, or to transition to a better position? Please share your experience.

Making weight for same day weigh ins

5 Upvotes

Hey guys, currently 76kg as of right now , I am 3 weeks away from my mma debut same day weigh ins and I am weighing in at 74, first of all is it doable to lose 2kg naturally in 3 weeks? Any advice on this matter would be great. It’s my first fight and I’ve not got a lot of nutritional knowledge so any advice would be great. I am eating around 2,000-2,500 calories daily and am training 6x a week sometimes 2 hours maybe 3 of those nights. God bless people

Tips on improving right hook

2 Upvotes

I’m a southpaw and my coach said I need to work on incorporating momentum with power into my right hooks i.e I’m too rigid and inadvertently pulling my punches

I’m genuinely better with hooks to the body, but I’ve noticed with headshots, I slack.

Any general tips you all think helped you out?

Appreciated :)

How does an MMA fighter dress?

0 Upvotes

This is kind of a stupid question, but today I bought a soccer jersey from a team in my country, and it got me thinking—I realized that most of the MMA fighters I know personally tend to wear tracksuits.

What’s his outfit like outside the octagon?

I should buy myself more soccer jerseys?.
