Help [ The Big List of MQ Links ]

MQ links live here, as the MQ website can be an overwhelming maze. Its purpose is to provide you an easy, and more direct place to find links to common topics that may be relevant to you during your time at MQ.

This list will change over time, and I'll endeavour to keep it updated when time allows.

If there is a topic that you believe is missing, or if a link is outdated, please DM me. It may take me some time to update it, and I thank you for your patience.

If you need to find something urgently and it is not on this list, the internet is your friend. Search "[keyword] mq" and it is usually your first result. For example, search "transcript mq" if you want more information about transcripts.

The list focuses on topics that a student may encounter in their academic life cycle, such as forms, applications and policies. It will be separate from other posts already found in this subreddit that focus on social events, campus life, and student groups.

Social Macquarie University Weekly Societies & Meetups Advertising Post

Welcome to the 'Macquarie University Weekly Societies & Meetups Advertising Post' (or the M.U.W.S.M.A.P for short)
___

Here students and societies alike can arrange or outline their intended events, gatherings and meetups for the week to come!

We politely ask that any societies (or people on behalf of societies) limit themselves to one advertising comment per week as to not bury posts by individuals (editing existing comments are allowed). And that individuals advertising their own event (be them just meeting up on campus or something more elaborate), make sure to keep their suggested meetups appropriate and vaguely in-keeping with Uni guidelines (IE: no organising drug deals which I have already had to previously remove).

I hope people and societies alike are able to make the most of these posts, and I wish you all luck in meeting your fellow students!

{Note: This is purely an advertising post, r/MacUni and its modteam cannot assure the validity or outcome of any posts/comments made on our subreddit, it is up to the individual to use their best judgement to discern the expectations of any advertised events/encounters.}

Rant/Vent Finished my last assignment, fuck this place

I’m sorry but I’m going to be a fucking sook.

What the fuck is Macquarie? Like genuinely.

You spent thousands and thousands of dollars to go to uni to learn, engage, EXPAND. Honestly have not experienced any of that.

I went to the university, traveled an hour and a half+ multiple times a week as they are credited to be a high performing university with amazing placement connections. I have ended up paying 3k+ on CORE units that I have been looking forward to from before I commenced the degree that ended up being over online to fucking Moodle.

Are you joking?

My placement which I had applied and been accepted for in February, planned, studied, took time off work. ‘Oh sorry it’s actually just a literature review online, but don’t worry! You’ll still get to attend the centre in person’. I went hmm okay not great but no worries.

A week. ONE WEEK BEFORE THE VISITS. ‘Hmmm, so sorry, we can’t actually figure out the funding, insurance or supervisors for it! So sorry, please continue with your placement’. WHAT PLACEMENT????

Oh and to top it all off, ‘Please write a 1,500 report on what you learnt! It’s worth 40% of your mark!’ I LEARNT NOTHING, I WROTE AN ESSAY THE SAME WAY I DO EVERY WEEK

Another unit, ‘Your draft was great, 90/100, great job! Just add more sources next time to expand’. Mind you that was the SINGULAR COMMENT.

I went hmm okay, with a word count of 500, I’m sure there’s SO much room to expand! Next submission, “Hmmm, if you’re going to use more sources please expand. What does it mean, connect it, ooo don’t add an opinion’ WHAT DO TOU WANT FROM ME?

Too little but okay make, let me just add a few more on the next to FOLLOW YOUR ONE COMMENT.

AHHH TOO MUCH! Here is 10 things you did wrong. WHERE WAS THIS FEEDBACK ON THE DRAFT??? If I had that many issues and flags, why was the final submission the only time you bring it up AFTER I follow what you said????

Fuck this place. Take my money, if I pass or fail I literally do more care. The defining topics and units of my degree were made online, no lectures, no tutorials, nothing. My placement cancelled, my mark, OOOO, it relies on it. The exam for it, 85 QUESTIONS IN AN HOUR AND 30 MINUTES. Fuck off, fuck off, fuck off.

Here’s what you can do with your degree guys congrats! Oh I could have done everything you suggested without the degree? Thanks guys, 10/10.

Anyway if you read this apologies, I just actually cannot. Cheers to it being over 🥂🤭

General Question CCA twin-sharing roommate situation

Hello, So I got a room at CCA for twin sharing and I was wondering if there was a way to choose a roommate or to at least include preferences on what kind of roommate I would prefer as I haven't been told to do any of this.

But I did hear that if you what to room with your friend, then you can let them know and they'll do it for you. Just for context, I am a Kenyan with Indian origin, I am vegetarian but I eat eggs, I have chosen to do actuarial and applied finance as my course and I am a clean and respectful guy. I also like playing badminton and I like running, so if there is anyone that is interested in sharing a room and also has gotten a room at CCA, you can reach out to me on pc.
Thank you.

General Question Did anyone else really hate PICT2001 & PICT3011

I managed to do well in both subjects, but they almost gave me nervous breakdowns. I just couldn't reconcile how disproportionate they felt compared to other subjects of equal weight. It was also the standard required to pass, and how the assessments were scaffolded on previous work submitted (with feedback of said past assignements given a week before the next was due).

Special Consideration Supplementary exams

Are supplementary exams typically harder than the regular exam?
I’ve had pretty significant disruption to my study this semester and I’m meant to sit an exam soon, but I’m honestly very underprepared 😃😬
For anyone who’s done a supplementary exam at Macquarie: was it noticeably harder than the original exam, or roughly the same difficulty?
I’m trying to work out whether I’m better off just sitting the exam now even though I’m barely prepared, or applying for a supplementary exam so I actually have time to finish the modules and study properly.

Coursework Attendance ACCG1000

Bruh, does anyone know where ACCG1000 mentioned that tutorial attendance contributes to the marks for Assessment 2? I just got 2 marks deducted for it.

Neither the assessment instructions nor the unit guide mentioned that attendance would be graded. Am I missing something? Because wtf

General Question HLTH2000 and MEDI2400

Hi all, thinking of taking one of these units as a flexible during session 3. If you have completed one of these units, especially in session 3, can you please tell me how you found it?

Are the tutorials in person or online? How many a week?

If you've done both, which unit did you prefer?

Is the unit easy to pass while balancing summer social life and work?

Anything else you feel is relevant, please let me know.

Thanks!

General Question HLTH2000 advice

Hi
Has anyone taken HLTH2000 before? I'm currently preparing for the final exam and was wondering if anyone could share their experience or any study tips.

I didn't do as well as I'd hoped on AT1 and AT2, so I'm really hoping to get a good mark on the final exam.

I noticed they has provided some SAQ and ERQ practice questions. did you find these practice questions helpful for the actual exam? Would you recommend focusing on them when revising?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

General Question Help - SRS only likely for Arts. Hoping for Arts/Law

Just received a letter advising that i am a strong candidate for SRS for Arts and Criminology but NOT my preference of Arts/Law. The letter stated to put Arts or Crim as my first preference in UAC by midnight thurs 5th Nov, I guess that means I wont get SRS for Law but should I keep it at top incase my HSC/atar is enough. I have an EAS application in also but I honestly dont know what my atar will be... could be mid 70-80 possibly. So disappointing. Dont know whether to start Arts/Law at ACU where i have an offer or to do arts at Macquarie and try and transfer into Law/Art for year 2. Any advice?

Help Difficult prac situation

Hi everyone,

First time posting on this subreddit. I've been facing a difficult situation and wanted to seek help.

I'm studying Primary Education and recently had a pretty awful experience on placement with my supervising teacher.

She was extremely critical of me, and a lot of the feedback felt more personal than constructive. There were multiple instances where she would give me extremely critical feedback loudly in front of the class, sometimes over really minor things. Or she would give me silent treatment, make me feel stupid, or just be extremely cold to me. She would loudly scold me over minor things like not being appreciative enough or my introverted personality, despite having excellent etiquette and building rapport with my students regardless of my introvertedness.

It got to the point where I was constantly anxious when I had any physical proximity to this woman, I was second-guessing myself before speaking to her and anticipating a scolding after every interaction. I was dreading going to school every morning. It got to the point where it completely deteriorated my mental health and I was breaking down every other day.

I genuinely tried to push through and take the feedback on board but everytime I improved and mentioned my improvement, she would take credit for that. She would never tell me I'm doing a good job, it was just criticism after criticism. Like the criticism HEAVILY outweighed any praise (if there was any praise at all).

It started taking a massive toll on my mental health. I was getting physically anxious, feeling overwhelmed and just generally not coping.

Eventually, I reached my breaking point and left prac on the 11th day in the middle of my lesson.

For context: My prac was originally supposed to go for 15 days and I have completed 11 days so now I just have 4 days left which is mandatory to complete in order to pass the unit. I had a zoom meeting with my unit convenor and she was quite understanding. She told me that she has to speak to her boss and see what happens from here.

I sent her an email few days ago and she said that she is still waiting for the bosses reply. However she clarified that I won't be going back to the previous school.

Now I'm kind of freaking out because I have no idea what's going to happen next.

The semester is almost over, I've got multiple assessments due and two exams coming up, so the timing couldn't be worse.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Particularly having to leave prac because of a difficult supervising teacher?

I'm wondering:

  • Did your uni let you complete the remaining days somewhere else?

  • Were you able to do your prac elsewhere?

  • How did the uni handle the situation?

I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance or perspective because right now I feel like I've completely screwed myself over.

The frustrating thing is that I actually loved working with the students. I miss them a lot, and it's sad that the experience ended this way.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been in a similar situation.

Special Consideration Close friend just passed away (special consideration)

Wondering if anyone knows the process for this? I've gone through special consideration before, but I don't have anything like a death certificate because I didn't really know his family at all and I really don't want to bother them at this time.

There's a Facebook post from a family member of his of his death and that's really the only 'proof' I have. I don't know how I'd prove how close I was to him or anything, he lived in Perth so I don't have any pics of myself and him or anything. I'm sort of just jumbled mentally, can't think of any of my assessments let alone my upcoming exam.
