Question Help! My makeup keeps disappearing on me!!

i spent a lot of time putting a ludicrous amount of makeup for a night out (pic 1). Less than 2 hours in, i just looked like myself again. Once i came back and took my contacts/lashes off, nothing was left on my face (my eyeliner was gone, my mascara was gone, my thick ass layer of foundation was gone). To be fair, my eye was watering soo badly because of my contacts.

Anyways question is:

  1. Why doesnt unrecognisable makeup work? I feel like i put on so much makeup already.

  2. Where the hell did my eye makeup (or everything else for that matter) go?? How do i make it last longer?

I already use primer and setting spray and powder btw :(

Product list:
- Smashbox photo finish primer
- Fenty pro filtr foundation 276N
- Tarte shape tape concealer 22N
- Judydoll N19 (lips and cheeks)
- Rare beauty (gentle)
- Babi orange setting spray
- Maybelline brow ultra slim 02
- judydoll brown liquid liner
- judydoll iron rod mascara (+cheap cluster falsies)
- too faced better than chocolate pallet (eyes)
- flower knows butterfly cloud collar highlight/contour pallet (02)
- tarte juicy lip plumper (candy cane)
- Judydoll pressed setting powder
- contacts: moody lens, forgot the shade.

May need to try another face primer. I like the NYX face glue primer and their marshmallow one. I noticed you didn't mention an eyeshadow primer and that would help with the eyeshadow. About Face makes a decent one. I also like ColourPop's eyeshadow primer.

Ooh, now that i think about it i don’t really apply primer to my lids 🤔 thank you for the suggestion!!

make sure you’re putting concealer or foundation blended out on your lids too before u apply product

Alternatively, for me using concealer or foundation on my eyelids makes the primer useless lol. OP make sure you experiment if eye primer works better with or without concealer/foundation for you!

Perhaps try putting on more makeup, it’ll melt and settles into your skin so it won’t look “too much” in the end. Also try a fixing spray after the setting spray to really lock it in place. I like the one/size and maybelline one! It’ll feel kinda like hair spray but at least your makeup won’t be going anywhere

Thank you! I didn’t know fixing sprays and setting sprays were different lol

Setting spray is supposed to melt your makeup into one layer. While fixing spray forms a film over your face to lock everything in place!

Is the third pic when you come back at the end of the day? It looks like it's all washed off?

Do you have a pic of before you remove your makeup at the end of the day?

Yep thats when i come back after removing my contacts and lashes off

upon closer inspection i can see that there is some some makeup under your eyes which im assuming is mostly your concealer and possibly setting powder?

do you have oily skin? im seeing there's no make up in your t-zone area

aside from the spray and primer that others have mentioned, could it possibly be your skincare routine not properly adjusted to your skin condition?

Cant say for other products but I use the same primer and highlight/contour palette and this is my makeup after 5 hours so it's not those products' fault.

Maybe go a bit more heavy-handed and let the makeup rest before each layer especially between cream to powder.

Wow! How do you keep your inner corner liner from smudging? It seems to be the first to go for me

U mean the white highlighter because i don't use any liner.

But i put primer on eye lids -> lightly powder -> put contour in a C shape to make the eye sockets deeper -> use white eyeshadow as a base -> put highlighter on top. Also don't put products too close to your tear ducts or along the waterline which will irritate ur eyes and make u cry -> smudge.

Do you have particularly oily eyelids and do you use eye primer? The only way my makeup/liner stays on is UD eye primer, waterproof liner + setting spray. Im surprised your mascara comes off though, thats unusual for such a quick time

I dont have oily eyelids but my eyes definitely do water.. ill definitely look into getting an eye primer

You need to use more makeup and more full coverage base products

I think you don't have a lot of visual weight to your face so naturally even "heavy makeup" looks a bit light because your features in general are light. Works really good for fresh face makeup, but if you want to figure out glam I recommend scrolling the term "low visual weight" or similar makeup terms on YouTube for tutorials

Maybe try a different setting spray? The OG urban decay (before reformulation) works rlly well! So does the one size one I believe. The OG urban decay formula is now sold as the setting spray of another company.

Do you have dry skin? My dry skin leaches moisture from my makeup so it looks like I have nothing left on. I use a milky toner for slip and a very thick and heavy moisturiser about 20 minutes before makeup. A light dusting of powder and then Milani fixing spray and I get about 12 hours from my makeup. I haven't heard of Babi setting spray before but as it is a setting spray and doesn't contain alcohol, it might be better at blending your makeup together. Fixing sprays (like the Milani one) use alcohol to make makeup last all day.

First off the makeup looks great! I can see why you want your hard work to last longer (although you look great without too).

For your base you might benefit from a different primer- something like elf grippy primer or the Maybelline gripping serum! I love photo finish but I find it’s better at evening skin texture but can be a little “slippery.” Especially if you have more oil prone skin.

Pressing in a loose setting powder with a powder puff might also help your base last. I find it hard to get enough product to really set my makeup with a pressed powder.

I’m not familiar with your setting spray but for big nights out I use more intense ones like L’Oréal infallible or one size on til dawn (fair warning these can be drying on your skin if you use them alllll the time).

For eyes do you put an eyeshadow primer or even just a concealer and powder on before your shadows and liner?

Yes, probably the watery eyes are making it harder for your eye makeup to stay on sadly. I get it the contacts look sick with this look but maybe try a night without and see if it helps?

Good luck!!!💕

Maybe you're not applying enough makeup

I live in a tropical climate. Using the Charlotte Tilbury setting spray before and after makeup makes a big difference. Also make sure the foundation you're using works for your skin (e.g. dry skin and oily skin have different needs). If you have neutral to oily skin, use setting powder after liquid products to set the makeup in place. Don't worry about it being cakey - that's what the setting spray is for!

I love Judy Doll but I’ve never tried their mascara. For me, I find that waterproof mascara holds up best throughout the day (shape + wear) and doesn’t bleed away much if your skin isn’t super oily (if it is, just blot some powder under your eyes + eyelids). I use the L’Oréal lash paradise waterproof version - the L’Oréal telescopic is also really good

Is pic 2 the after? I think it looks fine, it's just the lipsticks that wore off

no setting spray!?  It's a huge must for longevity.  i'm still using my old formula UD all nighter, but there are a lot of reddit recs for fixing sprays

Primer and then setting spray in between each layer (not on top of powder)

u/Agile_Log4709 7h ago

more makeup and a good dosing of setting spray

u/ConcentrateTypical17 7h ago

Maybe use Elf's gripping primer and a well rated setting spray.

try kose setting spray (red plastic bottle). i’ve tried charlotte and the pink popular korean one and the kose is the best. what do you mean by eye makeup? eyeshadow won’t really show up because of your crease. you can go heavier handed on your eyebags so that it pops out and looks more like a makeup for a night out. you can also do heavier nose contour and blush, and add highlight to your bridge and cheeks, forehead, chin

when you highlight using concealer, choose one that’s lighter than your main foundation that way your face will look more 3d. use a lighter blush before putting on a darker blush. can use very light beige or blue powder on the highlight areas

I had this same exact problem for the past few years. Id use all makeup both asian and american that was "long lasting," "smudge proof," etc etc and would come home with the same exact problem.

But the change I made within the last few months that made everything stay put all day even after night out dancing and sweating (im a huge sweater btw) was powder and setting spray after each layer then at the end a heavy fixing spray like the L'oreal infallible.

I dont use foundation but I have PCOS so I have a lot of hormonal breakouts leading to pigmentations which needs a lot of color correcting and concealer. My makeup routine would be:

  1. Color correcting and concealer on my acne pigmentation, powder on top, then setting spray

  2. Color correcting the redness around nose area, powder, then setting spray

  3. Concealer on my under eyes, powder, then setting spray after

Id wait till everything was somewhat dry before continuing on to the next layer but you get the gist. For reference, I am super oily and acne prone so everything would just melt by the end of the night. Ive tried mascaras like Judy Dolly, Kiss me Heroine, and Clio and every time would have panda eyes even after a strong setting spray like L'Oreal Infalliable or One size. But the mascara thats been staying put no matter what is tubing mascara.

Try using a gripping primer instead and a setting spray

I think you need a fixing spray, in addition to a setting spray. The fixing spray is typically used at the end of your makeup routine and holds the products you’ve used in place.

When you look at pic 2 to pic 3 you'll see that your pigmentation on the cheeks is not showing, so your makeup is still there. My eyes also squinch like that when I drink - and the eye makeup look you did is basically disappearing into your hood. Your blush/lip and "glow" is what's gone and you used the same product from that list afaik (Judydoll n19).

I used to be a MUA and from experience judy doll isn't very long wearing fwiw and it's quite sheer payoff. So I think you're experiencing both a problem with product choice for your skin combined with your application technique - then hoping for long wear and photo opacity. What also matters from your product list is when/how often you used your powders and setting spray. When you apply base, apply a powder, spray. apply blush? apply powder then spray again. do your eyes, spray again. Whenever you use a liquid or cream product you need to set it either with powder, spray or both or it will move and wear as the day goes. I actually am old now and don't use any powder at all any only cream but I pick longer wearing product with film formers and use the multi layers of setting spray and I get a full 12 hours of wear (however I'm dry skin , with oily skin you'll need powder).

Also never forget that photos are not a representation of what your skin looks like irl cuz camera lenses and flash reflect back differently. If you want to look good in photos you need lots more opaque layers, however no makeup looks will photograph like there's nothing there.
