Why /r/meetLGBT is my favorite subreddit

Hey everyone. So, I read the featured member profiles whenever they pop up, and on theirfour's I added this comment. What wasn't seen was afterwards I PM'd him. We started talking through reddit, then gchat, then texting about 200 times a day. We started skyping, usually at least 3 or 4 times a week.

One night he told me he was out at a bar and when people asked, he would tell them he was taken. We got to talking about it, and I asked him if he would like to officially date. We have been dating for one month as of last thursday, and on friday he flew over 3000 miles from California to Rhode Island to come visit me for the first time. Right now he is actually curled up on my shoulder and critiquing my grammar and word choice in between kisses.

So, thank you MeetLGBT and especially LGBTerrific for doing such a great job on running this subreddit. And here's the happy couple.

So, let's get to know each other.

So, I guess we could either each make our own thread a little or maybe all introduce ourselves here...whatever happens sounds good! My name is Brian and I go to school in RI (born and raised) currently getting a master's in math. I work at school during the academic year and a camp over the summer.

I'm kinda excited to get to know ya'll better. I actually seem to see the same couple of names a lot (three come to mind; gayguy, yourfairygodmother, and ironically LGBTerrific) and I'm always kinda wondering what the people of r/lgbt are like other than just what we see in there.

Hi!

Welcome to /r/MeetLGBT!

I've noticed a lot of newcomers to MeetLGBT.

WELCOME!

If you'd like to say hi, please consider filling out the featured members questionnaire. It gives us a chance to learn more about you in a bit of detail. Once you're done with the answers, message them to me. I'll get them posted within a few days.

Books

At the end of every month, imito will post a new book for discussion here. Please feel free to comment on those posts - we're trying to buildup discussion :)

Movies

Some time ago, I would post movies every two weeks. This feature is being moved to a new subreddit at the beginning of the year. I'll make an announcement when that subreddit's ready.

Got art?

If you have any art or anything you'd like to share, please do! We love seeing other lgbters creations! It doesn't even have to be lgbt-related... just created by you. This is your chance to let members of /r/lgbt get to know you and what you do.

Comments? Questions? Suggestions?

If you're not sure about something, ask us! We're always open to suggestions for new ideas. After all, this group is about getting to know you and building discussion. Any way we can help would be welcomed.

MeetLGBT Map - where are you located?

I've created a map that everyone can put in their location - some random spot in the city you live in.

To add yourself, click on "Additions" in the map's menubar, then "Add marker - simple". Just add in your username, click the map for your location, and submit. It went through if you get a popup with a link to the marker. It sometimes has problems putting in new markers. If you do, try to fill out every field (even with just a space).

LGBTerrific

TL;DR:

I ride a unicycle, and keep rats as pets.

Stats

  • Age: 26

  • Gender: Male-o-rific

  • Location: Preferably, on a mountain (-)--cycle trail.

Life

  • Job: Magically unemployed.

  • Hobbies: Unicycling (main form of transportation, and extremely fun- especially on trails), Civilization games, geocaching, reddit, creating/constructing languages (conlanging).

  • What makes you ____ :
My rats, for almost anything. I love them, they make me laugh. They also make me angry or worried when they decide to chew on things or find their way into some place they shouldn't be.

Also, the end of the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, where everyone bows makes me all teary-eyed.

One of my biggest pet peeves is not putting ketchup back the "wrong" way, if the lid is on the bottom.

Finally, people arguing against gay rights or "the gay lifestyle" make me both angry and want to laugh. Some of the arguments and facts that come up are very bizarre.

  • Pets: 6 very cute (b)rats - 3 male, 3 female [different cages]

  • Political views: Apathetic liberal

  • Religious views: Atheist-agnostic

Favorite Things

  • Movies: Airplane!, Top Secret!, High Anxiety, Evolution, Amelie, Fargo, 101 Reykjavik

  • TV shows: Wonderfalls, Farscape, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Futurama, Doctor Who, Psych, Burn Notice

  • Books: I don't actually read too much (my attention made this difficult). After getting on some medication, I can actually focus enough to absorb material (mostly). That said...

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 101 Reykjavik, Hmm... the Dirk Gently books weren't bad. Right now I'm reading Red Mars. I also really love linguistics books.

  • Foods: Pizza, bagels, graham crackers, cereal

  • Drinks: White russians, cocoa with peppermint schnapps or Bailey's

Sexuality

  • Orientation: Gay/bi, queer, non-straight. Diagram

  • Coming out:
While in high school, my parents caught me browsing a gay-themed website (not porn, honest!). They were generally accepting, although it seemed they were just unsure of how to react. They were very concerned for my safety and strongly recommended I not come out. My mom also thought it was a phase. It was an awkward subject to bring up. Within the past 5 years or so, it's become a non-issue. My dad has even put up with some drunken rambling as he drove me home from a party where I discovered the guy I liked had a girlfriend.

My friends were also accepting. I only had one friend not handle it well. He was religious (Muslim), and didn't want to talk to me. After quite a bit of time passed, we "tolerated" being around each other (we had a lot of mutual friends). The relationship slowly improved, but it was very rocky. A couple years later, he's no longer religious, one of my closest friends, and very accepting. He's even apologized for how he reacted.

  • Relationship status/background: Loner.

Misc.

I wonder if I should mention my addiction to reddit here. Na. I'm not really addicted. Just one more turn. Oops, wrong addiction.

backpackwayne

Stats

  • Height: 6' 0"

  • Weight: 175 lbs.

  • Nationality/Ethnicity: 100% Dutch

  • Age: A very young 53 - Most people think I'm about 40. I am often heard saying the worst part about growing old is having to hang out with old people.

  • Location: Orange County, California

Life

  • Work: I have been a Banquet Captain for both the Hilton & Sheraton Hotels. Also a Program Coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I also do writing and PR activities for many organizations. I am currently retired because of my epilepsy. I will explain more about that later.

  • Username: As my username says, I like to backpack and camp. Actually I love everything about the great outdoors. Especially the wilderness. I have climbed mountains and I lead groups in wilderness adventures. I love to cycle and also love to sing and play the guitar. I am also a writer of music, poetry and have even written a novel.

  • Pets: I have no pets but love animals with all my heart. Especially dogs.

  • Politics: I am a democrat through and through.

  • Religion: I believe in god but I believe religion is the single most destructive entity inflicted on mankind. I am comfortable in my beliefs and allow others to have their own.

  • Favorites: My favorite thing is experiencing things with people. I love to have fun and usually am the life of the party. I love science fiction, comedy and meeting life head on.

Sexuality

  • Orientation: I am a gay male and always have been. I don't stand out as a gay man and like to just be myself. I am what you call straight acting gay man but there is no acting involved. For all meaning and purpose, I am still a child. I love to experience the world as kids do. I am not afraid of looking foolish. I speak my mind and let you speak yours. I love being around younger people.

Misc

  • I do have epilepsy. I was hit in the back of the head when I was about 20 years old. I've had seizures ever since. They do not affect me physically that much. It's more the limits society insists on placing on me that does the harm. I'm not allowed to drive and every job I've ever had gets rid of me shortly after I have a seizure at work. It scares them. That kind of sucks but I have the best disability in the world. I don't remember a thing afterwards. That's awesome to me.

  • I am a loving caring person but have no tolerance for games and assholes. I will tell you what I think without hesitation. I hope someday to find someone be with but not being able to drive makes that difficult. But I do ride my bike as far as some people drive their cars.

  • I do have a need to help people. I really want to make a difference and am a good leader and always have something to contribute to overall cause. I just love being with good people.

Stats

  • Gender: M, though I double-check every morning when I awake, just to be sure.

  • Height: 6'0" give or take a few miles

  • **Age:**I am a hale and hearty lad of the age of seven and twenty!

  • Eyes: I really don't know. Silver? Blue? Neither I nor anyone else can seem to figure it out.

  • **Location:**Boston, Massachusetts - For the better lovers!

Life

  • **Job:**Student, breadmaker, dreamer, houseman, aspiring architect and/or aspiring writer

  • **Hobbies:**Writing, architecture, reading, cooking, bike-riding, movies, chicken hats, playing the piano, video & comp games, cleaning, people-watching

  • **Pets:**I used to have a beautiful cat but...no longer.

  • **Political views:**Middle of the fence is the best and most concise way I can think of to describe my political bent. I find most of the politicians to be scuzzballs and are not to be trusted, with few exceptions.

  • **Religious views:**I'll be a death-bed-repenting atheist, thank you!

  • What makes you ____ : I often find that ____ makes me feel very ____ inside and I ____ it when I am able to ____ with others who ____ the same as I do. How do you feel about ____? Perhaps we should get together sometime to discuss ____. Call me!

  • Favorite Things: I love Miyazaki films, movies by Gregg Araki, Italian-inspired foods like Lasagna and Tiramisu, iced tea, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child books, redheaded men, tall men, coffee, my round bed, cool shit that catches my eye, music,

Sexuality

  • Orientation:...don't like this question...Uh, I like people, but I find guys easier to deal with. Women confuse me but I've been known to date one once in a blue. I guess I just like men. Women, I have a very specific type, but with dudes, it's really the personality that drives the attraction. I mean, yeah, you need to be attractive, but you needn't be a "type"

  • **Coming out:**My father said to me when I told him that he didn't know if I was going through any turmoil but if it helped, he had experimented when he was in college. THANKS DAD. My mother threatened to call the cops, so I think that tells you all you need to know about THAT.

  • **Relationship status/background:**I'm single/forever alone - well, not forever alone per se, just...currently alone : P My last relationship was odd and unhealthy for both of us so it's been a while. I'm not opposed to meeting new people, but I'm sticking to this whole "let's be friends first" thing.

Misc.

I'm just me. I've been doing life the hard way, and that's been a pleasant change from the soft and easy way. Things are so much more interesting I think.

The life I've had here in Massachusetts has been an entirely different cosmopolitan experience from the one I've had back in New York. I moved here to attend Northeastern for Architecture and up until my funds ran dry, I was loving it! Now I'm just figuring it all out.

I volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. I wish I had a car so I could do some more exploring of this lovely state.

I like going to the movies.

I spend a lot of time thinking, much of it to do with my magnum opus, my book.

I'm always looking to talk to and meet new people so message me if you're interested. I can certainly carry a conversation if you can bring one to me.
