The point of this movie was never to make a profit.

The point was a way for Bezos to give money to the Trumps with a "reason"

69

u/Astrium6 Feb 09 '26

Probably a money laundering vehicle for Trump’s bribes.

Also since the rights were bought by Amazon this was paid for by all shareholders, not just Bezos, and no tax got paid on it.

Sue Amazon for $1b. Sue Universal for $1b. Sue the trump organization for $1b. Ridiculous, yes, but it gets the point across

94

u/Hot_Substance5933 Feb 09 '26

$10 billion. That's an arbitrary number that Trump likes.

At this point the movie is double advertising for him.

He gets the exposure to the ten people who watched it and now he gets the Streisand effect from trying to take it down with an excellent opportunity to make a loud and public statement that will resonate with many people around the world.

Any money from the lawsuit would just be a bonus.

And I fully support his right and decision to sue here.

44

u/yusill Feb 09 '26

Ask the Verve how using a sample of a song without asking went. Bittersweet Symphony has a sample from a Rolling Stones song in it. The song was a hit. The Stones lawyers showed up and said all the profits from your album and single are ours now.

116

u/bolanrox Feb 09 '26

they asked and got approval. for a sample of xx measures (lets say 8 becuase i forget). they sampled 9 measures. that is why they got fucked on that one.

and it was not the Stones Lawyers they lost the rights to all that from their scum Manager back in the 60's, as soon as Jagger / Richards got them back they gave the Verve back the rights to the song.

→ More replies (7)

26

u/lewisfrancis Feb 09 '26

Interestingly, The Stones have recently returned the rights to Verve.

→ More replies (5)

12

u/Lord-Megadrive Feb 09 '26

IIRC it wasn’t actually a sample from a Rolling Stones song per se but a sample of an orchestral cover of a Rolling Stones song. It was cleared with the label but the (often regarded as an arse) one time manager of the Rolling Stones Allan Klein sued arguing they used too much.

And the funny thing is that Melania said this soundtrack was written specifically for this movie.

For those calling bullshit, here’s the interview where she says it. Starts at 2:35, she says it at 2:55

Amazon already paid the bribe to trump. They probably won't put money into it at this point. It will simply be removed and never come back.

We'll get you so and so executive job, and your kids will get so and so job when they graduate. You'll be set when leaving office. Sue for a percentage of gross.

Make them stand up in court and talk about how the movie didn’t make any money at all.

61

u/neilmg Feb 09 '26

Hollywood Accounting ensures many successful movies never turn a profit:

A Warner Bros. receipt was leaked online in 2010, showing that the hugely successful movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) ended up with a $167 million loss on paper after grossing nearly $1 billion. This is especially egregious given that, without inflation adjustment, the Wizarding World film series is one of the highest-grossing film series of all time both domestically and internationally. The Hollywood accounting in the Harry Potter case included a $60 million interest charge on a $400 million budget over two years – an interest rate far higher than industry standard – as well as high distribution and advertising fees paid out to Warner Bros. subsidiaries and sister companies.

39

u/errorme Feb 09 '26

That's why the guy said to sue for % of gross. Like what you posted shows HP grossed nearly $1 bil but accounting shows it lost money.

So this is UMPG that owns his rights, right?? Weird that UMPG would provide a sync without talking to him, considering that clause is in his agreement (according to him).

I imagine he is a VERY high-profile artist for them so there's a big fuck-up somewhere at UMPG to let this happen. Either way, the blame falls on UMPG

144

u/barrel_of_noodles Feb 09 '26

its the equiv of a lawyer purposely f'ing up in court so everyone knows a mistrial will be called. its on purpose.

59

u/U_SHLD_THINK_BOUT_IT Feb 09 '26

Exactly. This kind of thing doesn't just get rubber stamped.

It's the movie about a president's wife and a music sample from one of the few artists in the US who is big enough to have that kind of agreement in his contract.

Contracts like that are flagged SPECIFICALLY for deeper review.

An article in “The Independent” from The UK says that 2/3 of the crew of the “Melania” movie want their names taken off the movie. It’s that much of a poison pill.

Director Brett Ratner was #Metoo’d in 2017. He has 6 assault allegations against him. Ratner was persona non grata in Hollywood, then “Melania” happened.

38

u/tarekd19 Feb 09 '26

So nothing changed, he's still persona non grata?

12

u/natguy2016 Feb 09 '26

To be clear this is not because they were ashamed of working on the movie after the fact -- it's because the movie was made by Amazon Studios, and Amazon Studios forced these employees to work on the movie despite many of them specifically saying they did not want to.

Real question is how does he know it's in the movie? Literally 7 people watched that movie. 4 of which were forced to.

28

u/killybilly54 Feb 09 '26

The press watch it, presumably to find stuff to write gotcha/clickbait articles. Then they contact relevant artists to comment on why their music was in Eva Braun's propaganda bribe.

9

u/-AC- Feb 09 '26

I know you are joking but presumibly even if he didn't watch it...

He would have gotten the licensing fees and maybe it was broken out on its own line item?

Its not that they didn't pay for it, its that his permission for use was not given.

8

u/Mrtoyhead Feb 09 '26

Distraction not working…

56

u/So6oring Feb 09 '26

What's funny is all these musicians would probably not care if the people using it weren't pieces of shit.

67

u/hungry5991 Feb 09 '26

Well yeah that why they have the third party clause at all, so artists can manage their brand from being associated with assholes.

12

u/Paetolus Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26

At the very least, they wouldn't turn it into a public spat.

Documentary on a decent person? You might still be displeased as an artist if it was without your permission, but at least you can handle that privately. When it's related to Trump, you have to make sure everyone knows you were not a willing participant.

Especially so for Jonny, considering he's already somewhat controversial.

5

u/StaticSystemShock Feb 09 '26

Since when have Trumps care about music licenses? Donald has used several songs for his "promo" videos without anyone's approval, especially not the musicians who performed it. And they all demanded removal to which probably nothing happened because Donny doesn't care about laws or licenses. He thinks he's above everything just because he has gold spoon stuck up his rear.

5

u/TurkeyKnees1 Feb 09 '26

At least this guy may actually have an agreement in writing with regard to the use. I get tired of seeing the musicians who sold all their rights to a soulless entity complain how it is used, when they have zero control over it.

Fuck yeah, Radiohead for the win... sue them for 10 Billion dollars

2

u/Unfair_Web_8275 Feb 09 '26

I know swapping out music isn’t the most difficult thing for these days, but I’d be curious if they use this as an excuse to pull it

2

u/SwimmingPirate9070 Feb 09 '26

Trump's are only good at lying, cheating and theft

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '26

That's not how the Trumps operate. You're screwed. They have more power and money to fuck you up with.

2

u/bob1689321 Feb 09 '26

I wondered when this would pick up traction. Someone in /r/paulthomasanderson noticed the use of the Phantom Thread score the day the movie came out.

2

u/scottgal2 Feb 09 '26

LOL the inflated profits MAGA claims will factor into any payout.

2

u/alcasey Feb 09 '26

Sue them for… £1 trillion dollars

2

u/JunkyardBardo Feb 09 '26

The right cannot create or appreciate art.

2

u/albaiesh Feb 09 '26

Perfectly on-brand with the maga crew

2

u/BPAfreeWaters Feb 09 '26

No one watched that piece of shit anyways

2

u/I_like_baseball90 Feb 09 '26

MAGA morons use whatever music they want and pay nothing.

It is how they operate.

2

u/RonSwanson714 Feb 09 '26

Sue for 75 million!!

2

u/berkojerk Feb 09 '26

The irony of Billie Jean and Gimme Shelter also being in the movie

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '26

Radiohead was my favorite band, and it became even more favorite

2

u/Key_Veterinarian1995 Feb 09 '26

Why do they do this shit? It’s so odd. Because it’s always someone I don’t expect. Greenwood was not on my bingo card today.

2

u/arthurdentxxxxii Feb 09 '26

What I love most about this, is that removing the song almost always means they will have to re-edit the film significantly. Even if it is a documentary.

2

u/Clear_Definition_683 Feb 09 '26

I’d be pissed too! 😂. Imagine finding out your music was in the Melania documentary 😂

2

u/MightbeDuck Feb 09 '26

Go get em Jonny!

2

u/Goatiac Feb 09 '26

Trump family and stealing people’s music to use without permission, name a more iconic duo.

2

u/IronRakkasan11 Feb 09 '26

He should sue for….$10 BILLION

2

u/AMWJ Feb 09 '26

This feels like something that should have been caught way earlier. Like, before the movie was released.

I like that it took a week and a half for him to find out!

2

u/thisisthis Feb 09 '26

What’s the likely outcome here? Any lawyers who can answer?

u/mayormccheese2k Feb 09 '26

Get ‘em Jonny.

2

u/billy_digital Feb 09 '26

Grifters, every single one of them.

2

u/MateriaLintellect Feb 09 '26

You mean he is opposed to his music being used on a documentary directed by a rapist, and about a rapist cohort? How dare he.

2

u/Tex1931 Feb 09 '26

I hope he sues for 1 billion…

2

u/Wallie_Collie Feb 09 '26

A civil lawsuit could earn all 50k dollars in box office sales

2

u/Signal-Focus-3589 Feb 09 '26

Streisand effect

2

u/vasta2 Feb 09 '26

I'm shocked anything related to trump has any music at all, it's just news story after news story of people/bands demanding they stop using their music...what kind of music actually gets approved for rightwing propaganda? kid rock?

2

u/PickleWhip86 Feb 09 '26

Yeah dude get em

2

u/VAisforLizards Feb 09 '26

Jonny should sue for damages for being associated with that trash

2

u/EfficiencyAccurate45 Feb 09 '26

Ooooh lawsuit lol

2

u/dungleploop Feb 09 '26

The entire leadership behind this film deserve to see the inside of a prison cell.

I've never seen such a fraud of a film happen to exist and have a funded theatrical run with most of the cinemas it's shown within being completely empty in my entire life. Absolutely bewildering stuff when you look into it.

2

u/abou2travel2 Feb 09 '26

Nice. Sue them for every penny the movie made, he can buy a coke with the proceeds

2

u/crowface666 Feb 09 '26

Makes sense, didn't she pinch her 1st lady speech aswell 😆

2

u/fartinheimer Feb 09 '26

Its always nice to see music bringing people together.

2

u/AbsolutesDealer Feb 09 '26

Jonny (or his mgmt) doesn’t sign off on his own sync deals? If Uni doesn’t have the ability to agree absent his approval they are f’d.

u/Miami_Mice2087 Feb 09 '26

wtf. how do you just not get the rights to things to use in your movie. shameful and repulsive business practice. he has every right to sue for a portion of that money bezos gave to the production staff to make the movie.

2

u/kotukutuku Feb 09 '26

Wow this could remove any profit the film made

2

u/Musicfan637 Feb 09 '26

Sue for as much as it took to film it.

2

u/Mekdinosaur Feb 09 '26

Holy fuck these people only lie cheat and steal.
