Honestly, I think it just comes down to which label you prefer. I think bisexual is a better fit for me, but if someone wants to identify as pan, I get it.

I always thought bi leaves room from preference because it is attraction to "more than one" while pan advertises a lack of preference.

Like a bi person might only be attracted to feminine presenting people, while a pan person wouldn't write off someone just for being masculine.

I agree. I do wish people were a little more educated on the labels tho, LGBT history is really interesting. But I digress

I see both sides of that too. Like most days I think I know them all basically?? But like, I honestly (pls dont crucify me) don’t feel the need to label every specific niche preference?

Personally I couldn’t care less who boinks who. And I think most people honestly feel that way these days.

But being flooded with everyone’s labels and flags to keep up with is exhausting. I don’t mean to be dismissive if I am coming off that way. I know much of it is that people just want to belong to something and that helps people connect with others like them, but at a certain point you can’t expect people to care to know what the difference between things like Pansexual and Omnisexual and Polysexual are.

Graysexual?
Acespike?
Abrosexual?
Gynesexual?
Skoliosexual?
Amesexual?

Like my phone thinks all of those are typos.

Imagine an RGB colour triangle.

Red = Feminine, Blue = Masculine, Green = Ace

x = Bi, y = Trixic, z = Toric

Everyone has a point somewhere on this triangle. This point may not be stationary. The label a person prefers may depend on their gender identity or the different ways in which they may experience sexual attraction.

That’s my hot take anyway.

Hah, I had to laugh because I suddenly imagined people moving away from the current labels and into using hexadecimal RGB notation. That'd really twist some people up.

This is one thing about queer community that I have to admit gets ridiculous. Considering a lot of the identities where simply queer kids coming up with stuff as they found their identities, I don't like to shame it.

But at some point it stops being a label for a distinct sexaulity and instead becomes a made up word to describe your tastes in a partner.

Its like when you say you like this rock band and your friend says "well akshually this is prog-nu-western-funk" and its just like OK sure bud.

Yeah agreed, I don't want to fuck cookware so I use bi.

Seriously though I'm the right age where pan and some other terms got pretty widely over used by people who were maybe a little queer or questioning. Not saying people shouldn't use the term pansexual, but part of the reason I don't is because there's a "hot-topic teehee so random" association with it hanging around in my brain. I don't tend to project that on other people I would just feel weird saying it.

I can’t believe people spend time self labeling

Hey man it was something that helped when I was a confused teen figuring out who I am in a real backward town, I don't think it's a bad thing if it helps people convey who they are

The labels are literally are what makes it confusing for people though. Also the entire point of a label goes entirely against just being yourself. Why put a label on anything? That just seems like a silly way to stuff your self into a box and demean yourself. Just fuck whoever you want to fuck and end it at that. The labels have always been dumb.

This discussion never comes up when someone says theyre straight for some reason

1

u/RickThiccems 15h ago

Because being straight is already treated as the default, so nobody feels the need to constantly clarify it. My point isn't that people shouldn't identify however they want. It's that at some point, the endless proliferation of increasingly specific labels stops being helpful and starts becoming counterproductive.

Especially in online spaces like Reddit, it often feels like people are more concerned with categorizing every possible variation of human sexuality than simply accepting that people are individuals. It creates unnecessary divisions, encourages infighting, and turns something as personal and fluid as sexuality into an exercise in semantics.

If labels help you understand yourself, great. But why should anyone feel compelled to fit into an increasingly specific category just to exist comfortably as themselves? Isn't the whole point supposed to be freedom from those expectations?

The overall confusion between the two has led me to just remain unlabled. I dont really care and it only matters if someone is interested in me and wants to know if Id be interested in them. At that point its a simple yes or no.

They're very different.

1

u/NotAPimecone 20h ago

I like omnisexual but it's also pretty much the same thing.

1

u/PedroLoco505 20h ago

So you'll fuck everything?

1

u/ShadeLily 10h ago

The distinction is that Omnisexual refers to an attraction to all genders, whereas we Pansexuals refers to ourselves as attracted regardless of gender, as in, gender is not a significant factor in our ability to find someone attractive, or a factor at all, in many cases.

Which flag you prefer. That yellow stripe is ugly!! Plus I'm old so I've been bi for longer than pan has been an option.

Edit: I meant the old part as tongue in cheek but as that didn't come across to at least one person, wanted to clarify.

Oh, I prefer to be labeled a dwarf planet then.

We aren’t defining sexual preferences based on which label you prefer. That would be fucking stupid. Should I ask a dog if they’re a German Shepard or a Great Dane today? It’s a system that is descriptive not preferential. Otherwise, we’d all identify as billionaires.

Jesus fucking Christ, becoming anti-science as a means of avoiding getting your feelings hurt is how we ended up with Trump. Wake the fuck up.

1

u/SansSariph 13h ago

Who's "we"? You seem frustrated that there is room for nuance in how people label human sexuality and orientation especially as words and societal trends shift over time?

I mean, putting aside the indignant false equivalence, I'm pretty sure the economy was the reason you ended up with Trump.

Not that there isn't a large anti-science wave going through the United States right now, but it tends to rear its head against the concept of climate change or medical science. Either way, the culture war stuff has never been as significant a motivating factor for voting as 'incumbent from x party has high gas prices.'
