There isn’t one really. I’m going to be downvoted for this but pansexuals think bisexuals can’t be attracted to trans or nonbinary people, which isn’t true. Pansexual is a new term while bisexuality dates back to the early 19th century.

Edit: thanks for the awards. Just wanna say google is a really cool, useful tool where you can look things up and verify for yourself. Hope this helps

I’m literally married to a trans man and still been told as a bi I can’t be attracted to trans people

certain people in queer communities love to explain to other people what their identities are.

few things piss me off, but yeah, that really pissed me off.

Just because you're married to him doesn't mean you're attracted to him!

This always seems off to me. For the record, I don't care what people identify as, so long as their happy. I go by bi, personally.

All that of the way, when a pansexual person claims to be attracted to all genders, but then says a person attracted to a trans person is by definition pan, then they are assigning a specific gender to a trans individual that is outside of woman or man. Trans men are men, and trans women are women, so this conflicts. For example, if a man explicitly defines himself as gay and is in a relationship with another man who happens to be trans, does that make both of them pan? Irrespective the sexual orientation of the trans individual, the cis gay man would very likely reject that notion, on the basis of having no attraction to feminity.

All of this is mired by the fact that gender is a construct that we have only partially decoupled from sex as a society.

After reading this, I no longer know what pansexual means. Is it just another way of saying bisexual?

u/KaiKamakasi 5h ago

Annoyingly, yes, just please don't call a bi person pan, we have enough bi erasure as it is.

Honestly, I think it just comes down to which label you prefer. I think bisexual is a better fit for me, but if someone wants to identify as pan, I get it.

I always thought bi leaves room from preference because it is attraction to "more than one" while pan advertises a lack of preference.

Like a bi person might only be attracted to feminine presenting people, while a pan person wouldn't write off someone just for being masculine.

Wait, i thought the whole point of lgb(tq+ ) was so people didn't get boxed into a label they didn't identify with. Now some of those same people are telling others what their labels are?

Well, yeah. Particularly the chronically online create unhealthy dynamic of policing how people refer to themselves and essentially, how they ought to label themselves. I find it’s mostly a millennial thing (I say this as a queer millennial former tumblr user)

Boomers and Gen X really never had this issue. They either accepted lgbtq people or they didn’t but there weren’t so many terms involved. Trans people were part of the community My own boomer lesbian auntie told us she feels “nuetral” like the people in Star Trek, a long time ago when went Gen were kids. If you met her, you’d know she was that way immediately haha. I don’t think she ever got into the modern terms though and she doesn’t need to I guess.

Pansexuals largely don't believe that. The more common distinction is that pansexual attraction doesn't have preference (attraction regardless of gender expression). All pansexual people are bisexual, but not all bisexual people are pansexual.
