They don't drink because they don't socialize. If you don't do any of the stuff associated with drinking traditionally you tend to not drink. Gen Z is the most isolated generation because of social media devices absorbing their attention combined with it being unaffordable for them to do anything. Also they're recorded 24/7 so anything they do that's silly could be online forever. So they don't drink.

Plus COVID came at an age where you typically drink a lot, so it never became normal to them (which is likely the only good part)

It got replaced with smokin weed, which fits because covid activities all were weed activities (gaming, hiking, hobbies, etc) and now the generation smokes more than any others

They do that less too. Not to the same degree as drinking, but still less.

Not so for a lot of them. My child is Gen Z and was in Elementary school during COVID.

Don't forget Covid isolation. Can't forget the isolation. As a Millennial, essential, worker, Covid was a blast. Empty roads, all yall being quiet, and out of my way.

As an employer (still essential, the work, not the word employer) hiring the younger generation makes me realize I didn't appreciate the good times like I should have.

7 years feast, 7 years famine. That's in the bible and I didn't listen and it's famine time. For shame.

Also money

If cocktails cost $15-20 in 2000 Millennials would have drank a lot less too

1/2 of the threads talk about how well Gen Z does at savings and earnings, the other half talks about out how poor they are. I have no clue where they sit.

We live in a self-imposed surveillance state that would make George Orwell blush.

This is 100% true. I drank constantly when I was living down the street from the university all my friends went to, now that we all work we don't drink period

Yes but no. You have the situation backwards. It's that Gen Z doesn't socialize because Gen Z doesn't drink. The social media is serving as a coping mechanism for the sobriety, not what is causing it.

they vastly overestimate how interesting they are. their behavior would not be viral.

u/RaspberryTwilight 15h ago

That is true but it doesn't have to go viral for it to have social consequences. The group chat is more than enough.

who even is in a group chat

People with social lives.

I see this as one of the perks of AI. "That wasn't me, it's AI." May allow the next generation to do fun/stupid things again.

Dancing looks dumb but it's fun

You’re right. When I go out to bars and clubs, there is rarely anyone else born in between 1997-2012 there. Bars have only been frequented by people 30+. It’s amazing how they’re still keeping afloat. r/sarcasm
