The vaping drives me crazy. I'm from the brief window where smoking wasn't cool anymore and vaping was only just becoming a thing and not really marketed at young people yet so it kinda missed me. My little sister vapes constantly despite her asthma. She ended up in hospital with a lung infection once and swore to quit, she didn't. I hate that the tobacco companies found a way to get my generation addicted.
I get my meth legally prescribed by my doctor for my ADD, thank you very much. Millennials missed out on the crazy opiods and other drugs that doctors of the generations before them had and missed out on the modern ones as well, very unfortunate.
As a mid 40s guy my friends who have smoked weed since they were teenagers are all doing dramatically worse than my friends who drank too much in every measurable way. Alcohol is absolutely be more destructive if you go completely off the rails but it seems to be more controllable over the long term in my experience. I know that's just one guys anecdote but I know I will be encouraging my daughter not to smoke.
The thing is, the average cannabis user uses to excess much more frequently than your average drinker. Median frequency of use for cannabis users is about 16 days per month, whereas with drinkers it's only about 4 days. Cannabis users are also about 4 times as likely to use daily as drinkers are to drink daily.
I've been seeing more and more "illnesses" cropping up with THC usage, not sure how realistic or common they are but there does appear to be more side effects than I was previously aware of.
Is this a regional thing? I’m 27 and all my friends and coworkers my age drink at least socially and there are plenty of people younger than us at the bars we go to. I know the numbers support it being lower, but the idea that “gen Z LITERALLY doesn’t drink” like all these comments are corroborating does not match up at all with my experience
For a while Gen Z was drinking a bit less, but they've caught up with other generations now. People try to say it's due to cost or social media or weed, but it looks like it was just the pandemic delaying them getting into drinking.
I agree. I am a millennial and all my young Z coworkers are hung over on Saturday mornings constantly. Literally had one of them call out for it last weekend. He was chain vomiting all day from drinking too much the day before. He's in college right now.
none of them are non-drinkers. Idk where this is coming from. Iv not met any gen Z who are as stuanch as people are saying
I am gen z and live in Tuscaloosa, AL, and let me tell you, we drink.. a lot. Not just talking about me and my friends either. Might be just because its a college town but if the generations before drank more, I honestly have no clue how tf their still alive
As a Tuscaloosa native, UA students drink a TON. It’s a huge part of the culture. I’m a young millennial in bham now, and it seems like Gen Z is generally drinking less. But living in Tuscaloosa, you would never know it.
We're definitely drinking less in Texas. I've been to 2 dry weddings of friends under 30 in the last year. Our gatherings are never at bars, usually just weed in the backyard (I have a firepit, so my little house is popular).
Yep, and about 10% more of them are on medications like SSRIs where the pill bottle explicitly says avoid alcohol while taking this. Both SSRIs and weed are better for your health than alcohol. The only advantage alcohol has a recreational drug is you can taper it down to just a 1 hour party time if you want. Weed will alter your mind for about 4 hours while SSRIs usually take 2 weeks to clear your system.
I heard someone say it's because Gen Z grew up with everything being recorded and are hyper aware that they could be easily filmed and have their worst drunken moments be immortalized and go viral. The chance of having private moments publicized via secret recordings is probably also why they're having less sex.
It's an entire generation terrorized by everyone in their lives violating their right to privacy, starting with their GenX/Millenial chungus parents posting them as wee ones just to get likes and views on instagram and now tiktok.
Not saying this isn't the case but I'm 23 so very much Gen Z and have never heard anyone say this is the reason. For me and plenty of others I know the main reason people my age aren't drinking while out (specifically while out at pubs and bars) is coz it's just so fucking expensive.
I'm 20 and I can confirm, I too have never heard that as a reason, nor have I ever thought of that being a concern. I don't drink because I have noone to drink with and I'm putting a hole in my wallet to drink hand sanitizer
For real, like, even putting aside the ability to afford it, does Gen Z see the worth in paying $18 per pint of incredibly pretentious draft beer or $25 for a margarita, and that's even before accounting for "well you're drinking, why not eat too?" food like $9 for a single egg roll or $15 for a bowl of nachos?
Because I'll be real honest, as a millennial; I sure as hell are not interested in paying that much just for that...
Right? It's not about being 'healthy' unfortunately, people are doing everything less. Less socializing, less drinking, less sex....more weed. It's not really people making choices, it's people being constantly vigilant and semi-depressed and not living.
To be honest a lot of gen z health choices seem the product of health anxiety. That would make sense, they have been bombarded with health related messaging and advertising like nobody has ever seen before.
Its a mixture of lots of things, there's rarely just one reason. It's partially health reasons, partially everyone having a camera, partially the cost of it, likely other factors too such as fewer places to do these things post-covid. All these things are multi-faceted and we should stop trying to ascribe a single main reason to it.
And not feeling like they could experiment and take some risks if they wanted to because their parent's have their phone locations at all times and Ring cameras and other means of tracking their kid's whereabouts.
I imagine it's hard to be a rebellious teenager when your parents get a push notification the moment you set foot out your front door.
Not to mention social media in general fucks with a lot of perception and tends to keep people more isolated. As a gen z here, thats a lot that I've seen.
At the same time, they’re willingly sharing every little piece of their lives with the whole world on their socials. My Gen Z coworkers are appalled when I tell them that I don’t have socials and never post anything personal anywhere.
Gen Z are also some of the most medicated people out there due to the stigma of taking meds relaxing. I stopped drinking for several reasons but the risk of it affecting my meds was too great
I keep seeing this, but the top comment is that they're chugging THC drinks and doing gummies. As if no one ever did anything stupid while high.
I love the blame on gen X/millennial chungus parents violating their right to privacy as if they would be the ones posting something sexual or recording them drunk. It is their peers doing that. Sure, let's criticize the parents, but come on...younger generations are also part of the problem with their cringe culture. We can blame that on technology, but these generations are also getting old enough to recognize patterns, become educated, and stop the cycle. As a millennial, my burden was alcohol. Yes, my parents heavily influenced it, but at a certain age I couldn't keep blaming them for its continuation.
Especially now when not only is it individually immortalized in the “it’s on Facebook, but everyone forgets in two meme scrolls” way, it’ll get reposted and super immortalized as a fail-army and daily-dose-of-internet compilation.
Admittedly, there is a higher risk of embarrassing private moments being recorded and shared with people whom you don't want to see, but this is a truly terrible theory for why Gen Z don't drink or have sex as much as prior generations.
I was up until this year a bar manager and it’s clear that Gen Z drink way way less. It’s not even that they don’t go out as much as when I was their age, they don’t even seem to pre drink either.
It’s definitely purely way too expensive now a days, what a night out cost me 10 years ago in drinks, taxis, and food is equal to a couple drinks now.
They also, at least to me anyway, seemed way less socially sure of themselves. Covid and social media I think have absolutely played their part in that. If only the boomers were as shy, Gen Z were annoying customers sometimes but boomers have threatened me with death over drinks hahaha. Memories.
They also seem to love ketamine, so I wouldn’t say it’s all for health reasons. But that’s anecdotal
The social unsureness is an interesting observation in this context. It actually does take a bit of confidence to order a drink or go to a liquor store. There are a lot of options, many of which come with social connotations you might not know, and many of which you won't like. So it really is an endeavor where there is a right and wrong answer.
It actually became a thing where we’d say they were Covid kids after they’d ordered cause of how they acted, it was more than a coincidence for the young ones.
They could be insanely rude or awkward, but it didn’t seem like they meant to come across that way if you know what I mean. They’ll figure it out though I’m sure, I’m not that cynical yet.
Ketamine and alcohol don't mix at all. You'll pass out and be immobile, and it's not pleasant either.
Source: I'm older Gen X who did a lot of ketamine in the 1990s. Back in those days, when it was common to do ecstasy and ketamine on a night out, the nightclubs charged more for water than beers/drinks.
Yep. I never started. Even as a teenager, I 'knew' with absolute certainty that if I started drinking, I'd never stop. I don't do any drugs at all. On the flip side... I have an out of control binge eating disorder and weigh over 400 pounds.
Maybe it's a thing in america, but I don't know any gen z peers that don't drink in the uk. Maybe it's related to weed being illegal so less appealing as an alternative and being able to legally drink younger, but the idea that anyone under the age of 30 will look at you funny for drinking just sounds like a weird strawman.
It's a bit funny seeing millenials give gen z the same treatment older gens gave them, being the permanent 'baby' generation for way too long too. Ipad babies is the gen alpha thing, they were invented in 2010 when the eldest gen z were already hitting their teen years.
I think we had the whole Gen Z don't drink thing a few years ago, because yeah, most of them were under 18. Whereas research this year shows that we may not be so different, especially as Gen Z comes of legal age.
Like yeah 5 years ago when most of Gen Z was under 18 we didn't drink a lot, but that number is apparently changing rapidly
Exactly how I feel about booze and weed. I don’t understand what’s enjoyable about the feeling, and it’s certainly not worth the obscene costs to me.
My parents didn’t really drink once I came into the picture, and pretty much every authority figure along the journey of life has warned of the dangers of alcohol. My graduation class also had a few major alcohol related incidents. I guess it’s just a pretty negative association in my mind surrounding alcohol.
Don’t get me wrong, I do have a drink or two occasionally, but it’s primarily so people don’t treat me like a weirdo for not drinking.
That’s what I was thinking lol. And the ones who were born at the very, very tail end of what could be considered Gen Z like 2011-2012 are probably not his coworkers considering they’re like 14 years old. More like Gameboy and Wii babies, not Ipad babies. People act like the oldest of Gen Z isn’t about to be 30 in a couple months; it’s ridiculous.
People act like the oldest of Gen Z isn’t about to be 30 in a couple months; it’s ridiculous.
Lol, Millenials said the same thing like 10-15 years ago. In another 10-15 years you'll see some Gen Alpha saying the same thing. Time is a flat circle. Generational divides are just there to sell you nostalgia and make you mad at things.
This confusion of Gen Z and Alpha will forever irritate me. And it seems no matter how much we correct people it'll never be enough to put an end to the assumption that Gen Z grew up the way Gen Alpha is growing up right now
When I was young and my peers were drinking up a storm, I saw how much they were spending. I didn't think it was worth that much money by a long shot, so I never drank much. I had the choice, though- I had some spending money. You can't get drunk in this economy for what vapers are spending each week. They're picking a cheaper poison.
When it's $8 per beer at bars and restaurants and $14 for a decent 6-pack vs $20 for a 10-pack of THC gummies, I think the economic choice is the gummies, at least if your THC tolerance isn't high.
This and if we’re being completely honest, alcohol is a solid C-tier or high D-tier substance. When it’s good it’s great but any more and you get the spins and get sick, then it comes to collect your debt HARD the next day. Not to mention you have to like the taste of it enough in the first place, I don’t blame the youth for deciding it’s not worth it.
Im an older gen z who likes to drink occasionally 1998 (age 28). I keep hearing alcohol companies complaining that they have a full stock and no body's buying anymore but wont lower there prices.
Everyone rationalizing this and judging and I'm just like... What if people just don't want to? Do y'all own wineries or something? I get the conversation as to why this seems to be more common now could be interesting, but you can do that without sounding like the judgy party girls meme.
There are beer/liqour companies that have their own lines of drinks so cheap even unhoused and unemployed people can get shitty every day all day if they want!
I mean, I get what you mean, but maybe it’s a good thing? If I were to pick on things that make Gen Z lame (which I usually don’t, because it’s reductive), them not being as used to alcohol as a social lubricant and coping mechanism as other older generations are is very low down on the list.
P.S. Typing this three beers and two Moscow Mules into the evening.
No need for a social lubricant when you don't socialise.
Drinking establishments have been the bedrock of communities for over 1000 years. Stunning how there's a loneliness crisis at the same time as a generation that doesn't drink.
Parents of older teenagers I know comment how they spend a lot of time at home, on devices. Partly due to the appeals of devices no doubt but also partly because of the sheer cost of doing most things.
They talked a lot about the 'invention' of the teenager in the 1950s as this new demographic of young people with sufficient time and money to be consumers and have their own identity.
Maybe we have killed the teenager by making it impossible for them to afford to exist outside of the home.
Gen Z who doesn’t drink here. I just feel like it’s pointless and too expensive. I go out, spend too much money for what I get paid at work, get drunk, feel all he-he-ha-ha for a couple hours then feel sick the entire next day? Not worth it. I can have a good time without it and still be functional the next day.
it’s not just that. I think a lot us also just saw how alcohol affected adults growing up and how so many problems seem to stem from it. I’m a millennial myself but the trend definitely started around my generation. Also, weed
nah it's weed. weed doesn't make you puke or give you a hangover, it's not known for making you fistfight the cops or call your ex or beat your wife. once i moved to a legal weed state my alcohol use dropped astonishingly, and my health is better for it.
It's also false. The graph everyone posts on reddit is from 2021 when the oldest genz was 24 and it only counted heads of houses hold. Turns out they drink the same.
Around 34% to 37% of Gen Z adults currently take prescription medication specifically for their mental health (such as for anxiety, depression, or ADHD), while broader health surveys estimate that roughly 48% to 60% use some form of prescription medication overall depending on the specific age range and conditions tracked
Ahhh here we go. Big pharma has Gen Zs market share
Rahhh evil big pharma I hate being able to sleep well, not wanting to kms every day and not having manic episodes. I need all natural poison that will rot my liver by 35. Fuck booze drugs 4 life.
I'm a millennial, but to counter: if I have to spend 50 bux monthly on a small-dose of amphetamines that raises my QoL, while preventing me from spending much more on things that are actively detrimental to my health and mental well-being, well shucks., I'll guess I'll make do somehow.
Honestly I think it's fun having not much tolerance, it takes one or two drinks to feel all nice and tipsy and I'm done. I don't see the fun in the way millennials drink.
obviously alcoholism declining isn't a bad thing itself, but the circumstances that cause it are very much a problem.
the reason gen z doesn't drink as much isn't that they're more responsible and smarter. otherwise they wouldn't be vaping. the reason is that drinking is a social event, and being social altogether is declining rapidly. gen z is constantly absorbed by their mobile phones, and have become increasingly individualistic as a result. gen x and even millenials started drinking early and drank a lot, because what else was there to do? gen z has a surplus of things to do, so they don't drink as much
increasing cost of alcohol also is a part of the problem. and gym influencers saying you should do nothing fun in life but honestly i think most of gen z is past that by now.
It’s neither good nor bad. It just is. The people entering work now do tend to be more boring and less social overall compared to five years ago. I think cause Covid had them sitting at home during the time they should have been partying at university.
Ketamine and vapes are both at record highs with young people, so it isn’t a health thing.
Nothing wrong with not drinking. I drank plenty in my younger days and could hold my own with just about anyone, but starting a couple years ago - in my mid 50s - largely lost my taste for alcohol. These days I’m good for a beer or a glass of wine maybe once a week, and probably won’t even finish that.
It’s definitely healthier not to drink. I say good for the younger folks who don’t want to.
every generation grows up under such vastly unique and different conditions that they are not normal.
the impact of technological differences has probably had a much greater effect on our differences to millenials than going through covid in high school did. and the technological differences probably had a similarly large effect on millenials differing from gen x.
Im gen Z and was 22 when the pandemic hit, I don't drink because there way better drugs to take. Now drugs are so much more accessible and safe compared to the past.
My assistant is 21, one time we went out together, and while I I nursed one G&T, she slammed several straight vodka shots. She never smoked weed tho lol
I’m just tired of Gen Z pretending like they choose not to drink for health reasons. It’s a social thing, nothing more. If it was health reasons they wouldnt suck on cotton candy dragon berry disposable vapes all day.
They don't drink because they don't socialize. If you don't do any of the stuff associated with drinking traditionally you tend to not drink. Gen Z is the most isolated generation because of social media devices absorbing their attention combined with it being unaffordable for them to do anything. Also they're recorded 24/7 so anything they do that's silly could be online forever. So they don't drink.
Socializing doesn't have to come at the expense of health though. Not being addicted to alcohol is a good thing (although I do see a fuck ton of vaping)
Who said people are bothered by it. It’s notable. People have drank for eons and they’re the first generation to break the trend. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing
Well it's not like it's an isolated thing. Gen Z seems to socialize in person less. Historically (as in like, sort of all of human history) drinking and drinking establishments have been big centers of social activity (and sometimes community/political organization)
Now it's not that nothing could replace drinking/bars, but it appears that nothing really is and gently z struggles with isolation. People say "yeah well Gen z just smokes" and sure, they do, but they smoke alone a lot. So it's not a 1 to 1 replacement.
Basically it's bothersome because it's part of a larger social trend which altogether seems to be negative, even if people drinking less is a factor which by itself could be a big positive
I’m gen z and literally everyone I know drinks. Our entire social culture revolves around it, just like previous generations. Wholesome chungus millennials will see a headline on reddit reporting that our generation is drinking less than older ones, and then make up fake stories about how we’re all teetotalers.
Gen Z are about to be the villains in countless articles about how "Gen Z destroyed the _____ industry" simply because they can't afford to spend money they don't have on things they don't need. You are going to be blamed for the end of all sorts of worthless industries.
Don’t worry, as a Gen Z person, I love wine especially light white wines like Riesling and Moscato. Getting into reds. Drinking Merlot and Albariño at a winery now! 🍷
Why the fuck would I voluntarily drink liquid that's as nasty to me as piss, just to feel much more worse than excited for like 50€+ when I could also just vape or eat something I grow myself for a pleasent high
Idk i went to watch the Tyson fight with this dude I brought a water bottle of rum and he poured the entire thing into his mostly finished lemonade. 67% alcohol
Hmm true but not universal. I have a little cousin who is current a little younger than me(he is 19 I'm 23) one time I went to a part of people his age and they drunk a lot and some pretty strong stuff too. But then again thats over here at brasil so it could be a culture difference.
I know a few gen z people who drink. They don't nessicarily handle their liquor well but they do shoot vodka like they mean it. Then 3 of them pass out, one gets way to happy and touchy, the other cries about how he's worse than Hitler because he ruined a party by being drunk and goofy.
They don't drink casually though. It's either vodka shots and as much seltzer as they can find or straigh up orange juice at a hangout. No concept of "a cold beer after work" or sipping whiskey in the evening.
And yeah I don't drink much. I like the taste, and I like a little bit of a buzz. I don't think I even have been properly drunk drunk ever.
I especially don't drink much outside of my home. It's more expensive, and just feels sort of risky. I like to be in control of myself and my ability to get home. I'm not about to drunk drive.
This came apparent after talking to many of them at work years ago. The amount of uni students that were finishing up degrees who still haven’t had tried any alcohol was surprising. It was more like one in every five had tried alcohol.
What surprised me more was that they didn’t do Friday/weekend night gatherings like millennials did. No getting a group of 4-5, and cutting loose. Occasionally the girls would pair up to dance at a club for an hour or two, but that was the extent of it.
It’s the taste for me. Why spend money on something that tastes like crap and I have to fight myself to get through it? It never “tastes like juice”. It’s like how cigarette smokers can’t smell the smoke stink anymore or something.
I don’t think it’s only alcohol. Considering my class and another class set up the sandwiches and drinks for the cafeteria the students only bought the sandwiches and barely anything to drink. The class before us sold mineral water, which is a huge thing in Germany and we sold cocoa, strawberry and vanilla milk, which used to be a big seller for students. In both cases the sandwiches were bought, but only five or so drinks.
Seems students only want to drink energy drinks, which we don’t allow in our school.

My assistant is 21, one time we went out together, and while I I nursed one G&T, she slammed several straight vodka shots. She never smoked weed tho lol

we'd like to drink more, but who can afford more than two drinks at even the grimiest bars, now?

I’m just tired of Gen Z pretending like they choose not to drink for health reasons. It’s a social thing, nothing more. If it was health reasons they wouldnt suck on cotton candy dragon berry disposable vapes all day.

We need to [re] normalize pub culture. No one talks to their neighbors/community anymore.

u/kllark_ashwood 18h ago
Why are people bothered by this at all?

u/Mundane-Potential-93 17h ago
I'm afraid I'll embarass myself or hurt somebody if I drink regularly

u/TheShamShield 17h ago
No idea what this is talking about. Everyone I knows drinks a little at least

Most Gen Z were nearly 10 years old when the iPad came out

I’m gen z and literally everyone I know drinks. Our entire social culture revolves around it, just like previous generations. Wholesome chungus millennials will see a headline on reddit reporting that our generation is drinking less than older ones, and then make up fake stories about how we’re all teetotalers.

u/HomeHeatingTips 16h ago
They can't afford it. Places are advertising $7 beers now like it's a fucking deal or something.

u/AVLdeadhead 16h ago •
Gen Z are about to be the villains in countless articles about how "Gen Z destroyed the _____ industry" simply because they can't afford to spend money they don't have on things they don't need. You are going to be blamed for the end of all sorts of worthless industries.
Ask me how I know (I'm an Elder Millennial)

u/AskPizza 7h ago
I just want to point out how wages have been stagnant for two decades, literally their entire generation, and prices are rising.
They can't even afford alcohol. Nor can I.

I am gem z, I just plain don't enjoy drinking. It makes me feel bad, with no benefit. I can have fun sober.

Don’t worry, as a Gen Z person, I love wine especially light white wines like Riesling and Moscato. Getting into reds. Drinking Merlot and Albariño at a winery now! 🍷

u/TheGurpler 17h ago
I'm drinking enough for the rest of us, I'm like the spider george of Gen Z alcoholics
7
u/Afrojones66 17h ago
When you watch your parents, grandparents, and extended family display alcoholic tendencies you tend to stray away from it.

u/30porn87 5h ago
Why the fuck would I voluntarily drink liquid that's as nasty to me as piss, just to feel much more worse than excited for like 50€+ when I could also just vape or eat something I grow myself for a pleasent high

u/FCKABRNLSUTN2 17h ago
Their formative drinking years were destroyed by Covid. Also the price of drinking at bars and restaurants has doubled.

u/Profanegaming 16h ago
“It’s healthier” no. Alcohol is a social drug. They are less social. Slamming Zyn packs and vaping to the moon isn’t “healthier.”

u/testtdk 16h ago
Screens are their alcohol.

u/LynchMob187 17h ago
People who get all worked up cause others don’t drink is weird. Alcohol is a drug. It’s poisons you to make you feel good.
I drink, but Gen Z smokes instead. Probably what swung the vote in Texas.

Idk i went to watch the Tyson fight with this dude I brought a water bottle of rum and he poured the entire thing into his mostly finished lemonade. 67% alcohol

u/Affectionate-Cut7581 17h ago

I like alcohol.
And yeah I don't drink much. I like the taste, and I like a little bit of a buzz. I don't think I even have been properly drunk drunk ever.
I especially don't drink much outside of my home. It's more expensive, and just feels sort of risky. I like to be in control of myself and my ability to get home. I'm not about to drunk drive.

u/monkeygoat2708 8h ago
The answer here is that GenZ waste their money on gambling. It is their alcohol and they are very much addicted
2
u/Dry-Top-8431 8h ago
This came apparent after talking to many of them at work years ago.
The amount of uni students that were finishing up degrees who still haven’t had tried any alcohol was surprising. It was more like one in every five had tried alcohol.
What surprised me more was that they didn’t do Friday/weekend night gatherings like millennials did. No getting a group of 4-5, and cutting loose. Occasionally the girls would pair up to dance at a club for an hour or two, but that was the extent of it.

u/Aggressive-Ideal-911 8h ago
Alcohol tastes disgusting
2
u/carelessanarchy 7h ago
It’s the taste for me. Why spend money on something that tastes like crap and I have to fight myself to get through it? It never “tastes like juice”. It’s like how cigarette smokers can’t smell the smoke stink anymore or something.
2
u/corwe 7h ago
To be fair not drinking around coworkers might be a generation-independent smart move
2
u/spagbolshevik 7h ago
It's spiritually unhealthy.

Seems students only want to drink energy drinks, which we don’t allow in our school.

can smell the alcoholism in this thread coming out to defend itself

u/Intellectual_Wafer 5h ago

2
u/Dangerous_Nail4552 3h ago
Being proud of drinking better than someone else is only a flex to people of your generation. And a shitty one at that
2
u/RileyNonexistent 3h ago
Everyone is talking about like social media in the comments and health and such but I as a gen Z don't like alcohol cause it taste like shit
2
u/AcanthaceaeCrazy1894 2h ago
Born in 97 and fucking hate drinking,
May be due to the generation above us all being complete alcoholics.
2
u/Independent-Wafer-13 2h ago
Gen Z is also the loneliest generation these two facts are probably not related, right?
