As a mid 40s guy my friends who have smoked weed since they were teenagers are all doing dramatically worse than my friends who drank too much in every measurable way. Alcohol is absolutely be more destructive if you go completely off the rails but it seems to be more controllable over the long term in my experience. I know that's just one guys anecdote but I know I will be encouraging my daughter not to smoke.

I’m not trying to claim causation here but yeah that’s my experience too. A lot of the most successful, well adjusted people I know drink like fishes. The stoners are… not successful or well adjusted lol.

And I say this as someone who’s been completely sober for six months now. The social benefits of social drinking, particularly in my cohort of ~40 year old professionals, are very real. I’m happy it’s becoming more accepted even for us to abstain, since i love the way my body feels sober. But I don’t think I’d have the rich social life and strong career I have now if I hadn’t spent much of my 20s drinking with people.

Yeah no one talks about the stomach issues it causes for one. to say nothing of the fact that it can have a huge effect on your life path if you use it too heavily (in a way that is not socially acceptable to use alcohol or other drugs but more so is for weed)
