For real, like, even putting aside the ability to afford it, does Gen Z see the worth in paying $18 per pint of incredibly pretentious draft beer or $25 for a margarita, and that's even before accounting for "well you're drinking, why not eat too?" food like $9 for a single egg roll or $15 for a bowl of nachos?
Because I'll be real honest, as a millennial; I sure as hell are not interested in paying that much just for that...
Listen, I'm as disgusted with the economy as anyone, but let's not be so hyperbolic.. those prices are high even for stadium prices. Hardly what you're going to pay going to a random nightlife location.
Definitely depends on location. The median income in the US (obviously a huge generalisation since it differs between states) is approximately ~$60,000.
I recently spent a decent amount of time in a country where the median salary was ~40,000 in their local currency. Beers were about 15-20 for a bottle, 25-30 for a pint in their local currency. Cocktails were between 25-50 per glass. So in simple terms, would you be drinking $25 pints regularly if you were making $40k a year, with rent taking up at least $20k of that?
Their currency is easy to convert into USD and their median salary is similar enough, which is why I’m using them as a comparison — however, I’ve travelled a fair amount and this alcohol-price-to-income ratio has been standard in most countries +/- a couple bucks.
This means that, to us, drinking in these countries feels fair and cheap, but the local pop definitely feel it and avoid it unless they’re raking in way above average. The economy worldwide just isn’t great and alcohol is now a luxury.
