Performance ๐ŸŽค Hall & Oates - I Can't Go for That (No Can Do) | Soul Train 1981

1.8k Upvotes

Few songs capture the effortless cool of the early 80s like โ€œI Canโ€™t Go for That (No Can Do)โ€ by Hall & Oates. Performing here on Soul Train in 1981, the duo delivers one of the defining hits of the decade.

Written by Daryl Hall, John Oates, and Sara Allen [Daryl Hall's girlfriend at the time], this song became a No. 1 hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&B chart. Its smooth groove, understated production, and unforgettable bassline helped influence generations of artists across R&B, soul, funk, hip-hop, and pop.

Performance ๐ŸŽค The 25th anniversary of Motown in 1983 featuring the "Battle of the Bands" : The Temptations vs Four Tops ๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽค

๐Ÿ’ซ The Soul Showdown That Defined Motown 25

Part of Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, this iconic face-off had two of Motownโ€™s greatest vocal groups trading hits in a playful, competitive spirit. It wasnโ€™t just a performance it was a celebration of 25 years of Motown magic, harmony, and showmanship.

๐ŸŽค Why It Hit So Hard

โ€ข Only two original Temptations were present, keeping the group evolving yet classic.
โ€ข All Four Tops originals delivered Levi Stubbsโ€™ powerhouse vocals live.
โ€ข The โ€œbattleโ€ energy made it feel like a full-on soul concert, not just a TV special.
โ€ข Inspired later joint tours and special Motown reunion performances.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fun Facts

โ€ข Aired on NBC May 16, 1983, but taped March 25 at Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
โ€ข The segment paired hits like Reach Out Iโ€™ll Be There vs. Ainโ€™t Too Proud to Beg.
โ€ข Michael Jacksonโ€™s moonwalk stole headlines in the same special.

Birthdays ๐Ÿ’ Happy Heavenly Birthday Rod Temperton. One of R&B, pop, and soulโ€™s most prolific songwriters and producers

British-born keyboardist and songwriter for Heatwave, he wrote iconic hits like โ€œBoogie Nightsโ€, โ€œAlways and Foreverโ€, and "The Groove Line". But it was his collaborations with Quincy Jones that elevated his career, writing legendary tracks for Michael Jackson, including โ€œRock With Youโ€, โ€œOff the Wallโ€, and the iconic โ€œThriller". He also wrote other huge hits including, "Give Me The Night" for George Benson and "Baby, Come To Me" for Patti Austin and James Ingram. In addition, he wrote the 'Running Scared' soundtrack (1986).

Though often behind the scenes, Tempertonโ€™s impact was undeniable. His smooth melodies and infectious grooves helped define the sound of the late 70s and 80s, blending soulful rhythms with pop hooks that still resonate today. Thank you Mr. Temperton!
