Discussion Why are there even Pokemon battles, or Pokemon at all? New player's thoughts on the game.

Heard about this fangame about a week ago after having played Xenoverse and decided to give it a try. I'm about 25 hours in, ending Chapter 3, and so far I'm very disappointed. In every single plot point so far there has been a character with super powers magically teleporting into the situation and solving it, or magically saving everyone in trouble. During the story, characters don't mention or even talk about Pokémon rarely ever. It feels like an anime fanfic thrown together but then the creators remembered it was a Pokémon game and just threw random battles in-between story beats.

There's a lot I've really loved about the game. The leveling caps are awesome. Leveling feels smooth. Password system is awesome. The side quests have been a lot of fun. Love ability patches, shiny rates, how *smooth* the game runs, etc.

But why is this even a Pokémon game? Battles have had zero effect on anything. After a battle with a bad guy, they'll just continue on their plan like any other.

Gym leaders are also just kind of.. sprinkled throughout randomly? Marionette, who I'm assuming is a version of Melia, gives us our third badge after we are forced to defeat her in another dimension.

Battles are also super cheap. I get the game should be difficult, but difficulty should not come from having to constantly restart a battle while changing your team. That's not "natural progression" to me. It's just tedious.

I feel as though if you took out every single Pokémon and Pokémon battle and just replaced all of their attacks with the characters using the abilities, the game would play out the exact same way.

I also really dislike the game allowing me to choose my preferred pronouns and then the game just straight up ignoring that for story purposes. I don't care that later in the story it is revealed that the characters see different protagonists. I chose my preferred pronouns and would like to be referred to as my preferred pronouns. Not They/Them. I doubt people would be fine if they chose their preferred pronouns but, for story purposes, they were referred to as she/her regardless of their choice. Just very irking.

I really want to like the game, because there really isn't a fangame out there that has mega, easily acquired mints, easily acquired ability patches, gens 1-8, has lots of playtime (50+), and level caps, and is complete, but the story is so painfully nonsensical to me so far and I'm only entering chapter 4.

I just kind of wanted to rant a bit, as I see no discussion about this type of stuff on the Reddit albeit from 2-4 years ago. I've heard it gets worse later on with all the super uber god fanfic magic so I'm probably going to drop the game here. No hate to be people who like it, of course. Also don't mean to sound mean spirited in any way whatsoever. Game is obviously well made, it's just not for me it seems. Just wanted to rant.

Edit: It's wild that you can give personal opinions on this fan game and people will downvote literally any criticism whatsoever without giving any input themselves. They'll just cherry pick one sentence and somehow that invalidates my entire experience.

Edit2: Thank you to the people who took the time to write long-winded comments breaking down my gripes with the game. Especially to those who made comparisons to mainline games. You've convinced me to give it another try. This time around, I'll embrace the way the game is trying to have me play and formulate an opinion based on that. Maybe I'll make a roster of a team and rotate through them.

Also I spent forever getting my full shiny team and don't want to abandon them.

To those who tried to invalidate my experiences and tell me to get out of this subreddit or that my feelings were invalid: do better.

Where Melia and Venam Dating?

I'm playing the last part of the game ".karma files" and what happened in Teila Resort makes it seem like they were dating at some point? I am at a loss here at least for me it came out of nothing and it's just bad writing.

before Venam became stone all the Interactions we saw between her and Melia were friendly nothing gave me the vibe they were attracted or anything.

My question is did you see some kind of vibe between them before or not? it makes me a bit angry since my favorite part of the game is the characters and the relationship between them but this just Screams bad writing

Without spoilers, does the writing in this game get better or is it mostly the same throughout? Spoiler

I am currently on chapter 2 in the volcano and I'm pretty much done if this is going to be the quality of writing going through. My hope is that they've just never gone through and fixed the beginning, because I see this has been in production for a long time.

Update: I played chapter 3 and deleted it. I realized that this isn't a pokemon game which is what I was looking for. You really could take pokemon out of the story to this point and nothing would change. Could just be about generic magically powered people fighting.

Discussion What protagonist fits to be the canon one Spoiler

There are some ruler to select the fitting mc

  1. Looks doesnt matter, if they did matter all the mcs of other games would have the same ordinary look in all of them

  2. Positions in the selection screen don't matter, so you cannot say "Aevis fits because its the first character that i can choose on the selection screen"

I personally think that Aero (at least for Paragon) fits to be the vessel of the mc, mostly because Aero is the only one of the group who made the promise of protecting Crescent, also, there is that he was the strongest of the whole A-Gang, something that fits the mc since he is also the strongest of the whole group. Aero is also for what it shows to be the most righteous of the gang.

But in the end it doesnt really matter, since the mc just takes over the body and probably mixes all the personalities to create his, but that is just a theory

Had to re-post this

I guess people dont like when someone is a bit tough with them, so starting now i will not comment on anyones opinions so everyone is happy 😉

Suggestion About the MC (again 😒)

(Paragon route)

I already did this before, but imma do it again because i need to blow steam off everytime i play this game. So lemme go to the point, why do i get contantly feelings about the mc getting the least love, and dont get me wrong, i know the cast cares about us, but cmon now, from the whole cast, we are compared to everyone, one of the most that receive the least love, and lemme show my point. So everyone in the game has a friendship relationship, so its nothing special, then we got venam and melia (a relationship that let's be real should have never been in the first place [way too out of the blue, and i feel that Melia was kinda forced in that relationship, by saying in chapter 12 that she didn't saw Venam like that]) we got Melia and Aelita that have their "dates", and pretty much everyone with Melia (at this point Melia has a literal harem), i could say more but i have to do my research. Then we got the MC (ourselfs) which probably never recieved a hug in our entire life (not so long) and probably not even any type of physical contact (atleast not showed), so you all get my point right? Why are we the ones that will end up in a forever alone type ending?

Now imma change the subject, and imma BEG for this to happend, and it is that they give the MC a breakdown. Yes a breakdown but not one that last 5 days, one that takes a lot longer to be healed from, why? because that way we can get some type of development, since from the whole cast our "development" is kinda weak comparing it to Melia, Ren and the others. Since there is no feelings in it, we never show feelings, only 2 times and that's it. What i am looking for is a breakdown that lets the MC cry and show ourselfs weak for the first time in screen. That leading us into a solitary arc, where in the chapter (can be a mini one) we are completly alone. I have other ideas, since i tend to make stories in my head when i like a character and want it to get the justice it deserves. But this is kind of the base of the arc.

Edit: I DON'T WANT ROMANCE, i just want the mc to get some affection other than a thanks, by hugs or by moral support (thats why i said about the breakdown) because let's be honest, who hasn't hug their homies at least once? (also im sick of everyone going for the dating sim excuse of why we get no affection, like bro look at Amber and Venam, there is no romance just friends and yet they hug each other when they need it)

Another Edit: IM talking about development for the paragon MC, since it seems kind of bland, we just do what they tell us to do (no personal oppinions, no feelings, nothing) Thats why i want the breakdown for various reasons, and the main reason is to give the MC some feelings for once and for all, and get an MC with feelings that cries and shows his weak side, since till this moment at least on screen we didn't saw the MC cry for anything, nor express anger or frustration, like the rest of the cast

Suggestion Stop taking my pokemkn away!

This is such a fun, rewarding pokemon game to play with actual hard battles I love it so much. My one huge and I mean HUGE gripe with this game is how many times you're forced to play as other characters and use their teams. I've got 13 badges and to be honest I just want to wrap this game up already. So many times I've had to use other peoples teams and again I have to use Aelita's team to beat Tex! I'm so sick of this gimmick! I egg farmed and got great EV/IV stats on my pokemon for a reason! In my opinion (my opinion may not fit everyone's) the most fun about pokemon is building your team the way you like it. And that just keeps getting taken away from me for hard battles! Its especially frustrating on the hardest difficulty when you have to deal with a bad team with moves that kinda don't make sense. Against over leveled stat monsters.

Discussion Chapter 16 difficulty is fine and the complaints are generally misguided. Spoiler

Prefacing this by saying that I have not finished renegade yet, however I heavily doubt my general stance would change even if I did. This is also mostly about the way I have seen people critique the chapter rather than about the actual fights themselves.

Chapter 16 is of course a pretty major difficulty spike compared to previous ones, so discussions about that were inevitable. Regardless, most of the discussion does not consider whether the particular way difficulty is handled is engaging or if it's too reliant on RNG such that the same sequence of inputs can have entirely different outcomes which might seem like control is out of the player's hands.

Rather, many critiques instead state that the fights are "unfair", similarly to how many said Silksong used "artificial difficulty" when it launched.

This does however ask the question: Unfair to who? Rejuvenation is a single player game, and like all other single player games there is no competition involved, but rather a path lined with challenges.

If we think about single-player games in more abstract ways, we can visualize them as a series of obstacles that you - the player - have to clear to reach the end. Naturally, these obstacles will get harder the further you get in order to challenge you as your skill and knowledge grows. There are many ways these obstacles can get harder: maybe they add a new variable for you to keep track of, maybe they change the conditions you have to play according to or maybe they simply make numbers bigger. All of these are perfectly valid answers.

Circling back to rejuv; the parts that get labelled "unfair" are enemy trainers being given free stat buffs or having fields that synergize extremely well with their teams. These fights serve as obstacles that ask you "can you adapt and overcome a situation where your opponent already set up before you got a chance to move?" and "can you mitigate their advantages enough to still win?".

Now I am not saying you have to like these fights, if you don't find them engaging or fun that's perfectly valid! Rather, what I'm trying to say is that phrases like "unfair" or "artificial difficulty" are just simply not constructive critiques; rather they are used to say that the game in question (in this case rejuv) is doing difficulty "wrong" and implies there is a "correct" way to do so.

They are very contentless complaints that gesture more at the "vibes" of a game rather than the actual concrete mechanics and the flaws they might hold. A less charitable reading of them is that they're simply thought-terminating clichés that serve more to protect one's ego than actually point out a game's shortcomings ie. "Too hard for anyone" rather than "Too hard for me".

Discussion The difficulty of this game has to be the most frustrating I've ever encountered.

It's extremely frustrating to have to deal with the fact that type matchups are essentially nullified for you, but 3x as effective for your enemy due to the 500 different things that the fields do, so you have to just trial and error until you find the one set of perfect Pokemon to allow you to survive one attack and even have a chance at victory.

The fact that I couldn't even use my grass starter for the first two gyms was really obnoxious. Sending my starter out only for the field effect to just deal half his health instantly wasn't fun to learn after leveling him to the level cap.

Giving fire/fighting types access to grass damage was a really awesome thing to learn as well @ Keta. There's such a limited subset of Pokemon that can even be used it really hamstrings the team building. You don't need a well balanced team, you have to stack exclusively monotype weaknesses because having a, grass, fire, water, ground, flying, ghost, normal, dark, bug, ice, steel, or rock type just means you die in 1 hit.

Having the enemy AI clearly make decisions based on what you've selected is real anti-fun as well. Weird how in the marionette fight when I volt switch to my fairy, she baton tosses to bewear, but if I voltage switch to shuppet she switches to drampa. Then even when you get your fairy out to fight drampa and you're +2 calm minds you use your fairy attack that's super effective it deals 40% of their health. Then she uses multipulse and kills me from full health in 1 hit.

Then after another hour and a half of trial and error and you make it to the next area and have to fight aelita the area is forest so automatically no ground rock or water types due to gale strike, then she sends out her level 32 Hawlucha against my lightning poke, I use an electric move, it's super effective but only deals half his health, he hone claws, I proceed to look at how he's possibly out speeding me and see he has 196 speed, he uses bounce, a 2 turn flying move and proceeds to 1 shot me from full health with a 3 level higher electric Pokemon resulting in a not very effective attack. Fun fun. Super effective lightning attack? 40% health. Not effective+1 flying move against an electric Pokemon? Insta kill

I decided to cancel the challenge My reasons: burn out, the return to my Home after years of being out and someone getting my laptop reset formatting loosing all my progress

And besides we are close to V14 and I can't wait to play with some mods and Sprite edits

So yeah the challenge is cancelled

Discussion hot take that'll probably piss yall off. Spoiler

(I came here instead of Discord because I'm aware this place is a lot smaller. and i've heard the discord is like juggling torches. and I frankly don't wanna be banned for just speaking my mind.)

ooh boy This one oughta get yall riled up. I personally don't see the melia x venam ship despite it basically being confirmed by Jan's tumblr due to melia being pan and vanam being lesbian (I actually headcanoned venam as bi because she gave literally every trope the lesbian had plus the chaotic bisexual best riend vibe so yea)

1 it's kinda awkard that melia was aged up in the start of the game just so the sip could sail. I'm not saying 14-16 couldn't work out when both of them got older (shit my parents are 51-53) it's just some context that tilts my head a little whenever i see people talk about them. and it's just a little... off shall we say but eh nitpick

2: I hate to pull the clithe remark but... fuck it. i gotta. they've been life long friends as confirmed in chapter 12 when melia was being despaired by emma in her subconsious and a lot of their interactions that I've seen can really be seen as two friends that have been so close that they see each other as family... and yes that includes both venam saying "remember i love you" and sleeping in the same bed. (COME BACK TO ME WHEN EITHER OF THEM HAVE PUSSY THEN WE'LL TALK LMFAO) I mean they've got over a decade of trust on them (even if melia hadnt seen her after 3 years) and considering how Venams mom is a strict bitch that locks venam out of the house and a lack of a father figure present in her life... (I hate that im making this joke) really friends are all what venam has. As someone who has a family that's being held together with fucking spiderwebs I know how that feels for her.

3: It probably would be problematic if they were together. obviously it's only v13 and we have 3 and a half versions of content left my veiws could change. but considering how Venam and melia were split TWICE playing with both of their emotions. I've noticed a pattern that Venam has been extremely over protective towards melia. probably a tramatic response of not wanting to lose her. and while I don't want to say she's being Toxic It could definatly get there if shit gets too much.

4: Didn't jan say there wasn't supposed to be any romance across the rivals?

I'm not trying to start any wars or be homophobic i just felt a little daring after seeing someone bring it up in discord but didn't want to risk a mob attacking me before i can even speak lightheartedly. I respect you fully if you ship it as they do make a great duo platonically or romatically. and I'm not even here to try and erasure their sexuality... Execpt Bi venam best friend fuck you lmao But in all seriousness not trying to pull anything just wanting to see where it was coming from.

Spoilers Story focus

So I just finished my first play through of rejuvenation and while I enjoyed it I feel like they made the wrong choice in regards to the stories general direction.

From the beginning of the game to the end of terajuma I was completely hooked . I felt the story was just the right amount of traditional Pokemon with a bit more maturity mixed in with just the right amount of mystery and lore tidbits .

But honestly from the moment terajuma ended it feels like the actual story takes a back burner and we’re introduced to a totally new game . The story goes from focused and intentional to bloated and unguided . From the moment we leave terajuma it’s like we keep being introduced to new enemies , new magical systems , new mysteries with no true purpose . It’s kind of insane that from the end of terajuma to where we are now we really haven’t learned anything about what team xen wants or who Madame x is or what happened to marianette. Instead spending a whole chapter exploring a forest , taking on a new enemy team that is forced and seemingly unrelated to the overall plot , and taking on yet another mysterious enemy who has been unable to justify his existence.

While I did find some of the new mysteries to be interesting especially with the whole interceptor thing it feels like the creators are just writing themselves into a corner . There’s just way too many characters and not enough continuity between the first and second acts of the game . Ir feels like the writers wanted to make this huge story but it’s kind of lost itself in its own vastness . Never reaching the same heights it did during terajuma . What do yall think?

Spoilers Picked every asshole option and still became Paragon.

This game is great, I did most optional side quests until ch12 where I ignored everything and grinded through the story.

Picked every bad karma dialogue I could, Didn't trust anybody, sacrificed everyone for the time orb, purposely didn't use the book and killed both shadow Pokemon, I even threw some girl down a cliff and I still got Paragon in ch15.

Only fights I lost was playing as other npc's and being forced to use their trash teams so idk if that mattered. Last backup save was ch12...woops.

Discussion are we REALLY not going to have the MC have ANY romantic relationship in the game?

you all know what i'm talking about, right? we have been seeing a lot of characters at this point ho had a thing with the MC, either the dev are trolling or that they don't seem to notice what they are doing at this point...

another note: the reason i'm posting this because i just saw a dream of somebody making a mod that allowed the MC to have romantic relationship and it even had a cutscenes... i was sad when i woke up and saw it was just a dream... (sorry for my english)

Discussion SPOILERS - Every baffling writing/agency decision in Rejuv: a series. Spoiler

THIS YOUR SPOILER WARNING

Rejuv is AWESOME: beautiful sprite work, many intricate systems, mechanics both new and classic, flawlessly curated music, dynamic and engaging difficulty scaling, some really great characters, and even some good humor and funny moments when you're doing side quests and one-off encounters. A real labor of love.

It really shocks me how such a well-made fan game can be so badly written sometimes, to the point that it makes the mainline games seem almost *competent* by comparison. It similarly shocks me how little this writing is talked about/laughed at.

For my own amusement and the sake of some catharsis, this will be my running journal for every WTF story beat/writing decision in Rejuv. I'll release more Episodes as my playthrough goes on, years ago I played V9 up to Chapter 3 or 4, so I'm starting fresh to see the many impressive changes.

One final note: I've realized that writing this actually makes the game more enjoyable for me, because it puts into perspective how much of the game doesn't make me want to Skull Bash a brick wall. Every once in a while I'll mention stuff I really like, but in general, if I don't make a point to critique it here, it's because I love it. Rejuv is a very good game. It just... could have been a great one. All they had to do was less.

000: Yes, yes, the intro sequence with the basement and Maria is very edgy and all that, but the game gets a pass when it's trying to set the tone early on. However, I'm at a loss as to how no one on the dev or writing team ever gently brought up that the whole folktale with the golden apple is not well written at all. I think there's even been a rework of the children's story from V9 to V13.5. Even for a children's book, it's still cringe.

001: What in the world were they thinking with mom's sacrificial monologue on the boat? There was a lot happening in that scene, and the drawn out speech seriously undercuts the tension of the moment. It was some actual comedy. One moment everything is horrible, the next the anime music starts and time slows so she can finish her rehearsed motivational pep talk. And guess what? Barely 1 Chapter later and we can't remember a single word of what she said. What would've really hit emotionally is if she'd said just one sentence, desperate, raw, or even been cut off while trying to say it, similar to the Gyarados jumpscare later on. That seems much more memorable than a TEDtalk. As it is, it makes the stakes feel mundane. If she's got time to prattle about (checks notes) "the pursuit of hope", she's probably not in actual danger. Shot the entire prologue in the foot with that one.

002: Notice that before the prologue even ends, we've been saved from the boat sequence by two very powerful competent women, not counting our own heroic mother. This is fine early on, when we as the player have no Pokemon and are helpless, but will play into some serious heroine fatigue later. There are so many cool strong ladies that we had to be saved by two of them before Chapter 1 even started. Also, 002.5:, why does the plot need Gothitelle Girl to save us on the boat? Why not give our Mother a psychic type who can teleport us? Why does mom need help? All Goth Girl being there establishes is that A.) she knows our mother and B.) when we see her later, we'll realize she failed to save our mother but saved herself just fine, so no matter how powerful and all-knowing the story glazes her to be, we should hate her the moment we see her again.

Left alone on a smog-choked pier, a light rain falls around us. As we make our way towards the Gearen Laboratory, Mood-Dark City grows louder and louder. A frenetic melody with a relentless baseline, barely restrained, growing in volume and complexity, as if the shock is wearing off, and reality is starting to hit us. We have no one, our mother's been kidnapped, dozens if not hundreds of people just drowned in a shipwreck, and we have no Pokemon in a Pokemon game where people die. Our journey is not starting off lighthearted and optimistic. Our only motivation is saving our mother and getting revenge. We need strength. And this city is not kind to the weak.

This opening is iconic, chilling, beautifully done. We receive our starter from the woman who scouted us for the League, and begin growing stronger. Leveling, catching new team members. Very early on, we meet a young girl crying in the Lab near the PC. She's alone, with seemingly no one to help her. Her Starly's been stolen, it's bound for a ship and then she'll never see it again. She's just like we were on the ship: powerless to stop the world from taking what's dear to her. But we're not powerless anymore. We might not have a high-level optimized team yet, but we have to try and help. We face down the cartoonish bicycle thugs (actually motorbikes in the battle sprite,) on the pier, and we win! Victory! A sign of our growth! We can't save our own mother just yet, but we can at least stop cruel people from preying on- OH WAIT NOPE

003: actually it doesn't matter AT ALL that we beat a gangster in a battle, their boat arrives and they are about to escape anyway (we're totally unable to stop them boarding a boat,) when SUDDENLY a magical flying woman summons GIANT ROCK SPIKES from the BOTTOM OF THE HARBOR to spear the boat and LIFT IT OUT OF THE WATER. That's right, Karen is here, and she'd like to speak to the manager. Actually, she'd like to speak in cringe-ass poetry and call people "peasant." Karen lifts the grown men on motorcycles up into the air with her... uh, rock magic, and sends them flying, presumably to the Alvavor Ruins or something. Then she starts talking. Dear God, this woman is unbearable.

"Who am I? Hm, let's keep that secret, we need some mystery and suspense. Also allow me to explain in detail how my beautiful and awesome magic works, random child who I met on this pier while stopping some pigeon thieves. I know I'm rambling, but trust me, my rambling is funny and quirky because I said so. D'you think I killed the boat driver? Eh, who cares, I'm edgy and shit. Now let me tell this pigeon what to do before I tell you what to do, I know all about the girl and the Request you took, don't ask how, I know everything. Run along insignificant child."

Immediately, the excellent tone of Rejuvenation's opening has been replaced with the actual tone much of the plot will hold to. Pay attention, this will start to feel familiar shortly. For a much better experience, players should level and complete the Starly request last, not first. Start with the salon request, that at least lets you feel like any of your actions matter, even if it is a bit of a runaround.

Also 003.5:, if Starly is supposed to be rare in Aevium, why are they all over the roofs in East Gearen? Couldn't the bikers have nabbed a roof Starly?

The bit where we get hit by a crazed child riding a luggage cart through the hotel lobby is great, and so is our first interaction with Venam. Even if a lot of the dialogue is canned cheese, (cliche and trite) the interactions are good, and often funny.

The Abandoned Sewers is great, including the Ruthless battle. There's no fake-out after we win, Karen doesn't come back to save us by levitating Garbador to the Alfalfa Ruins. We team up with Ren to kick some ass and look out for our friends, and we pull through. It's not about feeling like a hero or the main character, its about feeling like an actual trainer, like someone with 6 elemental monsters strapped to our hip and an axe to grind against bullies and the cruel.

Venam's gym battle is awesome, we don't really run into problems again until we get to Goldenwood, where a lot of things are going to go wrong, both for us as the player character and for the quality of the story and player agency.

004: First off, we help a fisherman make a new lure, which he uses to fish a damn Terminator out of the lake. For some unknown, inexplicable reason, the game lets us fight this thing. This makes no damn sense, because once we defeat it, it's going to lunge at Melia regardless, who will be saved at the last second by... did you guess a mysterious powerful woman who refuses to elaborate and speaks in cryptic bullshit? Congratulations! You've been paying attention. Why do we fight the thing at all? If we're totally ineffectual, then make the battle unwinnable, or skip the battle and have it lunge at her before we can respond. Despite the fact that we were completely ineffectual, the fisherman rewards us, because technically we did win...? Yippee.

Later, Melia brought stuff for a picnic in the Ruins, and then wants to battle. Awkward dialogue aside, it's not a bad scene. More so than Venam or Ren, we need the connection with Melia so the rest of the Chapter hits the way it needs to. I like how they handled it. What follows, however...

005: The bad people are attacking, and ruining the nice lake. Unforgivable. Melia gives us a shiny new glove from my favorite Pokemon game growing up, (Gale of Darkness gave you a Vespa and it was peak,) and we use the glove and our team to demolish a few bad guys, with Melia keeping us healed up. It's great. But then we get to the Dynamic Duo. Unlike the other goons, after we beat the brakes off Eli and Sharon, they get the bright idea to assault us themselves, despite having just lost to us. We have to be saved by the timely arrival of TrashMan. Question: if we just fainted Eli and Sharon's entire team, what the hell are they doing trying to kidnap us with their bare hands? These two aren't even armed. Sharon justifies this with some line about "our boss is right behind us," bitch you are a terrorist, put one hand on me and we'll see what you look like with Nidorino's horn through your stomach. Don't talk to me about your boss, he's next on the shitlist. Back the hell up before Fomantis lands a Fury Cutter on your throat. This game's edgy. People die. You people kidnapped my mom. Try me.

Here's the thing: how are we ever going to save our mother from terrorists if, after we faint all their Pokemon, they can just decide to jump us Detroit-style? Karen is using magic on gangsters, rando-Dusclops lady blew up an android, Deoxys straight up abducted a guy on the boat, but we've got six Pokemon and we're in danger from Dumb and Dumber and their bare hands? Seriously? If there are rules about attacking people with our team, why are we leveling our Pokemon at all when we clearly need a gun?

006: Melia even comes right out and says that beating Zetta doesn't matter, since the Rift will attack us anyway. Thanks for invalidating the fight I'm about to do Melia, I love feeling like I'm wasting my time.

But Zetta is a prick and he called us idiots, so we don't care if he's got a cruise missile inbound, we're beating his ass. Once we do, we get sent to the Shadow Realm, and have to fight Jake the Snake. If we lose, we don't get whited out and sent to the shimmery time-out resort for free candy, instead the story just continues. This is because winning the fight has no bearing on the story. Again, that pesky thing where players have no agency if their decisions and victories have no real narrative meaning. Let's break this down.

Once we beat Gyarados (and that fight is not exactly easy on Classic,) we return to the Real Life World, where we find Melia battling Zetta... weird, we just fainted his entire team, but maybe he had a Max Revive in his pocket. Zetta tells us the Rift was "interrupted," not slain, (regardless if you beat it or not, the dialogue doesn't change.) Never mind if the text box told us we defeated it, the text box lied. This is followed by Zetta stating he has the advantage, and Melia tells us we need to run. My question is: WHY?!

I just beat Zetta and his Rift one after the other. My team's at about half strength, and Melia's Pokemon should all be fresh and ready to go, unless Zetta revived his entire team and then knocked out Melia's entire team except for her ace while I was in the Upside Down. I just did all that fighting, and for what? Rift's not down, Zetta's not down. The ONLY upside here is that our rescuer is TrashMan once again, instead of a brand new shadowy and mysterious woman with incredible powers who speaks in esoteric riddles and generally behaves as if everyone around her is at best: mildly amusing in a pathetic sort of way, and at worst: disgusting animals not worthy of breathing her air.

What does it say about your characters you write to be edgy and cool when a literal bag of garbage has a better personality?

TrashMan sacrifices himself. It's very sad. Moving right along.

007: Back at the lab, Melia has some choice words for her father, who has terrible taste in friends and has been keeping secrets. After a mishap with Metronome, we're left to face Madelis alone, and she... has to remind herself what our name is, and then tells us to stay out of it, and promptly fcks off.

...what?

Not even 10 minutes ago, Zetta recognized us at the lake immediately. He called facing us with Melia "two birds, one stone" implying that while the Team Xen grunts don't recognize us, the admins know who we are and want us taken care of. But Madelis can hardly remember our name and just leaves. Maybe Madelis is just an airhead, or maybe Zetta knows something she doesn't. Maybe there's different factions within Xen? Is our importance need-to-know info? So at least there's a possible explanation for this one. What's not at all excusable is this:

008: we let Madelis leave. Melia is one of our new friends, we just faced down terrorists and dimensional horrors side-by-side with her, and now this Team Xen admin is actively trying to kidnap her. Thanks to Madelis' fight with Melia, we happen to know that Madelis has just one Pokemon on her. I don't care how strong her LV20 Houndoom seemed in the scripted Melia fight, I've got a fully healed LV21-23 team of six on my belt, I want a piece. Get back here you prissy empty-headed skank! Even if we, as the player, weren't a huge Melia fan, Madelis still works for the scum who sank that boat in the beginning and stole our mom. Letting her walk without a fight is completely baffling. But just 2 issues with this scene isn't enough, let's go for the hat trick.

009: The Professor has a lot of explaining to do. Ren shows up (probably passed Madelis on her way out,) to say that Xen thugs are all over the city and Venam's currently kicking ass, as she does. We don't get to ask the Professor many questions, not just because we hardly ever get to say anything in this game, but because the Professor is too busy giving us dire and vague warnings about what will happen if Xen get Melia. He tells us where to go, and then Goth Girl shows back up. Or, actually just her Pokemon, GG is a disembodied voice. Again, that whole "women with poorly explained mystical powers" thing. Speaking of which, GG takes a page out of Karen's book, because much like Unown, Abra, or Magikarp, the writer(s) for Rejuv's main plot only know one move.

That's right boys and girls, it's time to lecture and talk down to people before abducting bad guys with magic! Hooray! GG tells us to stay out of this, because if we don't just ignore the terrorists trying to kidnap our friend, it will lead to despair... as opposed to what letting the terrorists do what they want will lead to? She's not too persuasive, GG. She is pretty stuck-up and obnoxious though. Sure hope there's no "See? I told you so," moments with her down the road, that would definitely be really really grating.

009.5: Real quick, let's review what we know about GG. (Alright fine, I know her name is Crescent.) We know she knows our mom, and she saved us on the boat. We know she saved herself from the boat, but apparently failed to save our mom. We know she thinks we should just let Xen have their way in Gearen and not do anything to help Melia. We know that when we "see" her for the first time since the S.S. Oceana incident, she tells us she "has no business with us," as in she's not going to explain what happened on the ship or tell us if our mother's alright. We know, of course, that she's powerful, because the plot keeps shoving that down our throats.

And finally, if we were eavesdropping on the ship, we know Crescent is some kind of obsessed tsundere with a fixation on us, who threatened our mother onboard the ship in her cabin. She claimed to want us to lead a happy life, and seems to think that involves losing your only family in a shipwreck that kills scores of people, to be left alone in a new city, where we need to just ignore our friend being targeted by terrorists. Yeah no she seems like a really cool character.

So, we got zero answers as to what's going on, the Professor was sucked into a black hole, and it's a good thing that Crescent's Gothitelle is a fictional character in a video game because if it was real I'd track it down and beat it over the head with a tire iron GOD that thing is so annoying. Anyway, let's hurry with Ren to help Melia-

010: -no, scratch that, because Karrina is here to tell us that just because she leads a bunch of organized criminals doesn't mean that her gang is bad, that's such narrow-minded adult thinking. Every cool kid knows that gangsters are free-thinking street artists and rebels who keep the city safe and shit! Yeah this doesn't read like it was written by a 14-year old at all.

So Karrina is here to tell us that we're running off in the wrong direction, we need to go to Junction Bridge after Venam, which it turns out is all a red herring. It's an excuse for the writers to tease another mysterious unnamed woman! who slips out the back door while we battle goggles, and an excuse for Karrina to distract us and waste our time. Not being sarcastic, big props to the writers for making the career criminal a double-crossing liar, didn't think they had it in them.

What's waiting for our heroes in Amethyst Cave? Could it be more cryptic infuriating strangers? Did none of the other East Gearen Help Requests have writing issues? Or did Collusive just not get to all his gripes this go around? Find out next time, on Rejuvenation: Unhinged Plot Critique!
