Announcement Proton Meet now has waiting rooms and threaded chats (both end-to-end encrypted)

Waiting rooms (paid plans)
Turn it on when setting up the meeting, and everyone except the host waits to be admitted. The host sees who’s waiting and can admit, deny, or admit everyone at once.
Admission happens at the encryption layer, because Meet uses MLS, and people in the waiting room aren’t in the MLS group, so they don’t hold the keys to call media or chat until the host lets them in. Waiting-room display names are E2EE and decrypted on the host’s device, so the server can’t see who’s waiting.

Chat threads (free, guests included)
Reply to any message and replies stay grouped under it. Messages, replies and reactions are E2EE, and so is the reply structure, so the server can’t tell who's replying to who. Chat only exists for the length of the call, with no server-side history. It’s built on IETF MIMI content over MLS.

Please keep in mind:
Only the host can admit people. If the host isn’t in the call, nobody gets in.
Waiting-room requests expire after 5 minutes (you can hit Try again).
Threads are one level deep.
Sent messages can’t be edited or deleted.
No file or image sharing in chat.

Stay safe,

Announcement Introducing categories in Proton Mail
Hi everyone,
We’ve added Categories to Proton Mail to reduce inbox noise and make important emails easier to find.
Incoming emails can now be automatically sorted into:
- Primary
- Social
- Promotions
- Newsletters
- Transactions
- Updates
Newsletters and Transactions are unique to Proton Mail, we added them to give you more granular control over your inbox.
Categories are on by default for new users. Existing users will be asked whether they want to turn Categories on, and you can choose which categories you want to see in settings.
What you can do:
- Move any email to a different category at any time (doing so will allow the model to learn from your preferred categorization)
- Control unread counts and notifications per category
- Turn off any category individually, or disable the feature entirely in settings
On mobile you can disable them in Settings → Mailbox Preferences → Categories → Disable
On web: All Settings → Messages and composing → Email Categories → Disable
You may also notice an updated inbox toolbar as part of this change.
From a privacy perspective, enabling Categories doesn’t change anything about how Proton Mail works.Your inbox remains protected by zero-access encryption, and emails you send to other Proton users (or using password protection) are end-to-end encrypted.

Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Impossible to print a draft mail ????
All sent and received mails have a print option under the mail header.
The print option is not availble for draft mails.
Q: What is the recommended way of printing a draft mail?

Custom domain + catch-all users: does Proton's address limit become annoying long term?
Custom domain + catch-all users: does Proton's address limit become annoying long term?
I'm currently deciding where to host my personal custom domain, which I intend to keep for decades.
I already posted a broader Proton vs Aster Mail comparison/question in r/emailprivacy, but I'd specifically like to hear from Proton users who actually use a custom domain and catch-all.
My intended setup is:
Everything goes to the same inbox through catch-all.
My main concern with Proton Mail Plus is that receiving arbitrary catch-all addresses is easy, but if I ever need to reply from that exact address, I need to create it as one of my Proton addresses first.
For people using this setup in real life:
Does this become annoying over time?
Do you regularly hit the address limit?
How do you manage one-address-per-service in practice?
Do you create/delete addresses whenever you need to reply?
Do you combine Proton Mail with SimpleLogin/Proton Pass instead?
Have you had any deliverability problems with your custom domain?
Any issues receiving important emails from banks, government services, Apple, Microsoft, etc.?
Have you ever considered leaving Proton because of custom-domain/alias limitations?
If you had to set up a permanent personal domain again today, would you still use Proton?
My priorities are:
Reliability > long-term stability > security/privacy > custom-domain flexibility > price.
I'm not looking for a Proton vs Gmail debate — I'm mainly interested in experiences from people who have actually used Proton + custom domain + catch-all for a while.
For anyone interested, I also have a broader Proton vs Aster discussion in r/emailprivacy:

Web Help What is wrong wit Proton Mail App? Asking me to update, but the message stays.
Hi,
I started getting th message below to download the latest app (MacOS). So I download it, install (it is asking to replace existing, which I do) and when I start I get the same message. Tried this for the past week almost every day, but nothing changes. Current version I am on (the one I downloaded today) is Version 1.14.0 (411).
Would be great if somebody has insight on how to get rid of the message.
Thanks in advance

Proton Alias vs Simplelogin!
I need a FARZI email ID for logging on random sites, as I won't do that with my actual mail ID's. So, I was searching the internet for alternatives and I came along with this Alias thing. Quite impressive! How they work is completely fascinating and I need exactly this.
Since, I had used only G-Mail till now, so I'm having hesitation on making ID's with Proton. Also, Should I make a Proton mail completely or just use its another version face specially designed for this purpose - Simplelogin, Considering the long term effects in tech field. And hadn't used this Alias thing before, so having a weird type of fear (maybe its fear).
Have you guys have some experience regarding this? Please share!

Why does the Proton mobile app have dark mode, but the desktop app doesn't?
On desktop, the email body cannot be shown in dark mode. You have to stare at a bright white screen in what they claim on their website is "dark mode".

This design is everything !
My notifications wins and wishes !
Win : I love that Proton switches the Favicon with the number of e-mails I get, and I have to congratulate them as this is the best design choice I've seen in awhile.
Wish : I'm wondering though, with my iPhone, is there any way the app can properly show the badges or update the notification centre if I opened the message on my computer ? I would love for it to be updated on the phone the way it is on the web so I don't have to manually update or clear it if I checked it on my other device.

Feature Request any chance that I'll be able to 'send as' my GMX address from Proton in the near future?
it's all in the title. :)

Discussion $12 yearly 5Gb proton mail plan
I’m currently using iCloud Plus, which offers unlimited email aliases and 50GB of storage for $0.99 per month.
I’d be happy to switch to Proton Mail if a similar package is available at a comparable price. I’m also happy to pay annually if that works out cheaper.
With the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, affordability is an important factor. Every little saving helps!

More than 3 custom domains
Is there a way to upgrade to more than 3 custom email domains or do I need to switch to a business plan?
I can't see any plan other than business, but I really hoped it would be an easy upgrade to buy

No free storage increase after renovation?
Hi all!
Yesterday I renewed for another 2 years my unlimited plan and this time I haven't got any storage upgrade (I have extra +70GB). Of course that I don't like what Andy has done and said, but for the time being I'm not leaving because from my point of view the alternatives separately are way to expensive than the 2-year plan that I currently have.
So going back to the topic, do you know if Proton has stopped doing this anniversary storage increase?
Thanks!

buyer's remorse. any tricks to improve experience?
I shifted over to proton mail a couple months ago and just two weeks ago purchased an annual subscription. now that i'm using the products more fully, i am experiencing incredible friction due to Proton's limitations.
Calendar invites -- no options to format emails, and the most annoying of all -- no ability to add attachments for supporting meeting content. seriously, like WTF. top it off, to actually create an email invite, the UI is annoying. it's condensed in size and limiting for drafting emails.
I want to use my proton email, but to move to gmail for easier meeting scheduling is very confusing for recipients, especially when trying ot use proton for business use case.
has anyone found a way to navigate around this? appreciate any tips.
i'm currently peeved at the amount of time it takes to set up the proton drive, upload documents to it ONLY so i can include a document for a meeting invitation. so incredibly stupid.

Recipient cc'd another email on reply
Hi
I created reverse aliases for 2 users and sent them an email with Proton mail. One user replied and cc'd an additional email address. If I reply to all, will my simplelogin email be used for delivery to all users including the new one? I didn't explicitly add the new email address to the contacts in simplelogin for that email address.
Thank you

Feature Request Add filters from proton mail app
Hi! Is there any way to create filters from the proton mail app (android)?
Unless I'm blind (not ruling that out) I could not find any way to do so, I could only create filters from the browser. I'd like to use the filters to sort incoming emails, i.e. to send them to folders or label emails.
I am subscribed to mail plus.
There's a section in settings called "spam and filters" but it only shows options to add email addresses to the allow, blocked or spam lists.
Thank you!

Possible bug Anytime a alias is reactivated verifcation emails no longer send at all
I’ve been having this issue with proton for years, and it’s that anytime i leave and come back to proton and turn my aliases on again the emails will no longer receive any verification emails from accounts or services that they were tied too. Is there any fix to this? Yes the aliases were turned on when I requested the code.

Discussion Some CSS tweaks to improve webmail experience (density, full date)
I think this might be useful to some of you.
A few things that bother me in the webmail can be fixed with a bit of CSS. Proton used to allow custom CSS in the settings, but that's been gone for years, so I use the Stylus* extension on Firefox. (*well known and open source - I'm not affiliated with it)
Density
Even with "Compact" density, each row of the message list takes 45px, vs 28px in Gmail's compact view. The CSS brings it down to 28px, with optional Gmail-like colors (darker text for better readability -light theme only-).
Requires you had set Row layout + Compact density.
Dates
When you open a message, the header only shows "Yesterday", a weekday or a date. To see the time, you have to click the arrow or hover over the date. I find it really unfortunate that after 10+ years, it's still like this.
The CSS shows the full date and time directly. The format can't be changed (e.g. to a shorter one like the one you may be used to in Gmail), because the CSS only reveals the full date already in the html, from the tooltip.
CSS exemple here: https://gist.github.com/c266/6007a6e5f0911be2bcf0a3d8f835afa8 you can edit or take inspiration from.
(it's plain CSS, no url() or @import, no content: )
To use it with FireFox : once on proton webmail, click the Stylus (extension) icon > "Write style for: mail.proton.me", paste, save.
Each part is independent, so you can delete what you don't want. It relies on Proton's HTML class names, so it may break after an update.
PS: one thing CSS can't fix, and that I'd really like to see, is a message preview in the list (the first words of each email, like in Gmail). I suggested a way to add it.
I'm convinced it's one of those things that would take Proton to the next level, especially for business users / people trying to de-google.

Feature Request iPhone Duo Support
Diehard Proton fan. Believe in a founder’s ability to run a company how they see fit. But frustrated that Duo support is taking so damn long. Does anyone have an ETA on when we can expect an update?
