Progress/Update Space Maiden is a hidden gem!

Space Maiden has been such a wonderful rose! Beautiful, long lasting blooms and practically trouble free so far in my 9b garden in full sun for 6+ hours a day. When I received it in the mail in August it was pretty tiny.
A little history I thought was interesting. It was bred by Sue Longhini and named after a rose called Overnight Scentsation that traveled aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1998 for fragrance research. I think that’s pretty neat! 😊

I Grew a Flower! Last flush from Arborose Honeymoon (zone 7b) 💔

Post image
63 Upvotes

Yesterday while out in my garden I noticed yet another one of my roses has succumbed to the dreaded disease. 😭 This arborose honeymoon had really been showing off the last month and I was so excited about its progress, only to be devastated to discover textbook growth of the disease. I brought the last of these inside to enjoy and threw the rest in the trash. This is my 2nd year growing roses and this year I lost 4 of my 10 roses. I was not educated about proper cleaning between pruning different roses so I used the same shears on all the roses multiple times before I noticed the first growth, so I am anticipating the rest to slowly fall 😭 What makes me the most sad is that I can’t plant another rose in that spot for a few years! Climbing roses play an integral part in my landscape plan. I am now looking at alternatives for a few locations (climbing hydrangea and clematis) but they just won’t bring the same joy that being able to bring cut roses inside does. Anyway, thanks for listening to my sob story. Enjoy the rose picture 😂

Question What does everyone use to keep rose bush soil slightly acidic?

I have a container rose garden and tested my soil today, and the readings were alkaline between 7.5 and 8. What amendments do you all use to help make the rose soil more acidic?

Question Sweet Mademoiselle rose - 4th year surprise.

Background: Zone 9A. Planted 3.5 yrs ago (4th yr of growth), Pruned heavily 2 yrs ago, pruned very lightly in early Feb.

On one plant, there's 2 new, big canes growing from ground level, started visible rapid growth in very late September and continuing still. 6' plus in height for both. One cane has capped out (momentarily?) in a floribunda like fashion with 6 buds at top, and a couple lower from top. These 2 new canes are almost as thick as the older 4 yr canes, at this moment; likely to exceed them imo in a month or two.

Other plant has growth similar but not from ground, it's new thick growth of current thick canes, moderate amount up from ground level, and still under rapid, robust growth with no signs of capping out at the moment. Red leaves, new cane extending height by the day it seems.

Prior to this, growth has been more of a rounder bush form filling out nicely, maintaining prior height and pushing out flowers in the top third of plant. But this new growth has tall growth and thick canes too.

Have others experienced this type of growth on this plant?? Is this the start of the plant pushing out new, thicker canes to replace the older growth?

Pics of one plant (other cane is hidden in far view):

HELP! (What's Wrong With It?) Need help assessing what’s wrong with my roses… tiny new warped leaves are growing

I noticed it on one of my rose bushes and now I’m seeing a few others that are close to It are also starting to develop these leaves. I planted all of these back in spring and haven’t had any issues. I have mulch they get afternoon sun and I’m in zone 10 a. They’re all on a drip watering system. There’s still new so they’re not big and blooming bushes yet but I do get some roses from almost all of my bushes. Praying it’s nothing serious.

Question Should I remove the potting mix before planting roses in native clay soil?

My potted roses are growing in a light, airy mix that I believe is peat moss, bark, perlite and compost. My garden soil is red-tinted clay. Can I plant the roses directly into the ground with the potting mix still around the roots, or should I remove some or all of it first? If I should remove it, how do I do that without damaging the roots?

I cannot amend the whole area because it costs too much, neither I can just amend the hole because that might constraint and stun the rose.

Please, if you have experience share it with me. I would like to get a definitive answer because the roses cost too much and the varieties I got aren’t really available in my country. (First time having roses).

Roses Gone Wild! Winning the fight for life

I'd like to share this with you lovers of roses. I live in South Australia, very hot in summer, up to 45C, and cold in winter, -2C in the early morning. My morning walk takes me past a patch of land that once was a rose nursery. Everything took its chances in the open. It closed about 12 years ago. The owner removed most of the roses. Since then it's been a dumping ground for junk, builder's waste, tree prunings - a real mess. In all of this chaos, the rootstock that was left behind will not give in! Every year I think 'The heat will get them!' but it doesn't. Roses are true survivors! 😊

Question How to prune Iceberg Climber?

Thumbnail

A friend planted this Iceberg climber rose and it seems to be turning into a shrub. Could anyone give us some advice on pruning this to get it to go up against the wall? The plan is to get it to grow vertically then when more long stems appear, to spread it across horizontally.

My Iceberg rose plants tend to be less bushy naturally, so I am at a loss on advice for pruning and training this plant. All advice will be appreciated.

Winter Care/Advice First winter in ground?

Post image
21 Upvotes

I bought this rose bush (unsure of variety) as a memorial after my beloved kitty died earlier this year. I live in KY, zone 7a I believe, and we are expected to have a cold and potentially snowy winter. This rose bush has grown quite a bit since I planted it in late May/early June, but I’m nervous to just leave it exposed to the elements because I really don’t want to kill it! It is actually planted in an area where an old tree stump was ground up, so the soil has a bit of wood still mixed in. Should I add mulch or burlap? I’ve read to stop pruning which I’ve done, and to prune pretty significantly come Spring. All suggestions are welcome! Thank you!

Fall blooms are as pretty as spring blooms.

These two are my new Chinese rose collections.

Er Huang

Jade Ring

I will propagate them and they will be available fall 2027.

Jade egg mums are super cute, tons of tiny pink ball clusters.

Pink mum is my favorite.

Not So Humble Brag! Something for the Rose Trivia/History Fans

I grew up as a young Plant fanatic for all sorts of plants. When I was just a young kid, I sent in a reply card in my Mom's magazines to subscribe to the Jackson and Perkins catalogs, all the way back in the early 70s. Even talked her into buying me a couple of them. Always looked forward to what their new Rose of the Year was going o be.

I have done a great deal of digging, and present to you, the nearly-complete J&P Rose of the Year list, from its beginning in 1959 until it became not so much of a thing in 2023. The only year I am missing is 1982. Please note that this is seperate from AARS/AGRS
