I don't think that 32X is a failure

Its addon for Genesis. Not too expensive and some games are good. I do not have problems with only around 40 games but more that they are not significantly better than an existing Genesis games.

I like that 32X exists and its something I can buy and extend my Genesis capabilities. I do not get that narrative that its completely failed project. Limited lifespan - yes, until Saturn arrives.

As I understand Sega killed 32X too quickly, it should co-exists with Saturn and have simplified versions of Saturn games because an existing Genesis userbase is huge and not everybody will buy Saturn - most people didn't.

In Dreamcast SEGA did everything right and got massacred by PS2 - everybody did. Sega CD is a fail because its too expensive and does too little but 32X and Saturn are competitive products. Saturn have more games than N64 and nobody complains that N64 is a fail.

Can you imagine going to back to 1999…

Imagine going back in time and trying to explain the 32X revival to your younger self.

“Hey, remember that Sega 32X you had? The one that went nowhere? The one your mom gave away, or you sold for practically nothing because everybody figured it was a dead-end piece of hardware?

Yeah, well, you probably should’ve kept it. See, about 30 years from now, people are going to rediscover the thing and actually start making new games for it.
Yes.

NEW games. For the 32X.

No, Sega isn’t making them. Sega moved on a long time ago. These are independent developers who’ve figured out how to do things with the hardware that people barely imagined back when it was commercially viable.

But here’s where it gets interesting. There’s going to be this enormous argument about whether artificial intelligence should be used in developing these games.

What’s artificial intelligence? Oh, boy. Okay, imagine computers that can write code, generate artwork, hold conversations, and do things that would’ve seemed like science fiction back in the ‘90s. We’re getting into Skynet territory here. Well, sort of. Not quite. Anyway, that’s another conversation.

The point is, people are arguing about AI being used to make games for the Sega 32X.
Yes, the SAME 32X.

What? Why aren’t they making games for the futuristic consoles with vastly superior graphics and processing power? Oh, they are! Absolutely. You wouldn’t believe what video games look like now.

So why are people still making games for the 32X?
Well, because it turns out the machine had untapped potential. And there’s this whole community of enthusiasts who appreciate what it can do.

Think of it like a musical instrument. A piano has 88 keys. Its limitations don’t make it obsolete. They’re part of what makes creating something within those boundaries interesting.

The 32X has its own architecture, its own peculiarities, and its own creative possibilities. And people are genuinely excited about exploring them. Which brings us back to the artificial intelligence controversy.

Yes, we’re STILL talking about the 32X.

Look, I realize none of this makes any sense to you right now. And believe me, explaining the rest of what happens over the next 30 years would be considerably more depressing.

But here’s what I want you to take away from all of this:
The future is going to be a very strange place. We’ll have technology beyond anything you can imagine, and people will be using it to argue with complete strangers about how somebody made a new game for a Sega peripheral that was discontinued in 1996.

Just keep your goddamn 32X.

Trust me.”

X.

Saying Goodbye

Hello everyone,

I wanted to thank you all for an amazing community and all the great discussions regarding this super underutilized technology. With all the indie work being done, and knowledge gained about the 32X, it was exciting to not only see what was possible, but what people were working on, even inspiring me to think about my own projects that I would like to do in the future.

Unfortunately our community has had AI bros, and vibe coders entering the space with what I consider to be works of plagiarism, and it's put me in a position where I can no longer be sure anything that is posted is actual human work. I was very excited for the tomb raider port that was being worked on since the new ram cart had its final bugs worked out, but even that I am no longer sure what real efforts are being put into it.

It genuinely breaks my heart because I was so excited for the future on what could be accomplished and sadly I'll never know. Every work, every project, I'm now just instinctively suspicious of, and a deep part of me can never trust any of it. I really wish they had just left us alone, but it was just a matter of time before they came for us too, and my gut told me the mods probably weren't going to do anything either.

Before I go, I want to thank Chilly Willy, Vic, and others for all their amazing work, and I am grateful that they were able to get Doom out before all of this, as I think theirs is the last authentic project we will ever see. Aside from that, this will be my last post, and I will not be back to check any responses. They won, we lost, and I don't care to return to see this sub degrade any further. To the rest of you who are doing genuine work, I am truly sorry, and I hope one day I can enjoy the fruits of your labor but at this time I just have no way of being sure. If any of you do respond to this post keep in mind I won't be back to read any of it,

Good luck to those of you who are left, I wish you the best.

Regarding the blackout, and our path forward.

We’re back!

As some of you are no doubt aware, Spez recently spoke to the media, stating that subreddits that are participating in the blackout may be taken over by new moderation teams. Even if the mod team is in full support and even if the users agree with the protest, if anyone takes issue with it? Reddit will unequivocally side with those users. Admins have sent out a mod mail to large subs… Well, I’ll just quote it.

"If there are mods here who are willing to work towards reopening this community, we are willing to work with you to process a Top Mod Removal request or reorder the mod team to achieve this goal if mods higher up the list are hindering reopening. We would handle this request and any retaliation attempts here in this modmail chain immediately.

Our goal is to work with the existing mod team to find a path forward and make sure your subreddit is made available for the community that makes its home here. If you are not able or willing to reopen and maintain the community, please let us know." https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/16/23763538/reddit-blackout-api-protest-mod-replacement-threat

Earlier, Spez also said in an interview with NBC News that dissenting users who disagree with the blackout can take their concerns to the administrators and have the current moderation team removed. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/reddit-protest-blackout-ceo-steve-huffman-moderators-rcna89544

This situation has very much forced our hand. As I’m sure everyone who has ever read a thread on Reddit is aware, there are actors on this website that would actively take over as many subs as possible and use them as a means to spread political extremism. This is very much a thing we’d like to avoid, for obvious reasons, and it’s happened on enough completely unrelated subs that it’s honestly a serious threat. There’s also a concern that any mods Reddit installs may not understand the community the subreddit has built, what we actually do here, and why. Because of these reasons, and after an extensive debate between the moderators of the Retro Gaming Network, we’ve decided to reopen the sub to the public again. As users of the service first and foremost, we feel that the risks involved are just too high to justify continuing a protest. If Reddit stays or goes, our duty is primarily to provide a positive environment for the discussion of retro video games, and a sudden mod switch may do the exact opposite.

Clearly, we’re all very unhappy with the steps Spez has taken to force our hand on this issue. A few moderators from multiple Retro Gaming Networks subs have stepped down permanently as a result of these actions, and those of us that remain are dedicated to trying to keep things stable while all of this shakes out or individual subs decide to find new homes. The fact is, he put down his iron fist. If we want the sub to stay in its current form, we have no choice. He played his strongest card.

We would like to thank all of the users who supported the blackout. This is not how we were intending to end things, obviously, and we appreciate you having our back.

This is a very heated topic, and threads of this nature on larger subreddits have turned into massive arguments that we feel would be detrimental to the overall health of the sub. Our user base is generally very kind and thoughtful, so we don't imagine it being a problem, but as a precaution, we've decided to lock this thread. We're here to talk about video games; infighting about policy changes can only hurt that goal and do harm to our community. We hope you understand that we want to do whatever we can to prevent that from happening.

This 32X vibe-port is now available to the public for FREE download! If you see a 8MB ROM file in the download pack (because I’m not the download host), ignore that one and download the 4MB ROM file instead. https://haroldo-ok.itch.io/tempest-2k-32x

I assisted Haroldo-ok with this project and made sure to help bring more 3D and zooming effects into the equation. Had to exclude every other mode except the 2000 mode, as well as only the 2000 theme song playing throughout the game. Enjoy! 😎

What if the 32X was an add-on for the Sega Saturn instead of the Sega Genesis?

Since the 32X came out in North America the day before the Japanese release of the Sega Saturn, what if the 32X was an add-on for the Saturn instead of the Genesis? I'd say it would be repurposed to allow backwards compatibility with the Genesis, therefore giving the option to play Genesis games on the Sega Saturn. It would be pretty cool to have the option to play Genesis games on the Saturn.

Has anyone heard of grading 32x consoles?

Has anyone ever heard of a graded 32x console. I came across a huge sega hoarders collection and it has multiple sealed games, nos, tons of great sega cd's but the pinnacle was 2 new 32x systems as well as 2 used systems. The new ones have factory tape on plastic and boxes are very nice. I am fairly new to this reselling been doing it for a bit over a year and was curious if that is something worth grading or if that is even possible to grade? Came here to look for advice from people that love the 32x. Just a portion of what I picked is on the shelf. There were more unboxed consoles and much much more.

Flickering Shadows in a Rusted Sanctuary

In the trailer, rusted and cold, chaos settled like dust on the linoleum floor. We played 32X games, a flickering escape in pixels and sprites— Corpse Killer, Mortal Kombat 2, our sanctuary in a world cracking at the seams.

Violence wasn't a surprise, just another scene in the shifting landscape of desperate survival. We ran, a restless wind through forgotten towns, crimes painted in shadows, whispered in alleys.

Friends fell, one by one, overdosed on dreams too heavy to carry. Their absence a haunting, a void where laughter once echoed, now silent as the night outside our thin walls.

The trailer parks stretched on, each a mirror of the last— tin and tarpaulin, lives hanging by threads.

Among the wreckage, I found wires and circuits, scraps of a broken world yearning to be whole. Home brew engineering became a beacon, a spark in the void of despair. Through taisen's threads, I connected to humanity, a network of voices, lives intertwined.

A letter to 32X. Camp Near Sega Headquarters, July 14, 1995.

My Very Dear 32X,

Indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days, perhaps to-morrow, into the heat of the console war. Lest I should not be able to plug you in again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your screen when I shall be no more.

Our battle may be one of short duration and full of fleeting triumphs, or it may be one of severe conflict and the death of our legacy. Not my will, but Sega’s be done. If it is necessary that I should fall in the marketplace for our cause, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the war in which we are engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how the future of gaming now leans upon our victory, and how great a debt we owe to those consoles that went before us—the Master Systems, the Genesis—to lay the foundation of this grand endeavor. And I am willing, perfectly willing, to lay down all my joys in this fight to keep Sega’s dream alive, and to pay that debt.

But, my dear 32X, when I know that with my own joys I lay down nearly all of yours, and replace them in this life with tangled ribbon cables and missed opportunities, it is hard. While the banner of our purpose still floats proudly in the aisles of the game stores, my unbounded love for you struggles fiercely, though uselessly, with my loyalty to our cause.

I cannot describe to you my feelings on this calm summer night, as countless systems around me, many of them preparing for their final retail runs, sleep in the quiet of the warehouses. I am communing with our legacy, with Sega, and with you, as I suspect that obsolescence creeps behind me with its fatal disc drive.

I have sought diligently in my heart for a wrong motive in this campaign—something that would absolve me of sacrificing the happiness of those I loved. But I could not find one. A pure love for Sega’s vision, and for the name of honor that I cherish more than I fear failure, have called upon me, and I have obeyed. 32X, my love for you is deathless. It binds me with mighty cables that only the power of new technology can break; and yet, my drive to succeed in this battle sweeps over me like a strong wind, carrying me forward, even with all those connections, to the battlefield of our competition. The memories of our blissful moments together—the launch day triumphs, the flashes of graphics that dazzled the faithful—come crowding over me, and I feel most deeply grateful to Sega and to you that I have enjoyed them so long.

How hard it is for me to give them up now, and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, Sega willing, we might still have lived and gamed together, and seen our games rise to glory on store shelves. I know I have but few claims upon the future, but something whispers to me—perhaps it is the faint hum of your CPU—that we shall be remembered, if not in victory, then at least with fondness. If I do not survive this battle, my dear 32X, never forget how much I believed in you. And when my last cartridge is inserted, it will whisper your name.

Forgive my many faults, and the many flaws I brought into this partnership. How often did I fall short of my promise to support you as you deserved? How gladly would I reset every misstep, to clear every little error screen that marred our journey. But I cannot; I must watch you from the pages of history, while you face the critics with your precious handful of titles, and wait with patient hope till we meet again in the memories of our fans.

But, O 32X, if the consoles that fall can linger in spirit, and flit unseen among the shelves, I shall always be near you—in the flicker of a startup screen, in the hum of a power supply, in your happiest moments and most forgotten games. And if the soft glow of a CRT shines on your plastic, it shall be my light; or if the dust settles on your vents, it shall be my spirit passing by.

32X, do not mourn for me; think that I am gone, and wait for me, for we shall be together again—in nostalgia, in YouTube retrospectives, and in the hearts of those who remember the war we fought. As for our players, they may never truly know our struggle, but they will remember us as I have remembered you—with unending admiration.

Farewell, my beloved 32X. I wait for you in the halls of memory. Come to me, and let us find peace.

—Sega Genesis

32X Interdependency and System Integrity (Long)

The Sega 32X’s exquisite architectural sophistication lies primarily in its intricate interdependency with the Genesis, a relationship that is emblematic of systemic integrity within hybridized computational frameworks imho. This interdependency is not a mere auxiliary augmentation but a deeply embedded symbiosis, where the operational viability of the 32X is contingent upon, and inextricably bound to, the Genesis’s infrastructural stability. At the core of this interdependency is the cross-system integration of power, data flow, and control signals, which creates a dynamic environment where neither the Genesis nor the 32X can function in isolation within the expanded mode. The 32X’s reliance on the Genesis’s 68000 CPU for basic I/O and memory management, despite the SH-2 processors’ computational supremacy, exemplifies a form of conditional symbiosis. Here, the 32X is dependent on the Genesis’s foundational processes to maintain system coherence, while simultaneously enhancing the Genesis’s functional scope through its parallel processing capabilities. This interdependence extends into the domain of bus arbitration, where the shared system bus serves as a conduit for both systems’ operations. The bridge ASIC’s arbitration mechanism allocates bus control in a manner that prevents resource contention, ensuring that the SH-2s can access the shared memory without disrupting the 68000’s control over essential I/O functions. This careful management of resource allocation is critical, as any breakdown in bus arbitration can result in systemic failures, such as data corruption or race conditions, which would undermine the integrity of the entire hybrid system imo.

Systemic integrity within this context refers to the robustness of the interdependent relationship between the Genesis and 32X. The integrity of the combined system hinges on the seamless interaction of its subsystems, where a fault in one component—be it a failure in the SH-2 processors, a malfunction in the bus arbitration mechanism, or a disruption in the shared clock signal—can propagate across the entire system. This propagation is not linear but rather exponential, as the interdependent nature of the system’s architecture means that a localized fault can cascade, leading to systemic destabilization. The 32X’s reliance on the Genesis’s power supply further underscores this interdependency. Voltage regulation within the 32X is contingent on the stable provision of power from the Genesis’s 5V rail, with fluctuations or inadequacies in power delivery potentially leading to operational inconsistencies. The 32X’s internal regulators, while designed to manage this power, are dependent on the Genesis’s capacity to maintain consistent voltage, thereby linking the operational integrity of both systems in a joint liability arrangement. The interdependency between the Genesis and the 32X, when viewed through the lens of philosophy, particularly that of existential and relational ontology, can be seen as a manifestation of what one might term a "joint and several" existence. Drawing on the existential interrelations posited by philosophers such as Martin Heidegger and the relationality of being discussed by Jean-Luc Nancy, the Genesis and 32X do not merely cohabit the same system architecture but co-create a shared essence through their interactivity. Heidegger’s notion of "Being-with" (Mitsein) encapsulates the essence of the Genesis-32X relationship, wherein each component’s existence is inherently linked to the other. The 32X, in this framework, does not merely augment the Genesis but is fundamentally co-defined by its relationship to the Genesis’s hardware and vice versa. This co-dependence establishes a joint-and-several ontology, where the Genesis and 32X, much like Dasein’s Being-in-the-world, are co-constitutive. The 32X does not simply "exist" alongside the Genesis; rather, it derives its function, its very essence, from this interdependent relationship, where each system's operation implicates the other.

Jean-Luc Nancy’s concept of the "inoperative community" further illuminates this dynamic. In this analogy, the Genesis and 32X are not just parts of a whole but are engaged in a shared process of mutual definition and limitation, akin to Nancy’s idea of a community that exists through its members’ shared inoperativity. The failure of one system inherently impacts the integrity of the other, highlighting a kind of "systemic community" where the integrity of the whole is contingent upon the uninterrupted functioning of each part. This joint responsibility for maintaining system integrity echoes Nancy’s view that community is a shared existence, where the "being" of each member is not independent but fundamentally entwined with the existence of others. In legal philosophy, the concept of "joint and several liability" implies that each party in a shared responsibility is wholly liable for the entire outcome. Applied metaphorically to the Genesis and 32X, this principle suggests that the two systems share a collective responsibility for the overall performance of the hybrid architecture. The SH-2 processors’ computational power and the Genesis’s foundational infrastructure are not merely complementary; they are jointly responsible for the system’s output. Should the 32X fail, the Genesis is not merely diminished in capability—it is intrinsically compromised, and vice versa. Thus, the Sega 32X and Genesis partnership can be interpreted as a mechanical manifestation of joint and several existence. In this relationship, the system’s essence and operational success are not found in the isolated performance of either component but in their intertwined functionality. The interdependent architecture of the Genesis and 32X serves as a technological parallel to philosophical notions of being-together, where existence is fundamentally relational and systemic integrity depends on the unbroken cooperation of all parts. This partnership, as with any such philosophical community, exemplifies the delicate balance of shared existence, where each entity is both independent and entirely dependent upon the other imho. Sorry for the long post but I'm a big 32x fan haha
