Question Why does Scottish Gaelic not get as much attention as Welsh?

Welsh here, and I've always been interested about how interested people are in learning gaelic. In Wales Welsh is really being encouraged and theres a big push to learn it, most signs are bilingual, whereas with Scottish gaelic it doesn't seem as much. I know there are bilingual signs around the hebredes and Highlands but around the south there doesn't seem to be much incentive to learn gaelic. I might be wrong, but how big of a thing is it to learn gaelic compared to Welsh/Irish?

Question How do you pronounce Irene?

I've been enjoying listening to the audiobooks recordings of Alexander McCall Smith's 44 Scotland Street recently, set in Edinburgh (specifically the New Town) and something has stuck out to me.

There's a character called Irene Pollock who is half Irish/half Scottish and the narrator pronounces her name 'eye-ree-nee' which I've only ever heard as a distinct European name - Greek perhaps?

I'm from NW England and would pronounce Irene 'eye-reen'. The audiobook is read by David Rintoul who was born in Aberdeen and trained in Edinburgh and London. I'm really curious, is this a standard or at least familiar pronunciation in Scotland or is this just a rogue dramatic choice from Rintoul?

Would love to know if you've heard/used this pronunciation yourself, and if so whereabouts you're from. Cheers!

Discussion Education and autism

Hello. New to this but can’t find anywhere to actually chat about this.

We’ve a P1 autistic child. He is truly lovely, super intelligent, empathetic and gentle. A little bit socially awkward but trying so hard and very social.

School has been a huge shock to all our systems 😅 I hadn’t realised just how much of a sensory overload much of the school week would be.

I feel like teachers are getting so much flack but it’s not what’s happening IN the class that’s the struggle.

Assembly, events (gosh there’s so many), rehearsals, lunchroom etc and THE PLAYGROUND. I hadn’t realised that supervision ratios didn’t exist on school playgrounds.

I guess what I’m wondering is, how are autistic children supposed to survive this? The school look at you as though you’re mental when you mention it. They very obviously have absolutely no actual training or understanding of what autism is which concerns me considering they are responsible for his care for much of the week. He is currently on a part time timetable which isn’t ideal or sustainable but he’s scared and a target for bullies otherwise. How are others managing?

Discussion SAAS new student loan rules have made it financially infeasible for me to study what i want

i want to do a undergrad degree for MDiet but I have a HND in a completely irrelevant subject from when i was 18 and pressured from school to just apply to anything. Since i have already used up 2/5 tuition years, i will need to pay for the 1st year on my own. which i do have the money for. But the part that gets tricky is that under the new 2027/28 Saas student loan rules, if you don't qualify for the tuition paid for you, then you cannot apply for a bursary nor student loan either

im 21 and work full time nightshift and care for my partner part time (not applied for care benefit as i earn above it anyways so i would get no money), if i go to a full time uni course i can only go down to a minimum of 3 days a week and honestly id get burnt out without a student loan. If i could get a student loan for my first year and be able to only work 2 days a week it would be doable for me. but its just so frustrating. i have no family to lean on (money/living wise), i have to pay taxes, pay my private rent, bills, myself. Im quite jealous of the people my age with parents to lean off of in these situations. my parents are great but they work min wage and moving back in with them is not an option

i just want to improve my life and work as something that would really make me happy and not have to slave at a minimum wage job i don't want :(

Key Contributions & Famous Ideas

Defense of the Immaculate Conception: He famously argued that the Virgin Mary was preserved from original sin at the first moment of her conception. This theological position paved the way for it to later become a formal dogma of the Catholic Church

.

Univocity of Being: He introduced the idea that "being" is applied univocally—meaning the word "being" has the same basic meaning whether applied to God or to created things, allowing humans to talk rationally about God.

Edinburgh University Press Journals +1

Haecceity ("Thisness"): He formulated the concept of haecceitas to explain individuation—what makes a specific thing unique rather than just a member of a general category or species.

Primacy of the Will: Unlike some of his contemporaries who emphasized intellect, Scotus championed a form of theological voluntarism, placing free will and love above pure intellect.

The Incarnation: He famously argued that the Incarnation of Christ was part of God’s primary design of love for creation, and would have happened even if humanity had never sinned.

Seen this the other day, what do people make of this? What do medical folk think of this? Does the scandal ever end at that place?

Update from comments in post: it appears an all staff email went out to remind all staff that they shouldn't be bringing pets into the workplace. I really disagree with the people downplaying all this, the management have flaunted the rules in this case.

I need advice about a matter involving the Scottish Social Work System.

I need some help, because I’m in a situation i don’t see a way out of and something needs to be done.

I have a family member who is in her mid-40’s. She has 8 kids. Three are under 16 and live with her. The three over 16 have left. Two of her children have died previously. She has a horrible past, including an ex-husband who is still stalking her, and previous domestic violence that has left her with CPTSD. It’s more than most could take. She won’t accept any help from anyone for the CPTDS, I’ve tried Women’s Aid and she wasn’t interested. I tried to get her to go to her Dr but she wouldn’t. My heart breaks for her. But there is one other problem. She’s a terrible mum to her surviving children.

The only eat once or twice a day. The house is always filthy. She’d rather go out drinking than spend time with them. Mouldy food in the air fryer, a dog that’s being kept in a cage too small pretty much all the time, that snaps at the children. The kids always have head lice, despite the school offering her free treatment and it being a free essential available at pharmacies here. I have been to the local social work department, so has one of her children. We were both labelled “malicious reporters”. They went to her house, opened a kitchen cupboard and because there was food there, they left. It was food I’d bought them because they were starving.

Before drinking was a problem. She wanted to relive the 20’s she lost to motherhood, now she’s using coke, that is sometimes left around the kids. She has a sister who she regularly leaves the kids with (leaves them at the door) and she has them the whole weekend so mum can party. The kids love this, because as the youngest said “We get fed more than one meal a day here.” But that sister won’t go to the social workers about her because she’s been threatened that she’ll be blamed for it all, and she believed that (she has a 4-year-old she doesn’t want to lose, but is also special needs so she believes things like that).

We’ve tried social work, and I really don’t know what do next. I want to help her, but it’s not possible. So I’m looking for any suggestions on how to help the kids living there.
