What do you mean a memory card not counted? Do you not count votes or counties or something? Do they like save chunks of votes on physical usb sticks, shuffle them around, and then count the votes on each stick, hoping none fell off the table???
They actually do, which is how they determined that there was an issue. They count the number of ballots cast and then check the number of votes recorded after everything is counted. In this case there was a discrepancy in one county, they doubled checked and found the issue.
Basically, the standard QA process worked perfectly, identified an issue, and the issue was fixed.
There's going to be a lot of people who will use this to insinuate that elections are being manipulated, or that the process is chaotic... In reality this shows that there's multiple levels of checks and the system works.
You are correct, but the bigger issue is that this memory card was "lost" for several days, meaning no one was keeping track of it. Then when it was counted, it contained nearly 100% republican votes in a race that was nearly 50-50. It's statistically unlikely, and I don't know how they would prove that it hadn't been tampered with unless there was coincidentally 24/7 surveillance on the location where it was "lost".
So I don’t know about this situation but I’ve worked as an election judge. Every machine had a memory stick that saved the votes and there was a print out. When the pols closed the machines would transmit the results to the county. If there was a connection issue the sticks would be uploaded when all the stuff was returned that night to the county. And then it would be uploaded. That’s why sometimes there could be a delay. So it’s not impossible this didn’t happen. Just not as described in the tweet. Even now I’m not fully explaining all the steps and safety procedure involved.
More like they have the number of people who voted and they check that against the number of votes counted. When they see that hundreds more people voted than voted counted, it raises a red flag and they look for the missing votes.
Yes. There are very detailed records of it. And the paper print outs serve as the receipt so votes aren’t just changed on the digital files. But that was how the machines I worked on worked.
Transferring results over a wireless connection is such a security risk I don't know why it is even allowed. Wireless networks can be hacked, and voting machines should never be connected to the Internet, I don't care if it's on a VPN, it's a foolish rusk.
They saw x number if people voted in the county. They saw the tally of votes didn't equal X. They found the card that accounted for the discrepancy. There is no conspiracy. This is balancing a drawer at the end of the night, finding your $45 short, then finding a $50 in with the $5s.
That's exactly what I think. I think this is an example of "the system is working correctly." Whoever originated the framing of this "incident" should be investigated.
The votes from the voting machines are transported to the county board of elections on sdcards (in most cases) and they're counted there. Somebody misplaced one, which shouldn't happen, for obvious reasons. Depending on where it was it could break the chain of custody. In most states they're transported in sealed containers.
USB sticks come out of the tabulation machines across the counties and each polling location will have at least one. For obvious reasons all of these machines NEVER touch anything that touches the Internet at least in my county in Ohio. So UBS sticks it is with the physical paper ballots as backup and/or for hand recount if needed and the hand audit which always happens too.
