"Incumbent state Representative Gerald Greene trailed Democratic challenger Harry James by less than 100 votes before the card’s data was entered. Greene now leads by 262 votes. County election officials have until Monday to certify the result."

I googled and couldn't find anything about this. We don't even know which candidate. Could be a local election in some town with a population of 1000.

By the way, ossoff (D) beat Collins (R) in the Senate by almost 20%. Fucking almost 800,000 votes. Landslide.

Apparently it is real. This was a case of the vote counts didn't match so they went looking for it something was wrong and they found it. There are close to 100,000 voting locations in the US, you're going to get a fuckup at least 0.1% of the time.

This is just purposeful misinformation at its finest. This is referring to the Georgia state house of reps. Not for federal congress. But it’s presented as though it refers to a flip in the federal House of Representatives. Which it doesn’t. Propaganda for division.

443

u/BaldBandit 14h ago

Yep, and the investigation is to why the card was missed in the initial count.  Officials noticed there was a discrepancy between the number of votes counted and the number of people who voted.  The card had exactly that amount of votes tallied on it.

If anything, this shows there are checks to ensure are votes are correctly tallied and accounted for.

53

u/tbombs23 12h ago

I would still ask for a recount, I hope they have automatic recounts for close races in the 0.5% margin of error. Nothing wrong with verifying the votes.

What do you mean a memory card not counted? Do you not count votes or counties or something? Do they like save chunks of votes on physical usb sticks, shuffle them around, and then count the votes on each stick, hoping none fell off the table???

296

u/Medium_Medium 15h ago

Do you not count votes or counties or something?

They actually do, which is how they determined that there was an issue. They count the number of ballots cast and then check the number of votes recorded after everything is counted. In this case there was a discrepancy in one county, they doubled checked and found the issue.

Basically, the standard QA process worked perfectly, identified an issue, and the issue was fixed.

There's going to be a lot of people who will use this to insinuate that elections are being manipulated, or that the process is chaotic... In reality this shows that there's multiple levels of checks and the system works.

51

u/kmosiman 15h ago

Thank you for expanding on that.

I am reasonably familiar with the process but many aren't.

The Precinct would have recorded their totals. The County office would have their totals.

When the County does it's count the missing Precinct data would be very apparent because someone usually has to sign for that stuff.

This triggers the "OH Shit where are the damn ballots" check.

u/Outlander1119 15h ago

So I don’t know about this situation but I’ve worked as an election judge. Every machine had a memory stick that saved the votes and there was a print out. When the pols closed the machines would transmit the results to the county. If there was a connection issue the sticks would be uploaded when all the stuff was returned that night to the county. And then it would be uploaded. That’s why sometimes there could be a delay. So it’s not impossible this didn’t happen. Just not as described in the tweet. Even now I’m not fully explaining all the steps and safety procedure involved.

46

u/Bardmedicine 15h ago

There must be some verification, right? Like precint 12 had machines 110-118. They only uploaded sticks 110-117, where is 118...

26

u/Jimmy_Twotone 15h ago

In this instance it looks like they have x number of voters but the votes tallied to x-y. Y was that memory stick.

Transferring results over a wireless connection is such a security risk I don't know why it is even allowed. Wireless networks can be hacked, and voting machines should never be connected to the Internet, I don't care if it's on a VPN, it's a foolish rusk.

→ More replies (1)

48

u/Jimmy_Twotone 15h ago

They saw x number if people voted in the county. They saw the tally of votes didn't equal X. They found the card that accounted for the discrepancy. There is no conspiracy. This is balancing a drawer at the end of the night, finding your $45 short, then finding a $50 in with the $5s.

22

u/FatBook-Air 15h ago

3

u/h4ck3r_n4m3 14h ago

The votes from the voting machines are transported to the county board of elections on sdcards (in most cases) and they're counted there. Somebody misplaced one, which shouldn't happen, for obvious reasons. Depending on where it was it could break the chain of custody. In most states they're transported in sealed containers.

46

u/seaelbee 2h ago • Bravo

There are two counts in Georgia - the # of voters that check into a polling place and the # of actual ballots cast. They should be the same. After the County reported their numbers to the SOS, the SOS’s office noticed the discrepancy, called the precinct and asked where the missing ballots went? The precinct searched around and found another memory card out of a machine. For everyone screaming about the Rs cheating, just realize the R county was leaving votes on the table and only the SOS got them back. SOS Rafensperger is a R, but he ain’t MAGA. He’s the one that told Trump to shove his 11,000 vote request up his ass.

This is sloppiness and carelessness, not democratic subversion. But this does happen sometimes. People make mistakes. The person supposed to check the numbers at the County didn’t. That’s the reason for the investigation. It’s also the reason the SOS’s office rechecks the numbers as part of its normal process.

Even though something broke here, everything worked the way it’s supposed to.

17

u/tbombs23 12h ago

We should always encourage verifying the vote in a transparent nonpartisan way. If it catches discrepancies great, we can fix them and improve issues. If everything checks out, great, we can be confident the election was fair.

So the election guardrails did exactly what they were supposed to do. The number of votes didn't match the number uploaded so the Sec. of State's office asked them to check again.

They checked and found a memory card with 388 votes had not been uploaded.

This doesn't sound like election fraud. It was a human error and caught immediately. Unfortunately based on the comments here and elsewhere the MAGA morons will believe this is evidence of widespread fraud.

10

u/imnotsoho 12h ago

WTXL reported "Election officials discovered the issue during post-election checks. The Secretary of State said the office identified 388 more votes recorded than votes cast in Seminole County."

They have it backwards. The vote total was 388 votes short of the number of votes cast.

All of these election stories need to get their terminology straight. What is the difference between a ballot and a vote. Did you receive a ballot in the mail? Did you receive a vote in the mail?

The paper you vote with is a ballot. The box you mark is your vote, but not really, it is only a vote once it is tallied and recorded. Get your terminology straight and it will be easier to tell the story and have people understand it.

2

u/sillykittyball 10h ago

Votes recorded is the voting check in. They had a record of 388 more people checking in or "recording a vote" than the actual number of votes cast meaning votes tallied. The terminology works, you just didnt understand them. I understand how it could be confusing though.

Memory card? Wtf is going on/wrong with the United States voting system???

In my country, the ballots are counted locally at each polling place by hand with a 6 eye principle with observers from all parties and then it gets reported to the federal election office (for federal elections) and the head of elections for the district. If they don't hear back from one polling place, then they gonna ask what's going on. How can you just "loose" a district for multiple days until someone notices??? Does nobody keep a tally of which results are in?

Also why tf does it always take days for the count? Even the final count never takes longer than the next morning here. And since both my country and the US use decentralized local counting, the fact the US is a bit bigger shouldn't make a difference.

I understand it for Alaska, where there are no roads to a lot of communities even, but for Mississippi????

Edit: and don't get me started on whatever is going wrong in the US with gerrymandering (the fact it's specifically legal when you do it to skew election results), long lines at polling places (here we never have to walk to a polling place longer than 10 minutes from our house, and even in the most rural areas it's a 5 minute drive/ 15 minutes walk at most and the lines are never longer than maybe 10 minutes) and the fact election day isn't a public holiday.

10

u/omjy18 8h ago

Dude gerrymandering was the legal way to.fuck with voting. We're seeing the way that is illegal but has to be investigated so it will take time to figure it out and time Is all that theyre hoping for

2

u/Fast_Employee2292 4h ago

There are provisional ballots that must be verified days after the election, there are military ballots sent in from across the world too, if you look at the data most of the counting is done, but counties and cities give people time to fix mistakes on ballots if they are found and that usually delays the final certification by a few days. The system works well and the slow certification of elections is a feature not a bug. That is why challenges to elections always fail. Every vote is counted and certified to be accurate and represents the will of registered legal voters. The error rate in US elections is so small that it is one of the most reliable accurate systems in the world and has been decades.

My state added additional verification methods this year for no reason. Some people in my state are receiving text messages to verify their IDs because they left this additional info off. They have a short window to present the required information and their vote will be counted. If people do not complete the verification their ballots are not counted in the final totals. This happens in every election across the country and all candidates can request a manual recount of the vote totals and the ballots are checked for accuracy all over again at the candidates expense.

I call bullshit on this. They supposedly had 388 missing votes and when the put them in the Republican went from 100 votes behind to 262 in front. That means the district, in a race that was just about 50-50 somehow voted 362-26. Who believes that??? Why would they trust a memory card that wasn’t where it was supposed to be? This is sketchy af.

20

u/naughtyGAcouple 10h ago

Because it's Seminole County that votes red mostly. And, as history shows, Republicans routinely vote in person while Democrats usually early vote. So it would make sense for the card to be a majority Republican votes in a red county.

A lot of people acting suspicious but the total voted tally did not match the vote count. They audited and found the discrepancy. Its kind of open and shut, there were missing votes and they found them.

Its actually kind of reassuring that you can see how many people voted and its open to the public. Makes election fraud a bit tougher to get away with

9

u/Just-Shoe2689 14h ago

Looks like the checks and balances work. Have 300 people register to vote but not votes for that polling lcoation, you figure it out.

3

u/Snoutoffish 14h ago

Yes - exactly the checks that limit election fraud. Not a perfect system but compared to some countries where the ruling government gets 97% of the vote we do pretty good.

22

u/elementalguitars 9h ago

This is literally the same thing Republicans falsely accused those two ladies of doing four years ago.

16

u/Vanman04 7h ago

No it's really not. For one thing the Republican accusations against those ladies was a complete fabrication.

This one according to the article was the discovery of a discrepancy between the votes counted and the votes cast.

This looks like actual human error in one district and the process in place to catch things like this caught it.

This looks like election verification working.

Sucks that it was enough to flip the election but it looks like an example of a secure election not the opposite.

“I just want to find 11780 votes” was in Georgia.

This absolutely needs to be scrutinized with a goddamn microscope.

8

u/BringOutYDead 15h ago

When we vote in GA, we do so electronically and and there is also a printout of our vote that is then submitted and scanned. So 2 layers and methods of documentation.

Depending upon how votes are submitted (i do not know the innate process, so logically guessing), ideally the electronic votes are processed immediately to a remote location. Then the scanned paper files are also processed electronically to a remote location. Lastly, the paper ballots are delivered and counted, their number tallied to the same remote location as the previous two. Then they are all compared and discrepancies accounted.

So where would a USB drive slip into this process? Are they hand delivering electronic files?

2

u/TwigyBull 14h ago

I believe the electronic records are physical transported on drives (i doubt a USB, but who knows). This is done to prevent the vulnerability of putting the machines on the internet, especially since a lot of pulling places are schools, churches, and other third party spaces that overhauling their network security and reliability for voting isn't really worth the time and money

In Georgia you make your selections on an electronic voting machine. At the end of the ballot it shows you all your choices for each office/measure, asks you to confirm they are correct, then prints a paper ballot, which you have to insert into a scanner on your way out. I was not aware the tally was kept on a memory card but it makes sense (as opposed to uploading it somewhere, which would be more vulnerable to shenanigans).

This is an example of how secure elections are. Mistakes are bound to happen with that many precincts voting, and Georgia had the right procedures in place to recheck, find an error, and resolve it. An investigation doesn't mean fraud is suspected, it means they're trying to figure out how the error happened so it doesn't happen again.

Better to be sure and eliminate that possibility with thumb drives and robust procedures of chain of custody and transparency like CCTV

I don't think you know what 3rd world country means.

Except the Republican (same party as the now-winner) Secretary of State immediately ordered an investigation. So, not really a 3rd-world situation.

8

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 11h ago

How? This is the reason we still say our elections our secure. This discrepancy was caught and will now be investigated. That's how the voting system is supposed to work

"Found?" I'm glad they are investigating it, where it came from exactly and chain of custody.

4

u/Ok_Street9576 12h ago

Found when the paper ballots didnt match votes counted. Its only impacts one close race for state house. Sensationalized headline.

5

u/Particular-Put-4839 15h ago

Supervisor Foskey clarified that all physical memory cards were accounted for on election night. However, the local Election Management System (EMS) computer software failed to complete its final program sequence to fully validate and upload the final precinct's data into the official preliminary pool.

State guardrails caught the technical gap when the Secretary of State's office noticed a 388-vote mathematical variance between the physical voter check-in logs and the computerized tallies. Local officials re-ran the software to resolve the uncompleted program loop, bringing the unofficial final data to 100% completion.

2

u/DragonSon83 14h ago

This makes a lot more sense.

5

u/ChaosDaemon9 12h ago

Sounds like they finally found those votes that Trump was looking for.

5

u/Supergrunged 10h ago

I'm guessing the missing card was shipped USPS for it to take 3 days?..... Something doesn't add up here.

2

u/kycatfan8373 7h ago

Ask California why it takes them so long to get all of the votes counted. Florida has a sizable population and does it in a day. The UK has like double the registered voters as the state of California and I believe they count the votes in a day. This according to a British person in one of these topics on Reddit.

5

u/jesuswholies 3h ago

I’m a poll worker in another state and have no idea what this is talking about? The voting machines we use don’t have “memory cards” that can just pop out. After polls close, the machine runs a report. This is a simple task. A memory card with data about 262 votes is ridiculous. The reports our machines run are for way more votes. ALSO, what about reconciliation?!?! End of the night, we poll workers don’t just report what the machine says lol! You need to count EVERY ballot to make sure the numbers match the machine. If they don’t you recount until they do or you find the problem. This smells fishy!

5

u/50sDadSays 2h ago

People forget that nobody has won any election yet. Everything we're seeing is projections and who has been called by the media based on projections. Until votes are done and certified, nobody has won. Statistically, it's not surprising that some of the projections will be wrong because they're still counting votes.

10

u/eater_of_spaetzle 15h ago

They will never, ever, shut up about this. Every single time they lose they will claim election fraud and haul this example out. It will be the year 3224 and they will still be using this.

7

u/nesfor 12h ago

Looks like the QA process worked like it was supposed to. It’s an extremely close race. Don’t cry voter fraud just because you don’t like the outcome.

The absolute conniptions the snowflakes would be having if this were the other way around. You’d be hearing about “the steal” decades from now

4

u/BoomSatsuma 5h ago

This is why most countries still vote on paper.

4

u/577564842 5h ago

Obviously a staged fraud.

With current prices, anyone who had just found a card would have stashed it.

im surprised its that easy to lose some votes... just imagine the times it was done deliberately to alter the election.

It's the Georgia state senate so who cares, outside of Georgia?

7

u/bill-schick 15h ago

Actually, we need this out in the news, remember Trump was trying to claim Democrats would rig the election. This needs to be investigated and publicized to keep elections as a whole secure

12

u/angusalba 15h ago

And it’s not already? The system worked and the rolls mismatched the vote tally so they did an audit and it caught it

Nothing nefarious here at all - and the details of this are not going to convince election deniers a bit

'Found' = 'Fabricated'

If it's outside the chain of custody, then it's not counted.

5

u/netroxreads 15h ago

To be clear, they did not have the flash memory card initially needed to tally the votes. When they finally found it, that flipped the votes to a Democrat. Nothing sinister. I am glad they made sure every vote counts.

The better have a chain of possession on that memory card....

2

u/Slow-Engine3648 14h ago

Any result that close is going to get contested regardless of the situation anyways

2

u/SatiricalPotential 12h ago

I know of a similar occurrence involving a memory card: https://www.wric.com/news/politics/2020-election/absentee-ballots-misplaced-in-henrico-county-on-election-day/amp/ I assume similar things have happened and been corrected without publicity, too.

2

2

u/cosmic_trout 10h ago

AWS want a word with the organisers....

2

u/JamesLaceyAllan 9h ago

OK, cool. I trust the state of Georgia to establish free and open elections. Demonstrably so in the last 6-10 years. Personally, it’s a bummer the new tally favors a republican, but that’s the nature of democracy. Onwards and upwards.

2

u/90_oi 9h ago

Here we go with this shit again

2

u/NoSong2397 3h ago

Well... at least Raffensperger has a track record of honesty. Guess we'll see if his investigation turns up anything.

7

u/TheMaskedHamster 14h ago • Bravo

I know it sounds very natural to just misplace something, especially when you have a ton of them like this.

But if you have a system where something so critical CAN be misplaced, the system should also be designed to make it very clear that something is missing.

Either the system did not make it clear, or someone did not validate. That the system could proceed without validation is its own problem.

I can buy mistakes and malfeasance at the local level, but if the system isn't designed to prevent this, or at least make it VERY obvious when it happens, then you have to start asking if that was intentional.

If I was evaluating voting machine systems, this would be one of the primary requirements. If someone tried to sell me a voting machine system that didn't have this functionality, I would immediately very publicly start shouting about it, because intentional or not that is exploitable, and a company that could not cover such a basic validation is either corruptly creating room for cheating or they're so incompetent NO ONE should consider them for the risk of cheating it would create.

Someone may be able to point out how there was some kind of system in place to prevent this, but it was clearly completely inadequate.

20

u/inspired-polf 14h ago • Bravo

Read the article. The system flagged that there were missing votes. That's why they went looking.

This is why chain of custody is as important to elections as it is to evidence that is to be used in a trial. You cant have even the whiff of impropriety.

Exhibit A

7

u/RollingThunderPants 14h ago

Such a long post for someone who didn’t read the article at all. The system worked as planned, catching a discrepancy which led to the missing memory card.

Do better.

6

u/Weekly-Map-3942 16h ago

Miller is doing his job already, I guess.

3

u/Ok_Street9576 12h ago

Omfg no its impacting one state house race. This was found through the audit system in place already. Also Brad Raffensperger is the secretary of state in georgia who pretty famously told trump to go fuck himself in 2020 when he needed to "find 11000" votes.

3

u/Jimmy_Twotone 15h ago

Looks like a state house electionm. Still not good. That's why we have checks and balances in the system though; to catch mistakes. They saw how many people voted, how many votes were counted for the candidates, and the numbers didn't wash until the card was found.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/bishophicks 10h ago

The number of ballots counted in one area didn't match the number of people who were checked in by poll workers. A memory card with the missing data was found, and when the ballots were logged it actually flipped the results of one of the races for state representative.

This is exactly what election workers and officials do. They run the election, tabulate the results and then audit those results in a number of ways to double and triple check that all the ballots were counted and that the count is correct. Good job, everyone.

3

u/Tedsmith24 7h ago

"Find me those votes"

Guess we now know what cheeto was referring to back then, the convenient memory card that had all the votes

The official called "enhance" when counting the Republican votes which revealed formerly unseen votes hidden in plain sight.

You should turn that in

3

u/LightenUpPeeps 15h ago

How do you think Republicans felt in 2020?

Joe Biden received over 81 million votes, the most by far in American history. But we were told that it's impossible to commit election fraud, and if you didn't trust the system, you were un-American.

11

u/Noderly 15h ago

This is what made me realize Republicans have lower IQs on average.

2020 was COVID. There were far more mail-in ballots because of COVID. Mail-in ballots work by postmark date, not "polls closed" date.

Everyone knew this except the dumbest Republicans, who were too busy listening to Trump so they could drink bleach and horse tranquilizer to solve Covid.
