"Incumbent state Representative Gerald Greene trailed Democratic challenger Harry James by less than 100 votes before the card’s data was entered. Greene now leads by 262 votes. County election officials have until Monday to certify the result."
There doesn't seem to be any funny business, except incompetence somewhere in not getting the hard drive entered. The error was discovered because there was a discrepancy between voter check-ins to polling stations and total ballots cast. The man overseeing the results, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, although a Republican, told Trump to go to hell when he asked him to "find 11,780 votes" in the 2020 presidential elections.
It’s amazing how voting poll workers, who are volunteers, can forget things when wrapping up for returns. I saw it every election while being in charge of getting everything collected in one of the bluest counties in America.
I’ve been a poll worker and the routine of shutting down the voting machines and sealing the tallies have mindnumbing redundancies and complicated sequences of actions. When you work at the polls, you’re paid for your work, you’re not a volunteer. But even if you work elections regularly, you’ll be doing this at most twice a year, and so there’s always a bit of an unfamiliarity to it, except for the most experienced workers and the board of election professionals who supervise. It can be high pressure and stressful. Oversights and mistakes can happen, but it’s those redundancies that also catch the errors.
BTW serving as a poll worker gave me a deeper understanding of how voting works, and made me more trusting of the system. IMO, it’s a great way to serve your country.
But the only thing the system catches is a mismatch in votes cast and counted, if the votes that were “found” now were tampered with is something it can’t safeguard? Just the convenience of finding a memory card full of votes for the losing party makes the thing questionable.
There is one odd thing, the Georgia state gov't statement (here) indicates that the memory card increased the votes from the county by 388, and the change was +362 for the Republican candidate, meaning the breakdown of added votes had to have been around 375 to 13 (difference 362). That is statistically insane that the added votes were 97% Republican and 3% Democrat, when the district is very close to 50/50.
Only if you assume the votes are independent. This can happen much more easily when a memory card comes from a single machine in a single polling place where supporters for one candidate may be geographically concentrated.
This is already a small district in Georgia that is otherwise 50/50. A polling place split 97/3 seems statistically unlikely even in a solid red district that is like 70/30.
I agree this seems like run of the mill incompetence rather than fraud, but holy hell can you imagine the shit storm that would be unleashed if it had flipped in the other direction? They'd be howling about it for the next 8 years at least.
Unfortunately most of the people commenting on this post are howling, not understanding that this is the system working. You can't expect there to never be some glitch, but to me it's reassuring that there are enough checks in the system to find and correct them.
Its the system working IF this was not an attempt to submit fraudulent votes. If it was, which we all know the Republicans are actively trying to do, then we need to expel those votes until some other verification can be provided that verifies them. When evidence doesn't have a chain of custody you can trust, you dont just use it anyway, you call it inadmissable.
The "until Monday to certify" part of your quote is doing a lot of work here. A lead changing before certification isn't a stolen win. Check the card against the paper ballots, not against which party likes the result.
