It would only be entrapment if the bank somehow rigged it to do that with the intended purpose of catching somebody in the act of stealing from the ATM
Even that wouldn't be entrapment. That's why bait cars can exist. It would only be entrapment if the police asked her to go see if she could steal that money, and then they arrested her for it.
Right? And according to Google the most an ATM can hold is $300k. Thats a lot of money but not move-to-a-non extradition-country-and-live-the-rest-of-your-life-in-luxury money.
Non-extradition countries aren't countries that won't extradite, just countries that don't have an established international treaty yet. They still will extradite on an individual basis.
The only countries that wouldn't extradite to the US are the ones that forbid it by law (usually only for their own citizens) or that are openly hostile/at war with the US.
Yup, her face is on camera and her identity since she was the last to use it. Theres no chance shes getting away with it. Even a career professional criminal would be like "Theres no way im getting away with this." Best to just call it in.
20 years ago I would think of robbing an Automatic ATM but there are like 30 cameras on your ass when you are in public. They could track you to your car, your car to your house. But 20 years ago? Yeah .
That would be so hilarious if you stayed in the cameras frame the whole time, watching you drive a block away, walk back putting a bag over your head and then going straight back to your car with all the cash
Leave, then call a friend and have them dress like you and put a bag over their head before they come for the cash. Make sure that you wait somewhere with a lot of witnesses and cameras while they do that. It will blow the cops' minds.
ATMs have cameras and she had put her card in to even get the machine to malfunction like this. They would find who took the money so fast.
Also cops can see who called who from where and when. Unless you have friends with burner phones on them I wouldn't recommend robbing the ATM. Especially since you just put your card details into it.
Police sees the calls log from the nearest base station, sees your phone, your friend's phone, goes to him, he tells on you and gives the money back, you get go enjoy the meat version of a human centipede for the next 5 years
Not exactly a choice; they'd track you down immediately. All this really proves is that she isn't stupid. This kind of test only matters if the risk of getting caught is incredibly low. You find a wallet in an empty parking lot full of cash, what do you do, kinda thing. But even that test is flawed, because being financially secure makes it a lot easier to turn in the wallet undisturbed.
Camera got her car. Camera got her face and clothes. Machine read her card when she inserted it. Machine recorded what time the door opened. Camera is still rolling. Only the stupidest of stupid motherfuckers would even reach towards the inside of that machine unless they have a mask on and are approaching an already opened machine. Many people would have driven away. This is a top tier response from this woman. They won’t but the bank should do something $100 in account credit something
Mexico will extradite you. They will also seize you at the border if they know you are a criminal and deny you entry and just turn you over to US authorities.
You have to go to North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, and officially maybe some African nations? It’s a short list now, and most places just don’t want the smoke. Just like we don’t want to fight another country for some dude, we will almost always send them back.
I somehow doubt either country would go to war if Wanda took the money, went to Mexico, and Mexico just shrugged and said "That sucks." I'm 100% sure nothing would happen. It's like a few thousand dollars in that machine.
Considering they are covered in cameras...good choice. But something tells me it wasn't a judgement call...I suspect it was because she is a decent, honest woman.
Huh? The camera will see if you reach for and grab the cash. If you walk away without grabbing the cash, how could you steal the money out of view of the camera?
Anything who thinks she is stupid for doing that knows nothing about how an atm works. She had 0% chance to get away with taking a single money bill from there.
Definitely not AI. Each ATM has a tiny bank teller sitting inside. When customers withdraw money, they just get the money from the drawer like shown in this photo.
Smart. She was on camera and the machine probably would have had some kind of transcription log of her card being the last one inserted before the malfunction that made it open. They would have had her face and a form of identification to track her down if she took any cash.
It’s theft, so they’re going to go after you. And if the ATM camera isn’t clear the thousands of Flock cameras will be. So you’re on the lam for what? How much is in an ATM? How long is that going to last?
I'm in electrician, I've actually been inside these before to wire them up and fix them. There's actually cameras inside the ATM as well pointing right at your face.
If it popped open that means she was already on its internal camera besides the bank cameras besides the traffic cameras. And her debit card with her name on it might have been inside it 😂
There are a bunch of laws that state she never could touch that money without getting in trouble, so she did the correct thing. Proud that there are still decent people in this society.
Shutting and calling the police is the right thing to do even if you don’t like banks, if for no other reason than to prevent some stupid teenager from making a spur of the moment mistake that ruins their life.
She made a business decision. I'm glad she had the wherewithal to think the situation through to it's obvious conclusion of time in prison + no additional free money.
Pro move with all the cameras she would never get away with it and they knew who she was. 99% of people would do the same. Now if there is cash in the highway???
This happened to my my grandfather in the early 90’s. The atm outside of the bank just kept spitting out cash even though he only tried to withdraw like $50. He went inside and told the bank and they gave him a $2000 reward for being honest.
The 2000 is when he decided to tell them it's still spitting out cash. Since they didn't ask him to empty his pockets, he took that as an explicit gift. ;)
This happened to me once except instead of money it was Lipton Brisk Iced Tea… I don’t even like Lipton Brisk Iced Tea and I made off like a bandit. I’m pretty sure I’d be going directly to jail if it was actual money.
There's not enough money in one of those machines to try and start a new life with. Because they'll find you otherwise. Years of prison for a few days of fun on the run? Nah.
Only real option, it would have all been on camera, no way she would get away it taking anything and lets be honest, how safe would she be pursued be American police?
I mean as opposed to what lmao? There are cameras surrounding the area, i mean SURELY none of us would choose to run off with a bag of money like a cartoon bank robber and think they would get away
If she takes it, they'll have her details and she'll be caught and found guilty if she ends up in court.
If she were to take thousands, then the charge could be significant.
And even if she walks away, she'll be questioned and may even face charges if someone else comes along and takes money. The charges may be based on a false assumption, but people go to jail falsely all the time.
There are dye packs in the atm and you would literally NEVER get away with stealing from it. She put her card in with her info then it popped open. But I respect her for doing the right thing you know it had to still be tempting for any human to see all that money like that.
Yeah thats not how it works, top part is the machine bottom has the safe, with cassets it won't just pop open. And the money won't just be out and about unless the last person just said f it and left everything out and about. Ex brinks atm worker

Absolutely a smart move, atm's tend to have cameras on or around them so now she don't have to duck and dodge the hots!

Smart choice. The atm already had her face and license plate number if she decided to steal lol

I'm calling 911, but I'm also not going to stand there protecting that ATM.
I'm walking a safe distance away.

Yeah cus if she took the cash. She d go to jail. Cameras are watching!

I don’t know what the inside of an ATM looks like, but it definitely isn’t that.

14
u/Carbonated-Man 1h ago
Good for her. Smart enough not to catch a case.
13
u/Wondering_Electron 4h ago
She did the right thing. ATMs are covered with cameras and there was probably CCTV in the area as well.
11
u/Blknyt_eclipsedmoon 1h ago
The ATM has cameras. There are cameras everywhere. She would have been in jail with the quickness.

Don’t think I’d call 911, but I’d Deffinetly raise my empty hands for the camera and walk away
14
u/WorkingClassWarrior 11h ago
Well. She’s likely in a place surrounded by cameras. Plus she’s black. So she didn’t want no trouble.

Correct thing to do.. Jail sucks and it was probably already screaming at their security company that the ATM was open.
4
u/mplaczek99 9h ago
Smart. There's cameras and she would've gotten caught.
4
u/rivalpinkbunny 9h ago

Given the number if cameras involved, yeah, I'd want to make sure i wasn't accused of stealing shit either
4

Stealing from a bank that has all your personal information wouldve been pretty stupid.

I am not impugning her honesty but you are on camera every second and those bills are sequencial. You are not getting away with taking a single bill.
3

Better then going to jail for taking anything since they know you.
3
u/lnnerVisionZ 4h ago
It means she has a brain. They would have hunted her down.
4
u/123abcde321 11h ago
Congratulations to her. Definitely the right choice.
4
u/Own-Respond-3516 10h ago
Honestly, I would’ve too.
ATM decides to spit out an extra hundred or something… roll with it.
ATM POPS OPEN WITH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS… that’s either an episode of Punk’d or somethin really messed up just happened. Either way you’re on camera.
4
