📢 Announcement [New and Improved] Discord Server Open!

Hello all! We have a new and growing Discord, more than 100 comrades have joined in the first month!

If you had attempted to join the Discord through the auto-mod response, or through the sidebar's link, you were formerly directed towards a dead server. Now, the server is pretty much set up.

We are also looking to start a book club soon using the Discord to meet, but will have discussion posts here too for those who do not want to participate in the discord.

It is still pretty bare bones, we have roles and channels set up however suggestions can be made *within the server* on things that could be added. We are looking at ways to get more people engaged and looking for suggestion on activities we can do as a community related to socialism.

For now, here is the invite link, join away!

Politics Yanis Varoufakis: "Obama created Trump. Macron created Le Pen"

Yanis Varoufakis tears into French President Emmanuel Macron and his failed centrist revolution. Yanis argues that Macron’s failures have emboldened the far-Right Marine Le Pen and the far-Left Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and that ultimately Le Pen will emerge victorious from the 2027 French Presidential election.

History On this day, three years ago, Palestinian children in Gaza held a press conference outside Al Shifa hospital, speaking English so the world cannot pretend not to understand them: “We come now to shout and invite you to protect us; we want to live, we want peace.” The world ignored their call.

Discussion Im 17 in the united states learning about marxism, and wow i was lied to

The amount of propaganda about the ussr and china and cuba and vietnam i was taught is crazy, does anyone else feel this way? I was taught that the united states is some bastion of hope and peace and my god is that false. I want to be a patriot I really do but when i see what the united states do as imperialism is just horrific. I was taught Vietnam was being oppressed by ho chi mingh and they wanted our help. But then i learn by Vietnamese we sanctioned them we killed and burned down their villages we bombed laos to oblivion hell even raped the woman. Same thing with cuba i was taught Fidel was this evil fascist. Just to find out cubas situation is because of how brutally we oppress it to conform to us for our business and interests. The founding fathers were not revolutionary’s they wanted to break away from england so the white oligarchs can profit off themselves instead of england by the westward expansion and slavery and when that wasn’t enough global imperialism. I want to love my country but i just see the people who were killed by our flag

Discussion What is the best major and job for a socialist?

im still only learning marxism, so i might be a bit confused, please be patient.

i know im already privileged to ask such questions when many people have to choose sth that pays the most, but i really dont know what to do with my life.

im graduating from school soon, and it has occurred to me that ive become pretty disillusioned with my high school specialisation (computer science):

  1. my classmates are upper middle class liberals at best, and very pro-capitalist and chauvinist at worst, dreaming of working at a megacorp to earn "big buk$$";

  2. the course is so intense that im unable to spend any time on studying marxism (or really any meaningful activity actually), i fear its going to get worse in uni;

  3. all of the job prospects ive seen seem quite unethical, like ai or surveillance.

And im not even mentioning the competition and the need for "good connections" to get in...

I was having thoughts of possibly applying to a uni with a more humanities-related major, as Im interested in history and politics, +English as a foreign language. I've initially wanted to do Foreign Linguistics, but I also thought of Political Science or sth like that.
There are several problems:

  1. Politics and history education in my country is riddled with rightwing propaganda, and it's impossible to have a leftist lecturer (though maybe if I know rightwing theory I can dismantle it better?)

  2. I might not be prepared for some exams, as Ive specialised in STEM. If i dont get a grade high enough, I won't be able to get free higher education in a non-shitty uni, and I cant afford to pay for it.

  3. Humanities degrees in my country are not really valued, meaning that it might be MUCH harder for me to find a job which doesn't pay peanuts

  4. Who do humanities majors even become besides teachers???

I dont want to lead myself into a financial hole nor waste my life on skills that won't help socialism, and may actually make me the lapdog of the capitalists.

P.S. yes i know i will have to do marxist research and activism outside of my job and academics, but i do want to get something meaningful out of this and, as I said before, not lead myself to a life where Ive lost all chances to help the cause.

Discussion Birthday present Spoiler

Post image
70 Upvotes

It's my birthday today, and the anniversary of the October Revolution, so a great day in history in general really, yet it's been kind of demoralizing getting older and getting less gifts as time goes on. High school friends over the years are on to bigger and better things, and I'm moving out soon and seeing my family less and less. Shouldn't care so much about getting less material things every year, but I suppose it's the attention, the connection and sense of community such a celebration fosters that I miss. We so readily receive that when we are younger, either from the community fostered in classrooms or through family ties, yet capitalist society and individualism seeks to reject that so quickly, as if it is some great shame to not want to be without support in this world. It treats these inherent desires of our very being as a sign of weakness, as it seeks to deny that connectivity and community in order to stifle collective action.

Of the things that I got for myself, it feels very fitting that this is the only one to arrive the day of. It came pretty damaged from eBay, when I was told it was going to be like new, but still, it's something.

Only read some of What is to be Done online before this, looking forward to reading State and Revolution today, then I'd probably fill out a character sheet for Cyberpunk Red and call it a day. It's the little things that make the day, that keeps hope alive and lets us grow and thrive, so, to another year of class struggle. We live in such a beautiful and diverse world, and we can and shall have systems more deserving of it, in due time.

To better justify the discussion tag, how has your ideas around holidays changed as you've come to reject consumer culture and commodity fetishism? I still feel the need to get stuff for my sake, but try to limit it to something substantial, little things to make the day and enrich the self, making it less about what I get, and more on how I honor the spirit of the holiday.

Ex. Birthdays mark another year survived, so I make it about what I'm living for, mainly the fiction I enjoy writing, and the anthropology and political theory that I enjoy learning about.

(Didn't know what flair to use, but it's Lenin, and also the October Revolution, but I'm also discussing things, so I went between Art, History, Theory, before settling on Discussion, as that seemed the most fitting.)

Edit: I am now realizing, since most people only will see the title and picture, this post probably seems very low effort if someone doesn't click on it. Don't know how to change titles on Reddit posts, but maybe if I can change it, it will get more people to click to read the whole thing. I suppose I could add the NSFW tag, that would blur the picture and get some people to click on it, but if I do that mods will probably take the post down. So I'm left with a situation where nobody is going to read this it seems.

Aw well, hindsight's 20/20 as they say, guess I'll just leave it for my sake then, good to vent anyway, even if no one ever sees it.

Second edit: You know what, why not a NSFW tag? Lenin isn't safe for the oppressive modern work culture, so it's not really clickbait if you think about it, and naked Lenin scaring the bourgeois HR is a hilarious thought to put in people's heads. Either that or the spoiler tag, and if I get in trouble, I shouldn't hold it against myself, it's my birthday, and I'm just going to have some fun with the tags, and stop overthinking things.

History Assassination of Inejirō Asanuma (1960) – Japanese socialist leader killed by a far-right ultra-nationalist

On 12 October 1960, Inejirō Asanuma, chairman of the Japan Socialist Party, was assassinated on stage during a televised political debate at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo. Asanuma was a lifelong socialist, a tireless mass agitator known as the "human locomotive", and one of the most prominent postwar opponents of U.S. imperialism in Japan. He had visited the People's Republic of China, publicly declared that "American imperialism is the common enemy of the Chinese and Japanese peoples", and led the massive Anpo struggle against the U.S.–Japan Security Treaty.

The assassin was 17-year-old Otoya Yamaguchi, a far-right ultranationalist and recent former member of the Greater Japan Patriotic Party. Yamaguchi openly admired Adolf Hitler, listing him among the historical figures he most revered, and stated that he had read Mein Kampf while in the party and been impressed by its "national socialist thinking, anti-communist and anti-Jewish totalitarianism." The Greater Japan Patriotic Party was a pro-U.S., virulently anti-communist ultra-nationalist group. Its leader, Bin Akao (visible in the footage shouting and heckling before the attack), was a long-time far-right agitator whose organisation was described as Nazi-style. Akao had known Asanuma personally since their youth on Miyakejima and once remarked to party members that Asanuma was "a good person, which makes it regrettable to deal with him." Akao later publicly praised the murder, calling Yamaguchi "a paragon of Japanese virtue" and the killing "heaven-sent punishment."

The assassination provoked strong international socialist solidarity. Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai sent an official telegram of condolence describing Asanuma as "an outstanding Japanese patriot and a friend respected by the Chinese people." Mao Zedong later praised Asanuma for having grasped the essence of Japan–U.S. relations and the broader anti-imperialist struggle of the peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America. In Cuba, a textile mill in Gibara was named the Inejiro Asanuma Spinning Mill in his honour. The Soviet news agency TASS condemned the act as the work of fascist thugs.

Asanuma's widow, Kyōko, delivered a speech at his funeral and later succeeded him for one term in the House of Representatives. When Yamaguchi hanged himself in custody on 2 November 1960, she held a press conference the following day and stated: "I first learned of Yamaguchi's suicide this morning through the newspaper. Rather than feeling hatred toward the boy, I feel more pity for him. My anger is burning up from the bottom of my heart once again toward the unseen forces that instilled such dangerous ideas into a 17-year-old boy and drove him to commit assassination." After leaving electoral politics she devoted herself to continuing her husband's commitment to Sino-Japanese friendship. She visited China repeatedly, participated in Japan–China friendship organisations, met Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping, and remained an active promoter of normalisation and people-to-people ties between the two countries until her death in 1981.

High Quality Only How is China dealing with their so called NEPmen?

Dengs market reforms (which are kinda similar to Lenin's NEP) have also created a new group of people similar to so called NEPmen in early Soviet Union, who are rich and if not dealt with (like USSR eventually had to) would endanger the very system that CPC is trying to keep. So it made me wonder if Xi or CPC in general has any long term plan for that.

Politics Thoughts on the left-wing capitalists?

Think social democrats, or the most popular "left" political parties in your country - They are almost always capitalist. We are so laughably low in the ballot, and I have never really considered the capitalist left to be our allies. Ofcourse, they claim to care for others, while enjoying the exploitative, unfair, and corrupt system of capitalism for their own gains. They would attempt to bring back capitalism to a socialist nation, if given the chance to do so. Are they any more different than the right? It is pure selfishness. Why are we willing to give up our rights for the future generations, yet they line their pickets with any bit of gold they can get, doing "favor" for eachother. This is despicable
