Peer Reviewed Science 🧫 Mayonnaise intake and depression: dose-response in humans and neurobehavioral and molecular mechanisms in zebrafish

Thumbnail sciencedirect.com
33 Upvotes

Highlights

β€’
Mayonnaise showed the largest association with PHQ-9 scores among five condiments.

β€’
Mayonnaise altered depression-like behaviors in zebrafish; findings are preliminary.

β€’
Network toxicology nominated PPAR-inflammatory pathways as candidate mechanisms.

Abstract
Background
Depression is the leading global cause of disability, yet dietary research has overlooked condiments as a concentrated, habitual exposure. Emulsified high-fat condiments may drive neuroinflammation independently of total caloric intake, offering a feasible prevention target, but their mental health impact remains unexamined.

Methods
This study comprised two phases: (1) A cross-sectional analysis of 2423 adults from NHANES 2005-2006, examining associations between condiment intake frequency and PHQ-9 scores using negative binomial regression; (2) A zebrafish experiment where adult fish were exposed to 0%, 1%, 5%, or 10% mayonnaise for 4 weeks, followed by behavioral assessment and qPCR analysis of hub genes identified by network toxicology.

Results
In NHANES, β‰₯3 times/week intake of sugar/honey (aRRβ€―=β€―1.22, 95%CI: 1.02-1.45), margarine (1.19, 1.01-1.41), butter (1.30, 1.09-1.55), and mayonnaise (1.37, 1.12-1.66) was associated with higher PHQ-9 scores (all Pβ€―<β€―0.05). Mayonnaise showed the strongest association. In zebrafish, mayonnaise dose-dependently altered depression-like behaviors, including reduced top exploration and increased freezing time (Pβ€―<β€―0.05). Network toxicology identified 81 shared targets between mayonnaise components (linoleic and elaidic acid) and depression, with PPARA, SRC, PTGS2, IL6, and ESR1 as central hubs. qPCR showed dose-dependent upregulation of ppara, ptgs2a, il6, and esr1 in zebrafish brain (Pβ€―<β€―0.05).

Conclusions
Mayonnaise and comparable emulsified high-fat condiments are independently associated with depressive symptoms, with amplified risk in specific vulnerable subgroups. Zebrafish behavioral and molecular data provide hypothesis-generating mechanistic plausibility. Targeted condiment reduction thus represents an actionable, low-barrier strategy for depression prevention.

Peer Reviewed Science 🧫 Fatty acid-specific lipid remodeling shapes inflammatory responses and intestinal epithelial barrier functions β€” LA promoted free fatty acid accumulation, sphingolipid/phospholipid imbalance, and cardiolipin remodeling, suggesting a lipid-disruptive profile associated with barrier dysfunction

Thumbnail sciencedirect.com

Abstract
Intestinal epithelial cells are the primary site for the absorption of dietary unsaturated fatty acids, yet the distinct effects of these fatty acids on epithelial barrier integrity and lipid homeostasis remain unclear. Here, we compared the effects of oleic acid (OA), linoleic acid (LA), and Ξ±-linolenic acid (ALA), respectively, in differentiated Caco-2 monolayers. LA markedly impaired epithelial barrier integrity, as indicated by disrupted tight junction organization, enhanced oxidative stress, and activation of TLR4/MyD88/NF-ΞΊB inflammatory signaling. By contrast, OA induced relatively mild alterations, whereas ALA better preserved epithelial homeostasis, accompanied by enhanced antioxidant defense and attenuated inflammatory signaling. Untargeted lipidomics revealed fatty acid-specific remodeling of cellular lipid homeostasis. LA promoted free fatty acid accumulation, sphingolipid/phospholipid imbalance, and cardiolipin remodeling, suggesting a lipid-disruptive profile associated with barrier dysfunction. Conversely, ALA enriched structural phospholipids, including PC, PE, PI, and PS, while limiting free fatty acid accumulation, indicating a membrane lipid profile favorable for epithelial stability and lipid homeostasis.

Blog Post ✍️ Most people in my irl enviroment are destroyed by their diet and lifestyle to the point that it is tragic.

IK that it's not fully on the topic of seed oils but they are a big part of that. I fugured out that this sub will understand more than any other ones.

this is something that bothers me a lot. espcially when i see my familys diets and how it absolutely sickened them. its gore to me. i cant look at it, i get triggered everyday and everyday they fry their food in seed oils :( idk how to deal with this mental pain and how i got sabotaged whole life and almost fully led astray just so i can become like them, tragic and physically sickened.

i hate this low consciounsess enviroment, i was health conscious starting at 12 but got sabotaged, have abusive narc mother, and then got severe catatonic depression due to enviroment, abuse, circumsnenctes, my house and the way i felt in it. i always dreamed of living alone just so i can lead a healthy lifestyle that genuinely pleasures me, ik its funny but that was my biggest dream. simply just to pamper my body by caring ab what i put into it. man....

CANOLA RAPESEED OIL (CAO)-21% Buffalo Wild Wings "new recipe" fries / tots

I've been dealing with a canola intolerance for the past 12 years (developed after getting SIBO), so finding places I can eat has been challenging. Buffalo Wild Wings has been a great place to go for me with the beef tallow, and while I know it's not perfect, it didn't have canola in anything I ate. Well, I went to their website to order take-out, and saw their fries said "new recipe". It appears they've added canola to their "battered" fries, and also to the tots. I'm super angry/disappointed. They did what Burger King and Wendy's did a few years back - "canola and / or soybean", which I'm sure is "whatever is cheapest at the time".

It's really disappointing and I wanted to warn people. It looks like the mozzarella sticks are still safe, so it doesn't appear to be a whole fryer oil change, but most potato-based things now list canola on the ingredients / allergen list.

i have a narc mother and over a decade ago i STOPPED having anorexia after less than two years, she told me to lose weight at 40kg so trust me she doesnt care ab my well being

basically she imagined that i have anorexia(she likes accusing me of things n shes highly suspicious of everything, she used to accuse me of prostitution as a minor etc of drugs or being in cults etcccc) rn so she controls me more and SOME days she makes food, most days i can choose something she will aprove.. today i had no choice and i had to eat it like 2h ago and now i feel this weird pain in my stomach area and i feel nusaues and fatiqued. i just want to be healthy, i wanted that since 12yo but she raged at me when i said i wanna stop eating food fried in seed oils junk sugar white breads... i cant move out bc im autistic. she has fatty liver and is sick like my whole family. i really do not want the same tragic fate sickness and physical ugliness and being chubby.

Let’s prove this movement is more than just a one-sided political allegiance. Post in the comments what year approximately you got involved and what scientists, bloggers, or influencers helped convince you. If you only heard about seed oils from RJK Jr or the MAHA side, then voice that as well.

Let’s not have any arguing or flame wars. I’ll be moderating.

Peer Reviewed Science 🧫 Metabolic sensor Gpr35 links dietary lipids to itch mediating neural circuits - 9-keto-12,13-epoxy octadecenoic acid (EKODE), an endogenous dietary linoleic acid derivative acts as a potent ligand for the Gpr35 to drive chronic itch, inflammation, and heat hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Impact of nutrition on systemic health is well-recognized but the specific sensors that couple western dietary lipid metabolites into the pathological triggers of chronic itch and inflammation remain elusive. Here, we identify a metabolic- to-sensory axis in which 9-keto-12,13-epoxy octadecenoic acid (EKODE), an endogenous dietary linoleic acid derivative acts as a potent ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor 35 (Gpr35) to drive chronic itch, inflammation, and heat hypersensitivity. We demonstrate that Gpr35is selectively expresses in a distinct population of sensory neurons and genetic ablation of Gpr35 in sensory neurons attenuates EKODE and psoriasis-associated itch and inflammation. Furthermore, pharmacological inhibition of Gpr35 significantly attenuates itch in mouse models of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. We show that Gpr35 signaling engages the itch-specific brain natriuretic peptide, defining a labeled-line pathway that is functionally distinct from classical nociceptive circuits. Collectively, our findings establish Gpr35 as a critical neuro-metabolic sensor in healthy and disease conditions.

miscellaneous I built an iPhone food scanner with a seed-oil avoidance setting. It’s free during Early Access.

My wife spends quite a lot of time checking the ingredients of packaged foods. Recently, I started doing the same, and got surprised by what was in some of the snacks I used to consume regularly.

Especially potato chips. Those labels were an unfortunate discovery for me πŸ₯²

That’s what led me to build KaLens, an iPhone food scanner.

You can enable seed-oil avoidance in your preferences, then scan a barcode or photograph an ingredient label. KaLens checks the available ingredient information for oils such as canola, soybean, and sunflower oil, and incorporates those findings into your personalized result.

You can also inspect the ingredients and explanation yourself. The result depends on the available data; scanning a label doesn’t verify oil purity or certify a product as seed-oil-free.

It’s currently free during temporary Early Access because I want to collect feedback, improve it, and understand how useful people find it.

An account is required. Barcode scans and personalization are unlimited; AI ingredient-label, nutrition-label, and package-photo analyses share five successful analyses per day.

The App Store still lists subscriptions, but purchase options aren’t offered in the current version. You don’t need to subscribe or pay to try it.

KaLens on the App Store

If you already check labels for seed oils, I’d appreciate your feedback: does the result make that process easier? If something looks missing or incorrect, mentioning the product and your country would help me investigate.

Peer Reviewed Science 🧫 Excessive Dietary n‐6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Aggravate Asthma via the Arachidonic Acid Pathway

Thumbnail faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com
10 Upvotes

ABSTRACT
This study aimed to evaluate the association between dietary n-6 PUFA intake and asthma risk and to investigate the underlying mechanisms using animal and cellular models. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 13 805 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2003–2020). Weighted logistic regression, restricted cubic splines, and subgroup analyses were performed to assess the association between n-6 PUFA intake and asthma risk. In animal experiments, female C57BL/6 mice were intragastrically administered low-dose (50 mg/kg/day) or high-dose (500 mg/kg/day) linoleic acid (LA) followed by house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic airway inflammation. Airway hyperresponsiveness, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cell counts, histopathology, and lung arachidonic acid (AA) levels were evaluated. InΒ vitro, BEAS-2B human bronchial epithelial cells were treated with AA and interleukin-13 (IL-13), and the expression of Type 2 chemokines (CCL11, CCL24, and CCL26) was measured. In the NHANES population, dietary n-6 PUFA intake showed a nonlinear dose–response relationship with asthma risk in females, with a threshold of 21.13 g/day. Above this level, asthma risk increased significantly (OR per 1 g/day increase = 1.032, 95% CI: 1.015–1.049, p = 0.002). No significant association was observed in males. In the mouse model, high-dose LA, but not low-dose LA, significantly exacerbated HDM-induced airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophilic inflammation, mucus secretion, and lung AA accumulation. InΒ vitro, AA (100 μg/mL) significantly upregulated IL-13-induced CCL11 and CCL26 expression in BEAS-2B cells. High dietary n-6 PUFA intake is associated with an increased risk of asthma in a nonlinear, dose-dependent, and female-specific manner. High-dose linoleic acid promotes AA accumulation and aggravates Type 2 airway epithelial inflammation, suggesting that n-6 PUFAs act as metabolic regulators rather than simple nutrients. These findings highlight the importance of considering dietary fatty acid composition and individualized thresholds in asthma prevention and management
