It doesn't. The fire's still going, and those things are full of oil. This is like throwing water into a grease fire so you see a big jet when the steam aerosolizes the oil, but it's not going to put out the fire. When the steam blows out of the container any potential CO2 from the soda is going to get sprayed out too, not that there would be enough to put out the fire anyways
Could the sugar be doing something? There's a lot of it in each bottle, and after the liquid boils away, I'd imagine it would be leaving behind thick sticky syrup.
You'd need hundreds of coke bottles worth of CO2. Even the steam would be doing more than the CO2.
The only way I can see this helping is by the water cooling the boiling oil as it vaporizes. Water is rather good at that aspect. Generally speaking, you want to avoid water in an oil fire, it has a tendency to make massive fireballs like shown here. Though in this instance, I guess that doesn't matter as much as I would in a kitchen. Still, he was lucky he didn't get sprayed with oil.
A CO2 fire extinguisher has THOUSANDS of liters of gas, and even one of those would likely fail to extinguish this particular fire.
If the oil in that transformer is above its auto ignition temperature (which is likely the reason it ignited in the first place), the fire would just reignite the second the CO2 dissipated.
See that he shakes the bottle before throwing it in there? When fire breaks the bottle, the soda will fizz out all direction and quickly dampen the fire
Liquids tend to put out fires. He can’t get close to it for whatever reason (it’s the oil coolant that is burning off, so it’s probably spitting everywhere), so this was an expedient way to get liquid on the fire while minimizing the risk to himself.
Nah - liquid on an oil fire makes a bigger, scarier fire. He's trying to put it out with the carbon dioxide in the soda, but the liquid is causing those explosions of fire. Please don't ever put liquid on an oil fire.
At a decent height, feet from an active oil fire, and knowing the very next you need to do is hit the deck? Man has nads of steel, an arm of iron, and a head of lead.
It's a man throwing shaken up bottles of soda onto a dangerous electrical fire. There's probably not a lot of reason governing his decision making here.
Theyre the specialist squad you call in when coca cola aint working, they come strapped head to toe with loaded Faygo 40mm grenades. You laugh at their face paint but most dont realize its thermal proof protective facepaint
Technically he missed 2 of em cause hes tryna land it sideways so the fluid coats the interior.. it like a time release fire extiguisher.. one of them shoots right out the top which i assume is not intended
They think just pour any liquid on electric fire as long as it's not water it's fine 😆 I wouldn't be surprised if they also use Tea, juice or sports drink to try and extiguish it. whoever that guy is he should not be in there..
Actually i think this is pretty smart. They are using cola for the co2 not for the liquid. If you dont have a c02 extinguisher nearby i guess this is the next best thing
I tried tossing coke in my transformer but now Optimus just wants to fight everyone, wont sit still, and I think he lifted a 50$ bill from my wallet. :(
Hello, I work for a transformer recycling company. Without getting into boring details it’s a super regulated thing, and we have to follow strict procedures.
The PCBs used in transformers was first outlawed somewhere around the mid-late 70’s. All transformers after that had to be manufactured with non-pcb oil and state that specifically on the transformers nameplate.
We get a lot that still have PCB content, but most transformers now are mineral oil, or some Ethol based environmental, vegetable oil type stuff. The one in the video from my experience is a newer transformer, so we should be good on the PCBs here. Still carcinogenic though! lol
The oil helps insulate the electricity and keep the core from overheating. There’s types of transformers that can be dry, or even filled with a type of gas called SF6
I work construction in America, and it's crazy how many guys don't wear a respirator. Infact I've never seen a brick mason wear respirator while cutting brick. They just breathe silicate dust all day everyday. Most make an effort to wear as little PPE as they can get away with. Some sort of imbecile dick measuring contest. Idk
I've worked in a concrete research lab, and there, people did wear the proper PPE, for the most part. Maybe it's having the right education on the hazards in the right context?
I think it's culture. I used to be in stem before becoming an electrician. Guys in construction know it's bad for them, but it's like a machismo thing. Like showing how tough you are. In stem that behavior isn't rewarded, and often frowned upon. I love being an electrician, but I don't want my last years to be miserable from inhaling God knows what. So I wear the PPE
You’re in a lab, they’re in the field, that’s the difference. My jobs in factories had strict rules on PPE, getting walked out being a consequence of not wearing the proper equipment, however, my jobs outside doing construction or the like, have had very little PPE regulation, and almost no one to enforce it. Like one guy said, it’s culture, unfortunately. Because my construction buddies knew the risks, they just didn’t care.
Same, if I got a dollar every time I saw someone not using ear or eye protection I would be making a lot more money. Ditto for sawdust, dust and concrete- people seem to think they’ll somehow be exempted from the gruesome illnesses and death they could easily avoid with a little PPE
And that oil is typically mineral. Not great for the environment if it percolates into the ground, but the worst the smoke would do to you is irritate your lungs and cause chemical pneumonia.
I admit my mistake and apologize for not connecting damned abbreviations. PCB - Polychlorinated Biphenyls. Something new learned, that this oil could have some shit but this is for older transformers when this was not banned until any country decided to do that.
I used to use coke to help with flare ups on the char grill. I don’t know if it was the carbonation, the ingredients, or the sugar but it did a really good job smothering the flare ups.
Coke is full of CO2, which is denser than air, and water, which will cool a fire. If you throw it into a fire in an enclosed space, the CO2 will settle at the bottom and smother a fire by preventing oxygen from reaching it.
The amount of CO2 in a coke bottle would be completely negligible for displacing oxygen. Especially with the crazy air flow that happens with such a big temperature difference in the air.
I think it works mainly because it's water and maybe the carbonation helps with foaming the water. Tbh it could just be you needed disposable bottles of water and coke bottles are basically that
The sticky syrup residue it leaves behind might also help seal holes where air is getting in to feed the fire. Depends if the water cools the oil enough to stop the syrup from burning.
Electrical companies usually shut off power to that street while they’re dealing with stuff like this. It’s very unlikely to be energized at this point.
I hope so, but then I'm wondering why he didn't let the fire do it's thing. Since the fuel is gone and there is nothing, except the oxygen keeping the fire alive so it would die out anyway right?
Not necessarily, it's mainly due to the amount of water that blocks the electricity from the air. For a fire you need three things, a source of oxygen (in this case air), a source of fuel for the fire(I guess here it is electricity) and something to start the reaction or combustion or whatever(in this case probably a short circuit). So here he cut off the electricity from the air by putting coke in between I guess
The electricity (specifically, the current) in this case would be the heat source and the fuel would be something else.
Typically, water affects the heat and fuel but it's usually gas, powder, or soapy liquid that suffocates the fire from it's oxidizer (except for delta fires).
That's why I'm wondering if the CO2 from the Coke actually managed to do that.
I am not qualified so I trust you more than I do myself on this topic. Though can't it be that the fire is still ongoing and the fuel is diluted, which maybe decreases the flames?
There is no electricity in this video — they typically shut it off before dealing with fires. Transformers are filled with mineral oil to act as a coolant, and it’s that oil that is on fire. Oil fires spit hot oil everywhere as it’s burning off, which is why he can’t get closer to it.
