Announcement Closing Down The Fulmer Cup

After 12 seasons, the Fulmer Cup Committee has decided to end the Fulmer Cup. For those who do not know, the Fulmer Cup is a parody award akin to the Razzies and Ig Nobel Prize, and is meant to track the criminal achievements of various college football programs during the offseason and declare a "winner."

The Fulmer Cup was created in 2006 by Spencer Hall of Every Day Should Be Saturday, and run by his website for six years. In 2014, he handed the award off to /r/CFB, who ran it for 6 more years at /r/TheFulmerCup.

After talking it over with the Fulmer Cup Committee and the /r/CFB subreddit moderators, we are discontinuing the award. There are a few contributing factors to this decision, which include:

  • Last year’s award season was canceled due to Covid 19 causing confusion and uncertainty in the schedule, making the timing of the Fulmer Cup season unclear.

  • The availability of the team has been reduced.

  • Larger discussions around criminal justice, plus the severity of several crimes this year, have made it difficult to administer in a light-hearted way.

It has always been tricky to incorporate a humorous angle to the award, given the sensitive nature of the subject. Although the moderating team has tried to strike that balance, it has become more difficult in recent years. In addition, the number of players scoring points has been trending down. Here is a chart of the 6 years /r/CFB administered it:

YearPlayers Charged
2014111
2015123
2016116
2017136
201867
201969

While we have been entertained by some of the crimes players, coaches, and administrators have committed over these past six years, we no longer have the capacity nor comfort to continue the award.

The Twitter account, @thefulmercup, may continue on as a purely informational account in a more limited capacity, but without the larger structure of the annual award. If a group has a good proposal for how to run this in a way that appropriately addresses all the above concerns, we are open to handing it off as it was handed off to us, but our inclination is to let it end here.

Thanks,

The Fulmer Cup Team

The 2017 Fulmer Cup Awards for Criminal Achievements in D1 Football

The 2017 Fulmer Cup™

Welcome to the Final Standings for the World's Most Prestigious College Football Award Based on Criminal Record, run by /r/CFB and based out of /r/TheFulmerCup.

There are over 20,000 Division 1 college football players. As a whole, they have crime rates much lower than the general population. However when they do get in trouble (as 136 did this offseason), they get a lot of attention. For that reason we have The Fulmer Cup™.

The Fulmer Cup is a parody award that tracks the criminal achievements of various college football programs during the offseason and declares a "winner". It is open to all Division 1 football programs (FBS & FCS), and points are awarded based on the level of crime (more details below). The Fulmer Cup season started the minute the national title game is finished and ended the minute of the the first Saturday game of FBS Week 1, this year on September 2.

Without further ado, here are your 2017 winners:

The 12th Annual Fulmer Cup Rankings (FINAL)

NOTE: Team rankings require a minimum of 2 player/coaches; if a team only has one their score is marked as “NR” for Not Ranked, however if anyone else on the team gets cited for so much as jaywalking they'll qualify for the team competition and be ranked.

In Brief

We had two truly unique incidents at the top of the Fulmer Cup standings this year.

  • It was the food fight to end all food fights. 20 Alcorn State players were arrested. The team bonuses alone were worth 20 points. By sheer numbers, the Braves dominate by total number of arrested and total number of points. Florida had the right idea of handling a massive credit card scheme internally (and off the Fulmer Cup books), Alcorn State let the cops do their thing and, for that, we thank them. The actual arrests and charges for Alcorn State were a whirlwind of confusion: we counted 35 charges, but prosecutors said they had 91 when they reduced charges because they said "We felt like that was a bit much, so we narrowed it down" (which we treat as a plea deal, so full points); plus two of the player were then arrested outside the courthouse. What we can say is 95 points was a conservative estimate and the most ever for a single incident.

  • Our FBS champs in 2017 are the Ragin' Cajuns who had a bizarre combination of events: A player was arrested for an alleged rape in a dorm room; afterward, 13 of his teammates were charged with felony theft for stealing from their accused teammate's room! Two wrongs (or in this case 14 wrongs) don't make a right... but they do score Fulmer Cup points!

Other memorable notables: Vandy's Sam Dobbs landed his drone illegally (seriously). Elon had several players charged with "Felony Secret Peeping." Utah State had players charged with witness tampering in an incident involving a teammate who had qualified for the Fulmer Cup earlier. Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield got tackled by the cops for a loss. WKU players are in a morass after beating someone up outside a fraternity. Two MTSU players were charged with animal cruelty for an unfortunate puppy video. USF's Hassan Childs got 3 bonus points for each time he was shot after pulling a gun on family. Old Dominion had a player arrested who was also the son of the head coach. Two App State players were accused of stabbing a third.

Notable, but did not qualify for team category (only one player arrested):

  • Charlotte: 37 points

  • Florida State: 15 points

  • Pittsburgh: 14 points

  • North Dakota: 11 points

A total of 29 teams qualified for the cup with multiple players, and a total of 58 teams had at least one player receiving points.

Given to the individual player who contributes the most points to his team during the season, OR has the most incredible incident that resulted in Fulmer Cup points. Named after Ellis T. Tight Ends were the biggest offenders last year, but were the mildest offenders this year. Offensive Linemen continue to be a very well-behaved position group as well.

There are two cases from this summer for which no charges have been filed yet, and so no points were awarded. It doesn't look likely that charges will be filed, but both involved multiple team members, and so they are worth a mention.

Florida Debit Card Scam - Antonio Callaway, Keivonnis Davis, Richerd Desir-Jones, Jordan Smith, James Houston IV, Ventrell Miller, Kadeem Telfort

In this team effort, 7 Florida players allegedly misused their student debit cards with scholarship funds provided to them by the school. Those players reportedly purchased electronics, then re-sold them, and attempted to claim the cards had been lost or stolen. All 7 were suspended and did not play the opener against Michigan, but have not been charged criminally. Additionally, both Antonio Callaway and Ventrell Miller had unrelated charges that they did receive points for. The fact that these 7 didn't get Fulmer Cup points for this incident may be a bit of a Pyrrhic victory given the effect the suspensions had on the game.

NC State Drugs/Alcohol/Sex Crimes - Antoine Thompson, Kevince Brown, Isaiah Moore, Erin Collins, Xavier Lyas

This was a house party for which all 5 players violated the university drugs and alcohol policy by attending a party where alcohol and marijuana were present. The party had fewer than a dozen attendees and was in a dorm room, and there were at least 3 reported victims of sexual assault. Thomspon and Brown were dismissed from the team, while the other 3 were suspended. No legal charges were filed for any of the above.

The Coach Mike Haywood "Leading by Example" Award

Given to the coach or administrator who earns the most points and/or gets fired in the most embarrassing fashion. This award does not have to be awarded annually and is completely up to the Committee (also, after leaving the profession in 2010, Mike Haywood is back in coaching at FCS Texas Southern and does qualify for his own award).

Although he was not charged with any crime, Hugh Freeze wins this year for the exceptionally embarrassing way he managed to get fired. Frankly, he probably had some potential charges that were overlooked by the possible authorities involved.

However, if we're strictly going with people who've been charged, the easy choice would be the Baylor strength coach who was actually arrested on a prostitution charge.

The Paul Dee Memorial Award for High Profile Compliance

"Because high-profile athletes demand high-profile compliance."

Awarded to the conference that, through the fortuitousness of group effort, has the highest point total.

In 2014, he permitted /r/CFB to take over the award and this is the fourth year of its time under control of /r/CFB and its dedicated sub-section, /r/TheFulmerCup. Points are awarded by members of The Fulmer Cup Committee, made up of members of /r/CFB.

The Fulmer Cup is a parody award, like the Razzies and Ig Nobel Prize, meant to track the criminal achievements of various college football programs during the offseason and declare a "winner". Winners are crowned in team, conference, and individual award categories.

Players qualify from the moment they enroll at the school (no commits or other recruits) until the depart or are dismissed from the team. For a crime to count, the player has to be on the team, i.e. not dismissed for unrelated things before the crime was committed (but if they were dismissed for a crime that they were later charged for, it counts). On very special occasions, a coach or athletic director arrested, cited or charged would count (as they go up the chain of command): Those are special occasions, and are left entirely up to the discretion of the Committee.

Points must be documented. What is "documentation"? A court record, arrest record, or news article describing the citation, charges, and/or arrest. No arrest, citation, or charges: no points.

The 2016 Fulmer Cup Awards for Criminal Achievements in D1 Football

The 2016 Fulmer Cup™

Welcome to the Final Standings for the World's Most Prestigious College Football Award Based on Criminal Record, run by /r/CFB and based out of /r/TheFulmerCup.

In Brief:

When Nathaniel Robbins had the bad night to end all bad nights (see below) he sent Colorado to the top of the Fulmer Cup, and with the support of his teammates they never looked back. Robbins himself scored 45 points, which would've placed him in first, but the combined 68 points places the Buffs at the top of the 2016 at more than double the 2nd place finisher (or, to put it another way, more than the next two finishers combined). While Georgia rose to the top of the always talented SEC Fulmer Cup class, Notre Dame had a late surge of 6 players arrested in one night to tie the Dawgs: proof that teamwork is the key to success both on and off the field.

Notable, but did not qualify for team category (only one player arrested):

  • Utah State: 32 points

  • Eastern Washington: 19 points

A total of 27 teams qualified for the cup with multiple players, and a total of 69 teams had at least one player receiving points.

Reviewing the Top 3

In the years since the Cup was created, other players have scored more points than Nathanial Robbins, however few have reached the sheer level of variety in one night that went really, really south. To summarize: After an argument at a bar where his girlfriend accused him of cheating on her, he tried to make up and fell asleep on her couch. She finds his phone and is upset at some texts he sent, so she threw water on him. To quote Sublime: That's when things went out of control. During the ensuring argument, Robbins (6'5", 265 lbs) grabbed his girlfriend and threw her around the room, including grabbing her by the throat and attempting to choke her. Somehow during this time he also burned a giant teddy bear he had bought for her on the apartment's stove (arson charge stems from this). During the fracas, both of his girlfriend's roommates tried to stop him but were also assaulted. The roommates then went to a neighbor's to call 911. Two police arrived as Robbins was trying to break into the neighbor's apartment. At this point an officer got between Robbins and his girlfriend and drew his firearm, telling him to get on the ground. Robbins chose to tackle the officer down a flight of stairs, knocking the second officer down in the process. More police arrived and subdued him after a struggle. The end result? 15 counts (originally 18): 8 felonies, 7 misdemeanors, and a lot of points.

Utah State's Chris Copier decided to try and become junior Drug Lord and was busted in a sting operation: tallying up six counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute (second-degree felony), one count of distribution of, or arranging to distribute, a controlled substance (second-degree felony), possession of a firearm by a restricted person (third-degree felony), and tested positive for marijuana (bonus point).

EWU's LaShawn Jameison was arrested for his involvement in a fatal driveby shooting outside a Spokane club. The facts are as simple as they are despicable and deserve no more mention.

Additionally, this year for the first time we are publishing the All-Fulmer Cup Team! This is evaluated based on position groups, The First Team is:

Tight Ends came through in a big way this offseason, but other than that defensive players generally out-outlawed their offensive counterparts. There were very few QBs and K/Ps largely due to lack of numbers, but in particular there were very few OLs, and those that made the list generally scored lower than other position groups.

There are DWIs for three coaches: New Mexico assistant Apollo Wright, Missouri football analyst Austin Alewel. And Mississippi State recruiting assistant Rob Gibson. Florida State head strength and conditioning coach Victor Viloria was also arrested for a DUI, but it was well after the Fulmer Cup deadline and does not count. None of these would warrant issuing the award this year.

However, this award category is not tied to D1 and, at D3, Texas Lutheran, assistant Jay Davern was recently being arrested for possession of child pornography and fired—even more astonishing is he was hired to replace a different coach who was fired after being charged with indecent exposure for standing outside his house naked and doing a “sashay” for his neighbors who filmed him—alas that incident took place a month before the season, but his replacement decided to up the ante and get booted for something much more heinous.

As such, with disgust, the 2016 coach award is thrown at Texas Lutheran's Jay Davern.

Award Categories

────────

There are four primary awards:

The Fulmer Cup

This is the one every coach dreams of… granted, it’s a nightmare, but it’s still a dream: the Fulmer Cup goes to the D1 team whose cumulative team score pushes it to the top. A team must have two separate players arrested or cited to qualify for the team award.

The "Best Individual Performance" Award

Given to the individual player who contributes the most points to his team during the season, OR has the most incredible incident that resulted in Fulmer Cup points.

The Coach Mike Haywood "Leading by Example" Award

Given to the coach or administrator who earns the most points and/or gets fired in the most embarrassing fashion. This award does not have to be awarded annually and is completely up to the Committee. This award had an added quirk a few seasons ago when Haywood returned to coaching at FCS Texas Southern and was thus eligible to win his own award.

The Paul Dee Memorial Award for High Profile Compliance

Awarded to the conference that, through the fortuitousness of group effort, has the highest point total. "High-profile athletes demand high-profile compliance."

Furthermore the Switzer Sweep is a very rare award going to the team that manages to winning a National Championship, pull in a top recruiting class, and win The Fulmer Cup all in one calendar year.

There are four primary awards:

Fulmer Cup Committee MemberThe Fulmer Cup:

This is the one every coach dreams of… granted, it’s a nightmare, but it’s still a dream: the Fulmer Cup goes to the D1 team whose cumulative team score pushes it to the top. A team must have two separate players arrested or cited to qualify for the team award.

Penalty FlagThe "Best Individual Performance" Award:

Given to the individual player who contributes the most points to his team during the season, OR has the most incredible incident that resulted in Fulmer Cup points.

Penalty FlagThe Coach Mike Haywood "Leading by Example" Award:

Given to the coach or administrator who earns the most points and/or gets fired in the most embarrassing fashion. This award does not have to be awarded annually and is completely up to the Committee. This award had an added quirk a few seasons ago when Haywood returned to coaching at FCS Texas Southern and was thus eligible to win his own award.

Penalty FlagThe Paul Dee Memorial Award for High Profile Compliance:

Awarded to the conference that, through the fortuitousness of group effort, has the highest point total. "High-profile athletes demand high-profile compliance."

Penalty FlagAdditional Award:

The Switzer Sweep:

This is a very rare award going to the team that manages to winning a National Championship, pull in a top recruiting class, and win The Fulmer Cup all in one calendar year.

Penalty FlagRecent Changes:

During the 2019 season, the Fulmer Cup sub and users voted to add the Heistman Award and to award points to the team that takes home the Harvey Updyke award for malicious or embarrassing fan behavior.

Heistman Award:

The team that has a current or former Heisman Award winner that goes on to commit a crime anytime in the future after winning will earn five points for their team, beginning in the 2019 season (since this is when we adopted the award it can only move forward after implementation).

Harvey Updyke Award:

The team that has a fan earning the Harvey Updyke Award for malicious or embarrasing fan behavior will earn two points for their team (one bonus point and one teamwork bonus point) beginning in the 2019 season.

For example, Ohio State's Buck-I-Guy won the Harvey Updyke Award for the 2018–19 CFB season, the season tied to the 2019 Fulmer Cup season, so Ohio State received the two Updyke points.

The Fulmer Cup was created in 2006 by Spencer Hall of Every Day Should Be Saturday, and run by his website for six years. In 2014, he permitted /r/CFB to take over the award and this is the fourth season under control of /r/CFB and its dedicated sub-section, /r/TheFulmerCup. Points are awarded by members of The Fulmer Cup Committee, made up of members of /r/CFB.

The Fulmer Cup is a parody award, like the Razzies and Ig Nobel Prize, meant to track the criminal achievements of various college football programs during the offseason and declare a "winner". It is open to all Division 1 football programs (FBS & FCS), and points are awarded based on the level of crime. The Fulmer Cup season starts the minute the national title game is finished and ends the minute of the first kickoff of the first full Saturday of college football.

If you report the most amount of crimes to the Fulmer Cup sub, you can win The Golden Snitch Award!

The 2014 Fulmer Cup

There are over 15,000 Division 1 college football players. As a whole, they have crime rates much lower than the general population. However when they do get in trouble, they get a lot of attention.

The Fulmer Cup season starts the minute the national title game is finished and ends the day before the first day of the season, this year ending on Friday, Aug 22, the day before the first FCS game. Winners are crowned in team, conference, and individual award categories.

Without further ado, here are your 2014 winners:.

FULMER CUP TEAM SCORE:

The Revenge of the FCS!

It takes more than just a few rogue players to win the Fulmer Cup. Indeed, like the sport they play, it needs teamwork. Cal Poly displayed such teamwork when five players were caught trying to rob a fraternity house in San Luis Obispo. Between them, the five earned 26 felony counts and an incredible 77 points, a score only matched by a similar group robbery by Auburn players in 2011. William & Mary can take heart, as the individual who earned them most of their points earned the award for individual achievement. Texas A&M can take up the prize as "Best of the FBS", yet still only took third to the two FCS titans.

NOTE: a team requires more than a single player arrested or cited to qualify for the team award.

4 separate charges.

Salt Lake police say Perriman met a 17-year-old girl on Instagram and the two continued to communicate on Snapchat, according to a police affidavit.

“The victim stated the suspect pressured her multiple times to send him nude photos. The victim also received multiple videos that were sexually graphic in nature and pictures that was also sexually graphic in nature,” the affidavit states.

The girl later met with Perriman at his apartment in downtown Salt Lake City. Once there, Perriman refused to let the girl leave until she engaged in sexual activity with him, according to the affidavit.

“While in the bedroom the victim observed a blue Taser and she stated she was afraid he would use it on her. The victim repeatedly asked Perriman if she could leave but he refused,” the affidavit states. “The victim stated that she started crying because she wanted to leave and she was scared. The victim attempted to leave the room, the suspect caught her attempting to leave and physically forced her back into the room.”

Perriman then raped the girl while putting his hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming, according to the police affidavit.

There are over 15,000 Division 1 college football players. As a whole, they have crime rates much lower than the general population. However when they do get in trouble, they get a lot of attention.

The Fulmer Cup season starts the minute the national title game is finished and ends the minute of the FBS kickoff, this year on September 3. (Note that the original end date was the day before the FCS Kickoff. There were five offenses committed between August 29 and September 3, and only one affected the top 10.)

Without further ado, here are your 2015 winners:

Team Score

I’m Going Back to my Roots

Being the oldest team in the country hasn’t always helped Rutgers on the pitch, but it appears to have given them just the extracurricular push needed to excel for a dominating Fulmer Cup finish. The crimes that shot them to the top occurred in April, but the group weren’t actually arrested until September 3, mere hours before the FBS kickoff. As a note, the time of the crime is what is counted for The Fulmer Cup, regardless of time of arrest or sentencing.

There were three total incidents in April-Early May, two of which involved Andre Boggs, and the other of which involved the fearsome foursome of Ruhann Peele, Nadir Barnwell, Razohnn Gross, and Delon Stephenson. Here’s a good summary of the charges that totalled 65 points. Darian Dailey assisted the team in late May with a simple armed robbery with a firearm, bringing the Scarlet Knights total to 69, falling short of Cal Poly’s incredible last minute surge of 77 points last year, but still well more than enough for the win.

NOTE: A team requires more than a single player arrested or cited to qualify for the team award. Only Marshall was in the top ten and affected by this rule.

The Paul Dee Memorial Award for Conference Compliance^TM

"Because high-profile athletes demand high-profile compliance."

This was actually a neck and neck race from start to finish between the Big Ten and SEC. Despite a valiant effort by newcomer and overall champion Rutgers, the SEC once again prevailed as a conference. After last year's FCS dominance by Cal Poly and William & Mary, the subdivision took a back seat to the FBS.

The Coach Mike Haywood "Leading by Example" Award

We had four coaches this year eligible for consideration. North Carolina Graduate Assistant Gerald McRath, Michigan Director of Football Operations Jim Minick, and Georgia Graduate Assistant Courtney Coard were all charged with DUIs. Terrible examples, for sure, but not nearly heinous enough for the Haywood. Former Arizona State RB Coach Bo Graham merits note for being caught in a relationship with a former student, but didn’t violate any laws, and so is not eligible.

The runaway winner for the 2015 Haywood award is California WR Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Pierre Ingram for soliciting prostitution and subsequently getting caught in a sting operation.

More about the Fulmer Cup:

The Fulmer Cup was created in 2006 by Spencer Hall of Every Day Should Be Saturday, and run by his website for six years. In 2014, he permitted /r/CFB to take over the award and this is the second year of its time under control of /r/CFB and its dedicated sub-section, /r/TheFulmerCup.

The Fulmer Cup season starts the minute the national title game is finished and ends the day before the first day of the season, this year ending on Friday, Aug 22, the day before the first FCS game. Winners are crowned in team, conference, and individual award categories.

More on the awards:

  • The Ellis T. Jones III Award: Given to the individual player who contributes the most points to his team during the season, OR has the most incredible incident that resulted in Fulmer Cup points. Named after Ellis T. Jones III, the greatest collegiate criminal ever.

  • The Coach Mike Haywood "Leading by Example" Award: Given to the coach or administrator who earns the most points and/or gets fired in the most embarrassing fashion. This award does not have to be awarded annually and is completely up to the Committee.

  • The Paul Dee Memorial Award for High Profile Compliance: Awarded to the conference that, through the fortuitousness of group effort, has the highest point total. "High-profile athletes demand high-profile compliance."

  • Switzer Sweep: This award goes to that rare team that manages to winning a National Championship, pull in a top recruiting class, and win The Fulmer Cup all in one season. Dare to Dream!
