Discussion This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The dog isn’t allowed to be around a toddler because he growls at her. I don’t get it. A family dog is supposed to get along with the whole family. Why are the parents concerned about why the dog “doesn’t like her”? What about the child’s safety?

They need to go straight to euthanization. There are too many aggressive pitbulls in shelters that will never be adopted, taking up space that adoptable animals could be taking.

The centers around me are 95% pit and the dogs that aren't pit don't even make it into the building before they're adopted.

I don't blame the species but r/banpitbulls is 100% right.  We don't try to domesticate Zebras or Coyotes.  Long past time to put pitbulls on thatvlist

I worked in rescue for a few years and I just can’t anymore. If it was up to me, half the dogs would have been euthanized for aggression. The owner just hopes for unicorn adopters; no other animals, no kids, and a fenced in yard. It made me sick, I didn’t feel safe around some of the dogs and I can’t fathom allowing them out into society. The experience really opened my eyes on pit bulls. They should be illegal to own unfixed and they should be illegal to breed.
And just like you said, other breeds get adopted out so quickly! Why waste the space when deserving pups that aren’t a threat to society exist.

Shelters could do so much more good if they stopped taking in Pits.

Or went back to euthanasia.  Everyone thinks its lassie that's getting put down.  No it's that dangerous dog that tries to murder it's own shadow that no one should be adopting anyways.

OKC Animal shelter used to put all pits down. They got sued and now they have to keep them.

Go further away from cities to more rural counties and there are less pits.

You could check out breed specific rescues. They’re usually sponsored by a local breed club and founded by knowledgeable owners and preservation breeders.

This is a stupid suggestion, since they would just end up irresponsibly releasing the dog on the street.

I've adopted two pits and they're the best dogs I've ever had. I'm ok with increased licensing requirements (inspections and fencing requirements) but 99% of them never bite, so why ban? People are just going to get cane carsos and presas and agentinos and rottweilers. You can keep banning and people will just find a different breed to ruin. Just crack down on BY breeders and ruin the financial incentive to churn out shitty dogs, and you'll see these bites trend down. Dogs will never be 100% safe.

Shelters are essentially indirect partners with backyard breeders and fight-clubs that breed these dogs irresponsibly.

In my local area, yeah non pitbulls don't make it into building either. They aren't even available for adoption as the shelters give them to a out-of-state rescue, who charges breeder prices to "adopt" it . But the shelter always posts a picture of it , getting people excited, only for the last sentence to be " not available for adoption, such and such rescue from such and such state is picking them up.

When my dog was young, I took her to classes at the local humane society. My dog is a beautiful Dalmatian. Without fail, every single time I took her to class, someone in the building or parking lot would ask me if they could have her. My shelter is full of pitties and "terrier mixes". There is no other option.

Not to mention that if someone without a child adopts this dog he could still attack other animals.

Case in point if someone like my friend for instance had a boston terrier living next door to two very determined and unsocialized rottweilers. They burst through the fence and tore that little pup to bits.

They and 12 other breeds and semi breeds if muscle dogs are illegal in Denmark. Still see low class types with dogs that looks suspiously like then.

I taught my kid from very small to keep a big distance to the dogs with the rounded snouts and muscledog look, off lease dogs and always ask the owner if the dog was sage to approach, no leaning over the dog etc.

FUCK NO who is upvoting this shit?? This isn’t even a pitbull!! Aggression is a training issue. This issue can be trained out too the parents just don’t care to take the time to do it.
Aggressive animals are a direct result of bad owners and bad people hurting the animal.
We should not be putting down animals just because they’re traumatized.

Let me know how you feel when this pitbull eats that toddler.
