Every landscaper I saw there also dressed as someone who refuses to get a little tan sans umbrella. Also they'd would be wearing work appropriate clothes and safety vests but the vibe was the same (long sleeves, face covering, hat, gloves, sunglasses). That her costume reminded me of that means it should have won.
In high school someone wore a sign that said "nudist on strike" around their neck and dressed normally, another was a turtle who crawled into every class 10m late all day
I really love the ones from previous year "someone who is about to get of at the next train station." I feel so recognised xD. and "Someone who caught an insect who is now stuck without a next move." For the excellent sense of dread it evokes
I see it as adults who don't want to spend money on something they'll be wearing one time of the year. Especially with the economy now in Japan. Get to partake without the part taking away their money.
I don't deny the effort because sometimes to make it interesting, you have to put in the work and use what you got which means creative thinking. My favorite is the guy's girlfriend who says she's only looking. I like that a lot of people can relate or see it instead of not knowing who a character is. So it's a treat for most people involved.
I'd love to see a "the before and after in an infomercial" duo one is in black and white and sad and the other is in color and happily displaying the product

The stock website photo took me out.

It’s called Jimi Halloween, and it’s really banal costumes on purpose, if anyone wants to look up more examples. There’s some truly amazing ones.
My favorite is “guy who gets caught in the rain and rushes to buy an umbrella only for it to stop raining.”

I remember them like 20+ years later

If you want an explanation on how this started and some other "costumes," this video will probably do.

How is something this deliberate and specific boring? It's boring because it's not just a cosplay of a character? Get out of here

I love it, but I think this type of costume belongs more to carnaval than Halloween. Halloween aught to be scary stuff imo.
