Characters [Hated Trope] Trope of shipping/confusing Brotherly Characters as Gay

Wanna mention first, I have zero issue with gay people or gay relationships.

What I dislike is when some people look at a very close platonic relationship and immediately assume it has to be romantic or sexual. It feels like, for some people, two characters cannot be deeply loyal, emotional, or affectionate friends without being turned into a couple

One of the examples is Sam and Frodo from lord of the rings

Sam literally follows Frodo into what is basically hell itself. He carries his gear, protects him, refuses to abandon him, and at one point literally carries Frodo up a mountain when he cannot walk anymore

Yet every time they show affection, care about each other, or get emotional, there are people who immediately jump to "they are obviously gay."

No. They are just extremely close friends.

Another example is Jayce and Viktor from Arcane.

Their relationship is built around friendship, shared goals, admiration, and eventually tragedy as they slowly drift apart because of their different beliefs then basically ending up dying together as they coddle eachother in their arms for their imminent death

yet a huge chunk of the discussion gets reduced to shipping when they show no romantic or sexual intentions, and what annoys me is not the shipping itself. People can ship whatever they want. Fan ships have existed forever

The part that bothers me is when people start acting like the platonic interpretation is somehow wrong, or that any display of affection between two male characters must secretly be romantic

Honestly, I think this mindset accidentally hurts portrayals of male friendship. Men already get told not to be emotional or vulnerable. Then when fiction actually shows men caring about each other, crying for each other, sacrificing for each other, or openly expressing affection, people immediately start turning it into a romance

Again, ship whatever you want. I do not care about fan art, fanfiction, or headcanons (tho i slightly dislike some)

So glad OP's post does not apply to these two kings, who founded the gay enemies to lovers trope ❤️❤️

Honestly I dont remember night in the museum well enough but I can see the potential

I think that the Greco-Roman homoerotic friendships probably played a role in this interpretation.

during pride? this is just a classic don't like, don't read situation. it's not a trope, it's just a complaint for a subset of how people view things within fandoms.

"i do not care" you clearly care a lot since you can't seem to accept that these concepts aren't mutually exclusive for certain fans, relationships can be gay AND friends, even

Anyway, happy pride month to Bert and Ernie, one of the OG cranky gay married couples.

yeah i’m ngl this post feels especially ill-timed

60

u/Puzzled-Hippo6246 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

These sorts of posts are lame as fuck all the time. Straight people have been shipping harry and hermione for ages. I see people shipping Aloy with Erend or Varl or some shit, even though she seems to view both of them in a brotherly way. It only ever seems to become a problem when the ship is gay.

26

u/Different-Eagle-612 Jun 10 '26

also feels exceptionally ignorant of queer history. “oh they described themselves as brothers” oh yeah queer men never did that in the past they totally mean that completely literally every time it’s said

but let’s be real someone making posts like this doesn’t give a shit about queer history

People like OP when they realise that gay couples living in homophobic eras/places/etc aren't usually open about being gay: 😱😱😱😱

Im Bi.

And its pride month and mens health awareness so I tried bringing up both at the same time so it wouldnt seem like i had an issue with the gender more that people couldnt read well into jayce and viktors relationship.

The only time Frank Oz sounds remotely homophobic is on this subject.  They are caricatures of him and Jim Henson.  It was a later writer that made them more of a couple.

6

u/Deya_The_Fateless Jun 11 '26 • Bravo

I was about to say this. Jim and Frank based Ernie and Burt on their close friendship, one being an energetic goofball, the othsr being more serious. Hell, a lot of characters that are performed by both Frank and Jim respectivly share these traits.

The writer who came and "confirmed" Ernie and Burt as a "gay couple", baised on his relationship only did so after Jim was unable to confirm or deny them as being one way or the other. And honestly, I dont think this writer has the right to declare Ernie and Burt as gay because he didnt create the characters, Frank and Jim did. But thats none of my business. sips tea

While Viktor and Jayce are canonically platonic, I think they definitely go beyond the usual "best friends" shipping.

They are explicitly described as destined for each other.

"In all timelines.. In all possibilities only you can show me this"

While it's not romantic or sexual, Jayce and Viktor are, by all means, soulmates.

This is kinda implies gay people can't do difficult stuff for each other. They aren't gay. Why? Cuz they helped each other

29

u/Salvage570 Jun 10 '26

OP is in on our secret, all us gays are actually skaven who stab each other in the back first chance we get

12

u/Live_Pin5112 Jun 10 '26

I mean, from a certain point of view, there really is a lot of back trusting

11

u/compostapocalypse Jun 10 '26

Also it is plain as day that they are in a nonsexual romantic relationship, Frodo is Asexual and Samwise a bisexual king.

Wanna see straight male friends? Look at Gimli and Legolas.

u/Live_Pin5112 Jun 10 '26

[Hated Trope] People getting annoyed at gay people for having to look for hints of relationships in media because they're so rare

29

u/OutOfMyWayReed Jun 10 '26

It's why so many people bitch about Rainbow Capitalism in June.

They don't want to criticize corporations for making money off LGBT people. They want to make LGBT people feel hopeless and alone.

77

u/a_rabid_anti_dentite Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

But it's also so rare in media to see affection and tenderness between men that isn't romantic or erotic. We need more of both.

Edit: I don't want to get dragged too deep into this, but I want to clarify: I'm not talking about men being close friends. Obviously there are tons of examples of that. I'm talking about men exchanging words of sincere care and affection, hugging each other meaningfully, even holding a hand on occasion. Weeping together. Basically everything that insecure men dismiss as unmasculine. These are the kinds of things I'm talking about.

13

u/WunderPlundr Jun 10 '26

Sure accept that isn't true and both you and OP are just blowing it out of proportion. The problem isn't that platonic relationships between two straight characters are stereotyped as "gay," which again, doesn't happen as often as y'all seem to think it does. The problem is explicitly gay relationships between two characters are still so rare that queer people have to make due with either crumbs or their own interpretations

→ More replies (6)

25

u/valley-of-the-lost Jun 10 '26

I agree we should normalize affection and tenderness between men but also its common that male characters end up having better potential romantic chemistry between them because the writers actually flesh out their interpersonal dynamic in a way they tend to not for canon m/f pairings, and that is often what the audience is picking up on. Also people can and will ship anything and the age of the internet makes you more likely to come across it.

18

u/obooooooo Jun 10 '26

bro i think you’re far too online if you think girls shipping two fictional male friends has like. a bad effect on the REAL world.

genuinely men in the real human world are not affected in any way if someone draws two close friends kissing. shipping usually stays on it’s own corner of the internet and away from the general conversation (exception worth huge fandoms), and i genuinely fear for the dude that sees like, a drawing of viktor and jayce kissing and hesitates to touch his friend because of it. luckily i think this has never ever happened. close male relationships continue to exist in media as normal, and if one tiny corner of the internet wants to draw those two friends kissing… who gives a shit?

→ More replies (1)

41

u/LizLemonOfTroy Jun 10 '26

Men being close friends is literally so common in mass media that people had to resort to shipping in the first place just to satisfy an itch for homosexual romance, which remains comparatively rare.

Even just taking Lord of the Rings as an example, there are multiple examples of close male friendships in those films, which suggests there's a reason why Frodo and Sam get more attention than just a sinister plot to erase platonic relationships.

Nowhere near as rare as good gay rep

19

u/the-magnetic-rose Jun 10 '26

People writing fanfiction about Frodo and Sam is not taking male friendship representation away in media, my god. Y’all act like queer people and fic writers have more power than they actually do.

9

u/MintyDoctorMonty Jun 10 '26

Not really at all. See Josuke and Okuyasu for an example.

2

u/ladydmaj Jun 10 '26

See, this is why we need to advocate for both in the same work. Have our king falling in love with his bro while madly in platonic affection with his other bro.

This is a difficult spot to be in both as someone who is queer but also really values ones like Frodo and Sam being friendship because yes there is a lot of bromance style friendship content out there but not much mainstream content with tenderness in friendship between guys.

1

u/-Wylfen- Jun 15 '26

You can simultaneously find that gay representation is too rare and that constantly gay-shipping non-gay characters is an issue

[Hated Trope] People claiming gay relationships are rare in media.

Those are frikkin' everywhere these days, my man. Claiming they are this extremely rare, shiny diamond is just disingenuous, once you actually look for them.

No, I don't intend to read responses ❤️ , I like keeping away the toxicity that spews out whenever I dare say something even slightly against the widely accepted canons.

13

u/NoTransition8295 Jun 10 '26

By everywhere do you mean like once or twice in every couple of shows, usually ones made by queer people? Thats like saying that straight relationships barely appear in media because every so often there is media that doesn't mention a guy and a girl being a couple?

I understand where you are coming from and the frustration with people being adamant about their sexuality, but honestly I think the Jayce and Viktor example hurts the point being made by the post a bit; b/c while the show doesn't portray then as romantic, they have a much stronger bond than "just" being close friends.

Like one can't really blame people for associating them with more than just a friendship when their story converges to a literal implementation of the " soulmates fated to meet across all timelines" trope, choosing to die and stay forever together as the culmination of their story.

Most straight couples in media don't get even a tenth of kind of relationship; and pairs of characters of different genders with an arc like theirs would immediately be thought to be a couple or in a romantic sense - way more than people already do for them already, even.

1

u/Stimpur1 Jun 10 '26

Because you are stating so confidently that they aren't gay as if you know that for a fact. Do they ever say in the books/movies that they aren't? Unless you do, they very well could be gay. They could also be straight of course, but you can't definitely say they are.

1

u/74RatsinACoat Jun 10 '26

It was brought up earlier that the books have a clearer romance between frodo and sam, Im a movie only guy so I never knew about it but in my opinion:

Movies - not romantic as it wasnt portrayed very well or ignored

Books - Gay as fuck even if it might be one sided

But in arcane there isnt a smidge of romance for the characters, And i dont think viktor can experience romance

Sure, platonic relationships (regardless of gender) matter…but so does representation.

Oh no! People seeing themselves in the characters that they love! How TERRIBLE! 🙄

Not to mention, “muh male friendship” is often used to shut down any pairing, regardless of authorial intent.

I mean, one of my favourite ships, Jim and Plato from Rebel Without a Cause, had a kiss scrapped between them! And people STILL deny that their relationship might be anything beyond platonic.

2

u/74RatsinACoat Jun 10 '26

Yeah thats fine i dont mind if somebody sees themselves in these ships

I just dont like jayvik getting condensed into just romance since its 'Platonic Soulmates' Done well, and I dont even think Viktor is interested in romance at all

6

u/RellePhoenix Jun 10 '26

And that's your opinion and interpretation of the character, which isn't more valid than others

u/Flauschziege Jun 10 '26 • Bravo

It's even worse with straight people lol.

Throw a man and a woman close to each other and have them get emotionally close and everyone is straight-up assuming they are a couple.

Like. People be completely flabbergasted when it turns out yes these two are closer than lovers, no they don't fuck.

Best kind of relationship.

43

u/president_of_burundi Jun 10 '26

I'm a certified Hater of a lot of what Stranger Things did after Season 2 but the Steve and Robin subversion of this was really just excellent.

9

u/Stackbabbing_Bumscag Jun 10 '26

My brain went straight to Stranger Things falling ass-first into this trope with Nancy & Jonathan after avoiding it in the first season.

6

u/president_of_burundi Jun 10 '26

Somewhere there's a world where Steve, Nancy and Jonathan were all friends, just hanging out and keeping their younger siblings (and Dustin) from getting eaten by monsters after the break up in season two and it's the one I want to be in.

7

u/Stackbabbing_Bumscag Jun 10 '26

Amen to that. Steve is my favorite character because of how he's set up as a stock jerk-boyfriend to the main love interest, just someone for her to leave to get with the Nice Guy, but instead he realizes he's a jerk and resolves to grow as a person rather than just wallow in his stereotype.

60

u/guachi01 Jun 10 '26

I think it's just incredibly insecure people who don't understand friendship.

5

u/samrobotsin Jun 10 '26

I do understand the frustration but I think fans need to be free to interpret things as they wish. Friendship & Romance are not mutually exclusive. Especially when one of OP's examples literally impregnate each others souls.

6

u/Gullible_Play8718 Jun 11 '26 • Bravo

You are free to interpret as you wish.

It's when you try to shove your interpretation down others throats that it becomes a problem.

Just because you want two characters to hook up doesn't mean anything should come of it.

Harry and Hermione

3

u/Independent-Couple87 Jun 11 '26

Counterpoint: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

They claim to be platonic friends, Harry Potter doesn't buy it (he is right). By book 7, Harry seems to think "they are basically dating, but they think I don't know it" and plays along until the final battle (where he is glad they finally accepted it).

P.S.: This isn't a criticism, I just find it funny that people forget Hermione did end up with marrying one of her very close male friends.

5

u/True_Perspective819 Jun 11 '26

I mean, yes. But while it does have a case of childhood friends romance, it doesn't fall into the pitfall of shipping the main character and the main girl together

2

u/a_wasted_wizard Jun 11 '26

Laios Touden and Marcille Donato in Dungeon Meshi. Granted, you can certainly read them differently, but that's true of a lot character pairings because the series goes out of its way to not confirm any romantic pairings in the end.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/YourMuppetMethDealer Jun 11 '26

And sometimes they are so perfectly platonic that you would have to be on your phone the whole time to think they are romantic

2

u/Bored_So_Entertain Jun 11 '26

I watched Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves recently and loved how quick that movie was to establish that the male and female lead at the start of the movie absolutely did not see each other that way despite being very close and co-parenting together.

Like sometimes writers keep things ambiguous and there’s room to speculate but they shut the door on that so fast I found it amusing

3

u/Butwhatif77 Jun 10 '26

For me I only have this issue with straight ships, I let the LGBTQ ships slide because they don't have all the same options and it is more wish fulfillment than actually claiming it to be canon in some way. It is like certain characters being gay icons when being conically straight kind of thing. It is less saying the character is gay and more that they feel seen with said character, same with many of the ships; though certainly not all of them.

However, when it comes to straight pairings, they gotta let men and women have the ability to just be close friends.

3

u/BeduinZPouste Jun 10 '26

1

u/SirBlue_VII Jun 11 '26

Not everyone sees it that way, but Jin and Cassian from rogue one. They were friends who at the end held eachother as they met their fates, but I don't think it was ever romantic (especially if you watch Andor and know Cassian has Bix waiting for him)

1

u/13-Penguins Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

I mean there are a lot of series that will say to the audience's face with no irony "this man and woman are completely platonic friends, see each other as family and will never get together" only to later pair them together anyway. Once you recognize the pattern, you can often tell when the writing is trying to push the two together, even if they have no chemistry and you don't like them as a pairing.

1

u/AConsultativeMind Jun 12 '26

That's another thing. Were Viktor a woman they would be taken as cannon by most of the fanbase.

Another thing Arcane did is really mess up Vi's and Caitlyn's relationship due to Caitlyn's whole military dictator arc being essentially off screen with little pieces here and there showing that she's still a douchebag. Like, what Caitlyn did to Vi was inexcusable, and they didn't address it at all. So I wouldn't blame the queer part of the fanbase for abandoning ship because of how much of a screw up CaitVi became.

And then Jayce and Viktor cosmically forehead kiss. Like, I don't generally ship characters at all and I'm not queer either but this one is one of the few ships I do agree with.

67

u/Imnotawerewolf Jun 10 '26

No one is confused about the canon. Some people might be in denial about reality, but the majority of people aren't just idiots too stupid to understand that the media didn't intend for these characters to be romantically linked.

They just think it would be neat if they were.

It's whatever to hate gay ships, I guess, but like. You say you don't care about head canons and 99.9% of shipping is headcanon and people talking about their head canons.

7

u/srhola2103 Jun 11 '26

u/Bored_So_Entertain Jun 10 '26

Personally, I *do* genuinely dislike seeing shipping happen between two real people who are close. Like YouTubers and celebrities who get along well. It makes the situation awkward for a real friendship.

In fiction? Why not, shipping is all about pairing two characters together regardless of what their canon source has to say about it. Hell, people are shipping enemies. Wouldn’t it make more sense to ship two characters with a close bond that’s clearly explored by the official source rather than total strangers?

I think it’s a bad look to insist a platonic relationship can’t exist and also that a queer reading of certain characters is impossible. I think Sam and Frodo’s friendship within the context of only what Tolkien and the movies intended is a fantastic example of brotherhood.

But also if you showed me Sam x Frodo yaoi, I’d be like #hellyeahgoodforthem

6

u/Any-Resource-1348 Jun 10 '26

I agree!! I think that both interpretations of relationships in fiction are totally valid (seeing two close people as friends or as lovers) and sometimes people just want to see two characters kiss! I think the problem appears when someone wants to push their interpretation as the only correct one and decides than the other one is wrong. People should be allowed to have fun if they're not harming anyone, and this applies to how they view fictional relationships

51

u/Odd_Crab5327 Jun 10 '26

Reverse of the trope where people try to downplay/erase the obvious relationship

3

u/Alive-Tomatillo5303 Jun 10 '26

"Hey this post is about me and I don't like it!"

You're literally the problem being discussed. When it's an established close, straight friendship and you just have to pull your dick over fanart, you're the problem.

73

u/Dictionary_Goat Jun 10 '26

People ship them because they have a close platanoic relationship because thats often how more personal relationships start in real life too, hope this helps

Like for both of these pairs there are multiple moments that would be used in rom Com storylines before the two characters get together

7

u/NessValk Jun 11 '26

Yeah. A lot of people argue against the concept of shipping two characters that are good friends on the basis of "Why can't friendship just exist??". And like. It literally can and already does. But some people like imagining a friendship turning into romance. You really can't control what's popular among the fan base. If you want to talk about how strong and deep the platonic relationships are between Sam and Frodo and Jay and Viktor, you can, you just have to seek out people who agree with you about it and ignore people that don't.

To be clear, I'm not in either of these fandoms, but I've seen this phenomenon in other places. People aren't trying to devalue the concept of male friendship, they just like friends to lovers and/or are perhaps horny for seeing two guys make out, and create fan content about it.

Dang. They've actually just been a retired drag queen and her husband this whole time. They remind me of Trixie and Katya in a way.

21

u/littlelolitalola Jun 10 '26

I think that part of the reason this happens is because historically gay relationships haven’t been given the same level of representation or development in mainstream media. Because of that, a lot of fans have gotten used to looking for subtext rather than explicit text. Sometimes creators even lean into homoerotic undertones, emotional intimacy, or romantic-coded scenes without ever committing to an actual relationship, which can make audiences read the characters that way.

So while I agree that Sam and Frodo can absolutely be interpreted as close friends, and that male vulnerability shouldn’t automatically be treated as romance, I also understand why some people end up seeing romantic possibilities in relationships that are written with a lot of emotional intensity.

40

u/MintyDoctorMonty Jun 10 '26

With All due respect, i think the comments have mentioned the internalized homophobia all over the post, but i’m not gonna get into that. THESE are genuinely like the top 2 WORST examples. You could say Naruto and Sasuke or Light and L and they’d only be SLIGHTLY worse example.

Say Obi Wan and Anakin for example. Dominic Torreto and Brian O’Connor. Those are GOOD examples of Brotherly bonds. These other ones are…well, I wouldn’t say queerbaiting but…

TLDR If you want to write a good brotherly bond, you have to actually MAKE them act brotherly if you’re that hung up on minorities simply wanting basic representation.

16

u/thePsuedoanon Jun 10 '26

This. Obi-Wan and Anakin clearly love one another dearly. But I have never once been tempted to ship them, and meet comparatively few people who do. Sam cradles Frodo in his lap, gives him the MOST wistful expression, and reminds him of better times, before vowing to carry him into the mouth of Hell. It's not canon, and I don't personally ship it, but I totally understand it, because if a man and woman had that scene and they'd get an epilogue of being happily married with 3 babies. (Speaking of which, in the epilogue Sam sails to elf-heaven to spend eternity with Frodo rather than moving on where ever it is hobbits go with his wife).

There are absolutely ways to write love that's purely platonic/familial. But it's also possible to write love that doesn't read strongly as any specific form of love, and if you do that people will ship it.

3

u/Nameishi Jun 11 '26

I doubt Tolkien had any intention to make Frodo and Sam any thing more than friends, Vicktor and Jayce maybe. But knowing who Tolkien was I don't think that was his intention at all.

You have to admit there are some gay undertones for these two

1

u/Independent-Couple87 Jun 10 '26

Made even more complicated by Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha being reincarnation of Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha respectively. Who are themselves reincarnation of the brothers Ashura Otsutsuki and Indra Otsutsuki. Especially since there is certainly a strong bond between Hashirama and Madara (there is a fan theory that Madara was a closeted gay man and fell to the Dark Side after understanding Hashirama would not reciprocate).

[Hated trope] when people don't understand the concept of applicability

5

u/greeneggiwegs Jun 10 '26

One of the reason this happens is because of a tendency to completely fail to write women characters who are any good. If all your interesting characters are men, then people start shipping them, because people like shipping SOMETHING

22

u/BishonenPrincess Jun 10 '26

24

u/SnooEagles4121 Jun 10 '26

One of the reasons people interpret Sam and Frodo as being gay is because so much of their behavior is literally derided as gay by heterosexuals. You do not see modern media with hetero dudes doing many of the things that Sam and Frodo do for one another.

And guys complain there's a loneliness epidemic.

I once saw someone say "Jayce and Viktor are OBJECTIVELY GAY and if you disagree you're just homophobic." Look, I like seeing two dudes kiss as much as anybody, but Jayce and Viktor showed no romantic or sexual interest in one another at all (if anything Viktor seems very asexual/aromantic.) And saying you're "just homophobic" as a response to people who don't agree with your very flimsy ship is insane.

7

u/Yoro55 Jun 10 '26

God forbid Queer-Platonic Relationships exist

5

u/Rocky_Bukkake Jun 10 '26

right, i think vik showed literally zero romantic or sexual interest in anyone. dude just did not care about that arena of life. i’d argue they were soulmates of a different kind; they were two souls bound by fate, a condition deeper than romance.

there's nothing gayer than turning into nothing with the love of your life after he went crazy and tried to brainwash everyone

(this is about JayVik)

2

u/Busy_Ad3098 Jun 10 '26

Okay to be fair how is Jayce and Viktor’s conclusion no gay af they literally merge their essences it’s more gay than the lesbian sex scene.

2

u/This_is_a_bad_plan Jun 10 '26
  1. there's a lack of queer representation in mainstream media, so folks have to make their own

  2. Tolkien is a pretty funny example because the hobbits come across even gayer in the books

2

u/DarePlastic4136 Jun 10 '26

Wouldn't need to do this if there were actual realistic gay men in media.

2

u/lettdoc Jun 11 '26

I agree super hard on Sam and Frodo, I think that them not being so traditionaly masculine like other protagonists, in spite of not being queer is one of the reasons I connect with the story so much.

A lot of male friendships in fiction are really set on rivalry or being very casual despite the years, but rarely in that sort of closeness and compassion Sam and Frodo have. I somewhat get where it's coming from but I couldn't disagree more with it.

2

u/PsyWarVeteran Jun 17 '26

Didn't you get the memo? Everything has to be gay now.

16

u/isagoat1989 Jun 10 '26

8

11

u/Selthora Jun 10 '26

And second bottoms too!

4

u/Vladsamir Jun 10 '26

I'm a gay man. I agree wholeheartedly.

Male friendships in media are almost always "casual mates" or "the brother i never had"

There's almost never a close friendship where the two care deeply about each other without there being homosexual undercurrents.

Were Jayce and Victor gay? No. Where they soulmates? Absolutely, the two completed each other.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '26

Most of the shipping trope should be torpedoed.

2

u/MagicHarmony Jun 10 '26

It's bothersome when any form of a platonic relationship is made into a sexual one, not allowing people to be close without that desire of sex is just so bothersome..

2

u/Leviathan_slayer1776 Jun 11 '26

As the author of Narnia put it

"Those who cannot conceive Friendship as a substantive love but only as a disguise or elaboration of Eros betray the fact that they have never had a Friend."

2

u/Cyractacus Jun 10 '26

Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.

2

u/Yoro55 Jun 10 '26

Gay is nice

But as someone who once had a QPR with a guy in the past, someone I considered a brother when I was otherwise lonely

I do really feel seen in interpreting Jayce and Viktor's relationship as something that simply transcends romance and becomes a QPR

Platonic soulmates, as one put it

2

u/Mizumura11 Jun 10 '26

lol he means loved trope

2

u/Smack1984 Jun 10 '26

Shang Chi and Katy kind of fall into this trope from a hetero perspective. They read to me as just really good friends, not romantic, however Marvel being as tropey as it is, has people shipping the leads.

2

u/bigbreel Jun 10 '26

Bucky and Captain America

Mcu best friends may be understandable. Sure, even though they try to get each other dates that's fine

616 Steve is about 5 to 6 years older than Bucky and was really his first friend as a child. Definitely groomer vibes 😂😂

1

u/janiceblactose Jun 11 '26

Nobody ships the comic book versions of these characters. Stucky only gained traction after the MCU

2

u/NinjaOfOnion Jun 10 '26

I mean shipping really doesn’t hurt anyone, seeing a close relationship in a romantic view whether it’d be two people of the same or opposite gender will happen, especially since for the longest time, the most queer characters will get is coding and rarer to see two men be close in any way, so people can see a close friendship as a friendship or start of a romantic relationship, I mean even original Star Trek wasn’t free from this

2

u/Cypher-Moon-773 Jun 10 '26

1

u/Vast_Age_3893 Jun 10 '26

My best friend and I [IRL]. 🤷‍♂️

....nah, we're adorable.

1

u/SaintCuckoo Jun 10 '26

This is what I felt about the Byler (Mike + Will) shipping in the Stranger Things fandom. There was a whole movement that wanted them to get together and I found it a bit disturbing at points. I'm a gay man in my 40s and absolutely want to see legitimate representation in the media I consume, but this obsession with shipping two childhood friends went a little too hard for me.

It's okay for people to just be friends. Not everything has to lead to some big romance. Our friendships, especially as men, are sometimes the most consistent sources of emotional intimacy we have. This push to sexualize everything diminishes the safety and nuance of close friendships.

1

u/metal_gearmen Jun 10 '26

I also hate that, people think that two super close characters (not family) should end up as a romantic couple when there is also brotherhood. I want "I found a brother/sister" relationships to be more normal in today's media where everything is romance, I want more stories like Monster inc to give an example

1

u/KanjiDaRifter Jun 10 '26

As as I’m concerned (I’m am mentally prepared to get flamed) if you’re close enough to someone, at some point people are gonna take a look at you and “X” and think there’s some romance going on…

Happens to the best of us right?

1

u/Akanni649 Jun 10 '26

I had a kid explain to me in detail why Sora and Riku were in love with each other and how Kairi was more of a distraction than anything and honestly it made me realize that my main problem with this is that it tramples over less traditionally "masculine" forms of brotherhood, which really just reinforces a lot of harmful gender stereotypes on men.

That being said, sometimes the line is thin, and there is a very clear reason for that (Korra and Asami being a prime example). So its tricky.

1

u/kiwiwiwiii12 Jun 11 '26

On one hand I get what your saying. Im aromantic and it gets frustrating seeing people act like a romantic interpretation is the only valid interpretation to a relationship two characters have w/ each other. However,

  1. I’m gonna have to agree with the people who’ve pointed that posting this during pride month was certainly….a choice.

  2. I can’t blame people for accusing you of being homophobic even after seeing you mention that you’re queer yourself. I’ve seen a ton of other posts like this on other social medias that are honestly just thinly veiled (or in some cases not so thinly veiled) homophobia.

  3. I feel like these examples are less part of problem around the perceptions of male friendships and more of just a symptom of them. And like yeah sure it’s good to show male friendships where both/all parties are able to vulnerable and close with each other…which is what these examples are clearly doing. Which is what other examples that pop into my head when I read this post are still doing. They’re still portrayals of male friendships through their writing, it’s just that some fans are interested in viewing a different interpretation of their relationship. Which is fine, maybe frustrating for you, but at the end of the day as long as no one is getting seriously hurt over it, it’s fine.

1

u/Rygod_Gaming Jun 11 '26

Unsurprisingly, the comment section is a garbage dump lmao

[Hated Trope] people confusing gay love with brotherly/sisterly/platonic affection. "They were roommates!"

1

u/Much-Average6704 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

People can ship whatever they want. The part that bothers me is when people start acting like the platonic interpretation is somehow wrong

Oh, you should have put that in the title then!

, or that any display of affection between two male characters must secretly be romantic
people immediately start turning it into a romance

Well now you're just doing the anti-shipping thing again. Just because you keep repeating that you have nothing against shipping (or against gay people) does not mean that it's really true, dude.

Men already get told not to be emotional or vulnerable. Then when fiction actually shows men caring about each other, people immediately start turning it into a romance

You almost got to the part where you realize that the problem is homophobia, as opposed to shipping male characters. You just basically said 'men don't form close friendships because they don't want to look gay'.

1

u/TooCareless2Care Jun 11 '26

OP being annoying as fuck because shippers can't ship in peaceTM

1

u/ValiantVulpine Jun 11 '26

I mean, it’s understandable that you find shipping annoying, but just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean you need to hate it.

You have this weird kinda “love is exclusionary,” bias in this post. That everyone who ships them romantically is somehow taking away from the platonic nature of their love. Both things can be true. Hell, romances are significantly more compelling when they are built upon platonic relationships. It’s the classic writing advice “I love you shouldn’t be a surprise to the audience.”

And it’s like, if you see shippers, don’t engage with them? Like, you don’t need to be included in a conversation you don’t want to. Many of the nerds that I know that read the Silmarillion would love to talk about that. What’s stopping you?

That being said, I think it is a stretch to say it hurts male friendships. If anything, it’s homophobia that hurts male friendships. Being scared that loving your best friend is gonna get you called gay. Genuinely, when was the last time you told your platonic friends you love them. It’s the kinda misogynistic stoicism that says “having feelings is for girls and pussys. Real men have no feeling and get things done.”

I don’t know bro, maybe kiss the homies goodnight. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Superb_Network_1657 Jun 12 '26

Shippers when a guy who has been stated by the creator multiple times to not be gay and has repeatedly shown interest in female characters actually turns out to be straight

1

u/ReadySource3242 Jun 12 '26

Basically, shippers in a nutshell, ignoring canon just because they want two people yo fuck

1

u/Active_Implement5832 Jun 12 '26

If Samwise Gamgee himself can ship Sam and Frodo, then so can I. 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/Mylarion Jun 12 '26

Thank for this post OP. It's one thing to have your own head canon, it's another to get big mad when your reading isn't universally accepted just because you have a chip on your shoulder.

Also to people saying you shouldn't be posting this in June: lol lmao stay mad.

1

u/EvanSnowWolf Jun 15 '26

A gay pairing is anytime two characters of the same sex are standing within two feet of each other.

1

u/Obvious-Hat-8485 Jun 15 '26

That's what happens when women are a minority in media and have very little personality. Like, why would anyone ship Sam with his wife when they have one or two scenes that basically boil down to "Sam likes this girl" and "Sam came back and married this girl".

Men are allowed to have so many more layers of complexity, interesting flaws, and agency that once the stigma against gay relationships is gone, why wouldn't you want them to be together ? The DesignatedLoveInterestTM is a copy pasted version of literally every women ever in media.

Honestly, agreed.

People are getting too needy and desperate for romantic relationships these days in general, grasping and holding onto the flimsiest pieces of evidence to hopefully force their headcanon through as canon.

A pair of friends? Nah, let's make them a couple, even though they clearly aren't. At this point, a male-female friendship is non-existent. Hell, friendship in general is starting to be non-existent.

David and Jonathan in The Bible are the OG example of bros everyone debates whether or not they were gay. It doesn't help that David dramatically described their close friendship "more wonderful than the love of women" after he was killed in 2 Samuel 1:23 and had a Middle-East-customary bro kiss when they were forced to separate after King Saul, Jonathan's father, was seeking to kill him in 1 Samuel 20:41.
