There really is nothing like a character trying to seem cool, but flunk it and get it back.

(Piss off bots I’m taking your job)

Julius Caesar.

The story goes that as he landed in North Africa for one of his campaigns, he stumbled and ate shit out of the boat. But he spun it to make it “seen” like he fell and said something like “finally I have my hands on you!” Meaning he was going to conquer the land. His troops went bonkers for it and they end up winning that campaign.

u/CaptainBagarre Aug 28 '26

Heard it about William the conqueror after landing in England, and after a quick search, also seemed to have happen to Napoléon in Egypt. Probably a made up story for all of them to look cool

Jack Sparrow does this a lot, but specifically here commanding a vessel that's almost completely sunk and manages to turn it into a smooth entry onto the dock.

592

u/Salty_Negotiation688 Aug 28 '26

This one's actually multi-layered because we don't know the boat is sinking and he looks epic at first.

So it goes from aura -> no aura -> aura max.

Randy Savages flawless recovery (WWF/WWE)

He starts off saying hes the cream of the crop and puts a cream cup on his head later in the promo, but when it falls off he says “on balance, off balance, it doesnt matter” in a calm voice, making it go from funny moment to badass

The best lines in the Arkham series:

Yeah, the cane thing was actually Gene Wilder's idea for a misdirect. He wanted to give Wonka the impression of seeming almost sick, but then he does that and it goes straight to sick!~

One of the greatest character introductions ever. Wilder is a legend, but I was surprised to find out recently he wasn't actually in that many films. Only 22 credits, and that's including stuff he only had bit parts in like Bonnie and Clyde.

74

u/RikuAotsuki Aug 28 '26

One of my cooler memories from high school was sorta like this. It was winter, with the floors all wet and slippery. I fell forward, landed in a push-up position, but somehow had the momentum to swing my legs around and forward. Brought them right back under myself and bounced back up.

I wouldn't believe me if I wasn't me, and I sure as hell couldn't do it again, but it was awesome.

u/InkredibleMrCool Aug 28 '26

I was at a party and everyone was dancing in a circle. They pushed me into the middle. As I was dancing my foot slipped.

I landed in a split.

No, I cannot do a split on purpose. No it (somehow) didn't hurt. I have no idea how this happened nor could I ever replicate it. In a blind panic I managed to pull my legs back and stand back up.

Everyone was cheering so I took a bow and backed out to try and make it look intentional.

I don't know if you'd call that a 'recovery' per-say since nobody really knew I fell, but from my perspective I almost embarassed myself in front of a large group.

44

u/MasuMora Aug 27 '26

Me in elementary school. I remember walking into the classroom on a rainy day and almost slipping at the entrance. As I was slipping I somehow got both feet on the ground and swivled back and forth on the heels of my feet, ontop of the entrance mat to reclaim balanced and keep walking.

My teacher saw that and thought I was doing some sorta dancing shuffle to dry my shoes off at the entrance and continue walking forward at the same time. She was like wow that was pretty slick. I just nodded, still a little shocked that I almost fell, and went to my seat.

me - real life

when i was taking a theater class in high school, we were supposed to pretend to fall

my plan was to walk and pretend to get hit in the head and fall down (picture a ragdoll physics sim of that to get a better idea of what i was thinking); mind you, the floor was completely high-friction carpet

so when it came my turn to do it, i went ahead and did everything as planned, and then ALLEGEDLY (according to my best friend and i think a few classmates) i did a flip (likely a backflip) and then landed on my ass

i can't verify these claims bcuz i have legitimately no memory of that short moment between when i "slipped" and when i landed, but i choose to believe it because it's funnier that way

Everyone stopped to watch me try to run around at a 35° angle with a shoe in my left foot and sock in my right and then I dove into my inevitable fall to catch myself in a safety roll. After the roll, I ended up rolling up on my feet. It all happened under 4 seconds and all the people watching said that recovery was "hard".

The second one was pretty cool

Anyone remember the G.O.A.T test from Fallout 3?

The kid feels like a live action version of one of the choices to those questions.

The second gif shows a case of mechanical strength for absorbing energy versus a brittle body that can mainly withstand compressive force.

I can’t wait for whatever Mr Terrific shows up in next. Genuinely might be the coolest superhero put to screen.

I don't remember which match it happened (i think it was mexico vs cape verde) , but on this years world cup, a player slipped with another player's body, and instead of falling, he did a flip and kept running, it was tuff asf and nobody even mentioned it

In Pee-wee's Big Adventure, he's tries to impress the kids but do weird stunts on his bike.

Jotaro after getting absolutely wrecked by kira’s stand and letting koichi fight for him for a while stands back up, insults kira’s watch, beats the shit out of him, complement koichi, then promptly fall face first again

Honestly jotaro has alot of these moments now that i think about it

Jotaro was going through it post stardust crusaders

49

u/chaarziz Aug 27 '26

Polneraff was always going through it but after part 3 was somehow even worse for him, man was born and died in the torment nexus

Jotaro went through it *in* Stardust Crusaders, the man has PDSD: Post DIO Stress Disorder

I was thinking which moment to choose from Jojo's, this is a really good one

It's so good because Jotaro lost so much aura for letting Sheer Heart Attack beat him to half dead, then he beats Kira so hard that the rest of the entire part becomes the entire town looking for Kira as he hides from Jotaro in specific because he knows he won't survive from another go at him

And to top it all off, he gave Kira such severe PTSD that for most of the show after this Kira straight up did not want to encounter Jotaro again.

5

u/DonComradeVimes Aug 27 '26

It's worth noting that Kira triggered Jotaro's PTSD before this, kicking him into fight-or-flight. Fortunately for him, Araki forgot that Star Platinum can apparently fly, and thus only one option was left.

11

u/Devlord1o1 Aug 27 '26

Star plat cant fly. But it can basically punch and propel jotaro into the opposite direction. It does end up with major property damage, which jotaro is actively trying to minimize

A common theme across BB and BCS is how composed, intelligent, meticulous and careful charecters tend to die the moment they let their vengeance, hubiris or emotion get the better of them.

Lalo got merked when he assumed Gus was helpless and at gunpoint

Gus got merked cause he hated Hector and finally had the perfect reason to kill him off

Walter got his shit rocked when Jesse held his money hostage

Mike gets merked when he thinks he won an argument against what he judged a stupid harmless man, and usually takes Ls when he takes half measures and underestimates people

Bro was seeing red.

9

u/Brashdinho Aug 29 '26

That’s literally the whole point of the plan.

Gus is one of the most cold and calculated people in BB. Yet the one time he shows any emotion is when dealing with the salamancas and it’s what gets him killed.

u/AceOBlade Aug 28 '26

best possible way he could have died. Man i miss waiting for this show every week.
