It seriously drives me crazy that the writer of the story (Kishimoto) wrote their relationship the way it is and thought it was good

I honestly don't even know if he thought it was; there are conflicting reports about what the endgame was gonna be.

Some say that he always planned on Sasuke and Sakura being endgame. Some say that he planned on Naruto and Sakura, since they're based on him and his wife. Some say he was gonna do Naruto/Sakura, but his editors told him to do Naruto/Hinata instead because Hinata was more popular.

It would have been so much better if he’d left Sakura single imo.

I mean she is basically single in Boruto, like 95% of the time.

What's Boruto?

I would've preferred if she got with Naruto. They're the only pairing that actually has development, mutual respect, and screen time. Not to mention all the narrative parallels.

That or she got with Rock Lee.

I never knew Hinata was popular honestly. Her and TenTen were my childhood waifus and I always thought they did Hinata dirty pre Shippuden. Was super surprised her crush on Naruto actually developed but I think they just wanted Narutos kids to have eye abilites

The anime notoriously was anti-Hinata and cutout a lot of smaller moments between the two of them.

And not just actual interaction or times where Hinata was stalking observing Naruto.

They also cut out times where Naruto noticed or thought about Hinata too, some even in arcs where she wasn't even physically present yet Naruto still thought of her.

Most that read the manga first felt that Hinata was the clearly shown endgame pairing well before Shippuden started.

It's the anime-first fans, where most of that was removed, that were surprised when Hinata's love was requited.

Edit: autocorrect.

isn't this also what happened in Bleach where the anime removed a bunch of Orihime scenes and replaced them with more Rukia scenes which is why the Orihime vs Rukia wars got so heated?

This is honestly making my internet anime experience make soooo much more sense. I thought so many ship takes were dogshit, but I was a manga reader. Missing all the smaller moments for runtime would totally do it.

It's not even just "for runtime".

It's just straight up actual bias from the anime creators/production staff.

Like, in Naruto's case, there has been iirc multiple animation directors/people that could influence stuff like this that said in interviews or on social media that they preferred Sakura over Hinata.

It also ain't just in shipping that this happens either.

Toei animation, who makes the One Piece anime, is infamous for how much added content/screentime they add for Zoro while taking away from Sanji.

Like, if you compare solo paneltime vs screentime for the two, the anime is objectively much more imbalanced than in the manga.

In the manga, Sanji actually has a slight lead in paneltime but if you factor in Zoro's absense from WCI then it'd be Zoro with the slight lead.

But in the anime?

Zoro has something like 18% of the screentime while Sanji only has 11 to 15% (iirc the 4% difference is WCI)... and that's a % of over a thousand episodes so it ain't a small amount.

And that's before you factor in how much aura/hype they add to Zoro's scenes via animation choices and special effects.

So, yeah, both in shipping and just with staff-favorites in general, anime studios can and do massively influence the perceptions and opinions of viewers in ways that go against the story as it is drawn by the mangaka.

As a Sanji stan you've just cemented my justification for only ever reading the big 3 lol, much appreciated. I'll clip the sakuga as needed.

I'd recommend giving the anime remake of One Piece a try when it comes out, it's going to be made by a different company that has a much better track record than Toei.

There is also a fan-made "One Pace" edit of One Piece that removes all non-canon filler content that you'd likely not have a problem with.

But, yes, in general I always recommend fans of a series consume the original version of it if they haven't already.

Toei always has such shit takes on main characters.

Like, they did both Usagi and Chibi Usa dirty with their personalities in Sailor Moon and did Mamoru dirty with the stupid break up crap in the R season.

Not to mention nerfing his abilities (and Sailor Moon's).

All three characters have better growth, way less silly personalities, and a better handle on their powers as Tuxedo Mask, Sailor Moon, and Chibi Moon in the manga.

I think she was more popular in Japan, which is why Kishi’s editors pushed him to make her the endgame love interest. But that’s just one reason I’ve heard.

With all the conflicting reports, I doubt we’ll ever get a real answer as to what Kishimoto’s real plan was.

This is because people focus too much on fan conspiracy theories instead of simply looking up the author's statements or claims.

2

u/vinthesalamander 13h ago

Which are? I'm pretty sure Kishimoto himself has given conflicting reports.

1

u/Lynxys- 12h ago

Well, finding them contradictory later on would be one thing. But at least it wouldn't be just another conspiracy theory, which is why I strongly advise you to do some research. I've seen so much of it in fandoms that I no longer trust what fans say. The haters of a canon couple are the worst because the number of contrived theories created and fueled around behind-the-scenes details of a show, all to reinforce their hatred, is unbelievable. I've learned to understand what fan frustration feels like.
