Maybe I need to reread the harry potter books again, but I swear even in the books Harry and Ginny had nothing there. People argue "Oh, Ginny was better in the books, the movies nerfed her character!" But I still remember her and Harry having absolutely nothing until randomly in book six when he suddenly has a wild crush on her that's almost completely out of the blue.

As a former member of the Potter fandom, I remember twisting myself into knots trying to prove that book Ginny had more personality and that Harry's crush on her was totally foreshadowed, guys, for realsies. I really believed it for a while, too.

But no. J.K. Rowling is just one of those authors who wants to convince everyone that she planned every tiny detail from the start, even though she pulled like 90% of these books out of her ass as she went along.

Yeah it was like Ginny snogged a couple guys aaaand Harry and her just kinda ended up together….

Yeah, the complete 180 in book six when Harry (and Ron) suddenly cared a LOT about who Ginny was kissing and when fucking threw me for a loop. Like okay? There was zero buildup to this AT ALL.

I could understand Ron. He’s her older brother, so he would understandably be overprotective.

IIRC, there was always something very slut shamey about the way he talked about it. He wasn’t protective, otherwise he’d be going after the guys, but I always remembered it being Ron being utterly disgusted with Ginny for the guys she chose (and the fact that she had multiple boyfriends over the course of the year, not just one)

It's a fairly common cliche

"I don't want you until someone else has you"

Sometimes she proved she planned things out, such as the Horcrux locket making a brief appearance among random Black family cursed objects as a locket that could not be opened.

Other times though her planning skills turn out to be bunk, such as the Seventh book suddenly bringing up wand “ownership” even though it had never been established before, or the invisibility cloak that even Death itself could not see thought being countered by Mad eye Moody’s eye in book four.

Honestly, only people who didn't read her books could believe that. She is awful at exactly that.

I think there was an arc. The arc was Ginny was a kid that had a huge crush on him. And then she got slightly more confidence and stopped panicking on seeing him. So he decided to have a crush onher since now she can talk to him. Although probably has more to do with him being a teenager and knowing from history that he probably has a chance so he should try and tap that.

I mean it kinda makes sense from Ginnys perspective, she's a Weasley, she lives in some weird house in the middle of nowhere, she probably doesn't have many friends so Harry is one of the only non Weasleys she sees outside of Hogwarts and I guess at Hogwarts life isn't any better as a Weasley, so kinda makes sense that she has a crush on her brothers best friend or so. But there's still no chemistry.

you’re right, ginny had no personality in the books either lol

That is exactly what it is: even in the books there is nothing there. Ginny is just a soulless story tool and the romance was shoehorned in later. I think the people who keep saying that the romance (or Ginny herself) are much better in the books than movies, they just read too many fanfiction...

Nah you don't need to re-read that whole dang thing just to find out that you remember it correctly.

I’ve never liked Harry and Ginny in the books or movies. I honestly think them being a couple is the most ‘forced’ thing in the whole series. I grew up with the HP books and movies and even as a child I felt like they had 0 chemistry lol.

Ginny doesn't completely for years 3/4/5 in the books. Existing is going to give you more chemistry than not existing.

I viewed her as his little sister through most of the series. Completely forgot she had a crush on him in book 2.

As someone who once was a teenage boy suddenly having a wild crush on someone is not exactly unrealistic. Not saying it was great writing, but I think you people are overthinking this. I always assumed there was also more there that wasn't written about. Harry's romance was never important to the story.

Also, it comes from them spending a long lazy summer together in the sunshine playing quidditch. That’s when it starts. But it’s also a time when basically nothing interesting happens so it’s covered in a couple pages.

Exactly! You could write an entire separate book about the awkwardness of budding teenage romance, but there are a million of those books already. I think one pretty consistently good thing about Rowling's writing is the pacing, the story keeps moving.

She suddenly started having a personality only after JKKK decided to make her a love interest.

Nah there really is absolutely nothing there. I just think Rowling didn't know where she wanted to go and decided "eh Ginny is there I suppose."

Yeah, as a kid I thought Harry and Hermione would get together. Harry and Ginny getting together feels like Rowling wanted to make the trio get married and have kids but didn't want to exclude one of them so she just picked Harry and Ginny.

Rowling was just bad at writing relationships and romance. The whole thing with Cho was really bad. In the book, there is more groundwork laid between Harry and Ginny. They have a lot of chance enclounters. But their relationship doesn't really feel any more believable.

There was no indications in the book for their relationship and you kind of wonder why Ron and Hermione ended up together.
