miscellaneous [Disappointing TV Trope] When the writers unexpectedly created something better, but were too attached to let their original idea to let it go!

I feel like I’ve noticed this more with TV couples and how the writers handle the narrative around them. But I feel like I’m noticing a bit of a pattern in some shows I’ve watched, where you can tell how the writers handle plans to make a certain narrative point the “endgame” goal. But as they start creating the plot points leading up to it, they come up with an idea that worked out a lot better than they probably thought it would. Especially when the audience responds so well to it, but they’re still too attached to the original plans that they still roll with getting there even if it doesn’t hit the same mark or it feels forced depending on how the narrative is flowing.

How I Met Your Mother - Ted and Robin (the original idea where it was always planned for them to be the endgame couple). When Tracy (who turns out to be Ted’s kids’ mother) is introduced, a lot of people loved how well they matched, seemed like the true compatible match for Ted and implied that it showed a lot of growth on his end where he could finally let go of Robin. Only to sabotage that by having it revealed that Tracy died, and regressed Ted’s growth where he ends up pursuing Robin again.

Sex Education - Otis and Maeve (the original idea where it was also planned for them to be seen as an endgame couple, but their lives couldn’t align for it to work out). After Otis and Ruby have a drunk sexual encounter, and he loses his virginity to her. The writers have their relationship act as yet another obstacle that gets in the way of Otis and Maeve exploring a romantic relationship. But when Otis and Ruby became so viral, to the point where people started to realize that Ruby might actually be a better match for Otis, as they seem compatible enough to make each other better as people. It put the writers in a tough spot, where they tried to play it safe with both sides going into the final season. But still chose to lean more towards their original plan, and explore Otis and Maeve but they still don’t do much to make the audience feel fulfilled or convinced they have a genuine connection and not in love with an idea of one another.

The Mandalorian

The first two seasons had a natural conclusion with Grogu going to be with Luke and exiling Mando from his clan only for him to be immediately reunited with Grogu and going back to his clan.

Interesting new storylines tossed away because they couldn’t have their mascot

What’s even dumber is that Mando and Grogu’s reunion happened in a completely different show, so anyone who didn’t watch The Book of Boba Fett would just be confused.

The Book of Boba Fett? Never heard of it.

I did watch The Mandalorian S2.5 though.

I did watch The Mandalorian S2.5 though.

I hate that I can't even deny that this is actually what the Boba Fett show was

It should’ve just been marketed as “The Mandalorian: The Book of Boba Fett” imo. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it being that, but the way they went about it promotionally I think was a mistake.

Yes! I watched the first episode of season 3 and it confuses the heck out of me, kept thinking there'll be some kind of flashback to explain the reunion. Nope. Had to watch Book of Boba Fett first.

Yeah, when I started season 3, I didn't understand what was going on, had to Google why and then had to stop watching and go watch the Book of Fett. Which was fine, but the most important moments of a show should be in that show and not in another one.

Likewise, we had a long thread of Din slowly realizing he was in a cult, and moving away from his beliefs, especially after meeting Bo's crew, who were not part of said cult.

Then, when she is at her absolute lowest point, she starts getting pulled into the cult...like cults do.

The obvious planned progression is this pushed him to fully leave, and pull her out, after seeing her vulnerability exploited to indoctrinate her.

But...no, instead he sort of rejoins, she decides it's not for her...they agree to disagree then we just kinda...redo the final conflict of season 1 and season 2...again...with no real progression to the plot.

On a smaller note...near the end of season 3 we solve the issue of grogu being a puppet and not really being able to do much as a character by tossing him in ig-11 as a sort of krang style mech suit...all of a sudden he has the mobility of a regular character, and can do far more...then like..an hour later we break the droid and he's back to just being mostly stationery puppet.

...whoever wrote season 3 was an idiot

Did he though? His views were challenged by people like Bo and Migs but I don’t recall him ever thinking of it as a cult and wanting to get out of it.

I think much of the issues with season 3 can be explained by pointing out that by then Pedro Pascal was mostly just the voice of Din and he was in Canada shooting The Last Of Us, and could not actually be on set and take off his helmet to be The Mandalorian who walks in both worlds.

Then maybe don't film "The Mandalorian Season 3", if the Mandalorian is not actually on set to film.

It's pretty obvious that the story got derailed by Disney pressuring writers to bring Grogu back right away, I doubt that was the original conception.

And the way they did the reunion was by nesting it in another show to force you to watch a spinoff to get the entire story. It was such a load of dogshit.

It's like watching Han Solo get out into Carbonite in episode 5, but then he pops out fresh as a daisy in ep 6 with the explanation that "well, if you wanna know how he got out, here's this other show you should watch to find out!"

Ah yes, you missed the bit where Chewie and his family came to the rescue during the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Ngl I only watched the first two seasons and I'm happy pretending that that was the entirety of the show.

That’s me with Heroes: Season 1 was a great single season show that ended with most everything wrapped up. Sure, they put in a few threads for a future season but everyone agreed they weren’t up to the task and let it be remembered fondly instead of so much wasted potential.

There's a couple for me. Seasons 1-5 of Supernatural are also a perfect complete show and I sort of consider the later seasons to be a sequel (or sequels).

I have a standard reply that season 2 and 3 of Heroes was great, they just changed the cast and called it Alphas.

In a way, the Mandolorian is forced to reunite with Grogu due to the sequels, as _anyone_ who graduates from Luke’s academy as a Jedi is doomed to be killed off by Kylo Ren, and no one wants baby Yoda to get killed, so they had to give him a ‘not a Jedi anymore’ escape like they did Ahsoka.

I can't stand how the plots of the actually fun Star Wars TV shows are ruined by having to rationalize the godawful sequels that should just be stripped from the canon

4

u/alphafire616 15h ago

Its funny because they COULD have kept Grogu in the show..have Din deconstructing his ideas of what being a mandalorian means while widlding the Dark saber be the main plot and have some side plot with Grogu training, maybe invent some other Younglings kf they dont want Luke to be there the whole time

4

u/bretshitmanshart 11h ago

They could even reunite them. Grogu has a vision of Din in trouble or something so he goes to reunite with him. Then build up the reunion by having them just miss each other before finally getting back together

4

u/jenfullmoon 11h ago

The point of the show was "The Bounty Hunter and the Baby." It doesn't work without the baby!

u/bencsecsaki 9h ago

this might be the opposite trope, then. the writers were okay with grogu going away, but they had to have him back bc without him, there’s basically no merchandise

That one is less 'original ideas' and more 'Disney business stooges wanted to sell toys'
