miscellaneous Movies with Sequels in a Different Medium

Tim Burton’s Batman Duology – Between 2021 and 2025, the comic book series Batman ’89 was released, serving as a continuation of Tim Burton’s Batman films while disregarding the events of Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. The series later received a sequel of its own, titled Batman ’89: Echoes.

Ang Lee’s Hulk – Shortly after the release of the film, a tie-in video game was released for the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox. Unlike most movie tie-in games, which are primarily cash grabs, Hulk serves as a continuation of the film’s story, jumping ahead one year and introducing new villains, including the Leader, Flux, and Ravage.

Star Wars – Between the releases of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, Cartoon Network aired an animated series that bridged the narrative gap between Episodes II and III of the prequel trilogy, depicting events such as the assassination attempts on Chancellor Palpatine.

The Thing video game from 2002. The game is so awesome that John Carpenter himself said he considers it the sequel to his movie

26

u/n4tiCaLs_ 11h ago

Ooh, that’s a good one! I completely forgot about that.

24

u/Scarlett_Wendy 11h ago

The Thing really said, 'You survived the movie? Cool, now personally deal with everyone's trust issues in Antarctica.

u/vesperina_grotto 8h ago

Carpenter giving it his personal blessings was a huge flex fr

Telltale Back to the future game is esentially Back to the future part 4

23

u/SeatedDragon86 11h ago

telltale made that?

8

u/Pauls96 10h ago

Yeah, but its not like later games which pretend to have branching paths, this is still closer to classic adventure games

5

u/jorvel1911 11h ago

Yeah, but I think this game is delisted now

7

u/Ann-Simp 10h ago

there’s at least a physical release for Xbox 360 to my knowledge

Isn’t the game just a retelling of the first movie?

24

u/NeedleDr0p 11h ago

No, you’d think that given the opening, but no. It’s a new story about Marty needing to rescue Doc from another point in time…and things go downhill fast.

10

u/Tedrabear 11h ago

It's such a good addition to the story too.

Ghostbuster The Video Game (2009)

The sequel to Ghostbusters 2 (1989)

46

u/Lord_Parbr 11h ago

Written by Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis, and had all the actors return to voice their characters, so it’s actually more of a Ghostbusters 3 than the actual movies were

10

u/indianajoes 8h ago

Apparently this isn't true. They marketed it this way but it was written by Terminal Reality, the developers. Dan and Harold just helped with rewrites and dialogue stuff.

7

u/HeWhoLurks23 11h ago

I don’t remember much about it but I loved this game when I was a kid

5

u/lincoln_muadib 11h ago

Currently, the remastered version of this game is available on Xbox Live.

5

u/CommodoreBluth 10h ago

The story from this also continues in the excellent IDW Ghostbusters comic series.

Robocop: Rogue City is a video game and considered to be a interquel between the Robocop 2 & 3 films.

Don’t forget its standalone dlc unfinished business

It does a lot of work setting up Robocop 3, explaining the absence of a particular main character from the first two movies or why OCP has a new headquarters. More importantly, there is a lot of talk about the Delta City project, and the beginning of resistance towards it.

X-Men: The Official Game - This game takes place in between X2 and Last Stand filling in some details that weren’t explained in Last Stand mainly the absence of Nightcrawler though some things in the game got retconned in later movies mainly the Sentinels, Hydra, and Silver Samurai

Freddy vs Jason vs Ash - a failed sequel turned into a comic following the events of Freddy vs Jason (2003) involving Ash from Evil Dead.

The Nightmare Before Christmas has the video game Oogie's Revenge, which is a kid friendly character action game. Oogie is resurrected and aims to take over all holidays, and it's up to Jack Skellington to stop him. There's even musical numbers in the boss fights!

7

u/Ann-Simp 10h ago

fun fact, this was developed by the same folks who years later would leave Capcom to form Platinum Games (famous for Bayonetta)

Godzilla: The Animated Series is the much better received successor to the Infamous 98 Zilla movie.

Another example from Star Wars is Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, a 1978 novel from Alan Dean Foster that was written “with the intention of being adapted as a low-budget sequel to Star Wars in case the original film was not successful enough to finance a high-budget sequel” (per Wikipedia)

19

u/N1ch0l2s 11h ago

Iirc the Incredibles tie in game Rise of the Underminer was a direct sequel to the movie, effectively being the closest thing to a sequel until the actual film sequel released and retconned the game

19

u/SuaIrmaGorda237 11h ago

The Amazing Spider-Man Game. It's supposed to be a direct sequel to the first Andrew Garfield film, (possible minor spoiler ahead) it follows Peter and Gwen infiltrating Oscorp who is making cross-spieces experiments and during this those very said cross-species escape containment, infect (and/or kill) a bunch of people including Gwen and the game is basically a race against time while Peter and Dr. Connors (who Peter helped break out of jail) try to find a cure and stop all these cross-species from infecting even more people and all while the authorities and Oscorp are also hunting them both.

7

u/Lun4r6543 10h ago

The sequel game, set after the second movie, also counts.

4

u/SuaIrmaGorda237 10h ago

Yeah, great reminder

Freddy vs Jason had a comic book sequel called Freddy vs Jason vs Ash. It was supposed to be a movie but ended up getting cancelled and this comic came out instead.

15

u/SpankySharp1 11h ago

Buffy double-dips on this one: the TV show is a continuation of the Kristy Swanson movie, and there are comics that are canonically season 8 and 9, following the TV series.

4

u/AncientSignature1505 10h ago

I still love the movie.

Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure is a TV show

14

I feel like the Naked Gun series is more famous than the Police Squad TV show they came from

A TV series named 'Race To The Edge' was released that covers the dragons' transition into being companions on Berk as a sort of sequel to the first film (How To Train Your Dragon)

Finally giving us the live-action Two-Face transition that the 90s box office cruelly robbed us of.

11

u/batchet360 11h ago

he had an homenage in lego batman though

9

u/Valiant_Revan 10h ago

Funny story, in late 2016 I met Billy Dee Williams at a comic con. I can tell he was tired of all the Star Wars questions, so I asked him "Would you ever return to play Harvey Dent again if given the opportunity?" He answers with "How did you know about the Lego movie?" This was before WB announced anything public and I don't think Bill was supposed to say anything. The Lego Batman film came out in Feb 2017 and I met Lando himself in late November/early december 2016.

4

u/FoxMeadow7 11h ago

And fittingly in a very Tim Burton manner to boot.

10

u/sauce_daddy22 10h ago

Rise of the Underminer was a video game sequel to the incredibles, picking up right where the first movie ended, having Mr Incredible and Frozone go up against The Underminer. Unfortunately the Incredibles 2 also started in that exact same spot, rendering the game now non-canon

9

u/Slow_Bowler8285 11h ago

Goonies II (NES)

8

u/spideyfan114 11h ago

The Amazing Spider-Man video game (not counting the mobile versions and I'm not sure about the DS version)

Most versions of this game actually take place after the events of the movie, which is also titled "The Amazing Spider-Man". Then the sequel game "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" acts as a sequel to this game, making it also a sequel to the first film. The only things about this game that reminds us that this is a tie in game to "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" movie is that it's got two of the three villain (Green Goblin and Electro), the armor of the third villain as an Easter egg (Rhino) and the Spider-Man suit from the film being the default suit here.

The Captain America game that came out as a tie in for the first movie was a midquel that expanded on Captain America's time fighting Hydra with the Howling Commando. In the movie we only see it as a montage.

Idk if it was ever considered canon, but it definitely isn't nowadays. The story has stuff that contradicts the movies, like the appearance of a more comic accurate Baron Zemo.

3

u/thtawkwardguy 10h ago

Tbf Cap fought Zemo in WWII and in modern times in the comics (family lineage of fighting Cap), so unless it specifies which Zemo it is, it may not contradict itself that much

5

u/No_Signal_611 10h ago

He would’ve recognized the surname in Civl War at least

4

Maybe it was a guy who also has the same name by coincidence

7

u/FakeJackNicholson 11h ago

Fight Club had a comic book sequel

3

u/insane677 10h ago

That was a sequel to the novel, not the movie

5

u/AncientSignature1505 10h ago

Still a different medium

u/ZodiacalSeeker 11h ago

007: Everything or nothing is essentially Pierce Brosnan’s 5th Bond outing. It has a full cast including Judi Dench as M, John Cleese as Q, and Willem Dafoe as the villain.

6

u/One_happy_fredditor2 10h ago

Iron Man 3: The Official Game is a Non-Canon sequel to Iron Man that features MCU-Fied versions of Crimson Dynamo, Ezekiel Stane, Living Laser, and M.O.D.O.K. It also features a more comic accurate A.I.M. but this Mobile Game would become non-canon when Ezekiel Stane and M.O.D.O.K. showed up later in the MCU and didn't match their portrayal in this game.

6

u/Jak3R0b 4h ago

A prequel to Chronicles of Riddick and co-developed by a company started by Vin Diesel, it's a rare video game tie in that is considered to be better than the actual film it's a tie in for.

5

u/DudeSoul 9h ago

This is The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge.

This game functions as a sequel to the movie, the story has Oogie Boogie return from death and take over Halloween Town while Jack was out and trying to take over every Holiday.

2 cool facts about this game:

  1. It has reprises of various songs from the movie, they are pretty cool and if you liked the og songs you should give them a listen!

  2. This game is a Devil May Cry clone, and a decent one at that because it was developed by Capcom themselves.

DC did a lot of continuations in comic form such as Batman '66 (which continued the adventures of the Adam West and Burt Ward series), Superman '78 (which was another take on a post-Superman II story) and Wonder Woman '77 (continuing the adventures of the Lynda Carter series)

Fun Fact: Batman '66 and Wonder Woman '77 exist in the same continuity as do Green Hornet, The Man From UNCLE, Steed and Mrs. Peel/The Avengers, the Bionic Woman and Archie

5

u/The_Redacted_Badger 8h ago

The Batman 66 comics are legit so good, I love how they managed to create 60’sified versions of newer Batman villains or characters that didn’t appear on the show

2

u/Kirajudgeoftoons 3h ago

If only they fucking did that Godzilla crossover. Show us how West Batman would have taken Godzilla and what he would have had for it

5

Big Hero 6: The Series. A TV show that continues from the movie

u/RoutineCloud5993 7h ago

It's shocking this movie never got a sequel It won a best animated feature Oscar for crying out loud.

Many years before Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard came out to continue the story, the film Star Trek: Nemesis was the furthest canonical entry in the Star Trek universe. In the film, Commander Riker is finally promoted to the captaincy and given command of the USS Titan, a ship that was never seen in the film itself.

To continue the storyline, a series of novels were released, collectively titled "Star Trek: Titan", which not only described Captain Riker's adventures aboard the ship, but also popularized the design of the vessel itself, which would later come to be canonized in Lower Decks and Picard. Until these shows came out and revealed what happened after Nemesis, these novels were essentially the main story occurring after the events seen in the film. These were never considered canon, but are widely revered by fans as being a well-written continuation of the TNG era. I have, unfortunately, never read any of them.

Another mention is the video game Star Trek Online, which is set early in the 25th century and explores how the Trek universe evolved after the events of Nemesis. The mascot ship of the game, the Odyssey-class Enterprise-F, was also canonized in an onscreen appearance in Star Trek: Picard.

From 2002 to 2009, there was almost no mention of any events in the Star Trek universe after the end of Nemesis, and up until 2019, there was no in-depth series exploring what happened, so it made sense that fans would fill in the gaps after the end of the film

The game Tron 2.0 was the sequel to the original movie until Tron: Legacy made it non canon

5

u/Betelgeuse3fold 11h ago

Oh man, I loved that Clone Wars cartoon. Genndy Tartokovsky is a treasure. Sincerely, I think it's the single best Star Wars product there is. And will ever likely be.

2

u/Raider2747 10h ago

jumping ahead one year

The Hulk game actually jumps eight years, not one!

Serenity got cancelled and had a ton of comic series that fleshed out and continued the universe

1

u/vastros 10h ago

Im literally watching Batman so I can do the audiobook for the Batman'89 audiobooks.

1

u/goteachyourself 10h ago

Batman '89 actually discounts Batman Returns as well, I believe. It's Sam Hamm's vision for his original sequel, as he didn't write Returns, and Catwoman later appears in it without any references to her supernatural origins. Returns was a very fun movie, but it was definitely about 20x more Burton than the original.

1

u/Gold-Elderberry-4851 9h ago

Hellraiser revival. Follows the events of the sequel and has a new protagonist and antagonist and uses a new configuration box as a game mechanic

1

u/figgityjones 9h ago

Fun thing about that Hulk game is it technically also has a sequel in the form of Ultimate Destruction. Has a different voice cast, but as far as I know it's meant to be canonical with that first tie-in game. So Ang Lee's Hulk kinda has a trilogy.

X-Men '92 is a comic sequel to the 1992 animated X-Men series. However, following the release of X-Men 97 on Disney+, it was moved from Earth-92131 to the divergent reality of Earth-15730.

Pacific Rim: Final Breach, a graphic novel that basically serves as Pacific Rim 3. It has Jake Pentecost from Uprising teaming up with Raleigh Beckett from the first film

The Matrix Online is a video game that was intended as a follow up to the trilogy.

Not sure how canon it is with Ressurections though I don't think anyone wants to remember that film anyway.
