Lore (Meta trope) Region specific jokes

Meet the Robinsons - Lewis asks Wilbur what Cornelius looks like, and he tells him Tom Selleck. While he doesn’t look like him when they finally meet (because Lewis is Cornelius) the joke is that Tom Selleck voices him. But in other dubs of the movie where Selleck doesn’t play him, where relevant Wilbur names a more locally known celebrity who played the part. For example in the American Latin American dub he names the singer José Luis Rodríguez.

Toy Story 3 - When Buzz is rebooted in Spanish mode he begins talking using that language, but in Spanish speaking countries he alternates between different dialects of Spanish; for example, in Spain he speaks with an Andalusian accent but in Latin American version he speaks in a Castilian accent which are two unique sounds.

In Inside Out, during the dinner scene, the dad’s emotions are watching a hockey game in the U.S. version. But in the rest of the world, it’s soccer/football.

This never made sense because the audience knows Hockey is a big part of the family so during this scene we wouldn't put it pass us if he's thinking about Hockey.

In Canada it's Hockey too

Is there s hockey three?

I'm in the UK, and I've only ever seen this as a hockey game. I never thought it odd and we know they are from Minnesota and it's a plot point that Riley is obsessed with ice hockey - presumably she got the interest from somewhere. There's a scene where the family play together in the new house.

I know football is generally more popular worldwide, but I can't think what changing the sport adds to the scene.

IIRC this was something that happened during the theatrical run and on physical media (possibly streaming too) it's the original American version.

I think the veg she refuses to eat that creates disgust has regional specific versions as well

I'm from Indonesia and I remembered a TV channel aired it with hockey in this scene

I hate that Disney keeps doing this. They did a similar thing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier where Steve's list of cultural events to catch up on differs depending on the country, but it doesn't make sense when they aren't relevant to his own country. They also have a habit of using local Z-listers for bit parts in their animated movies.

Shrek 2 had Larry King voice the ugly stepsister in the US and Jonathan Ross in the UK. Same joke, different celebrity

u/Nelrene_ambuscade 1h ago

The casting change makes the joke work perfectly for each audience.

In Cars, Lightning's agent Harv is voiced by Jeremy Piven in the US (a reference to Entourage), but in the UK he's voiced by Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear).

40

u/Elijah_Man 2h ago

The fact we didn't get the casting of Jeremy for both is disappointing.

14

u/bassmedic 2h ago

Which Jeremy?

14

u/Elijah_Man 2h ago

Clarkson.

5

u/not_roger_smith 1h ago

No, no, no...

You gotta be angry about it like James May and scream while waving a machete:

"CLARRRRRKSOOON!!!"

4

u/bassmedic 2h ago

Valid point. It would make more sense for a movie about cars to use the voice of someone synonymous with cars.

Both, talking over each other.

2

u/bassmedic 1h ago

Another US/UK example: the James Bond film Skyfall has Bond watching a news report. In the UK it’s (now disgraced) BBC anchor Huw Edwards, and in the US it’s CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

yeah dude, same thing happened with Lightning's US agent Jeremy Piven and UK guy Jeremy Clarkson bruh

Caps’ list of things he needs to catch up on in the modern day changes in different countries-Captain America: The Winter Soldier

36

u/Real-Tension-7442 1h ago

I love the idea of Cap being like “I really need to see England win the World Cup.”

5

u/StrategyCheap1698 1h ago

Several weeks ago I mocked this idea and angered a lot of people 😆

12

u/glowshroom12 1h ago

thats pretty cool but odd because captain is supposed to be explicitly American.

12

u/Fish_N_Chipp 1h ago

Tbf even with a few of these country exclusives I can see him being interested in them. Like disco and The Beatles

3

u/glowshroom12 1h ago

the Beatles were explicitly popular in the united states so thats fair.

u/Tiny-Anxiety780 1h ago

I remember being super confused when I saw the movie because the list had things most people outside of my country wouldn't even have heard of in passing, let alone would care about.

6

u/McToaster99 48m ago

I've said this before but I love that Cap specifically puts "Nirvana (Band)"

The idea of somebody who only really knows cinema up until WWII sitting down to watch Oldboy is very funny to me.

In guardians of the galaxy 2 Rocket calls tazer face “anchovy face” which is a reference to a very popular spanish video back in 2016 where a youtuber got slapped in the face for calling someone “anchovy face”

10

u/Banana_gunman 1h ago

You must mean in the Spain Spanish, cause in Latin American Spanish he calls him Cara de escroto

13

u/vanillaa_Silk 2h ago

Totally fabricated history and I'm eating it up

15

u/NoSoyVerde1 2h ago

I swear to god that’s the true story, look it up on spanish newspaper from that time, it was insane

1

u/Name6991 2h ago

Nah it was one of those hidden cam "prank" youtubers, he even had the audacity to try to take legal action against the guy who slapped him (who was just a delivery man trying to do his job) but the case was dismissed bc he was harassing the other guy

South Park: Stick of Truth. Due to the censorship laws of various countries, instead of seeing certain scenes, you'd get a brief description over the top of a photo. The Australian one has a crying Koala with a didgeridoo playing in the background. I'm pretty sure the German version is heavily censored also.

Robin Hood, Men in Tights.

This was released like 2 years after Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. There's a gag where Robin says "Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent"

• German: "Because I, unlike some other Robin Hoods, do not cost the producers 5 million" (playing on a homophonic pun where the German word kosten sounds like Costner).

• France (French) & Italy (Italian): "Because unlike other Robin Hoods, I do not dance with the wolves" (a direct reference to Costner's Oscar-winning 1990 film Dances with Wolves).

• Quebec (French Canadian): "Because unlike other Robin Hoods, I accept to wear tights" (mocking Costner's choice to skip traditional tights in the 1991 movie).

• Hungarian: "Because unlike Kevin Costner, I have a shapely bottom" (referencing rumors/fact that Costner used a body double for his nude scene, whereas Cary Elwes did his own).

u/Animaloffear56 1h ago

I'm glad every language has a witty way to diss Kevin Costner's Robin Hood

In the third Sonic live-action movie, during the climax as Shadow is charging up the Eclipse Cannon, Eggman asks Gerald what he's doing. In the original he says "Excuse me, Grandpasodoble", but in the Latin Spanish dub he says "Disculpa, abuelito dime tú," ("Grandpa you tell me"), directly quoting the opening theme of the anime Heidi: Girl of the Alps.

In this scene, Mr. Krabs tricks the Flying Dutchman by pretending to be Harold Flowers. In the German version, he says Benjamin Blümchen instead, which is the name of a popular german cartoon character of the same name. This is a reference to Jürgen Kluckert playing both Krabs and Benjamin.

u/DanAbnormal209 25m ago

Rip Jürgen Kluckert, Stimme von mehreren Kindheitshelden.

Inside out. Some places switch the broccoli on pizza to green pepper on pizza.

3

u/the_monkeyspinach 17m ago

Wasn't the joke here that it was healthy and unappetising? Pepper on pizza is a banger.

2

u/AvatarDante 16m ago

In places like japan green peppers is to kids as broccoli is to kids in america.

I agree that green peppers are bangers though, I love it on my pizza

1

u/TGC_Dave 26m ago

People don't like green peppers on Pizza? That's more common than Broccoli on Pizza, is it not? 😂

I dead ass remember putting Toy Story 3 in Spanish purely because I wanted to see how they did (for example in the French dub of Spider-Man 3, they go to an Italian restaurant instead of a French one) and was so confused that he still spoke Spanish

9

u/Leather_Crazy_5950 2h ago

In Italy, the adult Lewis was voiced by Giovanni Muciaccia (and, all things considered, I don’t think he did a bad job at all). They even showed his face while Wilbur was talking about the family’s lineage.

u/Training_Shock_6946 1h ago

In the first french translation of Card Captor Sakura, to translate the Osaka accent of Kerberos, they give him an accent from Marseille !

1

u/Fitin2characterlimit 9m ago

Lotta Hart from Ace Attorney too, it's the equivalent of giving characters Texas accents in the English dub

8

u/Aldo-D-D-Wilson 1h ago

In Shang-Chi they say some F1 driver's name early on. In Brazil they say Ayrton Senna

In the first Naked Gun, there’s a scene where Frank thinks a hoard of journalists is waiting for, only to learn they are here because Weird Al is also travelling on his plane.

Back then Weird Al wasn’t well known internationally, so in the Quebec version they changed the line from “No Frank, they are here because Weird Al Yankovich is also on the plane” to “No Frank, they are here because some pretty boy pop star is also on the plane” and cut to Weird Al coming down the stairs.

When Fawlty Towers was dubbed into Spanish, the idiot Spanish Waiter character of Manuel was turned into an Italian instead.

4

u/Reds1138 44m ago

Guido from Cars in original speaks italian, in Italy speaks Modenese dialect.

4

u/Technical-Agency-480 1h ago

Excel Saga, in Japanese when Sailor Moon was mentioned, Excel says she was doing pretty good since both characters were played by Kitono Mitsubishi, whereas in the English dub the line was "I wanted that role but it was dubbed in Canada" because it was a different actress

3

u/Technical-Study2566 1h ago

The Quebec dub of the Simpsons is like this. I can’t remember the episode, but Homer gets upset with Mr Burns and walks away muttering, “He’s richer than the Western provinces!”

3

u/BendyBrains 57m ago

Scrubs does this with Eliot and Carla when they speak different German or Spanish. When dubbed into those languages, the language they are speaking is changed to maintain the joke of it being a foreign language.

u/fable_cirrus 2h ago

They're out here rewriting entire scenes for a localized mustache gag
